In Dream Walker, J.R. Thomas accomplished a masterful blending of spiritual fantasy, coming-of-age and romance fiction.

This story focuses on young Jay Gibbs, whose Christmas gift from his grandfather opens the door to realms Jay never imagined existed and powers he fears coming to know. Before long, he discovers he's the Dream Walker, expected to safeguard secrets for which others would kill.

Thomas has done an excellent job of portraying Jay's transformation against an interwoven backdrop of legendary and contemporary challenges. Jay starts out as a modern-day great kid, with a healthy dose of skepticism about his grandfather's ramblings. What I love most about him is that, in the end, he's still that great kid. He changes, as his power grows, but he stays true to who he is.

One of the most enjoyable and refreshing aspects of this novel is the focus on family. Jay's grandfather, mother and father all have roles to play, to help him meet his destiny. Each of these supporting characters is fully rendered, three-dimensional and downright likable. The second half of the novel introduces new characters for the reader to love. Daisy is a fascinating heroine, powerful in her own right, and she's willing to take on any challenge for the sake of her family--and the boy she's coming to love.

(Full disclosure: I first read an early version of "Dream Walker" as a member of an online writing critique group. I loved it. I just reread "Dream Walker" because that's what I do with my all-time favorite books.)

This is the kind of book families can read and share.

It's the kind of book you never forget.

There were hints of a sequel within the story. I have no idea what happens in the sequel and I can't wait to find out.

The Dream Walker doesn't just talk to animals. Read him and he'll teach your soul a new song.

I loved this book, once I started it I could not put it down. I love how he was able to make all the ideas and myths flow seamlessly within each other. This is a book I would recommend to anyone, I'd let my children read it and I've told several people to read it already and they have liked it as well.

I can't wait for the next book to come out.

What a wonderful story! Jay Gibbs and Daisy Evans are connected through their Native American Cherokee families, spiritual ties and North Carolina history making the story spellbinding, complex and multifaceted. J.R. Dreams come to all of us but this story goes above and beyond. Jay Gibbs and Daisy Evans have an entire lifetime ahead of them and J.R. Thomas will surely bring the continuation of this wonderful story to us to enjoy!
