I received a free copy of, My Sister's Only Hope, by Alison Ragsdale, from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Kenzie and Olivia are sisters, one wants a child and one does not. Kenzie donates her eggs to her sister Olivia, so she can have the baby she always wanted, then tragedy strikes, and Olivia passed away. Secrets and lies are found out, how well did Kenzie know Olivia? This was a heavy read. I don't know that I would make the same decisions as Kenzie though.

What would you do if your sister asked you to help her become a mother?
I think that would be a request that would break my heart, and I would love to do everything I could to make her wish come true. I just don't know if I would be as brave as Kensie is towards Olivia.

I truly admire Kensie. She sees it as nothing more than normal, given their past, and I can fully understand that. When you have such a deep-rooted bond together, you probably don’t have to think long about it.
The only question is: was the bond really that strong...?

I am very aware that you can become incredibly angry when everything you believed in suddenly falls apart and you’re faced with facts you cannot change. Your first reaction may not be the best one, and once you’ve had enough time to process everything, you often see things much more clearly. That can lead you to change your future plans—which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, or worse than before.

The author has created very human characters. They all have clear perspectives and opinions, and I found it admirable that they were able to talk about everything like adults, without getting into fights. Honesty was clearly a top priority for them, and that’s something to be admired—or at least, in most of them.

If everyone had had that same attitude, there would have been less heartache.

This heartwarming yet heartbreaking story is about loss—but also about love, family, friendship, and finding new paths.

Kensie faced a difficult decision, and I found it brave that she stood her ground. I just don’t know if I would’ve followed the same path. I think probably not.

Great story, wonderful characters. 5 stars.

Thank you.

My Sister’s Only Hope is an emotionally charged book with secrets.
Kenzie and Olivia are sisters and they live in the renovated family home.
On the ground floor Kenzie and her husband Arran are career minded and do not want children.
On the first floor Olivia lives with hubby Glenn who wants nothing more than a family.
After trying to get pregnant and failing, Olivia is about to give up when Kenzie offers her eggs.
Then tragedy strikes and Olivia dies.
All their lives are changed and decisions are made that will cause disruption.
And secrets and lies that have been kept hidden decide to arise.
It’s an authentic story with lots of emotion.
Overall it’s a good read but something that griped me was in every second sentence the couple used the word ‘love’ (like a pet name) and it was overused to the extreme that it became annoying.
I would read another book by this author.

I admit, I did shed a little tear during this book. There’s so much loss in Kenzie’s life and you can’t help but feel for her.

The book’s ending was inevitable but it was enjoyable

A story that explores the bond between sisters? I was instantly drawn in. As soon as I read the premise of My Sister’s Only Hope, I knew it would be a meaningful and emotional read. The plot instantly caught my attention, and since Alison Ragsdale is a new author to me, I was excited to finally check out her work and couldn’t let this one pass me by.

My Sister’s Only Hope was filled with emotion. It was a compelling story that delved into the bonds between sisters, the pain of loss, hidden truths, and the intricate nature of love and self-discovery.

The story centered on Kenzie and her sister Olivia, who shared an incredibly close bond. While Kenzie and her husband, Arran, had decided not to have children, Olivia longed deeply to become a mother. When Olivia was unable to conceive, Kenzie, despite some initial tension with Arran, offered to donate her eggs. Tragically, shortly after the embryo transfer, Olivia died in a hiking accident, leaving behind a single embryo and a devastated family. Determined to honor her sister’s dream, Kenzie made the life-changing decision to carry and raise Olivia’s baby. But as she stepped into the role of a mother, Arran pulled away and Kenzie uncovered a secret her sister had kept hidden.

Alison Ragsdale’s writing style felt comfortingly familiar. It was gentle, emotionally rich, and grounded in everyday relationships, yet the story’s premise brought a fresh and original twist that set it apart. Her ability to blend relatable characters with morally layered dilemmas made this narrative both accessible and deeply affecting. Although the story was deeply emotional and heartfelt, some parts felt a bit predictable, and the heavy subject matter occasionally made it feel overwhelming.

Overall, I really enjoyed Alison Ragsdale’s latest novel and now feel eager to explore more of her earlier work. My Sister’s Only Hope was a moving and thought-provoking story that delved into the powerful bond between sisters, the heartache of loss, fertility challenges, and the journey toward self-discovery. It’s a great fit for readers who appreciate emotionally layered, family-focused dramas that grapple with tough moral choices.

Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read this book early in exchange for an honest review.

My Sister’s Only Hope is a compelling and poignant novel that gets to the heart of the emotions that bring a family together, as well as those that threaten to tear them apart. Familial relationships—siblings, spouses, parents and children—are inherently complicated, and never is that more true than in the pages of this book. There are secrets, there is history, there are hard choices that must be made, and there are the consequences of those choices. Each of the characters is finely drawn, with all of their complexities, their opinions, their foibles, their strengths, their mistakes, and, mostly, their ability to love. Because despite all the hardships that the characters face, there is always love, and a willingness to forgive and understand. I received a copy of this book from the publisher.

Sometimes you learn things about your family that you didn't think was possible until the facts slap you squarely in the face. When you find out that what you've grown up knowing is true isn't really, it's bound to be a shock. Kenzie's parents died tragically in a mountain climbing accident, so she and her sister have become especially close over the years as the only members left of their family. Set in the Scottish Highlands in the shadow of Ben Nevis, the mountain where her parents died, she is constantly reminded of what she lost, and her dream is to make sure their family line continues by helping her sister have the baby she's always wanted. This story is so well-crafted. The events are not predictable, the way is not easy. Alison Ragsdale has a knack for storytelling, finding the nuances within every character and relationship. She can tell the story from each perspective leaving you with the same quandries as the characters face. There are no "bad" characters. There are no "sides" to take. These are just normal people trying to figure out what is best for them and those they love. It seems that just as things are mellowing out, a wrench is thrown into the works, and the story takes a different direction that the characters, and you, didn't anticipate. Loved, loved, loved this book, and I had a hard time putting it down long enough to even sleep. This is one of those "just one more chapter" books, the kind I really like to read. Thank you to publisher Bookouture and NetGalley for sending me the ARC of this book which comes out in August. It is an emotional story, yet easy to read. Here are my favorite lines:

"I'm a wimp. So, I'll need the big guns. Epidurals. Acupuncture. Witchcraft. The works."
"Happiness needed space to get in, and the only way to create that space was to clear out anger, disappointment and regret. She believed that acceptance was the final, golden ticket to healing."
"Just don't try to handle everything alone. We humans weren't designed to be islands. Support saved me, and you'll need some too."

My Sister’s Only Hope by Alison Ragsdale is such a moving, heartfelt story. From the moment I saw the title and read the description, I knew I had to read it- I’m always drawn to stories that explore fertility struggles. As the pages turned, unexpected secrets kept me hooked, and I found myself completely invested in the characters. Kenzie, in particular, was so inspiring- her strength and courage stayed with me long after I closed the book. It’s a beautiful, emotional read that touched my heart in so many ways.

Book Review: My Sister’s Only Hope by Alison Ragsdale

There are some stories that don’t just entertain — they touch something deep within you. My Sister’s Only Hope by Alison Ragsdale is one of those rare novels that captures both the fragility and the strength of the human heart. From the very first chapter, I could sense the emotional weight carried by the characters, and by the end, I felt as though I had lived their journey alongside them.

Ragsdale has an extraordinary gift for translating emotion onto the page. Her prose is delicate yet powerful, weaving heartbreak and hope into every line. The relationship between the sisters is written with such authenticity that it feels almost sacred — the kind of love that transcends words and endures even through unbearable pain.

What struck me most was how Ragsdale portrays grief and healing. She doesn’t shy away from the hard truths of loss, but she also reminds us that within sorrow lies the possibility of renewal. The story shows how love can be both our deepest wound and our greatest source of strength. Each chapter felt like a quiet reminder of what it means to be human — to hurt, to forgive, and to carry on.

Reading My Sister’s Only Hope was a deeply emotional experience. It made me pause and reflect on my own relationships, on the people who shape my life, and on the power of compassion. It’s one of those books that leaves you sitting in silence after turning the last page, your heart full yet aching in the best possible way.

Alison Ragsdale has written a story that not only moves you but stays with you — a gentle, heart-tugging reminder of love’s endurance and the beauty of hope, even in life’s darkest moments.

✨ I am grateful for the opportunity to read this heart-touching novel. All opinions and thoughts in this review are my heartfelt own.

“The winter morning bright, welcoming them to the day, and to their future, as a family, wherever that took them.”

What a beautifully, tragic yet hopeful story. A story of love, hope, heartache, secrets, and finally, healing that is so well written that it’s hard to put down. Alison knows how to write family hurt, how to put emotions into words so that the reader is transformed and sitting in with these characters as they’re speaking. As the fire is crackling, as they’re drinking and eating – we’re sitting there right along with them and it’s magical.

Olivia desperately wants a child, to love and adore while also carrying along the family line. So she asks her dear sister Kenzie to give her eggs. As it turns out, they’re left with one viable egg but, tragedy strikes before it can be implanted into Olivia. And Kenzie is left to pick up the pieces but, she finds out things that Olivia had hid from her. It leaves Kenzie with decisions to make and her husband doesn’t seem to be willing to be included in these plans.

This story was written so personally as though Alison had felt these things herself, it brings you in and refuses to let go. The emotions are just so raw and real. I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It’s sad, it’s sweet, it’s tragic but, it’s hopeful and real. I loved it! 5️⃣⭐️ read❗️ Thank you to Bookouture and Alison for the advanced readers copy!

First, I want to thank Alison Ragsdale, Bookouture, and NetGalley for providing me with this book so I can provide you with this review.

Heads up you may want to grab a box of tissues before sitting down to read Alison Ragsdale’s latest My Sister’s Only Hope! Alison quickly tugged on my heart strings with this one and had me tearing up. My Sister’s Only Hope was definitely an extremely emotionally powerful rollercoaster ride with a lot of twists and turns you never saw coming.

I found it appropriate that Alison would dedicate this book to her forever friends that are her sisters!

There was a quote by an unknown person that Alison used in her book that touched me deeply about sisters being like stars, not seeing them but knowing they are always there. I have two sisters who both live in different states that I don’t get to see as much as I would like to.

Ohh it is a phone call that you never want to get!! My heart instantly ached for Kenzie!! I can relate to her getting a call like that about a relative and feeling all those feels!!

I love the bond that these two sisters Kenzie and Olivia had. Not to mention that they would do anything for eachother if it meant making eachother happy.

My Sister’s Only Hope deals with important issues like IVF, fertility issues, grief, etc. Plus, even deep painful hidden secrets of the past.

Alison’s ending I was kinda shocked by and didn’t see that coming. I was actually routing for another outcome.

My Sisters Only Hope by Alison Ragsdale
This was a lovely story, and I enjoyed reading it. Alison's description of emotion is beautiful. She captures the feelings and describes them in a way that truly embodies the accuracy of whatever emotion is described.

This was a heartfelt journey. There were some instances where I wondered why Kenzie was so set on doing things just because it would have made her sister happy or fulfilled, but on another level, I understand the thought process.

The character development and growth were beautiful, and it was brilliant to see how each character worked through their struggles to find what they wanted and needed.

This was the first Alison Ragsdale novel I’ve read, and while I don’t tend to read many books with such emotional plots, I am glad I went through this one. Her writing is powerful, precise, and flows nicely.

This was a beautiful story about truth, forgiveness, and moving forward.

This was definitely an emotional book, more than I expected. If you have fertility struggles or have lost a loved one, this one may not be for you. As hard as parts of this one was to read, I really enjoyed it. I was sucked into Kenzie’s turmoil and suffering. Wanting to help her sister was incredibly noble, but when her sister died, everything changed. She had such big decisions to make that would turn her life upside down. I don’t know if I could have made the decisions she did, but I also didn’t start with the same mentality as her either.

I desperately wanted a happily ever after for Kenzie (or as happy as it could be without Olivia).

This is the first book I’ve read by Alison. I’m glad that I took the chance on it. Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for my copy of this book.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. This book strangled my heart and punched me in the gut but I absolutely loved it and could not put it down! Kenzie has agreed to have her sister’s baby so she can finally become a mother. But then is killed in a horrible accident. Determined to bring her sister’s baby into the world, Kenzie keeps going. But she is haunted by what her sister told her towards the end of her life. Secrets are revealed and are gut wrenching and now Kenzie is having second thoughts. This book is truly a look at what can be the reality of motherhood. I absolutely fell in love with the characters and how well they were developed throughout each chapter. I felt myself stressed out as if I was the one who was faced with this enormous situation. What a fantastic read!!

This story touched my heart. The losses suffered by the families are raw and emotional. The author went into the depths of how secrets and lies can have rippling effects on many in each person’s extended circle. I felt every experience the characters endured and it was nice to see how new people can come into your life and help ease the pain even when it doesn’t ever go away. We all learn how to move on in a new chapter and learn how to overcome challenges and fears. I thought the ending would be different after Colm and Nora moved in and was surprised and happy by the way things turned out for everyone involved ~ Kenzie, Arran, Glenn and Jack.

WOW! I read this book in a day. I did not put it down! What an emotional rollercoaster ride of a journey. I felt as if I was on that rollercoaster with them. I loved the setting and the gorgeous landscape descriptions had me totally captivated, Ben Nevis, mountains, lakes. Picturing them in my mind as I read.

Review of ‘My Sister’s Only Hope’ by Alison Ragsdale, due to be published on 27 August 2025 by Bookouture.

Kenzie agrees to help her older sister Olivia have the baby she craves by donating her eggs. When tragedy strikes, and Olivia is killed in a climbing accident, Kenzie has to make the hard decision of what to do with the embryo that was to be implanted.

Kenzie and her husband Arran had agreed that they did not want children, and he is against the idea of Kenzie proceeding with a pregnancy in memory of her sister.

This book was an emotional rollercoaster of making hard decisions, learning to live with loss, grief, forgiveness, strength, courage, love and acceptance. You become invested in the characters, and how their part of the story will play out. A recommended read.

Touching, Heartwarming Story but don't think I am the audience for this and wasn't moved and didn't feel the emotions a Book should make you fee.

Did enjoy the characters and went in different directions than I expected.

Alison Ragsdale is skilled at writing stories that tug at the heart. This story had me shocked and sad and mad all at the same time. Kenzie Ford and her sister Olivia are extremely close, Olivia raising her younger sister since their parents passed. They lived in their family home, converted into two separate homes, with their husbands. Olivia and her husband wanted a baby, but have been unsuccessful. Kenzie and her husband don’t want children. Will Kenzie fulfill her sister’s wish to help her have a child? This book is full of secrets, tragedy, love and forgiveness and drew me in. I would recommend it.

Many thanks to NetGalley, Bookouture, and the author for an ARC of this book which I had the pleasure of reading. All opinions are my own. Publication date: August 27, 2025

Alison Ragsdale has once again delivered a heartwarming and heartwrenching new novel for our reading pleasure. Her new book is titled My Sister’s Only Hope. My hope is that you read this new book and enjoy it as much as I did. It is such a satisfying read. It is another of those books that once I got into the story there was no putting it down. I’m so glad I don’t have to get up and go to work in the mornings!

This is a story of two sisters that were orphaned when their parents died. The older sister has asked the younger one to help her become a mother. She tells her she is her only hope. Kenzie knows she will do whatever it takes to help her sister. Her sister has done so much for her and this is finally something she can do for Olivia.

This book explores the bonds between sisters and marriage vows. It will make you think and wonder what you would do in the situation that Kenzie finds herself in. I am not sure I would have made the same decision in her situation. It is after all a life changing decision. A child is just not an eighteen year obligation. Love and commitment usually ends up somewhere in the mix.

I am absolutely giddy every time I hear that Ms. Ragsdale is coming out with a new book. There are times when I yearn for a story like she writes. She writes with her heart and soul. You can feel it in the stories. She has a great talent for developing characters that stick with you long after you finish the book. It is because you take a deep dive into their feelings and who they really are so they tend to stay with you.

If you love good stories about family, commitment and the nitty gritty that comes with them, then I highly recommend any book that is written by Alison Ragsdale and My Sister’s Only Hope is a wonderful book to start with. You can’t go wrong putting this one on your nightstand. Until next time…Happy Reading!

Don’t forget to support the authors you read by leaving a review.

This book turned out very differently than what I anticipated!
Kenzie’s world implodes in just a matter of weeks and I thought one of the major decisions she made was based on a misguided notion to fulfill her sister’s wishes. I also thought it was terribly unfair to Aaren and I was on his side.
I thought I knew what would occur halfway through the book but I missed it by a wide mile.
The ending is very good and nicely wrapped up.
One has to choose happiness even if it means letting go of the ick of the past.
Thanks NetGalley and Bookouture for the advance copy.
