In this swoony young adult rom-com, things get bumpy when a girl gets stuck on a cross-country flight with her ex—as if flying couldn’t get any worse. . . .

“A sweeping debut set in paradise, We’ve Hit Turbulence is a second-chance romance that unpacks the importance of following your heart.”—K.L. Walther, New York Times bestselling author of While We’re Young

Olive Austin just wants to get on her flight to visit her long-distance boyfriend in peace—a spring break filled with white-sand beaches, cute date nights, and soaking up the sun in Hawaii. It’s exactly what the doctor ordered...especially since lately she can't shake the feeling that her relationship is on the rocks.

Unfortunately, when she boards her cross-continental flight she discovers that her seatmate for her 13-hour journey is none other than Tyler Ferris, her ex…a.k.a the boy that her heart never really got over.

Even though Olive’s prepared to ignore him and survive the flight with her heart unscathed, Tyler has other plans, and before long, with nowhere else to go, the past begins to resurface. Now, Olive’s feeling more confused than ever about her heart, what went down that tore her and Tyler apart, and—most importantly—what she’s going to do once the turbulence passes and the flight finally lands.

3.5 stars, rounded up

This was a really cute and fun YA contemporary by a debut author. I love the idea of exes trapped somewhere (in this case, on a long airplane flight) and forced to confront their feelings.

The book is interspersed with flashbacks of Olive and Tyler’s history together. I really enjoyed seeing how the past affected the present, though I did feel like the book could have used some delineation (ie “then” and “now” above the page break) when there was a hop back in time.

Tyler was a total sweetheart. Why would Olive break up with him? He was fantastic!

This book is also set in Hawaii and I loved seeing Olive explore the island. The book made me want to plan a trip there and the descriptions of all the local food they found was making me hungry!

The relationship between Olive and her mother reminded me a bit of that movie with Hilary Duff, The Perfect Man. So much so that I ended up rewatching the movie while reading this book. The mom in this book was very similar to the mom in that movie, and Olive’s motivations to not fall into the same rut as her mother felt very reminiscent of Hilary Duff’s character in that movie. (That’s high praise, because I really enjoy that movie.)

Overall this was a cute one. Definitely check it out — you will swoon for Tyler and want to plan a Hawaiian vacation!

Olive is heading to Hawaii to surprise her boyfriend, Jack, who is in his first year of college. The plan was always for her to visit for spring break, but she hadn't heard back from him and decided to surprise him a week early. When she gets on the plane for her 11 hour journey, she finds herself sitting next to the last person she would ever expect, her ex-boyfriend, Tyler. Tyler was the love of her life a few years ago, but they had different goals. But now she's with Jack…Jack who has not responded to her messages. Jack who she was planning on spending the rest of her life with. Jack who is NOT the person sitting on the 11 hour plane ride. Now she has a VERY long plane ride with her past while she heads to find out if Jack is still her future.

I was hooked from the first sentence of this book. Olive immediately had me smiling when reading her inner dialogue and her witty remarks. Tyler was also such a great character who came off as funny and endearing. His compassion and love for Olive was radiating off the page. I found myself really stressing that Olive would cheat on Jack, but DO NOT WORRY. If you are looking for a light YA book with second chance romance and forced proximity, make sure to pick this up in January!

We've Hit Turbulence is the type of novel you read nce and then don't think about again because there was at no point in this novel that I was truly vibing with it but also I could put it down because it was so cringily adorable? I don't know how to explain it. Tyler (our love interest) was the type of guy who brings you flowers when you are sad and he's such a sweetheart. Our fmc, Olive, was a slightly annoying main character but I didn't hate her.

Overall a cute summer romance that I reccomend you bring on your beach vacation!

I started not realizing that this is YA but finished not caring either way. This is the second chance romance of a first love that went wrong but for also the wrong reasons. When seated together on a long flight, these two ex's begin to work out their stuff. He is so far gone for her that it made me just gobble up this story for more of Tyler. Watching Olive figure her stuff out while also sorting out her view of her mother was super rewarding. I love that they had to work for it and I love that we got the whole picture of how their relationship impacted their friend group as well. This is a solid debut and I am so excited to read what Cozzi gives us next.

There has been a drought of YA contemporary romance lately and so I was thrilled to get my hands on a copy of this book.

Olive is on her way to Hawaii to see her boyfriend Jack who has not been responding to her texts lately. But when her seat mate arrives on the airplane she discovers it’s her ex boyfriend Tyler.

I’m a sucker for books set in Hawaii. I will admit I was a little bummed that more than half of the book takes place on the airplane. I would’ve liked a little more of Hawaii. But the Hawaii moments were great and loved all the places they went.

It was a quick entertaining read and I finished it in two days. Definitely check it out if you are looking for a funny and heartfelt second chance romance. Thank you NetGalley and Delacorte for an ARC.

I saw this TikTok comment once that said, "Don't Drake and drive. You'll end up at your ex's place."

We've Hit Turbulence is that, in book form, and I'm so here for it 😍

Olive and Tyler are so damned sweet and so perfect for one another. I had a smile on my face the whole time I was reading this book! A must read for any fan of the second chance trope 🫶🏼

We’ve Hit Turbulence by Jessica L. Cozzi
4.5/5 ☆

𝐓𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐬:
☆Forced Proximity
☆Second Chance
☆Golden Retriever MMC
☆Hawaii Setting
☆YA Romance
☆Closed door/no spice

𝐏𝐥𝐨𝐭: When Olive boards a flight to Hawaii expecting a peaceful trip to see her long-distance boyfriend, she’s forced into an unexpected reunion with her ex, Tyler: sparking old feelings, unearthing past heartbreak, and leaving her questioning where her heart will land once the plane does.

𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰: For something with such a cute and happy cover this book was surprisingly emotional.

Olive is such a vivid, fully realized main character. She’s an anxious over-thinker with Big Feelings, and I loved her for it. Her constant second-guessing and internal monologues were so relatable, and her internal voice is so well written that by the end, I felt like I really knew her. And Tyler is the definition of a golden retriever MMC. He’s hopelessly obsessed in the sweetest way, endlessly patient, and so clearly in love it hurts.

Olive’s journey with her mother was one of my favorite parts. It’s messy in a very real teen way—trying to understand a parent while still trying to understand yourself—and incredibly rewarding to read. The friendships also feel true to the YA space: supportive, complicated, and such a huge part of Olive’s growth.

The setting is another standout. The airplane scenes are fun, but the Hawaii trip is where the book really shines. So immersive and the perfect backdrop for Olive figuring out her own heart.

It’s definitely more character-focused than plot-driven, so it starts a little slow, but the emotional payoff is absolutely worth it. If you love YA romances that take their time, dig deep, and leave you giggling by the end, this one delivers.

Long haul flight next to your ex? It’s like Snakes on a Plane anxiety in a different font.

This was a super cute YA romance, especially for a debut! Olive is an anxious over-thinker with big feelings. Tyler is the textbook yearning, hopelessly down bad boy who seems to know her better than she knows herself, at times.

The little plane moments made me giggle. I loved their cute Hawaii adventures (even though, come on Olive, stay the full vacay!), and the narrative here (a mix of present and flashbacks) worked really well for me. Olive’s baggage as regards her mom’s dating life made sense for how she viewed her own romantic life.

It read a big younger than my usual YA, but would be so, so good for a younger audience. High School me would have been even more all over this.

🎧 Shannon Tyo was a delight. Perfect performance with great differentiation in her voices and all the youthful, striving emotion this story deserves.

Oh, my heart. Usually I don’t read YA romcoms because they’re full of dumb ass kids in ways that other YA books are not. But I 100% saw Olive’s side AND they both opened their mouths and communicated AND it wasn’t a stupid reason for a breakup.

The only reason I didn’t give it a full five stars was because I wish there had been a little bit more of the end- it felt a little TOO fast for her to suddenly realize her mistakes and it was a short book, so it definitely could’ve been extended to make it feel more earned. I’m sure it’ll come off-page in a longer convo, but I didn’t think they talked enough about the compromise aspect.

I loved Olive and Tyler though and I was rooting like hell for them to get back together. Read this!

Honestly, 10/10 no notes. We’ve Hit Turbulence was SO much fun. For the first third of the book where we are on the plane listening in on Tyler and Olive’s convo on the plane, I kept thinking about how entertaining it must be for the people around them to be eavesdropping on the absolute TEA. Two teenagers who are ex’s that just so happen to be seatmates on the plane? Seated. Would have been posting the play by play live on threads.

From start to finish, I was engaged. The flashbacks building up the background between our main characters was so well done. The chemistry between the two practically leapt off the page, and it was agonizing waiting to see whether or not they would find their way back to each other and re-kindle their love.

What I really loved about WHT though was the deep dive and tackling of Olive’s internal struggles and fatal flaws (PJO reference iykyk), which shaped much of the conflict. The convos towards the end of the novel with Olive’s friends and especially her mother genuinely made me tear up and my chest hurt. It’s really rare to get an emotional reaction out of me with books, so I applaud Jess for breaking my heart a little.

Can’t wait to read more books from this debut in the future :)

3.5 stars ~ “olive austin, you’re worth everything.”

my first arc read!! (thank you netgalley!)

i’ve never read anything like this, but im glad to say that i really enjoyed this book! olive was driving me basically insane for the entire book always talking about how her and tyler were too different to work out—she really needed to just open her eyes. soso glad her and tyler worked it out! and jack deserved to be humbled badly.

second chance romance is a severely underrated trope and this book proves it 💗

An adorable YA for any fan of romance. A perfect debut novel for a talented debut author! The Hawaiian backdrop to a fun and adventurous romance that reminds us things don’t have to be perfect all the time for them to work out the way they’re meant to.

We’ve Hit Turbulence is an adorable YA second chance romance that begs the question of: what if you just let life happen instead of trying to plan and control it down to the most minute details? And what if, on your way to Hawaii to visit your college aged boyfriend who is ghosting you and you’re worried is cheating on you, you end up sitting next to your ex boyfriend who is all spontaneity and adventure in contrast with your very in control, planner-obsessed self?

As someone who was absolutely a planner-obsessed teen and took plans very seriously, I related a lot to Olive.. but at some points during the book I just wanted to grab Olive by the shoulders and shake some sense into her so she could see what (who!) was right in front of her!!! Conversely, I loved how down *bad* Tyler is for Olive, no matter how blind she seems to be toward those feelings at first, stuck on the idea that they can’t work out for a reason she overthought herself into. Tyler is the kind of guy who loves hard and does nice things for the people he cares about, even if they push him away, and he is so ‘lost puppy just wanting love’ coded toward Olive at times that it’s hard to do anything but adore him.

I also enjoyed the contrast of Olive versus her mom who romanticizes life and has endless hope for the next no matter how many relationships disappoint her, and it definitely provided some context as to why Olive’s approach to love is what it is. While reading, there were so many beautiful lines throughout this book that resonated with me. I really cannot wait to see what this author writes next!!

Thank you to Penguin Teen/Delacorte and Netgalley for the eARC!

We've Hit Turbulence by Jessica L. Cozzi
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I devoured this book, it was such a fun, exciting, and lovable romcom! We follow our main characters Olive and Tyler who used to date but are now exes and are stuck on a cross-country flight together!! This book hit every mark perfectly, I loved how the characters were developing in their relationship with each other and as individuals. The second-chance romance trope was done really well, I think that Olive and Tyler's time apart was necessary for them to realize various things about life and their relationship. Olive is the type of person who plans things down to the very second, meanwhile, Tyler over here is more of the go with the flow type of person. Even though they love each other, they end up with two broken hearts. MY POOR BABIES, but I'm so happy with how everything turned out! I loved how they both knew that they had to talk about the hard things, every scene that was about them talking about their relationship back then was perfectly executed and I love that they communicated how they felt and respected the other person's feelings!!!

The setting was so perfect! Loved the airplane segment, but the Hawaii trip stole my heart!! It felt like I was actually there! Jessica did such a great job bringing the reader along for the ride, I truly felt like I was in Hawaii with Tyler and Olive (as a fly on the wall of course😉)! This book is such a charming and phenomenal debut and I adored my time reading it!

Thank you to Netgalley and Random House Children's Books for an ARC of this truly wonderful book!

4.5 rounded to 5!!

First off, Olive totally gave me Lara Jean vibes and I was so here for that! Olive had a plan for life and was organized and then love changed everything for her and I love characters like that!

This was such a fun premise, and something I can honestly say I have never read before. It was so fun, and kept me guessing at how Olive would react to being seated next to Tyler then stuck in Hawaii with him. The story felt whole—we weren’t skipping around, scene to scene—and as a writer myself, I loved this reading experience because I was able to turn that part of my brain off and just enjoy it! The romance was so sweet, and I loved how we got Olive and Tyler’s backstory—it was interwoven with the present tense and it felt genuine to read and not just like “here’s a flashback.” I could definitely relate to my girl Olive because I, too, am a planner girly and I loved how she grew from that throughout the story!

This is not a full five stars simply because it did bother me that she texted Jack so much at the beginning and then Tyler at the end, but that’s just a me thing. Overall, it’s a great read and makes me so excited to dive deeper in the YA books being released these days because if they’re like this one, then they’re thoughtful and romantic and sweet in the best way!

Thank you Delacorte/Random House for the eARC!! Absolutely slaying with these releases!!

Thank you to NetGalley and Random House Children’s books for an advanced copy of We’ve Hit Turbulence by Jessica L. Cozzi.

This is Cozzi’s debut YA novel and it was a nice easy read. The MMC, Tyler is one of the most swoon worthy YA males I’ve read. He is easy going, insightful, self-aware, and overwhelmingly kind. The FMC, Olive, is a little harder to like. There are moments where I was ready to slap her for being so obtuse, but like any good YA novel, she figures it out eventually.

I have been lucky enough to visit Hawaii twice so it was really nice reliving some of my favorite island moments with these characters. When it comes to scenery, Hawaii can’t be beat and the author does a great job of making you feel the beauty of the island.

This is a fast moving plot with tropes of forced proximity and second chance romance with a little bit of knight in shining armor thrown in.

**Thank you to Delacorte Romance for giving me an ARC of this book via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review!**

I really enjoyed this book! It was super cute and a fairly short read. I liked the two main characters and enjoyed following their story. However, I did find the side characters to be slightly one-dimensional. I mostly enjoyed the writing, but I felt like Tyler and Olive just repeated the same dialogue/conversations/arguments over and over again. I actually rolled my eyes at how repetitive it was towards the end. The book was fairly clean, which I appreciated, and I found the romance to be really cute.

Overall, I enjoyed this book and read it very quickly. I did have some problems with the writing, which is why it's 4 stars and not 5. I would recommend this book for a quick, summer-y YA romance read.

(Disclaimer: I received this book from the publisher. This has not impacted my review which is unbiased and honest.)In We've Hit Turbulence, feelings come back to the surface and secrets come out. Only in situations of peril do these things we wish we had said, these emotions which we wish were gone, come back. And nothing brings this out more than an airplane in turbulence. I get nervous flying so I could definitely sympathize with Olive here. We've Hit Turbulence explores the allure of what could have been paired with feelings that never went away. It tells the story of a relationship that never lost the love, but faced an obstacle that they didn't think they could weather - the future. Olive thinks that Tyler isn't driven enough and that they are incompatible even though they love each other.
