This was absolutely outstanding, Traumaland is up there amongst some of the best thrillers, and most certainly the best YA thriller I’ve ever read. I can’t think of anything that comes close.
I don’t want to spoiler anything at all, but the general outline is that following an accident Eli has been left with missing memories and more frighteningly no emotion, he can’t feel anything, so alongside therapy he’s working on other methods, including attending Traumaland, an underground club that promises to make you feel.
Amazing writing, great character building. fantastic story telling.
The audio narration was fabulous 🎧

Jeśli kiedykolwiek marzyliście o thrillerze Young Adult z prawdziwie cyberpunkowym pazurem, to Traumaland jest spełnieniem tych marzeń.
Poznajmy Eliego, chłopaka, który po tragicznym wypadku przestaje czuć… I to nie fizycznie, ale emocjonalnie. Zmagając się z traumą i lukami w pamięci, próbuje zrozumieć, co się tak naprawdę wydarzyło. Jednak przez pewne zrządzenie losu, trafia do miejsca, które zmienia wszystko.
To miejsce przypomina coś w rodzaju klubu tylko dla wtajemniczonych i złamanych dusz. Z pozoru to rozrywka, a w rzeczywistości emocjonalny labirynt. Za odpowiednią opłatą można tam przeżyć najbardziej makabryczne scenariusze z perspektywy pierwszej osoby. Ale w pewnym momencie, coś w nim drga. Bo scenariusze zaczynają dotyczyć bliskich mu osób.
Ta książka była dla mnie jak braindance z Cyberpunka 2077. Intensywna, niepokojąca i absolutnie wciągająca. Motyw utowarowienia ludzkich emocji, eksperymentowania na wspomnieniach, przekraczania granic empatii i etyki, to to coś co przyciągnęło mnie do stron tej historii niesamowicie mocno.

I've lost count of the number of opening sentences I've written and deleted for this review so far. I'm still processing and probably will be for a while. I also don't want to give too much away because Traumaland is plot-driven and full of potential spoilable moments. But it's also hugely character-driven and I could talk about Eli forever. As someone who has experienced trauma and therapy, I related to Eli maybe a little too hard. For a book with 'trauma' in the title, the narrative voice Silver has lovingly crafted for Eli is rich with dark sarcastic humour and hilarious asides that break the 4th wall, giving me major Fleabag vibes. I feel it's impossible to not fall in love with Eli immediately and that's really important for the story because you have to root for him. Frankly, if you don't, you're the psychopath.

I realise I've not really mentioned the plot yet because I'm terrified of ruining anything for potential readers (PSA everyone needs to read this) but I will give you a glimpse. Eli is 17 and he's experienced head trauma following an accident that ensued as a result of his manic behaviour. He is left numb, literally unable to feel emotions. He's desperate to feel something, anything again but is convinced that the easiest way to do this is to force negative emotions by doing bad things. In the pursuit of this, Eli discovers a dangerous underground club called Traumaland where revellers get high on other people's trauma. But it's ok because the trauma is all fictionalised and acted out by professionals... Or is it? That's all I'm willing to give you. What I will add is if the quote "meet me in Montauk" means anything to you, you're going to want to read this book.

There's no point being coy about this; Silver is a master at his craft. Happyhead and Dead Happy pushed some boundaries in terms of what YA speculative dystopia could be. His relentless focus on teenage mental health is honourable and extremely important in giving young readers the representation they crave and the reassurance that they are not alone. Traumaland goes a little bit further. What Silver does with this novel is show us how sick it is to revel in others' trauma, and then hold up a mirror to the reader to make us realise that's exactly what we're doing when we watch horror films, or read dystopian novels, or even watch the drama unfold on a British street in one of the popular soaps. We consume trauma for entertainment, but it's ok because it's not real. Silver asks what happens when it is real? Would we turn away?

This novel is obviously going to come with some triggers, but if anyone needs reassurance before picking it up, a lot of the potential triggers occur off page. In fact, Silver leaves you to fill in a lot of the gaps for yourself, so you almost choose the level of brutality for yourself. Silver's experience as a mental health nurse means that he knows the effect this stuff could have on readers, and so he's very good at finding the balance of what to show and what to imply. I will never not read one of his books. Thank you to Rock the Boat for sending us a proof. It's already looking a little dog-eared as our librarians are taking turns with it.

This book was sooo intense and I was absolutely obsessed. I sat on my living room floor and devoured the whole thing in a single sitting, because I couldn’t rest until I knew how it ended. And WOW how it ended!! This will truly have you on the edge of your seat the entire time wondering what on Earth is happening, and you’re going to enjoy it.
I love a clever thriller that incorporates a lot of hefty real world commentary, and this certainly packed a punch. Not only was the baseline plot ridiculously captivating and twisty throughout, but the constant dissection of the uk mental health system and the commodification of trauma was excellently done. It’s fast paced and shocking, but also makes you think on a deeper level, and that underlying sinister message of the story is truly haunting. Josh is so skilled at what he does here, and he’s not afraid to show you the deepest, darkest facets of humanity and lay them bare for the reader. It really pushes the boundaries for ya fiction and I love that.
One of my favourite things about Josh’s writing is his use of humour, and how it perfectly balances out the grittiness of his stories. Eli is an absolutely hilarious character, and his dry and deadpan stereotypically British humour was so perfect. It’s rare that books make me laugh out loud, but this one had me giggling. I loved being inside the chaos of his mind, his thoughts felt so real and relatable. The internal monologue was excellent, and I was just picturing scenes of the book playing out like an episode of Fleabag. Just an absolutely delightful reading experience. I loved him.
If you love dystopian books reminiscent of shows like Black Mirror - you’re going to adore this book. So so good.

This book was WILD!! I can't even talk about it because I'm afraid I will spoil something. Think Black Mirror meets Flatliners. Loved every second of it, but damn 16yrs+ at the very least.

Every time I go to a bookstore, I see this bloody book in the window, so I thought it was about time to see what all the fuss is about. And holy crap, I think I just found a new YA author. This book was fucking incendiary. A queer YA thriller like I've never read before. Centred around Eli, a boy who has lost his memory in what he thinks was a terrible car crash, and who cannot feel anything anymore. Not love or joy or warmth, but also, not pain or fear or sadness either. An interesting premise. And I adored the slow burn and hilarious start, I loved that he really took his time, because it's not until about 30% that the book suddenly switches from what I would call fairly traditional contemporary YA, into a fucking mad-intense mystery / horror / thriller within the space of one chapter. And from that point onwards, it just doesn't slow down. It twists and turns and red herrings you all the way to the final chapter. And then it ends on a bloody cliff-hanger (I think it's only fair to tell you that), so there better be a freaking sequel!!??? With solid, propulsive prose, impressive plotting, some incredibly relevant themes that don't pull any punches, and some endearing character work, I may now have to go back and read everything this author has ever written. I love it when that happens.

The audiobook performance by Louis Hill adds even more depth, especially in the quieter, more introspective moments.
One of the standout passages comes near the end, where a character reflects on why we consume scary media in the first place. It’s a brilliant moment of self-awareness that adds another layer to the novel: What do we gain from confronting fear in fiction? Does it prepare us for the real thing, or give us a safe place to process it?

Okay I just finished this at 2 am, I couldn’t put the book down wow. This is like the best book I’ve ever read and I’m not even exaggerating. It’s so black mirror coded and literally encompasses everything I love about a book. So many twists, this book literally ate away at my brain and I can’t believe the way it ended.

Josh Silver znów to zrobił! Po fenomenalnym tytule “Projekt Happy Head”, Autor powraca z thrillerem, który stawia traumatyczne wspomnienia i trudne relacje na pierwszym planie.❤️
Eli nie odczuwa emocji, nie posiada uczuć. Siedemnastolatek, po udziale w niebezpiecznym wypadku, zmaga się z traumą oraz lukami w pamięci. Kiedy traci nadzieję na poprawę swojego stanu, przypadkowo odkrywa tytułowy Traumaland - miejsce, w którym za pieniądze można z pomocą wirtualnej rzeczywistości przenieść się do symulacji koszmarnych wydarzeń i z perspektywy pierwszej osoby przeżywać i odczuwać tajemnicze historie. Wejście do jednej z nich sprawi, że Eli zapragnie odkryć tajemnicę podziemnego klubu, który kryje w sobie więcej mroku, niż można przypuszczać.😵
Ta historia to istna petarda. Już sam początek mocno wciąga, trudna sytuacja Eliego, który zmaga się z traumatycznymi przeżyciami i trudnymi relacjami rodzinnymi, wywołuje gęsią skórkę. Chłopak jest w stanie zrobić naprawdę wiele, aby móc znowu czuć strach, ból czy lęk, łamiąc nawet prawo. To jednak dopiero początek tej historii, która zaprowadzi go do jaskini rozpaczy i złudzeń mieszających się z rzeczywistością. Cieszy nas, że coraz częściej w tego typu tytułach dosyć mocny nacisk kładzie się na zdrowie psychiczne oraz to, jak ważne jest otoczenie i chęć pomocy z zewnątrz. I choć może rozwój wydarzeń nie do końca pokaże cały proces od jak najlepszej strony, to i tak lepiej jest mówić o tym temacie, niż udawać, że on nie istnieje. 🫂
Mocnym wyróżnikiem jest też tutaj skupienie się na emocjach. Brak odczuwania jakichkolwiek uczuć nie jest dobry, nawet jeśli jest to forma obrony przed tym, co wywołało w nas traumę. Jako ludzie potrzebujemy miłości i radości, potrzebujemy się także czasem powkurzać, wykrzyczeć na głos, powiedzieć coś, czego będziemy żałować. Każda z tych emocji jest nam potrzebna, aby móc normalnie funkcjonować.🫶
“Traumaland” to historia o relacji z samym sobą, ale i nie tylko. Historia Eliego zaprowadzi czytelników w najczarniejsze zakamarki ludzkiej psychiki, a także odkryje prawdę, której nikt się nie spodziewa.🔥

Ta historia to istna petarda. Już sam początek mocno wciąga, trudna sytuacja Eliego, który zmaga się z traumatycznymi przeżyciami i trudnymi relacjami rodzinnymi, wywołuje gęsią skórkę. Chłopak jest w stanie zrobić naprawdę wiele, aby móc znowu czuć strach, ból czy lęk, łamiąc nawet prawo. To jednak dopiero początek tej historii, która zaprowadzi go do jaskini rozpaczy i złudzeń mieszających się z rzeczywistością. Cieszy nas, że coraz częściej w tego typu tytułach dosyć mocny nacisk kładzie się na zdrowie psychiczne oraz to, jak ważne jest otoczenie i chęć pomocy z zewnątrz. I choć może rozwój wydarzeń nie do końca pokaże cały proces od jak najlepszej strony, to i tak lepiej jest mówić o tym temacie, niż udawać, że on nie istnieje. 🫂
Mocnym wyróżnikiem jest też tutaj skupienie się na emocjach. Brak odczuwania jakichkolwiek uczuć nie jest dobry, nawet jeśli jest to forma obrony przed tym, co wywołało w nas traumę. Jako ludzie potrzebujemy miłości i radości, potrzebujemy się także czasem powkurzać, wykrzyczeć na głos, powiedzieć coś, czego będziemy żałować. Każda z tych emocji jest nam potrzebna, aby móc normalnie funkcjonować.🫶
“Traumaland” to historia o relacji z samym sobą, ale i nie tylko. Historia Eliego zaprowadzi czytelników w najczarniejsze zakamarki ludzkiej psychiki, a także odkryje prawdę, której nikt się nie spodziewa.🔥

I basically binged this over 2 days and stayed up until 2am last night to finish this book and OMGGGG 😦😦😦
I guess Traumaland is the new drug of 2025 and I'm already hooked and need another dose immediately!
As soon as I started the book I was very intrigued and then the further in I got, the more hooked I was!
This is definitely my favourite book by this author! It reminded me alot of Black Mirror which I've started somewhat recently.
If you're in the mood for a dark, dangerous and deceptive story that constantly keeps you on the edge of your seat then look no further!

Macie czasem wrażenie, ze o pewnych książkach mówi się zdecydowanie za mało i przez za krótki okres czasu? Traumaland od wydawnictwa Time4Ya wpadło w moje ręce dużo później niż innym recenzentom [ tak zwana współpraca reklamowa] z mojej winy - na początku podałam zły numer telefonu do wysyłki, a za drugim razem przyszła, kiedy nie mogłam osobiście odebrać i czekała na swój moment u rodziny. Wtedy już niewiele o niej widziałam w bookmediach. A tak nie powinno być! To nie jest książka, która powinna być pochłonięta przez to jak szybko mija żywotność książek w social mediach, to jest świetny thriller young adult, o którym powinno się mówić głośno i dużo. Zadaje całkiem sporo różnych pytań: Czy emocje powinny być na sprzedaż? Czy warto zatajać prawdę? Gdzie leży granica pozwalania dorosłym decydować za młodzież? Gdzie leży granica cybernetyki, manipulowania ludzką pamięcią? Co jest prawdą, a co dziełem maszyny? Czy wirtualna rzeczywistość jest w stanie dać nam to, czego potrzebujemy? Mogłabym tak dalej spać pytaniami jak z rękawa.
Moje pierwsze skojarzenia z książką to było coś pomiędzy "Matrixem", "Incepcją", a nawet "Za Niebieskimi Drzwiami" z takich historii dla młodszych. Nasz główny bohater, Eli, ma 17 lat i czuje się kompletnie odrętwiały. Nie pamięta 2 miesięcy ze swojego życia, a jego terapia ma się niedługo skończyć. Żeby mieć z nią spokój udaje, że sobie wszystko przypomniał, powtarzając elementy układanki po swojej terapeutce, rodzicach czy bracie. Ma jednak swój poboczny projekt - okrada ludzi z telefonów, żeby poczuć chociaż na chwilę ich ból, panikę. Jeden z takich telefonów ma z tyłu naklejkę "Traumaland. Poczuj, że żyjesz". I może nasz bohater zapomniałby o niej, ale znajduje pudło na poddaszu, a w nim instrukcje swoim pismem co powinien zrobić. I nawet wtedy nie jest sobie w stanie nic przypomnieć. It started off a bit slower than I was in the mood for, but I’m glad I kept with it. Once MMC enters traumaland; the story really starts to fly.
It has some black mirror vibes and I didn’t quite know where it was going, but even when I figured it out, I was still invested to keep listening.

Really enjoyed this book! Picked up on a whim in a book shop, not my usual vibes but really glad I got it! Interesting read and great storyline, twisty and captivating! And oh my god, the ending!!!
