The Wildflower Ranch #2

Her Mistletoe Cowboy

Rate this book
Corporate analyst, Ivy Bishop, intends spending Christmas holed up in an isolated Montana ranch house with only an abandoned puppy for company. When the festive season ends her broken heart might just have had just enough time to heal.

Ex-rodeo rider, Rhett Dixon, has put his playing days behind him. He has something to prove. Despite being the first son in three generations of ranchers, he is determined to succeed in ranching on his own merits.

But when Rhett’s new neighbor proves to be far-too-pretty and far-too-compassionate, his single-minded focus deserts him. And the more time Ivy spends with the workaholic, blue-eyed cowboy next door the more she realizes her heart isn’t actually broken – yet.

The freezing conditions in the Montana mountains was especially noticeable at the Rose Crown ranch – Ivy Bishop had had three long days of driving to reach the ranch and when the lock in the front door was frozen solid she couldn’t believe her bad luck. Fortunately she had been forewarned that there was an occupant of the smaller house on the property, Little Rose Crown ranch, so she headed down there on foot with little Milly snuggled up inside her coat.

But by the time she arrived her teeth were chattering so badly she could barely talk. Rhett Dixon was stunned to see a beautiful, blonde but obviously “city girl” seemingly stranded out there in the icy conditions, but once he found out what the problem was, they hurried back to the main ranch where he fixed the lock and they moved inside. Again, things weren’t going right – there was no power – Ivy kept control over her fraught emotions, determined not to give in to her frustration and grief.

But the spark of attraction had already struck both Ivy and Rhett; neither would give in to it though for various reasons. As Ivy tried to work through her emotions, Rhett was having a battle of his own. Losing sight of his goal for Little Rose Crown was not part of his plans. With Christmas just around the corner, how were these two stubborn and hot headed young people going to get through it all?

A sweet little novella portraying a Christmas romance, the setting in the Montana mountains was beautiful. The author paints such descriptive word pictures that I could see the main street of the town, decorated and festive, the ice and snow laying around, everyone wrapped up against the cold. My only problem was it felt a little predictable, otherwise a great Christmas read.

Opening line: ‘…He had Company …’

My Thoughts: Ivy Bishop is a successful corporate analyst based in Atlanta, orphaned as a child and brought up by her grandparents; she arranges to buy her grandfather’s childhood home as a surprise. Sadly her grandparents pass away before she can reveal what she has done; When her engagement to her two-timing fiancé breaks down she decides to go to the property and spend Christmas alone baking her grandmother’s recipes as she works out what her next move is going to be. As you would expect things don’t go according to plan, starting with adopting an abandoned puppy and meeting her hunky next door neighbour. Rhett Dixon is also trying to start his life anew after straying onto the wrong side of the tracks for a while and he is not looking for a relationship any more than Ivy is – so of course you just know it is going to happen. What I enjoy is watching how all the hurdles are overcome for them to maybe get to a happily ever after.

HER MISTLETOE COWBOY is a wonderful feel good Christmas novella; it is a quick read but author Allissa Callen manages to bring the main characters alive on the pages, set up the relationships with the support cast quite vividly, oh and the descriptions of the town and Christmas celebrations are wonderful.

I certainly recommend this book to anyone who loves the Romance genre.

A lot of Aussie’s celebrate Christmas in July, well, I’m not going as far as making a Chrissy dinner but it is giving me the excuse to read some of my Christmas books this month and as it’s wintry here in Australia it’s the perfect opportunity to read books with a snowy vibe and winter scene.

Christmas in July read #2

2nd book in the Wildflower Ranch series.

I love these gorgeous romantic Christmas reads set in the Montana mountains and centring on delectable cowboys. Although I can’t imagine having Christmas at any other time than in summer wearing shorts, singlet and thongs and throwing meat on the barbie, this was still a fun and wonderful read. The snowy setting, and the vivid description of the wintry landscape was beautiful but I’m thankful I don’t live there, lol.

Two adorable dogs. A Christmas stroll. Mistletoe. Scrumptious cookies. Cute couple, Rhett and Ivy. Great supporting cast. Cute story.

This was a wonderfully written story about two "lost souls" that find each other. I loved the main female character, Ivy Bishop. She is smart, sexy, and down-to-earth. She meets Rhett Dixon when she arrives at the ranch, that had been in her family for generations. Ivy has come to "lick her wounds" and re-center herself after breaking it off with her fiance, after his betrayal, and leaving her job in Atlanta. Rhett bought part of Ivy's family's ranch, in order to prove something to himself, his family, the small town they all call home, and to try to honor a dying request. These two characters are both hurting and don't want any "complications" that any type of distraction with the opposite sex might entail. Read their story and go on the journey with them where you know that best of intentions don't always work out the way one would expect.

This is a very insightful novel. Callen takes what could be an ordinary Christmas romance and transforms it into something more, while keeping all of the magic and romance of the season. She brings Marietta to life in a vivid manner that will draw you into the heart of the tale. Her down to earth narrative combined with vivid descriptions will plunk you down in the middle of this ranch and you won’t want to leave.

I loved getting to know the characters in this novella. Callen takes the time to develop both as individuals with complete pasts and hopes for the future. We’ve met Rhett in previous stories from Marietta, but I was so happy to see him in so much of a better place in this one. Getting to know him as an individual, and getting to know his background better made everything so much more clear.

Overall, this was a sweet, funny, & emotional Christmas novella that I thoroughly enjoyed. I can’t wait to read more from this author, or from this series.

Please note that I received a complimentary copy of this work in exchange for an honest review.

Loved it! So glad Rhett finally got his HEA. When Ivy Bishop shows up on the Rose Crown she is just looking for a little peace and quiet to heal from a very bad breakup. But sexy neighbor Rhett Dixon has her brain going a little crazy and thinking maybe being alone is all it's cracked up to be. When Rhett bought the land surrounding the Rose Crown he vowed to turn over a new leaf and live up to his mother's expectations, after all he had promised her on her deathbed that he would. But the tempting Ivy Bishop is making that hard! This is a great story filled with the hope and love of the holiday season and new beginnings for two great characters. Couldn't put this one down. I highly recommend it.

The sweet love story of Ivy and Rhett.

Ivy moves to her grandparents old ranch house, Rhett has purchased some of the land and buildings from the old ranch, and is busy renovating his buildings.

When Ivy first arrives, Rhett helps her as she can’t get into her home due to a frozen lock. Ivy returns the favour by cooking christmas treats for him.

Ivy ends pulling the ole kissing under the mistletoe trick!

Again, whilst a sweet story, as all in this series have been, they all fall in love and declare their love so quickly. Another short quick read.

A story of Lyla and Lucas who didn’t think they would ever get married.
A lovely lady who likes everything organized right to the end and a cowboy who has difficulty with self esteem. He is hard working and also does voluntary work with dogs at a school for children with difficulties.
Seeing their faith tested and wanting to do what is right.
A great story that sometimes makes you want to cry and other times when things are going really well. A great ending.
I got this book free but this does not affect how I review a book.

Good read

1-3-2 - I read these out of order, which is ok because they could be standalone, but so much better in order. This author writes modern cowboy romance with knowledge and heart ❤. Sexy, hunky cowboys and independent, sassy women. A whisper of sex, but not specific. On to the next three. Highly recommend.

Ivy buys a Montana ranch house that belonged to her family years ago. She retreats to the house after her romance broke off and as a result, she lost her job. Rhett bought the ranch next to Ivy’s house. He is determined to prove that he can succeed at ranching.

Sweet romance

A sweet and thoughtful romance with compelling characters and an engaging premise set in a picturesque community. I mostly loved it, but it felt stilted and rushed at times.

Rhett and Ivy’s romance was interesting and I liked the small town settings and family relationships but while the author wrote about what the characters were feeling I didn’t feel their connection to each other. It’s really hard to love a story when my emotions aren’t engaged so this was just an okay read for me.

Ivy Bishop, with a successful career in Atlanta, jumped at the chance to reacquire her grandfather's childhood home, Rose Crown Ranch, planning to move her grandparents back there to live out the rest of her days. Unfortunately, they passed away before it could happen, and, when her personal life implodes, she walks away from her career and heads to the ranch outside Marietta to hole up and regroup until the new year. With plans for a solitary Christmas of decorating and baking, the long road-trip yields its first surprise in the stray puppy she picks up. The next is the handsome cowboy who purchased the rest of the ranch in an attempt to start over.
Rhett Dixon went a little crazy trying to deal with his Mother's declining health and death. When he comes to his senses, he purchase the land and foreman's house on Rose Crown Ranch, with every intention of turning it back into a successful working ranch, and keeping his promise to his mother to make her proud. He has more work than he can handle getting ready for his cattle, and doesn't want or need distractions.
Neither Ivy nor Rhett is looking for a future, as they still have too much of the past to get over, but they both realize that having a friend is important. It is so sweet watching them navigate their relationship and putting the past where it belongs. What makes this even sweeter is that it all takes place at Christmas time in Marietta.
The characters are brought to life well, and the descriptions of the town and the celebrations, are just amazing. This is a quick read, that can stand alone, but is an even richer read if your read Cordell and Payton's story in Cherish Me, Cowboy.
This story reinforces my desire to celebrate Christmas in Marietta with all its beauty and people.

I have read two of Alissa Callen novels - Beneath Outback Skies and Down Outback Roads and enjoyed both of them quite a bit. When I saw the opportunity to read something a little different from her, I jumped at the chance.

It took me a while to realise why I wasn't getting into this book as much as I had the others. The story was pretty good; the characters - at times could be considered one-dimensional - were drawn well and seemed to have their distinct places in the story; the location was...ahhh, there's the problem...

Alissa's previous books that I had read were based in Australia - my country of residence - so the characters were more vibrant (to me.) I knew what they were feeling and thinking because I am Australian, too. The dust and dirt and inaccessible roads and floods and bushfires and everything that makes our country so readily identifiable are missing from this book. It could have been anywhere (it was Montana) and that seemed, for me, to be the real drawback for me to get into the story - I made no connection with the location and, therefore, no real connection with the characters. I stress that this is all about me - the writing itself wasn't to blame. I just preferred the longer novels set in Oz.

Otherwise, if you like romance, Christmas, and a heart-warming story set in the cold climates of the Rocky Mountains, then I recommend this to you.

This is the third in the series about this cute small town in Montana which is heartwarming and entertaining.

Rhett Dixon has become somewhat of a recluse; he owns the Little Rose Crown ranch but stays to himself most days working the land. He went a little off the deep end when his mother got sick and still feels a little guilty about how he acted, not to mention riding a horse while drunk can get you injured. His sisters Peta and Kendall his twin, both live in town and often try to get him to join the human race again.

Ivy Bishop bought the Rose Crown house (next to Rhett’s place) several years ago as a holiday getaway. Now she is thinking about living in the house permanently or at least until she gets her life together. She left her job and boyfriend when she found he was cheating on her in Atlanta and needs a new start in life.

I have fallen in love with this town and its inhabitants. The people are warm and engaging and I like how the festive spirit of the season seems to bring out the best in everyone, including a cantankerous old man.

Rhett and Ivy are perfect for each other and help as they both spend their first Christmas without important people in their lives, he is missing his mom and she the grandparents who raised her. The two hit it off immediately and I like how they are together, the chemistry works. She is spunky and is used to dealing with grumpy men in boardrooms so when she walks into Rhett’s father’s house she has no trouble setting him straight, it is heartbreaking to find he has been missing his wife and has lashed out at loved ones rather than show it.

Rhett is very likeable but he seems to be always watching how others view him, I did not read the story that featured him during his wilder days but he wants to make amends to those he has hurt. I know the reason he let his father sulk for so long was because of his guilt, but with Ivy’s help I like how the future between father and son appears.

This is a short story so the romance happens fast with little drama, oh there is a short event when Rhett believes he is her rebound guy, but it is quickly solved. This is another cute addition to the series; I recommend this for those that enjoy seasonal books with heart.

I was so looking forward to Rhett's story after reading Payton's and Cordell's in Cherish Me, Cowboy. It was interesting how Ivy was also linked to Henry just like Cordell.

Rhett was a little wild in Cherish Me, Cowboy having a hard time dealing with his mother's heart attack, so seeing him in Mistletoe Cowboy with his ranch was nice. He had just bought a portion of the land and was working on repairing it for his first set of cattle from Ethan (which is Cordell's twin brother). Ivy had gone back to where her grandparent's had farmed the land and bought the main house, the rest had been sold to Rhett. She was looking for some peace and quiet and time to reevaluate her next steps. She had recently been burned by her ex.

My favorite quote from the story follows.
“My mom told me before she died it’s not our mistakes that define us but what we learn from them. It’s how we pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and get on with being who we were meant to be that counts.”

If you enjoyed this quote, you will really enjoy the story, as they are both learning from their past and paving a new future.

Her Mistletoe Cowboy by Alissa Callen is the second book in the Wildflower Ranch series and is also part of the Montana Born Christmas series. As was the case with the first book, I haven't read any of the other books in the second mentioned series but I feel that this installment works as a standalone. Book two is about a cowboy and a city girl who are both in mourning but find love and hope in each other.

Ivy Bishop was a corporate analyst who quit her job and the corner office she worked hard for as well as end her engagement as soon as she realized her ex-fiancé was cheating on her. She's come to Montana to spend the holidays alone, needing the time to get away from it all. After picking up a stray puppy named Molly, she meets a cowboy who makes her realize her heart was never broken after all.

Rhett Dixon, who readers met in book one, has become somewhat of a hermit but he enjoys focusing on his ranch. He didn't buy the entire property but is still surprised when the great-granddaughter of the original owner shows up to spend the holidays in the main house. He can tell that she's going through a rough time but he doesn't want to take advantage of her nor does he want to be her rebound guy.

The more time Ivy and Rhett spend together, the more difficult it gets for either of them to deny that it's more than just an attraction that's going on between them. Ivy is able to get Rhett to realize that his father truly is mourning the loss of Rhett's mother but is doing so in his own way. Rhett helps Ivy see that her feelings for her ex were never as intense as what she feels for Rhett.

I liked that the story didn't feel rushed and that the two main characters were genuinely nice people who weren't simply lusting after each other. This was an ideal read for the holiday season and a quick one at that. It's a story of love and family and being able to change one's plans when fate intervenes. Her Mistletoe Cowboy is a great addition to the series and gets four stars. ♥

Her Mistletoe Cowboy
By Alissa Callen

Have I mentioned I love these Montana born cowboy books? Well I do!! The stories are awesome and sweet.

This story is about Ivy and Rhett, Ivy had enough of her corporate life and a break up with her boyfriend led her to purchase the ancestral home of her Grandfather and made arrangements to move there in Montana home for Christmas, a very cold Christmas. But she also wanted to decorate the home for Christmas. She was also told about a rancher who owned the other home on the ranch. When she arrived at the ranch, the keyhole was frozen, so she went out walking in the cold to find the other rancher, Rhett, to help her.

Rhett was outside working and saw her walk up, she wasn’t dressed for the snow and she thought looked pregnant, but it was a puppy. He did help her with the key and to get into the house.

I really loved the way the characters developed, I loved the fact that they each wanted something, but not from each other, Rhett wanted to prove that he can succeed at ranching. Ivy wanted to restore the home her Grandfather grew up in, and wanted to decorate the house for Christmas and do a lot of baking. I loved the way the writer wrote the feelings Rhett had for his family, and how she showed he had feelings as well and wasn’t a bad cowboy, but that he has a heart as well.

I really enjoyed reading this book and can’t wait to read more, I hope this series continues as I would love to read more about the characters and the town they live in.

This is a clean book.

I received a copy of this book from Netgally for an honest opinion.
