The history of the island of Sicily has been that of a struggle between European and Asiatic races for the possession of the most fertile island in the Mediterranean basin. In earlier days Greeks and Carthaginians, in later days Normans and Saracens, were the combatants; and the peace of the island has been secure only when it has been recognised as the dependency of some mighty Continental power, whether in Africa or in Europe...
This is the ebook version of a history book published in 1890. So decriptions of today's Sicily, especially its geography and names of places are outdated and not easy to follow. Some facts are obsolete, e.g. the claim that Sicily was once part of a land connection between the Italian peninsula and Africa. It's probably not worth your time if you want to get a current opinion or a quick overview. It still is an interesting read and might add some perspective to modern history texts. But I would have expected a hint to the original source and that it is a text written more than a century ago instead of "published 2014". Neither the description nor the beginning of the book point this out. Very poor.
