Viktor Mason is a mercenary trying to carve out an existence amidst a grim near future of interplanetary space travel where asteroids are mined for their minerals, bounty hunters and hired guns run amok and the mega-corporations rule supreme.

While life for Viktor and his small band of mercenary misfits has the appearance of freedom, each lives under the dark shadow of debt and, worse, have knowledge of a secret that could get them killed.

Everything changes when they are approached by a mysterious benefactor offering to clean up their debt and protection...if they run a job. The job seems simple enough: infiltrate an asteroid based outpost gone silent and figure out what went wrong.

But it's never that easy, and something evil lurks in the dead depths of space, waiting...

I'm just a writer from the Midwest. I typical like action/horror, usually against a sci-fi backdrop.

This is my third read by Lusher and I have to say I'm sort of impressed. None of them have been great per se, but Lusher manages to maintain a consistent level of quality throughout genres. This time it's scifi or scifi horror mash up of sorts. The self described ragtag team of mercenaries (reminded me of one of my favorite scifi movies Serenity) gets an offer they can't refuse and end up somewhere they can't leave up against something they can't overcome. This novella has a sort of episodic unfinished part 1 of something vibe to it because it is. In an afterword Lusher states that it is intended to be a part of a larger universe. I'm not sure if I'd commit to an entire universe of scifi, it really isn't my genre of preference, but on a once in a blue moon basis it might be interesting. And Lusher might very well impress...or at least not disappoint which can be half the battle. The ending here is one of those where you sort of know what happens next...the main question is what happened prior to. Question Lusher might one day answer. Quick pretty entertaining read.
