Ruby Walsh has spent two years hiding behind merger agreements and corporate acquisitions, burying her grief in work since her wife's death. Her mansion in The Ridges, Las Vegas's most exclusive enclave, has become an empty shrine to a life no longer lived, but the night she confronts her neighbor about the music coming from her property, everything changes.
Athena Stavros runs the Olympus, the Strip's most glamorous casino, but her true domain lies hidden beneath her home—a secret world of indulgence accessible only to a select circle of powerful women. Behind her white armor—tailored suits and wide-brimmed hats—stands a woman who orchestrates desire but never loses control... until she meets Ruby.
In the shadows of Sin City two women accustomed to writing the rules become caught in a dangerous dance of their own making. When power shifts, the greatest risk might not be falling into desire, but daring to believe in something more.

It’s been awhile since I’ve read a Lise Gold book, I’ve missed her smooth writing style. I immediately got into the flow and setting of this book. The setting in Las Vegas felt real, the scenes in the desert as well. I liked Ruby and could empathize with her loss and daily drudgery. Athena‘s character was a mystery to me for most of the book. I couldn’t understand her until the 75% mark. She was a strong, powerful and demanding person on the outside but soft and affectionate privately.
The private sex club was an interesting concept. I doubt that in real life people could keep it private. Someone would leek to a friend or the press.
I did buy into the emotions and feels between Ruby and Athena..
Really enjoyed this audiobook - the second resulting from Gold’s trip to Las Vegas, the first being Red Rock Ranch.
When Gold shares the writing credit with alter ego Madeleine Taylor, that means we get extra spice. And we definitely have that here! Oh my. Be prepared to do some squirming with this one.
Gold always does a beautiful job of featuring the locations of her stories, making the reader feel like they’ve been there. This book was no exception. Not only do we get Vegas, but also Greece.
She was also very excited about the new narrator for this release, Charlotte Claremont, who did a terrific job. I’m so glad Gold is starting to change it up narrator-wise. I’d love to hear more from this performer!
A pure pleasure to read! Two strong, successful yet broken women (Ruby and Athena) with sky high walls built around them. Neither are ready for a relationship and the prospect of love is terrifying. But Athena has started an exclusive, invitation only club for elite queer women to shake off the pressures of the world and lose themselves in the freedom of pleasure, and it is next door to Ruby. Will the club break down their walls?
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and couldn’t put it down. The characters were believable despite the unimaginable wealth and the dynamic between them was pure magic. Well written and I highly recommend it!
A love letter to anyone experiencing grief and starting over
This is only my second book by Lise Gold. The first was a Christmas novella that I thoroughly enjoyed, but this book.. This one was fantastic. It was everything I want in romance book! I fell in love with Athena and Ruby, and their families. I was in a bit of a reading slump before I read this book and just like that, I’m out of it. I can’t wait to read more from either of these authors!
This book came to me at exactly the right time. I didn’t expect it to resonate so deeply, but it quickly became one of my favorite reads. The characters are beautifully written — layered, vulnerable, and completely captivating. Their emotional journey felt honest and raw, and I found myself fully invested in their story. Athena, in particular, stood out in a quiet but unforgettable way. There’s an undeniable intensity to her presence that stayed with me long after I finished reading. The relationships felt real — not just the central one, but the side characters too. Every scene added something, whether it was softness, tension, or something a little more charged. The romantic and intimate moments were handled with care and depth, striking a balance between heat and heart. It’s rare for a book to pull me in so completely, but this one did. I’ll be thinking about it for a long time.
I will always give Lise/Madeline 5 stars for the rich portrayal of characters, landscapes, and being able to visualize her stories like a film running through my head, such as the Greek food and Santorini in this novel. I especially loved Ruby and Athena's characters in their steamy scenes! Awesome novel!
I wasn’t sure what to expect going into this one, but was pleasantly surprised! A great read with so many facets that I love when reading sapphic romance. There was emotional turmoil from previous loss, control and dominance, and tender moments full of emotion. I can’t wait to read the next one!
Beautiful, spicy, emotional and absolutely wonderful. A pure pleasure to read! Two strong, successful yet broken women (Ruby and Athena) with sky high walls built around them. This book was emotionally captivating. As a widow still in a very relatable space of grief.
Oh, what a delightful read, indeed!! It's definitely my favourite one of Lise Gold's many books I've read, thusfar! Not only because of just how Ruby's journey of profound grief and loss that deeply resonates ever-so viscerally, but the overall spirited-to-mythical feel of this otherwise adoringly empathic love story that really takes the biscuit for me. It just gives this air of abundance - in love, joy, peace, tranquility, hope but the most divine of all, grace. Blessing grace. Gold's heartfelt story about how a deep-seated love once lost can be found or more accurately, rediscovered in another bereaved person that vibrates at the same soul level.
I must mention the other MC, Athena. What a devilishly suave character who, despite suffering from her own big loss but in secret, no less…, unwittingly finds herself becoming the catalyst for Ruby’s healing and transformation, whilst metamorphosizes herself in her own healing journey, too! To me, they’re definitely kindred spirits. Their energy vibrates with such harmony whenever they’re together. And when they’re not, the energy stays in the form of yearning. I somehow feel that level of vibration through Gold’s multi-dimensional narrative that’s so grounded and relatable.
And...in the midst of all the sensuality and intrigue that the story exudes, it's also hilarious! Gold does have a witty sense of humour, which she nonchalantly spills through her characters. This time, it's the funny moment, an unintended one, to say the least, which makes the situational comedy even more ticklish, that befalls the normally cool, suave, calm and collected Athena when her mother and sister drop in on her at a moment's notice!! Oh, the chuckles! Priceless!!
The chemistry between the 2 MCs? Whoa, from the moment Ruby lays eyes on Athena and calls out to her from her bedroom window one night about the music - simply oozes with intrigue and sensuality, not to mention, the slow-burning tease of their physical intimacy with several near-misses that leaves you craving for that ultimate release! Ah, Gold is brilliant in writing steamy buildups. Oh, the yearning, the stolen glances, touches, the passion! Utterly insatiable! Totally intoxicating! You'll love it! There's a scene that's so erotic yet hilarious at the same time, written so wickedly perfect, that at the end of it, you can't help but heave a sigh of relief!! Phew!! Poor Athena! Ha!
In addition, Gold somehow manages to create this unspoken attraction between her MCs in her narrative! Ruby and Athena's attraction is addictive. Makes you chase after that energy as you scroll through the pages! I LOVE it! It's always the unspoken, the non-verbal nuances that some authors can conjure up when crafting their story narrative that seduce the reader into wanting more. Gold is one of them.
Gold really has her way with describing the emotional nuances, the unspoken feelings, the internal monologue that truly shape the essence of her characters, namely Ruby and Athena in this romance with an homage to Greek mythology by way of using some of the Olympians' names for her characters i.e. Athena, Olympus, Zeus, Persephone, Sophia, Demetria, amongst others, not to mention, using some Greek mythological rituals, beliefs, to give the story a whiff of mythicism! Well, I feel it!
I absolutely adore Ruby and Athena, equally, which is not common in my reading experience. Gold gives both characters equal exposure and character development and growth when telling the whole story from both POVs, without bias. To me, that's the best way as it enables the reader to come to their own conclusion about the MCs, rather than being influenced by the author's own opinions or preferences.
One of my favourite quotes in the book that effectively describes the crux of this beautifully sensual love story between Athena and Ruby, is Demetria’s insightful observation to Athena: "Two people who understand brokenness might actually fit together better than those who've never been shattered. Like those Japanese bowls repaired with gold -- the cracks become part of the beauty."
"Grief doesn't follow a timeline. Some days it feels fresh. Other days, one can be convinced that they're moving on." - Ruby's stream of consciousness toward the end.
"Each relationship we have changes us, becomes part of our foundation. Our lost love will always be part of ours, regardless of who else enters our life. Sometimes the most profound relationships don't mirror each other - they complement each other. One teaches you tenderness, another teaches you passion. Both are equally valid, and both can be built on love."
Oh, Ruby... I feel you. What a cathartic journey of healing for her. A phoenix rising. Rising from the ashes of death to a promise of a second life. As she reflects, "I've found something I thought was lost forever -- not just love, but possibility. The chance to build something new from the ashes of what came before. Not to replace what was lost, but to honor it by living fully again." Profoundly beautiful.
And what could be more heartwarming to end this endearing love story than to have Ruby's words of reflection, which truly resonates within the healing soul, as the bookend to Ruby and Athena's story, eh?
"Perhaps that's what healing looks like in the end -- not the absence of scars, but the creation of new patterns around them. This is where we begin again. Not at the start, but somewhere in the middle of our stories, carrying all that came before, yet open to what lies ahead." ~ No truer words said.
Honestly, I've always enjoyed Gold's richly compelling writing but this story, for reasons that I'm well aware of, simply tugs at my heartstrings that leaves me with all the feels throughout the entire story. The emotionally cathartic effect that this incredibly crafted story has ignited in me reminds me of another surprising book whose “messages” I never saw coming but perfectly timed - J.A. Armstrong’s devastatingly beautiful “Lovefest.”
Lise Gold and Madeleine Taylor did it again! Did I mention that I adore its title, “Hedonism?” It perfectly describes the intent of this story. A state of mind, meant to be introduced by her catalyst, Athena, that serves as a life-changing paradigm shift to Ruby’s journey from grief-stricken loss and hopelessness to the beginning of a second life filled with love, possibilities and a future with her kindred spirit.
This book is definitely a MUST-READ. It’s an all-around heartfelt love story that stems from a place of grief and loss told ever-so sensually with deep, emotional resonance. For me, it also has this air of mythical intrigue what with Athena being Greek whose family’s from Athens, her place of work called Olympus, the significance of Zeus, Athena’s experience with grief and loss, the fact that she never was ever entangled with anyone romantically (for Gold’s Athena, it’s because of her secret which lent to her absence/lack thereof in the love department!) which obviously changes in this story!
Then there are Greek symbolisms, and of course the abundant use of some famous names in Greek mythology. Ruby could be short for Eurybia, who was a goddess in the mythology. Whether it’s Gold’s intent to draw parallels between Greek mythology and Hedonism or simply pay homage to it, to me, it’s such a refreshing narrative style. I love it!! Anyway, if you haven’t read it yet, READ “Hedonism” NOW!!
A Sexy, Confident Romance That Isn’t Afraid to Push the Line
Hedonism by Lise Gold/Madeleine Taylor surprised me in the best way. At its core, it’s a heartfelt sapphic romance: a grieving widow trying to rebuild her life and the enigmatic neighbour she meets , a casino boss who also runs an exclusive, private club for powerful queer women out of her home. The setup is intriguing, but it’s the execution that really shines.
What impressed me most was Gold’s handling of the BDSM elements. Writing kink well is not easy, and it’s often where books stumble , but here, it’s done with intention, clarity, and respect. Everything is deeply consensual, rooted in trust, and serves the emotional arc of the relationship rather than overshadowing it. Both women gain something essential from the dynamic, and that depth adds weight to their connection.
The story also weaves in rich family dynamics, including the challenges of coming out to a very traditional Greek family. These moments ground the book and add heart, reminding the reader that power and vulnerability can coexist both inside and outside the bedroom.
Overall, Hedonism is well written, engaging, and unexpectedly moving. A confident, sexy, emotionally layered read that’s absolutely worth picking up.
Loved it so much. Some of the phrasing is beautiful. My favorite by the author so far. Would have been a 5 star but needed one more run through the proofreader.
**Going with a solid 5 for a reread with the audiobook. The narrator did a great job and I didn't get caught up on any proofreader issues. :-)
I wanted to kick off my reading challenge for 2026 with Hedonism by Lise Gold (Madeleine Taylor).
Ruby Walsh, a grieving widow, has thrown herself into her high-powered corporate job for two years to cope with the loss of her wife. Living in a luxurious but lonely mansion in Las Vegas's elite neighborhood, her isolation is disrupted one night when she complains about loud music coming from her neighbor's property.
That neighbor is Athena Stavros, the confident owner of a glamorous casino on the Strip. Beneath her home lies a hidden, exclusive world of pleasure reserved for a select group of powerful women. When Ruby crosses paths with Athena, she's drawn into this secretive realm of indulgence, sparking an intense connection that challenges her emotional walls. As they explore desire and vulnerability together, both women confront past grief and fears, blending hedonistic passion with deeper romance. The tagline "Control is an illusion" captures the story's themes of letting go and finding unexpected healing.
It was a sweet romance, enjoyable to read. A bit of angst, a dabble of bdsm, a bit of spice, a Greek mother, coming out angst, and a big kitty named Zeus.
Although this book was about a mergers and acquisitions attorney, Ruby Walsh, and the owner of the Olympus casino, Athena Stravros, on Las Vegas' famous strip, it was very relatable read. Both women were throwing themselves into work and not establishing any romantic relationships due to losses that both had suffered. Ruby's wife had died in an accident two years earlier and Athena lost her girlfriend years prior. In addition, Athena was not out to her colleagues and more importantly to her traditional Greek Orthodox family back in Santorini.
I really enjoyed the slow build of the relationship between Ruby and Athena after Ruby spots odd ongoings at Athena's house. They spent some time getting to know each other as friends prior to any physical involvement. The addition of Athena's mother, Sophia, and sister, Demetria, via an impromptu visit to Las Vegas was hilarious and added dimension and backstory to Athena's character. The house switch situation was bizarre and add some comedy to the storyline.
Although this was a book about hedonism, the story overall felt more romantic once the two lead characters overcame past grief and tackled some of their fears.
I have now read or listened to a good selection of Lise Gold’s book, always a guarantee that I will love the book when approaching a new title. It is a given that a loving story and no stupid 3rd act breakup. If the other pen name the author is using is showing up, Madeleine Taylor, as in this case there is also a guarantee that the story is extra steamy.
This read was such a delight, a wonderful combination of recovering from grief, find love again, lots of steam and as an extra bonus a lot of fun scenes. Athena’s very special grumpy cat Zeus is beyond amazing, I want a cat just like that after reading this book. The whole house swap story when Athena’s mom and sister are visiting her in Las Vegas is fantastic to read about, that extra twist was giving this story the extra layer since Athena is not out to her family. I even laughed out loud during the extremely awkward encountering when Athena comes home at night still wearing a strap-on after a hot tryst with Ruby.
So in conclusion, this book is another must read Lise Gold story, I highly recommend it.
Ruby, Las Vegas lawyer, finds herself wondering about her neighbor, Athena, who apparently hold loud parties five nights a week. She knows Athena runs a casino, and suspects she's running some illegal gambling.
Athena is intrigued by Ruby, who's a beauty but apparently only works, eats and sleeps. The security system at Athena's home let's her watch the rear of Ruby's place, and she wonders why she's like this.
Eventually Ruby learns that Athena is running a private sex club for queer women out of her basement. AND she invites Ruby to join. Things go along well until Athena's MOM declares she's coming to visit, sister in tow.
As there's no way to hide the club, Athena suggests she swap houses with Ruby...
(While the house swap was funny, I did have a OK, really? reaction. You can't tell me Athena couldn't have contacted everyone and tell them not to come out, especially as she organizes transport too.)
Anyway... good wrap up, i liked the characters and story, other than the one bit.
I believe this to be the 8th book by Lise Gold, that I have either read, listened to, and in some cases both. 💕 In a sense, I have traveled around the world with her, and thankfully, enjoyed every moment. ☺️ The title of this novel I find to be a little misleading. 🤔 One would guess, that it might be a well written erotic novel (which it can be at times) however it is so much more than that, and it would be selling it short to consider it as such. I adore Greece, and its culture and geography. While reading, I was allowed to conjure up its sights and its traditional people, both wealthy and common. I felt like I was being guided both socially and geographically, facilitated by the romantic couple who allowed me to accompany them as they healed their grief, explored their passions and competed against centuries old traditions. Thank you for taking me on this emotional and geographical journey. Libra❤️ Ps: I had a hunch that Zara was introduced to us for more than literary wall paper 🤩
3.5 This was a lovely story overall. The emotion and chemistry between the characters hit hard right from the start — the grief felt raw, the attraction was palpable, and the characters were well-developed. The steam was steamy.
But around the 75% mark, my engagement started to wane. By then, the MCs were already together, and all that remained was a no-angst stretch capped with a 40-year-old coming out storyline. The momentum slowed, and with the tension gone, it almost felt like I was reading a different book. While it remained sweet and romantic, the spark that had pulled me in so fiercely at the beginning had faded.
Still, I had a lovely time reading it. Even if the last act lost some of its fire, the journey there was heartfelt, passionate, and worth taking.
The plot was really good although the writing, I felt, was a bit rushed. The dialogues sounded like narrations at some point.
Still a solid read, I enjoyed it, I just hoped it was less ‘robotic’—at least to me that’s what it felt like at times. The resolutions were a bit straightforward and didn’t have any intense climaxes. Took me a few days to finish.
Although the weaving of grief in this story was one of the best, dare I say next to Our Wives in The Sea. I really felt how stuck Ruby was. But then it came to Athena and she just blurted out Elena in a day which seemed off-character for her as she was so guarded.
The BDSM scenes were okay-ish? Most of their sexual encounters were in the playroom and I wish it was a bit more intimate when they became serious.

Another book from Lise that I couldn't put down, I found myself losing sleep just to learn more about Ruby and Athena's background.
I absolutely loved how Ruby's grief was described throughout the book. I tend to enjoy a bit more stories that have this particular subject, but the most common is about loss of a parent/sibling. Reading it about the loss of her wife made me cry more than I thought it would. That speaks volumes to how well written it is.
The spice was on point, the club brought more entertainment to the story. Although at the beginning it took me a while to understand what was what and who was who (felt like a lot of names and details all at once), once I could picture everything, the book was nothing short of amazing!
Ruby has been widowed for two years and still can't let her wife's things go. She has become a workaholic Attorney with little to eat and sleep. Athena runs the Olympus casino during the day but at night she has a club just for high profile queer women. Both MC are wonderful written their struggles of letting go and trying to move forward. A friendship that starts tearing down the walls that have been built. Add in the families one with moral support and the other set in the old ways, we see the coming out and how things can be beautiful. A wonderful story to read with all the emotions.
This was a charming read that began with a lot of grief and evolved into something more warm and healing. I enjoyed the characterizations, the exploration of a different culture (even though Athena's career revolved so heavily around greek mythology that it almost felt a little performative?)
I felt like it kind of lost its track towards the end and I would have preferred a little more spice from a book involving an underground kink club. If you're looking for hot and exotic BDSM scenes, you'll probably be a little disappointed.
Some of my favorite books are not just well-written and fun to read, but have the thing going with two damaged characters who make each other better, or heal each other, over the course of the book. And it turns out, this certainly qualifies!
I wasn’t quite sure what to make of it going in; somehow the title and description had me thinking it wasn’t going to be a real deep story. I’ve read a few about the untouchable club owner falling for one of her patrons, I guess, and they can be fun without having much “there” there. But, happily, this was so much more than that! It turns out both Ruby and Athena have depth, and my heart broke for each of them when their backstories were eventually revealed. It made the entire setup so much more plausible, and while there were club scenes, I felt like the story revolved around the characters, not the club. Not to mention Demetria, and the unforgettable Zeus…
There were other parts of the story I thought were amazing too, though. The bit with “how about we just swap?” was unbelievable — I just, I was shocked. It was such a creative and wonderful plot point, especially the bit with Demetria! And though it wasn’t really a major focus, the casino was super-fun with all the Greek elements. How everything played out with Athena’s mom… I dunno, there just kept being more bits to love.
All in all, this exceeded expectations in pretty much every way, and I’ve been impressed by Lise Gold before so that’s saying something!
Do I read everything this author writes? Yes Did this book leapfrog others in my TBR? Yes Will I be reading it again? Also Yes!
Such a great story yet again by this super talented author. Pretty much hooked from the first chapter. Absolutely adore the characters, they just fit together perfectly. The side characters are also fun. Can’t wait for Zara’s story…
I always like Lise Gold's books. The short chapters, short sentences, alternating pov's between the two mains, and of course the great characters. There is emotion but also sexyness. When she writes as Madeleine Taylor it usually gets extra hot and spicy. That was not really the case in this latest book of her. Exept for two bsdm scenes maybe. In my opinion it was more Lise Gold than Madeleine Taylor. That didn't bother me though. I liked it just as well. 4.5⭐️
Oh my God... This stuff was beautiful. I was hesitant but my God.. The way Ruby and Athena loved one another, so soft and tender and understanding like holy mother of all good things... let this fucking love find me; I would melt and become one with the floor.
Though, there seems to be an abundance of grief books recently. I hope every author out there is okay. The world is weird.
Ps: I am a little not sure about Nova's book, but we shall see.
This book is amazing! I only regret leaving it on my TBR list for so long!
I found it to be deeply moving and emotional. The MCs are dealing with grief and loss, while slowly introducing healing, hope and happiness. Set against a Las Vegas backdrop, with plenty of money and lots of power dynamics at play, this book absolutely nails both emotion and spice!
4 stars. For a book titled Hedonism, there's not a lot of hedonism, mostly just two women moving past their trauma on rails. I wish the kink culture would be explored more deeply rather than just used as a backdrop. It almost feels like a set dressing to tickle the imagination of normies, and it never goes too far off the beaten path.
Still, the read is entertaining and engaging enough. Gold's writing is good like usual.
So grateful for this book. Recent ly I've started and not finished too many books, yet finally this one the held my interest all the way to the end! Beautiful, healing, spicy! Can't wait for Zara's Book next! Thank you Lise /Madeleine for а wonderful escape!!
Brilliantly written book. Unique story. Loved both MC's. Fell for the stoic Athena and her secret club under the house. Hilarious moments when Athena's Mum and Sis decide to visit and insist staying at her house and not at the fancy Vegas resort she owns. The attraction growing between the two MC's was hot. Nice reading a novel with adult women behaving like adults.
