3,5/5. This is the kind of book that even if I didn’t enjoy it that much, I see and recognize the potential. I think that a younger audience would like it more. For personal preference, the art wasn’t for me and the story too slow, not epic enough. That being said it has decent artwork if you like the style and the humor/action/storyline is good enough to make it worth it, again probably more for young reader and that is the targeted age for this book so can’t blame them for not liking it much has an adult. Personal liking 2,5/5 potential 4/5. I’ll go with a 3,5/5 round up to four, seem more fair that way!

Une lecture sympathique. Le monde de Milo est plein de poésie, de rebondissements fantastiques etc. Cela m’a parfois fait penser à un film d’animation de studios Ghibli (avec moins de poésie mais il y a des similitudes). Ce n’est pas un coup de coeur car pour moi il manque un je ne sais quoi, mais je lirai la suite car j’ai néanmoins passé un bon moment.

Milo vive praticamente da solo in una casetta sperduta nella natura, il padre viaggia per lavoro e lo lascia spesso in balia di se stesso. Per fortuna però ci sono le tre zie che si occupano di badare a lui portandogli ogni giorno del cibo e preoccupandosi per lui. Un giorno Milo trova nell’acqua del lago vicino casa sua un pesce, ma è un pesce speciale! Si tratta di un pesce d’oro, che una volta messo nell’acqua cresce a dismisura e nasconde dei poteri magici. Sarà infatti proprio questo pesce d’oro a portarlo in un’avventura sorprendente!

Ho trovato questa graphic novel diversa da quelle che leggo solitamente. La storia mi ha dato un po’ l’idea di un cartone, in cui c’è un bambino alle prese con un’avventura che diventa una missione da compiere. Nei disegni si sente molto l’influenza dei cartoni giapponesi, che hanno quello stile in cui si riesce a calibrare bene il fattore magico e il fattore reale.

I colori usati rendono bene l’atmosfera, facendoci godere a pieno dei disegni. Si tratta di colori freddi, tendenti al blu e al verde. Ci fanno entrare nel clima della storia, come se fossimo anche noi nella foresta in cui si trova Milo.

The Premise
The entire story is pretty much totally laid out in the premise if you are looking at Milo's World: The Land Under the Lake for your middle grade reader. There isn't anything you wouldn't want a young reader to see, even the magical violence is really tame (and not about killing). This is actually exactly the kind of story my nephew and other boys his age would love to read.
There is a really relatable kid in Milo, he's adventurous, curious, smart but open to the incredible. Even as an adult I had fun following along on his adventures with a giant goldfish!
The Buzz
I really loved how Milo went up against the sorcerer's minions and outsmarted them many a time, staying one step ahead. Really though Cyndi was my favorite character!! I loved how brash she was and so certain about Milo! She's younger than him much like Valia seems to be older and I really appreciated what this said about friends. That both are girls is also another neat detail.
Later in Milo's World: The Land Under the Lake our little group runs into all sorts of fun... ghost lights, monster vomit and a traitor!
The Feels
Milo is lacking in adult supervision. He's a good kid but lonely and left to his own devices because his dad works in the city and he's never known his mother. His guardians are his elderly aunts who make sure he's fed and alive. Along his journey in Milo's World: The Land Under the Lake he makes friends and meets his mother for the first time. It's really heart warming and a great thing for lonely middle grade readers to see that friends come from all sorts of places.
I really loved how Valia had her own emotional struggles and how Milo didn't hold it against her when she made the wrong choice at first.
The Visuals
I like how the pages in Milo's World: The Land Under the Lake are laid out with a large setting picture overlapped with the action frames. It's a neat layout that any age reader can follow. And the art is really good, colorful, fanciful with a touch of realism that really grounds the setting. The art really suited the story well and brought it to life.
Milo's World: The Land Under the Lake is perfect for an adventure seeking middle grade reader of either sex! It's a great start to a cute parallel worlds universe that has plenty of potential for many more adventures with Milo and his friends.

Read sometime in early October in 2020.
Great art, but a weak, rushed storyline that failed to grab my attention. Very little character development - I hated the young girl in particular, who seemed to exist only to give Milo a love interest. Too bad she's way too old for him, not that she acts like it!
It's a kid's book, so whatever, I guess.

Très sympa ! Je suis fan du dessin et l'histoire est pas mal du tout. C'est un tome de mise en place qui donne très envie de découvrir la suite.

Oggi sono qui per parlarvi di un'altra splendida opera fumettistica, firmata Renoir.
Come sapete, conosco questa casa editrice da quand'ero piccola e le loro opere mi hanno accompagnata nella mi crescita come lettrice di fumetti e co.
Il volume di cui vi parlo oggi è il primo volume della serie novel de Il Mondo di Milo, una bellissima opera francese, realizzata da Richard Marazano e Christophe Ferreira, che mi ha ricordato moltissimo le meraviglie dello Studio Ghibli.
Milo è il nostro protagonista, un ragazzino che vive tra le colline con suo padre. Purtroppo la madre è morta e a causa del lavoro del papà, lui è spesso solo quindi a vegliare sulla sua incolumità ci sono tre buone zie.
Milo ha l'abitudine, dopo la scuola, di passare le sue giornate pescando gamberetti, un giorno come tanti, però, nel laghetto prende un pesce... dorato!
Di per sé già tutto questo è alquanto insolito, ma quando la grande euforia lo spinge a portarlo a casa per prendersene cura, di certo non avrebbe mai immaginato quali avventure questo incontro potesse portarlo a vivere.
" Accidenti, mi hanno abbandonato in una palude! Quelle persone non hanno il benché minimo senso dell'ospitalità... "
Il tratto delle illustrazioni, lo stile, la colorazione, tutto mi ha preso di quest'opera che ho adorato tantissimo!
La storia è appassionante ma anche semplice poiché è targata verso un pubblico principalmente giovane.
Adoro quando le graphic novel solo a colori poiché ti permettono di vedere davanti qualcosa che sembra già un film d'animazione.
Voglio quindi dare un voto pieno a questo primo volume, in attesa degli altri che mi aspetto siano ancor più dentro il clou della storia. Sono curiosissima di continuare l'avvenuta con Milo. Consigliatissimo!

Je souhaitais lire cette bd depuis un petit moment déjà, très attirée par les dessins qui font écho, pour moi, au travail des Studio Ghibli. Elle faisait partie cette année à la sélection des bds à 2€ pour les 48h de la BD et je n’ai pas hésité une seconde et j’ai sauté dessus.
Je suis un peu partagée à la fin de ma lecture, car j’ai trouvé le livre et l’histoire très sympathique et intrigante, mais il me manque un petit "je ne sais quoi " pour que cela devienne une vraie belle lecture. Les personnages sont touchants et ces grand-mères forment un trio des plus curieux et j’ai très envie d’en savoir plus.
Les couleurs et les dessins sont magnifiques, on plonge très vite dans cet univers fantastique. J’ai trouvé que les méchants faisaient gentil-méchants un peu comme dans nos dessins animés que l’on regardait enfant : gentillets, mais pas très crédibles parfois dans ce rôle de méchants.
Je lirais la suite à coup sûr, car j’ai envie de savoir de quoi retourne ce mystère et qui sait, j’y trouverai peut-être ce petit quelque chose qui me manquait !

This is an outstanding graphic novel. I'd give it a 6 star review if I could. It is a real book of art and the story is amazing. It is just amazing. I've been reading graphic novels all summer. This meets all my criteria for amazing. I can't wait to read the next two. It is a larger book so you get the full artistic effect with the panels.
A boy without mom and dad is gone, is by himself. He ends up with a magic goldfish which takes him to the "other side" of the lake to another dimension where he finds his mom. The relationships between the characters are in-depth.

I disegni sono molto particolari e davvero belli. Io non sono bravo a disegnare, quindi per me gli illustratori sono tipo degli dèi da venerare. In particolare, gli autori di questo fumetto hanno creato delle ambientazioni davvero coinvolgenti e un bel vedere per gli occhi. Per continuare passate sul blog.

This was fun, but I don’t think the translation holds up. There’s definitely something that’s lost in the dialogue. However the art is excellent and the world is cool.

Milo's World Book 1: The Land Under the Lake follows lonely Milo, who discovers a magical, parallel world beneath his local lake after finding a golden fish egg, leading him to rescue a girl named Valia from an evil toad-man and an evil wizard, uncovering his own mother's magical connection to this world as he embarks on an adventure to protect its inhabitants from darkness.
Since I have a problem with the joint in my right thumb and typing on my phone isn’t currently easy for me, I’m going to do somewhat less than I would normally do when writing a review. I’m just going to have to do this until my hand is better, for who knows how long…So what I am going to do is just talk about what I think the best thing about the book is and what I like least about the book is. I'll start with the best thing: so I accidentally read the second book in the series before I read this one. It’s not a mistake I normally make, and I was already over half way through before I realised. No wonder I was confused, this book lays the perfect ground work for the events in book two (duh…🤦🏼♀️). So I enjoyed how this book starts off and we have a bit of a mystery. Milo has never had a mother and his father has never wanted to talk about her, so he doesn’t know why. Then we get brought directly into the action where we meet Valia and the magical goldfish. I thoroughly enjoyed the story in this one. I learned about all the things I didn’t understand before, even the three old aunties! Again, I found the illustrations very entertaining and effective in adding to the storytelling.
What I liked the least: Milo is just a confused kid, but sometimes I wanted to grab his ear and turn him around and give him a lecture. Talk about it a pre teen? Teenager? I’m not sure exactly how old he is. But he definitely has the attitude of thinking that he knows better than all of his elders and should do what he thinks and not what he is told. That was annoying. Also there were times that things happened and I thought that perhaps they were a bit dark or depressing for a kid’s graphic novel. Maybe I’m just too used to graphic novels aimed at this age being more upbeat and positive. On the other side of this, I did care what happened to the characters and when the not so good things happened, that’s what made me really realise that I did. That’s why I rounded up not down with the rating - I cared what happened to the characters in this story.

E printre cele mai populare BD-uri pentru copii aparute recent, si e clar de ce inca de la coperta. Desenul e foarte ingrijit, coloritul pasnic, dar atractiv, iar personajele usor de recunoscut (desi oleaca generice - Milo n-are nici pe departe potentialul de brand al unor Tintin sau Broussaille, e un pusti obisnuit, fara nimic deosebit).
Povestea e aproape la fel de obisnuita - Milo (care locuieste singur cuc intr-o cabana la marginea unui lac de munte) gaseste un pestisor de aur si incearca sa-l creasca intr-o galeata. Dar pestisorul creste intr-o zi cat altii intr-un an, si personaje dubioase sunt pe urmele lui...
Confruntarea inegala se rezolva cu fuga, iar Milo, Valia (o pustoaica temperamentala) si pestisorul de aur ajung, bineinteles, intr-o alta lume.
Punctul forte: atmosfera. Punctul slab: toata “povestea” de mai sus e intinsa cu taraita pe 60 de pagini.

J’ai adoré le character design des personnages. Ça a un côté très ghibli dans la façon qu’ils ont de se tenir ou de bouger. D’ailleurs, l’histoire en elle-même avait des airs d’un ghibli.
Le seul point négatif, pour moi, sont les couleurs : elles sont un peu ternes, mais ce n’est pas le problème, c’est surtout que les planches sont sombres même en plein jour, c’est déroutant et assez désagréable au final.
C’est un premier tome d’introduction, donc à voir ce que donne la suite, mais ça promet.
J’ai bien aimé cette lecture.

This was quite interesting. In a way it reminds me of Studio Ghibli work. There is a human boy who’s father is never around so he basically lives alone, and this weird creature who is hunting a goldfish that won’t stop growing. Between the illustration style, and the flow of the story, I am reminded of Howl’s Moving Castle, and Arrietty (both of which I know are kids books by famous children’s authors). There is just something different about these classic stories in the hands of Ghibli, and that is what this book makes me feel. Something special.

This is the tale of a boy who falls into a magical world beneath the waters of a local lake, where he discovers he has magical powers and is drawn into the dramas of that world. As the volumes progress, Milo will learn more about his background and the worlds he inhabits, on what feels like a progression toward a destiny that is both heroic and humble. Beautifully illustrated and told in a way that is ideal for younger readers.

Une superbe histoire avec de magnifiques dessins.
Le graphisme m'a beaucoup fait penser aux dessins-animés des studios Ghibli. Je viens de voir que le scénario est tiré d'un conte chinois donc ça ne doit pas être une coincidence.
En tout cas visuellement c'est très beau. Pendant ces 60 et quelques pages on a vraiment l'impression de s'évader en même temps que le héros.
