**I recieved a copy of this book by the author for my honest review**
Once a Monster, always a Monster....Right?
In Full Circle Michael was introduced to us an abusive drunk that shouldn't be allowed to walk amungst civilization. I stewed for days after finding out that he would get his own book... was apprehensive about reading this book because I didn't want him humanized, didn't think he was worthy of a "his side of the story".
Within the first couple of pages I became increasingly irritated that Michael would in fact get my sympothy... I didn't want him to be the "misunderstood man", a "lost soul looking for a light". I thought of a dozen different ways the book would play out, and I'm so happy I was wrong. Michael continously stopped me short.
I hate spoilers & there for will not ruin this for anyone with them. But I implore you to buy this book & read it!
Ashley John is an amazing & awe inspiring author. He's proven that time & time again, but completely out shined all expectations on this one.
Saving Micheal started as the most dreaded of Ashley's books for me & ended as my favorite of them all.
PHENOMENAL!

I've been dithering over how to rate this story - do I give it 3.75 stars, or 4? As you can see, I settled on 4. After reading the first two books in this series, I was really eager to find out more about Michael. After book two especially he was an easy character to hate - we saw him at his worst, and his worst was being violent towards the MC of that book, Porter. Of course I wanted Porter to have an HEA and Michael was not part of that, but I had a feeling there was more to him than what met the eye and Ashley John proved me right.

What I like about Ashley John's characters is they are not two dimensional. Michael is a perfect case in point. He had more depths than just drunken-bully. It just took a while and Caleb to show us...although, did it? Because, despite his thought process, Michael was the one who went into a burning building to save Caleb. He could have walked away - I liked this. I liked that the author showed us Michael's integrity, however deeply drowned in alcohol it was, before Caleb was in the picture. It showed that it was truly the Michael Caleb saw that we were seeing, not just a character conveniently changed to make a story fit.

Talking of Caleb - oh was he a sweetie! Boy oh boy did I like him. So nice - yet he wasn't perfect...I saw what he did to Ace! Again, even with this character that could potentially be 'perfect' Ashley John managed to round him out, make him more real.

It took a bit of thinking on how to rate this book because sometimes it did seem a tad convenient...but after I thought about it, I realised that fits the Surf Bay series just right. It is a feel good read - despite some angstier moments - because it is inherently about love and relationships. And yes sometimes it's a little bit rose-tinted glasses, but that's the kind of story it is. Enough drama to keep you interested but with characters and relationships that warm the heart. Don't read them expecting a gritty true-life scenario, heartache and angst. That's not what these books are about. And I have to say, I love how Ashley John portrays love; perfectly imperfect.

At times I felt a bit more research wouldn't have gone astray, and there were some English to American-isms that got missed (icing instead of frosting for example) but nothing that dragged me from the story. An extra edit might have caught some of these things but, like I say, none of it was detrimental my enjoyment of the book.

I have to say, this is an author I hugely admire for his hard work and attitude. He is young, but he had a dream and decided to follow it. He doesn't expect it all to just happen, he works really hard to make it a reality. Reading back that sentence it sounds like I know him - but I don't. I reviewed a book of his and gave it ...well, it wasn't the most favourable review ever. Instead of getting upset though, he thanked me and took on board the points and asked me to review (here) his next book, knowing full well that I had not previously connected with his work. Way to go Ashley! With that attitude you will go a long way - in my humble opinion!

I couldn't put this book down.
Michael is the town's deputy sheriff and he spends most days drunk or searching for his next drink, however one night he stumbles across a fire at the town veterinary surgery. Inside is Caleb, the vet, trying desperately to save the animals in his care.
As much as Michael tries to distance himself from Caleb, Caleb has an annoying habit of turning up where Michael is and slowly works himself into Michael's life.
When Michael finally turns his life around there are plenty in Surf Bay unwilling to accept his attempts, but Caleb stays strong.
Dealing with the demons of his past might be the only way for Michael to make amends with the town folk.
Amazing finale in the surf bay trilogy.
I wasn't keen on Michael in book 2 but this book changed my mind about him. So well written, I was drawn in and didn't want the book to end but such a perfect ending.
Well Done Ashley John

My heart goes out to Michael for having to see what he saw at a young age and hold it in for 29 years. Michael is the town Deputy Sheriff and a drunk. Caleb is the towns vet and a sweetheart. when a fire at the vets clinic put those to together. (sparks fly) Caleb does what he needs to do to make Michael his friend. Caleb does not take NO for a answer(which gets under Michael skins). Caleb is someone Michael needs in his live to tear down the walls that Michael has built around him. Caleb is just what Michael needs to bring back the Michael the town loved at one time. And in doing that the love that they have for each other becomes strong!! In the end love does miracle things!! I laughed, screamed and cried when reading this book!! Ashley you are a VERY TALENT author!!! i can't wait to see what you have coming next in Surf Bay!! (I hope to hear more about Oliver and Charlie)!!!

Saving Michael
5 gut-wrenching stars

We thought Michael had hit rock bottom when he brutally attacked Porter, his then boyfriend, in Full Circle, but he continues his downward spiral in Saving Michael. Never going to bed sober, and waking up to the bottle as well. He is now homeless, sleeping in his car or on his fathers couch.
In Saving Micheal we learn what caused the downward spiral. He witnessed something horrible as a young child, his mothers murder and was never the same after.

Caleb is the local Vet. Caleb literally runs into Michael one Morning, and later that night Michael rescues the young Vet from a fire at his Veterinary Clinic. Caleb is drawn to Micheal. He wants to Save Michael. But is he too late? Is Michael beyond saving?

I'll be honest.. After the beating Michael gave Porter in Full Circle, I wasn't sure I wanted to read this book. In reality a Leopard doesn't change his spots. Once an abuser, always an abuser. It was very hard to be inside Michael's head. To read what Michael witnessed as a child and the way he was treated by his father, you can understand why he went down the path he did. To keep all that hurt and anger bottled up for years. To try and numb the pain with alcohol. To think that life is just too much, too painful and not worth living. I love broken characters, but depressed characters hit close to home and are sometimes very hard to read. I also know that anger is depression turned inside out, and the two go hand in hand. I know you lash out, most of the time for no good reason, at the people you love the most. Add alcohol to the mix, and it becomes a lethal combination. I can't imagine this was an easy book for Ashley to write. I was only inside Michael's head for a few days, he spent months there, writing this character, and he did a superb job at it.

Caleb is the polar opposite of Michael. He grew up in a loving family environment. He was and is still well taken care of by his parents. He has a great and loving relationship with his sister. He is accepted for who he is, and who he chooses to love. Caleb is a very happy go lucky kind of guy. He always has a smile on his face and can see the good in everyone. He sees the glass as half full, not half empty. He doesn't give up. He sees what he wants, and goes after it. He wants Michael and he hounds and pesters him until Michael eventually can't resist his charm anymore.

Michael is scared, because he is drawn to Caleb. Caleb awakens feelings in Micheal that he doesn't think he deserves to feel. He is terrified of hurting Caleb, and repeating the pattern his father set into place so long ago. He feels he is evil and unworthy of the friendship, and later, the love Caleb offers him. I eventually saw in Micael what Caleb was drawn to. I too wanted to save Michael. I wanted to protect him from the evil things he had witnessed as a child. I wanted to protect him from his abusive drunk, father.

This book is dark and sad, but don't worry, it isn't all doom and gloom. Caleb's character brings a bright shining light to it. These two characters balanced the story out nicely, so you didn't spend the whole book, frustrated, sad and angry. Caleb makes you want to smile and laugh. The secondary characters, Calebs family, especially his mother had me in stitches. She was hilarious!! Caleb and Michael have a great chemistry.

This book really touched me in a way not many do. Ashley yanked my heart out and ripped it up, then he put it back together for me. The story flows well and is well written. As I said I wasn’t sure I wanted to read this book, but it turned out to be the best by far in the series. I am looking forward to reading more by Ashley in the future!!

Saving Michael by Ashley John
Review by Andrea Goodell

WOW! 5 rainbows!
This is the third book in the Surf Bay series, and its Michael and Caleb story. Michael for the last couple of years has been on a self destructive path, drinking too much, gambling and as we find out did the ultimate sin and beat up his boyfriend. He was arrested, even though he is a deputy himself. And for the last several months he’s been either living on his dad’s couch or sleeping in his car. He’s father being a complete enabler, allowing and even joins his son in the drinking and then getting dressed and heading to the office, which happens to be the sheriff station. Caleb is the local Vet, sweet naïve and completely adorable. Still lives at home with his mother, father and sister. Even at 26! He takes one look at Michael, and wants to save him just like he saves all his animal patients! He’s the only one.
The book starts out with a clip from the past, very important clip. Fast forward to present day and Michael is a complete mess. Porter and Kane are happy and Michael is slowly drinking himself to death, which is where he thinks he belongs. One night the vet clinic catches fire and Caleb’s sister runs into Michael who happens to be leaving the bar completely wasted. But Michael figures out a way not only to sober up long enough to save Caleb but help rescue the animals. This act alone makes Caleb fall a little in love with Michael and he starts falling Michael around like a little puppy. Making him want to do better be, better. But is it too little too late?
I have to tell you, after book two, Michael was so far down my list of favorite characters I didn’t think he would ever see the light of day! And I wasn’t sure how this author, as brilliant as he is could pull it off. But WOW! By the end of this book I was crying, not only for Michael and his happiness but for Caleb and the rest. Unlike the other two books, this one starts with a true villain and someone that is so misunderstood no one cares or wants to try. If anyone deserves a HEA it’s Michael, and I would have been the last person to say that after book 2! Just like book 1 and 2 it can be read as stand alone, but more enjoyable if read in order.

I received this book for an honest review.
All I can say is that my review won't be as well written as the book was.
Michael was first introduced to us in 'Full Circle' where he was a violent drunk who nearly destroyed Porter.
So you would think that you wouldn't go from disliking him with a passion to really liking the guy!!!
If you think that then you are WRONG!!
Michael is written so that you have to be heartless to not end up loving him.
Through the book you are gently told the story of Michael and why he has been acting the way he does. And you see his transformation.
This wouldn't have happened without Caleb!!
What can I say about Caleb.....
I would like to find one to have as my own ( no sharing)!!
He has such a big heart and wants to help fix everything. He sets out to help Michael.
The chemistry is a slow burn in this book. Not so much instant attraction but a slow realisation.
I love Caleb's family and the whole dynamic between them.
I honestly thought Porter would have had a bigger part in this book and might have actually helped Michael but I think the amount we saw was just the right fit for the book.
The emotion was off the chart with this book.
I loved it!! 5 stars all the way!!! I want the next instalment of surf bay now!!!!!

Ashley John's writing keeps getting better and better. I went from hating Michael in the Full Circle, to having a mild (very mild) sympathy by the end of that book, to that sympathy growing to the point of bringing me to tears just in the prologue of this book. This book shows that with some people there is a hidden reason why they are the way they are. And that is exactly the case with Michael. His past played a huge role in how he ended up being the drunken, mean but depressed person he is now, but the beautiful thing is that people can change. That's where Caleb played a huge role. Michael's story is very well written and I highly recommend it. It can be read by itself, but I suggest reading the other 2 books in the Surf Bay series first. They do help introduce you to other characters mentioned in this book, but mostly they are just enjoyable to read! Looking forward to his next book! :)

I've never been one to shy away from the fact that I need most (with very rare exceptions) of the M/M books I read to be at least 51% romance. There was romance here, but it was a very, very small portion of the book. The angst took up the majority and while that is not necessarily a bad thing, it wasn't what I was looking or hoping for in this particular book. Considering the fact I had not read the first two books in the Surf Bay series, I didn't have as much of a vested interest in these characters as others might.

If you love the high angst and mental pain and love a truly glorious HEA and can wait for the romantic payoff until the bitter end, you will absolutely enjoy this one. If you need more of a balance, you might want to read the other books in the series first or chose another M/M romance title.

I was lucky enough to get an ARC on this for a honest review, Thanks again Ashley :)
WOW... I just loved this! I was floored & went through so many emotions. Crying, laughing a lot @Caleb's Mom, heart up on my throat moments or stopping or bursting, you get it ;) I very disliked Michael in Book 2 but he definitely redeemed himself in this one & I really started to like him, especially when I found out why he was the way he was, I felt really bad for him & my heart broke, but I had my dislike moments when he was being an ass! Haha. Some of the words Michael says to Caleb.. Oh my heart :). <3 There's so much more I want to say but I would spoil it for sure!! I certainly love The Surf Bay Series & so can't wait for the next one! They keep getting better & better! A TBR 100%

The Deputy that I hated in the previous book, that I was sure could not be redeemed, in this installment of the Surf Bay series, Michael was not only redeemed and forgiven but you just couldn't help falling for him yourself. Ashley John did an amazing job taking a character I loved to hate and making me see not just the villain but, the sweet, sad man underneath it all. There were no excuses for the past and it isn't something that you forget about and all of sudden just look over, but he makes amends, and you will love him for it. The Surf Bay series from the 1st book through this 3rd one just keeps getting better and better...can't wait to see what will happen next!

5 Stars! Ashley has done it again!

Everytime I read a Surf Bay novel i think surely it cant get any better, and then I get a copy of the next one and it really does.

Michael - Well what can I say about him, I knew when I was reading and seeing him in Full Circle there was more to his story then we knew. I also knew that He'd break my heart! I was right.

No one will be prepared for this!

Its a story of self discovery and self acceptance. Overcoming your own negative'ness to make the future better.

Ashley John will do all of this and more.... You'll be begging for more, well you only have untill Spring 2015 to wait!

wow once again, I'm in love with Surf Bay and all its residents. Saving michael was an amazing story of redemption and love. I didn't care for Michael in book 2, but here in book 3 I fell for him, head over heels fell for him. his story is both heartbreaking and beautiful. Caleb was so sweet and pure, watching him fight for Michael and bring him back from such a horrid existence made my heart happy. Their journey is one that I will revisit over and over again. amazing job Ashley, this one is my favorite by far.♡

Saving Michael is Book # 3 in the Surf Bay Series by Author Ashley John
This is Deputy Sheriff Michael's story.
We meet Michael in book # 2 Full Circle, I totally hated him, Michael had hit rock bottom and he pushed his fiancé away with his drunken and violent behavior.
While trading this book I started to wonder Why? did he behave the way he did so as U continue reading you will start to piece together little bits and pieces as to why his behavior was so disgusting.
Now we meet Caleb the local vet in Surf Bay who is a young and always happy kinda guy.
Chance brings these two together when a devastating fire destroys the vet building.
Caleb is determined to figure out why Michael is the way he is and he will not stop until he puts the pieces to the puzzle together and saves him.
Michael is so determined to avoid and push Caleb away but the more he tries the stronger Caleb attaches himself to him.
Im not going into anything more in this story because everyone should experience the journey these two men face, to me it's a story about true Redemption and proves that no matter how devastating your life seems there is always help out there if you seek.
You will experience Violence, drunkenness, and abuse in this book but this Author so brilliantly wrote this story that you actually feel like you are right there with these characters. I highly recommend this Five Star read to everyone I feel it's a life's lesson.
I will say this: I absolutely fell in love with Michael reading this book.
These books can be read as standalones but I strongly suggest reading them in order so you get to appreciate all the side characters in here which are in the first books.

When you start to read Saving Michael you can experiment the shift and changes in the way Ashley John’s stories are written.
The maturity of his words and the writing style are something that will keep you captivated since the first page of this book.
In Saving Michael, you finally get the real story behind Michael’s behavior and drinking problem but also get to see that while you hated Michael so much, redemption is possible.
Redemption that can come in different manners, shapes or forms. In this case it came in the formed of Caleb, the town’s vet and all around good guy. A supportive family, that I may say, imparted the much needed laugh in the middle of the storm.
Michael’s alcoholism is a serious subject matter and the demons behind it were real, that will never justify what Michael did but certainly puts the situation into perspective.
Alcoholism is a serious disease and until the person doesn’t want to be help, it will plaque them constantly and even after being sober, it is a lifetime commitment to remain sober.
I think Ashley John touched the subject in an admirable way, being real but at the same time respectful of the situation. Given Michael a voice to explain his reality.
Caleb, sweetheart of a man … saved Michael and at the same time saved himself because He found a purpose to continue fighting for what deep inside he thought it was right and to move past the betrayal of his ex-boyfriend.
In this book, I must say my favorite of the series so far, Ashley John should be proud of himself and his writing abilities.
Job well done !

I put off reading this book for ages because I don't want to read Michael's story.
I don't want to like Michael. I don't want to understand why he behaved as he did. I don't want to respect him.
I was quite happy disliking him.

Then I started reading it.....
I'd only got through the prologue and I was already feeling sorry for him...

After that it gets a little trickier.
Michael is not a particularly nice man. Actually scrap that, he's horrible. He's rude and dirty and unkempt. He's a slob.
Caleb on the other hand is sweet and caring and frankly, far too immature for a 26 year old. Initially It's very difficult to understand what Caleb sees in Michael and why he continues to pursue him.
But...I believe people can change. I believe people deserve a second chance. I believe in forgiveness.
What Michael went through, isn't an excuse for his behaviour, but I think it goes some way to explaining it. The important thing is that he recognises what he did was wrong and that he wants to make amends for it.

I had some problems with the story, it tends to jump around a bit making it sometimes tricky to follow ad Michael's 'recovery' happened far too quickly to ever be believable and the ending is just a little too convenient. However, Ashley's writing has grown so much. His style has matured, it's easy to read and it grips you and draws you in.
He writes love as it really is.
Hard work. Difficult. Imperfect.

Outstanding turn around

I first read Ashley John's George and Stanley series. I have to admit, I was unimpressed, but something was there in the writing style that intrigued me and so, I stuck it out and read those books. They were just meh for me.
Then there was the first Surf Bay book. BAM. THIS is what I was looking for and what I caught a glimpse of in the first books. Ashley John is now an auto buy for.

I am a sucker for the bad guy that fights and claws their way to redemption. Michael was completely broken. Really broken and I was not sure how he could be redeemed and what in his past broke him and without spoiling anything, wow. What he went through was utterly heartbreaking and not that condone what happened in the previous book at all, I feel for the guy.

This was one heck of a redemption and I can't wait until March when the next book is released.

This story is about redemption. Michael did it well, with some help from the very very optimistic Caleb. Oh! Caleb how I admire you, you saw in Michael what no one else wanted to see; a man asking for help. Michael received nothing but judgement, he earned a lot of it with his behavior towards Porter, he deserved it too, however no one questions why he acted in that manner. It was a scream for help that was ignored by everyone! Poor Michael he was drowning, and no one would save him, not until he saved Caleb. In returned Caleb saved him back. That's true love, never giving up on the person you love, even when they do.

I must say going into book 3 after what Michael did to Porter in book two and everything in general I did not think I was going to like Saving Michael. The author did a fabulous job!!! I was just like the rest of Surf Bay. Judging Michael based on actions. Caleb what can I say about him but LOVE him the patience and understanding to bring back Michael was so heartfelt. I am so happy with the scene in end with Porter and all of Surf Bay at the end a pleasant surprise. I hope there is another book that shows all three couple down the road a bit!!

I enjoyed this book as much as I did the first two Surf Bay books. Michael had hit rock bottom - and was constantly drunk and feeling worthless. Saving Caleb from his burning business was the start of his redemption. Caleb becomes his anchor and helps him find his way. Love the romance of Michael (a big bad bear) being rescued by the smaller Caleb! Good job Ashley!

I admit, I came into this book thinking there was no way I'd ever truly be able to like Michael after what happened in book two. I expected to actively hate him. That lasted all of half of the first page and I spent the rest of the book rooting for him just as hard as Caleb did!

I follow the writer's process of Ashley John for some time. The first book was written by a novice. Cute story, talented, but I didn´t expect a bestseller. With each following book, he surprised me again, because it was better than the previous one. Michael was one of the characters that I did not really want to "see again". Nevertheless, the curiosity triumphed and I bought Saving Michael. Ashley John convinced me in just a few pages to give Michael a chance. And the story was getting better. I am impressed by the Bay Surf Series and amazed at how quickly Ashley John talent increased and I´m curious to read his next book. (Rated on Amazon.de with 5 Stars as well)

Am I really the only person who does not see the problems in this book? I'm really trying not to be harsh here, but I'm frustrated. The book that should be taking a character that is hated in the previous story, and having them redeem themselves, making the readers understand where his pain was coming from, failed. Why? If you really want to know, you know what to do.

You know what is sad here? There really is a story. A sad one. A story where we find out why Michael is a mess, and what he decides to do about it. A story where Caleb sees through all the booze and finds the real Michael underneath. A story that could have been so amazing if only someone would have paid attention to the details.

I have to say, I found this series somewhat enjoyable, but problematic. This one was the hardest for me, and I felt it was actually a fairly reckless premise. Michael is a SEVERE alcoholic, and to hear that someone else in this situation could be "saved" by another person is not only a false idea, but it is a dangerous one to share. Caleb actually says that he is going to save Michael from Michael. You know who can save Michael? Rehab.

Not only that, but Michael, who drinks MOUTHWASH to get the alcohol he needs to function, never medically detoxes. Caleb helps him through it. If he is drinking MOUTHWASH, and drinking alcohol just to function, he will die without it unless he was supervised. As a vet, or a living creature with any sense, that was reckless of Caleb.

Also, Michael constantly drunk driving and abusing his power? Not ok. Caleb actually carving slurs and misogynist and homophobic words into the car of an ex? For no really good reason? Not OK. Truly, I found them unlikable and untrustworthy.

Michael needed detox and therapy, and to make this seem like an issue that love could heal? No. He was abusive and dangerous, and love doesn't just fix that. I'd hate for someone to read this and romanticize these all too real issues. Several recent books have dealt with these issues in sensitive and realistic ways, and I felt it was too bad that this one did not.

I find the secondary characters interesting, and I was vaguely interested in the setting, but I was actually appalled at parts of this book, and frankly, surprised that more people were not.

I think this book could have been much better with some attention to the message it sent. The writing is interesting and the author is clearly talented, but with talent comes responsibility, and I didn't see that here. I was concerned in book 1 with the romanticizing of stalking and harassing behavior, but this book went way too far.
