I'm happy to be back in Copper County.
May Archer's books are always fun and lighthearted, the best way to enjoy a romance book.
This book definitely hit the spot on several things that I love: small town romance, forced proximity, fighting obvious feelings, a cute dog, and great secondary characters.
Delaney and Brewer's story starts chaotically and somewhat horribly. I didn't really like how their stubbornness clashed at the beginning because they were very rude to each other. Even though it stems from their repressed attraction toneach other, it was a tad too intense for me. Delaney, with being his uncompromising and stubborn self and Brewer with his sneak gaslighting ways, did not match. To a point where it hurt me to read their interactions. It's not cool.
Fortunately, the initial bad feelings are quickly snuffled after Brewer is forced to move in with Delaney when Delaney accidentally burns down his camper. It's not ideal that a literal disastrous tragedy is needed to make them see each other somewhat differently, but at least it happened. From that point, the story really takes a 180° and both Delaney and Brewer start to show their real, caring selves.
I think the title is spot on with this one. Delaney feels like an outsider in the small town of Copper County. He's a big city journalist, not a homemaker. Yet, here he is renovating a house and living two hours from the nearest airport. I liked his character development. Both in regards to himself and discovering how his needs have changed and in regards to his relationships that grow deeper as he settles in the small town.
Brewer is similarly a misfit, but it's more self-inflicted. He's been hurt before, so he keeps everyone at arms length, his cousin, his friends, Delaney. But even though it's not his intention, his big heart, talent, and loyalty are obvious, so he inadvertently becomes an integral part of the little town.
Their cohabitation while Brewer renovates Delaney's house is tense because they struggle to hide their chemistry. Brewer softens towards the prickly homeowner when Delaney leaves him and his dog (who Delaney *supposedley* doesn't like) dinner and treats. Delaney gives in when he realizes that Brewer might be right when it comes to his homedecorating choices.
After one tipsy night breaks down their walls, there's no going back.
An unexpected but very small towny extra in the book is the mistery of the jam cupboard where Delaney and Brewer accidentally find some interesting pieces of history. It adds something special to the story, especially because it brings Delaney so much closer to becoming a true small town lad.
Obviously, the Coopertians are all over this new mystery and flood Delaney with all their small town charm that is impossible to resist. The distinct, a little whacky but absolutely sweet characters make this book (and series) one of my favourite small town stories. They bring fun and laughter, but they also bring community and infinite love. Especially when some of the characters that pop up from time to time are the leads from the previous books. They bring their lovely personalities and friendship to round out the romance in the story.
So many little moments made me smile or laugh out loud. I enjoyed reading this book immensely.
When you finish, definitely check out the extra content about Kel and Hayes (two prominent secondary characters) because it's the sweetest and funniest snippet ever.
Overall, this book did not disappoint. I'm looking forward to more love stories in Copper County.
