A middle-aged woman wakes up in the middle of the Australian outback and discovers her husband lying comatose beside her. A young doctor questions God s will after losing his devout grandmother to breast cancer. A lonely waitress stuck in a small town wonders how God could possibly use her. A missionary in Africa, dedicated to serving God, has a horrific car accident that leaves him brain-damaged. A shy twelve-year-old girl struggles with the idea that God wants her to write a letter to the editor of the local newspaper telling people God loves them. In every instance these ordinary people discovered that God was waiting to dry their tears and help them see His plan for their lives, a plan where good eventually emerged from the hurt and confusion. My heart was certainly touched and my soul softened as I read the inspirational short stories which complete this book. Written by Christian authors who admit that they feel compelled to write, and hope that their writing might touch someone, somewhere; they have achieved their purposes here. These writers include a concert performer, an actor, TV producer, TV host, radio host, journalists, editors, pastors, medical doctors, teachers, missionaries and public speakers. Many voices of wisdom and love reach out to the reader in the form of stories about the cancer-stricken teenager who befriended a street bum, to the conversion story of a young woman who found Jesus in a drug dealer's apartment, to a successful blind date, and to a medical doctor who came close to being bitten by a cobra. These stories may be read individually or all at once, it matters not.
My to read list is longer than the traffic on the Gardiner but I started reading this book awhile ago and I was determined to finish it. I’m glad I picked it back up. I found it in a thrift store and mainly bought it because of the title (bombastic side eye I know but I love a good cup of apple cider) however, the stories of the grace, mercy, love and faithfulness of God really do stir the heart. “Make of me a vessel that reveals the Master’s hand; Just ordinary clay transformed, Living the life He planned. Graft me to the living vine, a wild branch though I be; The fruit of love & hope & peace… His likeness born in me.”
quite amazed to find this book of entirely Canadian authors, edited by two Canadian women, authors themselves. providing a range of writing genres including poetry, fiction and non-fiction, and from single to multi page entries, i found much to satisfy my reading curiosity. in checking for this title to add to my Canadian Authors shelf and my Canadian Authors 2011 Reading Challenge, i am pleased to discover this year's 2nd Cup of Hot Apple Cider. enjoy...
2* This is a collection of inspirational works by Canadian authors. They are down-to-earth and honest, more raw and gutsy than Chicken Soup for the Soul. The Second Cup of Hot Apple Cider is slightly more polished and well-written than this one.
