Special Agent in Charge Jaden Malik’s meeting with the old gray alpha was the first step in an attempt to convince him a fight by his pack against their removal by the Bureau of Lupine Affairs or the BLA would not only be futile but would lead to their utter destruction. When he’s attacked by the son of the old alpha, he takes the handsome man hostage to ensure the pack’s cooperation and then finds to his horror that the man is his mate. Tyler Jenkins is furious at his capture and Malik’s plans to take his pack to one of the government preserves for wolf shifters. Malik is a shifter himself, and Tyler can’t understand how he can betray his own kind. Tyler’s pack has evaded capture for over thirty years, since the camps were first created, and he has no intention of being put behind bars. Despite his growing attraction to Jaden, Tyler manages a dangerous, daring escape with his pack, turning the tables on Malik by putting him in his own silver handcuffs and taking him with them. Tyler has only one chance to save what’s growing between them. He has to make it good or risk losing his lover and his mate forever.
World building, a very different and not so wonderful life for shifters and the introduction of some great characters that hopefully we will see much more of as the series expands.
Shifter’s don’t have a great life in this story. They are rounded up like cattle, taken from their homes and housed in compounds around the country. Their children are taken from them to be trained as future agents and life as they knew it ends abruptly.
The BLA (Bureau of Lupine Affairs) is a Government Department responsible for rounding up all the packs and will use any force necessary. The teams of agents are made up of large aggressive wolves who have had any compassion they may have once had trained out of them. They truly don’t see they are wrong in imprisoning their own kind on the orders of humans who are afraid of them.
Jaden Malik is one of these agents and leads a team which includes two of his brothers. He was taken away from his family as a small child and trained by the Government to go out and continue their work. He has no compassion, not even for his brothers, and has no compunction about using excessive force to get the job done.
His latest mission is to ‘persuade’ a pack of grey wolves to pack up their home and move to a compound but when the alpha’s son, Tyler Jenkins, doesn’t cooperate Jaden ends up holding him hostage until the negotiations turn in his favour.
The dichotomy comes when Jaden realises that Tyler is his mate. How can two men on different sides, who believe in different things and whose lives are wrapped up together in a war of sorts be expected to ever get along? At the same time how can they be strong enough to ignore the mating pull that wants to entwine them so tightly together they will be able to read each other’s thoughts. The pull of the bond is too strong for even a stubborn and cold wolf like Jaden to ignore and once that bite is given all bets are off.
A daring escape plan leads to the hostage situation being reversed and the two men at each other’s throats once again. The love and support that Tyler offers his pack strikes a chord with Jaden and his brothers and slowly memories from their past creep in and they begin to question what their life may have been like if circumstances had been different. When a BLA team member with a grudge catches up with them things change drastically and decisions have to made in the blink of an eye. Jaden must finally decide what means the most to him and where his priorities lie.
I really enjoyed this story and it has left me excited to see what happens as the series continues.
Most of this book is kind of bit an info dump. Ok, yes, I know it's hard to start a new series. So the author needs to build the story to makes it more believeable. And I liked it. The whole BLA (Bureau of Lupine Affairs) vs. Shifters, and how they struggled againts humans too.
And well, what can I say? Ms. West can made one of the best chemistry in shifter books I've ever read. I really liked her writing. But in this book, Jaden and Ty barely spend time together. Because of the 'situation' between them. They only hooked up twice for as long I could remember. Damn, I wanna see them together more often.
Hope I would still see them in the nextbook! *fingers crossed*
The description of the book says it all so I'll just give my own impressions of it.
I didn't care so much for Jaden in the beginning of the book. He was to overbearing and everything had to be done exactly his way and I really didn't care for his thoughts on how he'd use Ty as his mate and then abandon him. As the book went on I slowly liked him more and more, but it wasn’t until the last chapter that I really liked him.
I really liked Ty right off the bat. His strong personality and strong sense of right and wrong made him the hero and the dominant Alpha in my eyes. Whereas I felt Jaden was really the dominant Alpha in the book only because of his size and unwavering dominant personality.
The book was written in both Jaden and Ty's POV. The angst level was medium.
There were only 2 things I was left unhappy about at the end only because they were left as unanswered questions. First, I really wanted to know Ty's father would go back to being his usual self and would be okay in the end. The last he was mentioned it sounded to me (as the reader) that he was extremely depressed and kind of only lingering and on his way to dying. Again... that was only my impression.
Second, I really was hoping the Alaskan group would be able to overcome the drugs given by the government to keep them from shifting and begin to show signs of being able to shift, but alas twas not meant to be. Maybe in book 2 of the series it will happen. We'll have to wait.
I don't know why I'm always drawn to stories that show how cruel humanity can rationalize itself into being due to fear. I get so emotionally invested in the characters of these stories though, and I love to see people rise above the hatred they've been immersed in.
Jaden's life was so sad and the brainwashing that he was subjected to was reprehensible. He truly was lucky that he had his brothers as a mini pack while subject to the BLA. Not that he's out of their influence though, how much potential damage to their propaganda can he and the other Alaskans cause? They were model BLA goons, but having rejected it, they could be ideal spokesman against it.
I'd like to see more into the benefits of finding a true mate and a soul mate in this world.
I am always looking for a new writer of shifter stories, so I was happy to pick these books up for review! A new shifter world makes me happy.
This is a pretty dark world. It’s our world, but shifters exist, and are hated by humans. There is a government agency, BLA (Bureau of Lupine Affairs) that is focused on moving shifter packs to reservations. They pack them up, separate the children from the families, and drug them so they can’t shift or mate. The kids are recruited in to the organization, becoming the next generation of agents. The plan seems to be to exterminate them long term by eliminating the birth of new shifters, instead of just shooting them all. I had a hard time with this, obviously! Too much like the removal of Native Americans to reservations, and too much like WWII Germany.
Our main characters are Jaden, a BLA agent, indoctrinated into the system as a child. He is so brainwashed he doesn’t even realize what he is doing is wrong. On the other side we have Tyler, whose very small pack as been discovered living peacefully on the pack lands they have held for a couple hundred years. Jaden and his group of thugs (Alaskan wolf shifters) show up to move the pack, Tyler’s dad is the ineffectual Alpha who has no clue what to do and agrees to hop in the trucks. Tyler is a young shifter, Alpha eventually, and pretty damn sure he doesn’t want to just hop in the truck. Unfortunately there isn’t much he can do. He’s an Alpha, but so is Jaden, and Jaden’s group has guns.
But. Jaden gets a good sniff of Tyler, realizes he’s his mate, and decides to have a little taste. Things get dramatic, Tyler ends up as Jaden’s hostage insuring the pack behaves, then things get sexy. The pack is eventually forced to pack up and off they go. Of course they don’t just meekly go, Tyler has a plan….
I mostly liked this story. I liked the world, it’s icky, but I can see this will be a fun world for Shannon to play in. The potential for drama and chaos is high. My issue was I didn’t like Jaden! He’s a dick. Obviously he has issues, he was literally torn out of his mothers arms when he was two, and has just barely managed to keep his two brothers with him as they moved through the BLA program. Just about the point I had some sympathy and started to like him, he’d say something nasty and fuck it up! Tyler I liked ok. I think I would have liked this book more if more time had been spent at the beginning introducing us to Jaden and Tyler as individuals, so we had more back story for them. I think if I had seen flashbacks to their early life I would have more sympathy for them both. Lots of limited page count was spent giving us details about the BLA, but not enough time was spent on character development. Then Jaden and Tyler are dragged together kicking and screaming, fighting and fucking, with all this drama happening around them, but not much couple development. I’m not even sure they liked each other.
They are mates, so they are bonded, and do have some awesome sex, but I’m pretty sure they were both virgins, or at least very inexperienced, but they REALLY seem to know what they are doing. Perfect blow jobs with swallowing, massive orgasms, and lots of biting. It was hot, but a bit unrealistic. Yes, I know, they are werewolves, but still!
There were some editing issues, enough that I noticed but didn’t really distract me from the story. The writing was ok, but disliking a main character, and not liking the relationship between them, made this not a great book for me. This one was ok, didn’t love it, but I’ll read the next one!

Moonstruck is the start of a new series and it is written to get the reader's attention and ends with readers wanting more.
This is a story that I would say is dystopic-like, after humans discovered the existence of shape-shifters and magnanimously announce their horror of the new species which then results to genocide and all that stupid jazz. Normal behaviour if you ask me, for what do our politicians do when faced with the unknown? Destroy and conquer!
Well, they did destroy and conquer the shape-shifter population but thanks to PETA and multi-media, they went on the down low and pretended to behave and be accepting. NOT! The result was really a slow destruction of the future and the turning of the old into weapons.
Malik is one such weapon. Taken from his family at a very young age, he and his brothers were raised in concentration camps and slowly brainwashed then trained to follow. Their duty is to work unquestioning under a government that orders them to slowly take down all shape-shifter clans and do away with them. Malik does his job, he does as he is trained. Then he meets Tyler Jenkins, alpha son of a clan he is sent to take down.
Tyler is an alpha but he bows to the authority of his father. Unfortunately, age and reason renders his father doubtful, fearful and indecisive. The meet with Malik, the Bureau of Lupine Affairs representative , goes wrong and he finds himself under hostage and his clan dispersed. He also finds out that Malik is his mate and gets mated without his full consent. What he does next not only surprises his father but his new mate.
This is just the beginning of a series and there is a lot of information to be taken in but it all reads quite well and smooth. Tyler's actions creates a problem for himself and Malik's men. Going against the government has made them terrorists. What he will do next to free his people, well, that comes in the next installments.
I’m a huge fan of Shannon West’s books. I love her alphas. They tend to be tough, in-your-face, and totally unapologetic for their actions. You might even say a bit overbearing, but that’s one of her traits. Oh but goodness, when they fall, they fall hard, lol. But one of the things I’ve always wanted was a little more world building in the stories.
Well, ask and ye shall receive, lol.
Holy cow, the premise of this series is strong and well explained. So many shifter stories (mine included) are based on ‘what if’? What if humans found out? What would happen?
Moonstruck takes a good, hard look at ‘what if’.
And it’s not necessary pretty how humans react to the fact they aren’t alone on this planet. But that’s not surprising. Need some examples? What happened to Native Americans when settlers wanted their lands? Or study up on Nazi Germany and how they tried to whip out an entire race. Yeah, serious stuff. This book kept me hooked from page one. I’ve read it twice already and you can bet I can’t wait to get my hands on book two.
Frankly, I think this the best book Shannon West has written to date. And I’ve read a lot of her stuff, lol.
Original review on Molly Lolly Four stars! I’m always fascinated by stories of a world where shifters are “out”. It’s an interesting thing to consider. Being the fantasy thinker that I am, I like to believe that it’s a possibility that magical creatures that can change forms are real. However in the world created by Shannon West things aren’t as nice as we would like to hope if shifters were ever found out. However it’s also far more realistic in how we as humans deal with things that are perceived to be different. The story itself was good. I did feel some of the things that helped Ty with his escape were on the easy side. Thing just happened to be where they needed them. Jaden and Ty didn’t want to like each other but the more time they spent together the more their feelings grew. There were a few times that Jaden fought too hard against escaping when his view earlier in the book was almost the opposite. All in all it’s a great beginning to a new series. A solid happy for now and I can’t wait to see how Shannon continues in the next book.
Loved it! I love how Shannon West can bring us the most hardened alpha types who have had their walls built up around their hearts so high that when those walls come crashing down, we are thunderstruck right along with the character! Jaden has lived his life the way he was expected by the government. Denied the right to accept his heritage as a wolf, he is raised with his brothers to become soldiers for the government to capture packs and bring them to government controlled preservation. This is how he meets Ty. Ty is the son of an alpha who should have passed the reigns to his son but the pack has too much respect for their aging alpha to bump him out. Ty is hot headed and not going down without a fight! But how do you fight the enemy when said enemy turns out to be your mate? This is another exciting start to a series and I cannot wait to see what the next book is going to bring us!
The first like 50% of this book was extremely sloowwww! Like I contemplated throwing the towel in for awhile! But I stuck with it and I'm glad I did. it didn't become a 5 star book for me but it did turn out pretty good. I think the problem was the BLA thing. Like The fact that Jaden and his brothers aren't full shifters. Their shifting ability was chemically removed. Tbh the whole human against wolves thing in this book was very very sad! it was very similar to the Nazi- Jewish issue. Jaden and Tyler are a great couple. I Do wish they had more than one full on sex scene tho. The only full sex scene was super hot! Even tho it wasn't super awesome I think I will try the second book in the series bc is about the brother Brandt who sounds like such a sweetie! Omg I just realized that this book totally covers tons of genres...Gay for you( which I wish had been more of a focus in this book), men in uniform, shifters, cherry popping, steamy sex, enemies to lovers. ..wow.
I am a long time fan of Shannon's writing, and her latest series does not disappoint.
The action, adventure and sexy characters combined with a well developed story line make MOONSTRUCK a fast paced and entertaining paranormal reading experience.
I loved the concept behind this series. Mirroring the shameful treatment of American Indians and Asian Americans by the United States Government in the past, MOONSTRUCK is a chilling reminder that humanity often fails to learn from the mistakes of their past.
Dramatic, sensual and emotionally complex, MOONSTRUCK is the first book in a series that I'm looking forward to following in the future!
Some character misses here in consistency drag it down. It had some real "suspend belief" options. the core of the story where shifters were being rounded up and placed on reservations is a great one - and different then what I've read a lot of before. I loved that premise. I liked Ty and Jaden and totally got the lust. I think it was the fact Ty comes off initially as not an alpha and changes - so when he goes all toppy it felt strange.
This book is very different from her other wolf pack series. This one humans are aware they are not alone, and treat the wolves horribly. It's really sad. It's a good book though.
I liked this book. A werewolf mating bond and the underdog (no pun intended) taking control and saving his pack. The US government is not in a good light in this book with the age old thing of trying to subdue and wipe out what they are not comfortable with.
Stupid book! The female lead in this book is always crying and scared even though she is supposedly a bad ass and in higher rank than her mate and everyone on the team. Such a cry baby, drove me crazy.
Hard to rate this one. Parts of it I really enjoyed, but others...it was hard to really get into it because of all the animosity and antagonism. I doubt I'll continue the series.
