Exterminite #1

What if there was a company that could go into your dreams and kill your nightmares? EXTERMINITE is a mind-bending 5-part graphic novel series from Len Peralta, Mikey Neumann, and Kris Straub that will scare you out of your own pants, hilariously. In the premiere issue, we are introduced to Kylie, a headstrong woman trying to make ends meet in Cleveland. When a recurring nightmare becomes too much to handle, she enlists the help of a strange man named Nat – only Nat, that’s it. And he is a person that can kill nightmares. Here’s what people are saying about "I was gonna say nice things about this because these guys are friends. Then I read it. Saying nice things now because it's REALLY GOOD."- John Scalzi, Author of Old Man's War, Redshirts, and Lock In"Three of my favorite creative people getting together on a project? Tell me more. Then I found out it's a story about killing nightmares and I had to check it out. They've hooked me with this first one. I can't wait to see where they're going to take it from here."- Patrick Rothfuss, author of The Kingkiller Chronicle trilogy"Loved it! Beautiful art (to be expected) and cool setup for a continuing story. Very, very cool."- Gerry Conway, Co-creator of The Punisher, Firestorm, Power Girl, Vixen, and Ms. Marvel "I really want to give this book a compliminsult because it introduced me to the idea of a compliminsult. But I can’t find anything about it to insult. So instead I’ll just say I want to hire Nat and Kylie and I want to eat at Sam’s Sammy Shop. You will too after you read it. Love, love, love Exterminite."- Tom Merritt, Host of Daily Tech News Show, Cordkillers, and Sword and Laser"It's like Inception if it were funny, made sense, and had incredible artwork instead of an ambiguous ending!"- Conor Lastowka, Writer for Rifftrax

It's hard not to assume this was inspired by Inception, but here we have someone who can enter your dreams to kill your nightmares, and someone with a really horrible recurring nightmare. The characters are pretty likable and the premise is interesting, so I will probably check out more.

I know Mikey Neumann's work from his "Movies with Mikey" YouTube channel, so I was interested when I saw him listed as an author. I wasn't disappointed. This is a quick but eye-catching origin story for not a hero but a business, paranormal exterminators, but with knock-out drops instead of unlicensed nuclear accelerators. The two main characters aren't very fleshed out, obviously, but were appealing enough to make me curious about what happens next, and the method of battling nightmares (connecting dream-monsters to real-life experiences to figure out their weak points) worked well for the short, and may be the seed of some intriguing storylines. The art is simple and bold, which isn't gorgeous but works well on a Kindle edition (not my favorite medium for comics). It'll be interesting to see where it goes from here; I'm more than half convinced to check out the subsequent issues.

It was a very tidy story and it was to such a point that even though the ending left the door wide open for a second issue, it felt complete. It was as if it was supposed to end at one issue, but the writer had vague hopes for a continuation. And because it was so tidy, a number of moments felt forced. I like the premise of a guy who goes inside your mare space to help you vanquish your nightmares. The story also casually contains elements of real life that are usually portrayed as some easy breezy thing or focused on to the point that it becomes a caricature, but they aren’t here. So that was nice.

Kylie can’t sleep for all the noise in her head. So her friend/co-worker, Manda, recommends the services of a 52 cards short of a deck-looking guy named Nat. After they feel each other out and Kylie questions his business sense, Kylie agrees to let him help her. Once he’s in her head, he begins coaching her on how to control things and works on gaining more of her trust which in turn will increase her ability to manipulate things in her mare space.

So things happen and in the end, they start a business together. Seems like a jump, but it’s actually all spelled out, which is why I believe it’s too tidy. This came out in October 2014 and remains the only issue released. I’m interested, but I don’t know if I’ll even be able to continue.

I loved issue 1 of Exterminite. Len's art style in this reminds me of The Maxx, which I have a deep abiding love for. And while I expected there to be jokes, based on my knowledge of the creators’ other works, I was also pleasantly surprised by the emotional depths of the story. This issue really serves well to introduce us to Kylie and Nat, and sets up their future adventures together nicely. I can't wait to read more. Well done!

Enjoyable read

I really enjoyed reading this comic. And my 9 year old son loved it! It's helped him in dealing with his bad dreams. We both can't wait to read the next one. Great job! :-)

Fantastic introduction

What a great intro for this series. Just enough to get you hooked and excited for what is to come. Mickey Neumann, Len Peralta and Kris Straub make a great team and have provided a story that promises to be as eccentric as it is intriguing.

Better than expected

I honestly thought this would be a stupid book and thought I would just dismiss it once I was done, but I enjoyed it. I'm actually upset it was so short. It was rather interesting and gave advice that could be used in real life. Maybe it was because low expectations, but I looked forward to reading the next one.
