I haven't read this cover to cover, but holy cow, it is packed full of awesome information. I use this on every YW lesson I have now, it's like the Cliff Notes version of the gospel. Great companion to the scriptures. Just perfect!
When I was a young LDS girl we had an excellent mutual program in the church that I loved, but we did not have the incredible YW Personal Progress Program that is now used. Therefore, I decided I would do it now--even though I will be turning 70!!! this month. I chose faith as my first value to work on. One of the assignments was to read about faith in this book, True to the Faith. I ended up reading the whole book as I was learning so much! I highly recommend it to EVERY Latter-Day-Saint and to those who are not LDS so they might have a better understanding of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints.
What a wonderful review this was of all the beautiful doctrines of the gospel of Jesus Christ as taught by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I felt uplifted and a spirit of peace as I read the truths that I already believe. This book laid out in clear fashion all of the teachings that I hold dear; I was able to clearly see how it all fits in the plan of salvation. My testimony of these truths has been strengthened and I love them more. As I have worked with the Young Women of our ward for almost ten years in the Personal Progress program, I have used this little book many times. I just had a desire this year to read it from cover to cover to get the whole picture. I am so glad that I did that. It has been a blessing to me.
I was just reading this, in the section about abuse... I have felt abused by those in authority in my religion. I have been falsely accused by some. I have confessed the ill treatment, and yet my testimony means nothing to my local church leaders. I have found peace in knowing what my church actually teaching about abuse, even if none of those leaders choose to see it or even care the harm that was done to me. I know God sees. I know God knows. I know God loves.
Not perfect (conforms to the bizarre Mormon confusion of "free" = "without price" when discussing free will and agency, for instance), but a wonderful book and more than an able replacement for the woefully out-of-date and incorrect Mormon Doctrine.
I read this cover to cover for my scripture study every night for the past few months and read the scriptures associated with each chapter. I kept a journal of favourite scriptures and just enjoyed reviewing my basic beliefs. I love the gospel of Jesus Christ. I felt his love reading through these pages and learning of Him. He lives!
Excellent gospel reference for starting research or answering questions. The introduction to the book gives this explanation as to its purpose. “This book is designed as a companion to studying the scriptures and the teachings of latter-day prophets. It contains brief, simple statements on gospel doctrines and principles, arranged alphabetically.”
This felt like reading Preach My Gospel but not feeling like a manual. Preach My Gospel is better if you want to deeply study. This is better if you want to review principles from the missionary lessons.
Found at my branch in the kitchen section, my husband was told to take it home as it was a older book from 2004 . Has a lot of old values that thank God the church doesn't go by today with the changing of the times . It needs to stay hidden LOL
Our Stake President gave us a challenge in the Spring Stake Conference in 2009 to read this before the November Stake Conference. I almost made it but not quite, however I kept reading since I was so close. Ammon and I would read a passage, the additional scriptures, and then would find a past Ensign article that was related. I learned a lot! The gospel is so sweet, clear, organized, simple yet profound, and beautiful. I'm glad that I took the challenge even though it took me just a little bit longer to finish. This book is an amazing resource for many of the questions members, converts, or investigators might have regarding gospel principles and practices. A must for you library and I'm grateful the church has put this out.
It is always difficult to switch between fiction then reference material on a constant basis. That and the fact I've been extremely busy has also slowed me down on all my reading.
Anyway the majority of principles and teachings were covered by previous reads so it was a review for me. And occasionally I would come across an entry that was more elaborated on so it did keep me on my toes.
There were also times when the book took me on a wild ride whether reprimanding, teaching or reminding me of Jesus' great love or a mix depending on entries read.
Great LDS read although I would recommend it in portions, especially for those who aren't reference readers.
This is a great book and resource for scripture and gospel study by topic. I love the simple explanations of doctrines and teachings of the gospel. There are many wonderful and important truths taught directly and powerfully. I especially love the explanations of the Atonement, faith, gratitude, the Holy Ghost, hope, prayer, repentance, and revelation. Not that I have any favorite gospel principles, but I thought that these were explained well. I am grateful for the knowledge of all of these principles and truths in my life.
An excellent reference for every member of the Church. While some of the items are worded exactly the same as the “For Strength of Youth” pamphlet, they usually go into more detail. This book provides a perfect starting point for talk and lesson research and can answer many personal questions as well. If you need a copy, talk to your bishop and he will be able to get you one, or order it from www.lds.org.
Wish I would have read this years ago. We were challenged by our Stake President to read the Book of Mormon before our Nauvoo trip last year as a stake staff and youth for it. If we finished early to read this as well. I LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF IT!! It was so insightful and helpful to me and my copy is all highlighted with this and that as well as corresponding scriptures that go with each section.
So, I found this at a yard sale for 25 cents and picked it up. What a great addition to our Gospel collection! It's a little bit like the topical guide in the scriptures, but with more modern life added in (like the topic of birth control). I feel like I have learned from reading it and felt my testimony of true principles grow.
It's hard to give a church book less than 5 stars and feel good about yourself. This was a good typical guide and probably more about the LDS faith than A Marvelous Work and a Wonder was about proving the Catholics wrong. It's not one I plan to sit down and read again anytime soon but a well composed reference book. It was worth my time so I'd recommend it.
This is an incredible study guide and a definite must-read for anyone wanting to understand the gospel of Jesus Christ better. This came out after I served my mission, so I wasn’t lucky enough to use it during my service, but I read it after it came out and fell in love with it. I’m super jealous of missionaries who get to use this!
This book is designed as a companion to studying the scriptures and teachings of latter-day prophets. It is a good resource when you prepare talks, teach classes, and answer questions about the Church.
Excellent source of gospel information to those of you who are LDS (mormon). This book goes through difference pieces of gospel info and describes it to you and gives you detail about what each topic is/means. I totally recommend it to LDS members if you haven't done so already!
I first read this in 2006, and have been going back again and again for reference and insight. An excellent guide to topics of doctrine and of church organization, this book is both instructive and inspirational.
I thought it was very speratual. I whould recomend this book to LDS people only. it gets more boring at the end, I finished the book last night, and there was alot that had "go see" this or that. If you are interesed in books for the moron relighon that is one of the books.
