I was really enjoying this run of X-Force, so it was a shame it was (a) derailed by being dragged into the X-Manhunt crossover and (b) cancelled so soon. Due to both these things, the ending felt really rushed and unsatisfying.

X-Force is forced into an abrupt conclusion, but I really enjoyed my time with this series and am sad it didn't get more time to breathe. The promise of more fracture fun is halted almost immediately as the big bad behind the fractures reveals herself (a true "Who??" moment). "Alchemical menace" La Diabla might not be a familiar name, but she's a potent villain who serves up some exciting battles for the X-Force team.

I appreciated that most of the group still got their moments to shine: Betsy Braddock and Rachel Summers growing their relationship in weird ways, Forge reviewing past relationships with great sadness, Sage helping out Professor X in the not-so-bad X-Manhunt crossover.

The final issue is a painful example of compression as battles are wrapped up in a thoroughly baffling manner (I guess there was another big bad sneaking around behind La Diabla? An even bigger "Who????" moment since the guy gets like eight pages of screentime). The reveal that Tank has been Colossus all along is hilarious since we receive absolutely no explanation for why he had to be in an armored suit all this time.

3 1/2 stars rounded up

Summary:

There’s a new threat on the horizon, and only Forge can see it. While the rest of the mutants are focused on recovering from the fall of Krakoa, Forge can see the writing on the wall. If he wants to keep the world safe, he’ll have to assemble a secret team to help him achieve his goals.

Forge’s new team, dubbed the X-Force, will consist of Sage, Rachel Summers, Betsy Braddock, and Surge. Though the latter was a surprise addition to the team. Together, they’re going to track threats across the planet, trying to stop them before they spiral out of control.

Review:

While X-Force was not my favorite of the six original From the Ashes series, I don’t think it deserved to get canceled. I was enjoying learning about different characters, and X-Force Vol. 2 really reminded me of that fact. The creative team did a great job of rushing to give us the finale we deserved, and I’m sad we missed out on any of it. Especially if it had more Sage content.

X-Force Vol. 2 neatly wraps up everything Forge has been working on, with a few complications along the way. One thing I will say is that X-Force Vol. 2 really opened my eyes to how far down the rabbit hole Sage’s abilities can go. I feel like that had never been highlighted before.

La Diabla is an okay villain. She’s interesting, but I’m sure her threat/story would have made a lot more sense had the story been given the proper time to cook. Likewise, the final conflict brought at least one unexpected arc full circle. It had been a sticking point for me, so it was refreshing to see that get some resolution.

Overall, X-Force Vol. 2 was a decent read. I’m bummed the series got canceled, because this volume showcased the potential that’s getting cut short.

This Volume is a bit all over the place, almost like they weren't exactly sure what to do with the team for a few more issues. (Yes, I skipped over the X-Manhunt issue... starting reading that crossover now)
Highlights:
- With Surge's death at the end of the last Volume, Sage has left and Forge is punishing himself. Tormenting himself with holograms of Storm and Mystique (previous relationships that got away from him). An intruder hacks into the system: La Diabla, an alchemist with an agenda to take down X-Force. She is expelled, but moves into...
- Betsy and Rachel have a private mindspace to enjoy time together. La Diabla learns very quickly is not welcome when met with attacks of magic and psionics
- La Diabla refuses to give up and joins forces with Dr Avery, who has the ability to grow into a huge monster, and some Mark 1 Sentinels disguised as X-Men (Cyclops, Angel, Colossus, etc)
-Ultimately she is revealed to be working with Moses Magnum on a device that will equalize mutants and humans. Tank removes his helmet, revealing himself to be the real Colossus, and Sage returns to help stop the plot
- The gloves that caused the machine to overload lead to a power surge and the resurrection of Surge.

If you are a fan of the team, you'll enjoy it. If not, you might be able to skip this one.
I enjoyed it somewhat... recommend.

Much like the contemporary X-Factor, the second volume of X-Force improves on its debut installment mainly by ignoring its core conceit. So we have no more breathless rushing from one disaster to another.

Instead we get the villain behind it all revealed, and she's no one we care about, but she's working for someone else ... that we mostly don't care about. And there's some fake Colossus (why?) and Tank is revealed as the obvious person with no explanation (why?) and everything devolves into fighting again, which is pretty much like the first volume, but at least the fights seem connected now.

There's about a third of a good issue with Rachel and Betsy. And the terrible X-Manhunt crossover feels less intrusive mainly because the author doesn't dump his main plot.

But otherwise, this is as forgettable as its predecessor and like the aforementioned contemporary X-Factor will never be mentioned again. (We hope!)

Cancellation?

Explains SO much. All the best parts of this storyline had to get glossed over or ignored to get to a suitable end. Needed at least one Cable cameo or a visit by Cannonball. I swear this team is cursed to get continually rebooted and their leader written dissimilar to everything before.

Tank? Why the mask? Did his Krakoa time mess him up THAT bad?
Rachel? She's stitched together psychically by a, 'Counsil of Rachels'? WTH?
Forge? Ditched the Krakoa-tech? Mystery psi shielding?
Sage? Upgraded herself out of alcohol addiction?
Captain Britain, 'Betsy Braddock'? More smooching and a LOT less Otherworld magic
Surge? RIP. Too similar to Jolt from the first Thunderbolts team. Like, EXACTLY

I was pretty sure this was building to an unsatisfying conclusion, but hoo boy was this a weird ending to this arc. The whole twist inside a twist thing just isn’t very compelling and then centering the final issues on first Dr Estrada and then not really explaining her powers before then folding in Moses Magnum (who?!) just felt lazy and undermined much of the X-Force related drama. A status quo reset of an ending was also meh. Folding in a quick detour to resolve/setup what’s going on with Prof X was fine but didn’t feel like it logically belonged in this arc. The sequence with Cable at the end was also…was it meant to be thematic around the idea of these stories never ending? Honestly I’m not sure what I was expecting from all of this but the overall feel was a big 🤷‍♂️.

I admit I enjoyed this book more than the first volume. I wanted to rate it 3.5 stars there was just too much chaos and craziness to round it up.

Since the tragedy of the last volume, Forge is seeking counselling with virtual assistants. However, he might have been hacked by friend and foe. What is Forge's ultimate solution and can Sage hold the team together? She might also have to take a side quest as part of the X-Manhunt.

I have to say as much as I prefer Kwannon as Psylocke, Betsy was great in this volume. The artwork was great and there is a lot of action. There is a bonus story of Cable and the possible past and future of X-Force. The book finishes with a variant cover gallery.

Mediocre but competent. I get refelect-y when a run ends.

This run didn't really work. It dropped the ball on character arcs and interactions and instead took us on this empty plot-driven journey.

That said, I think Marvel needs to commit to a creative team. Not cancel all the time if it isn't hitting the projected number...or whatever the calculous is. Let writer find their voice and footing. Se where it goes.

But maybe also find a better fit for the book first.

This just wasn't very good. Nothing that happens here matters in any way, shape, or form. It might have if the book had had time to breathe, but I guess a number of these titles received early cancellations? The art is pretty variable, too.

Better than NYX. Great characters, decent art and the addition of the summary of X-Force's history in #10 and the 300 issue cover gallery was a welcome surprise.

This just wasn't good. You can tell Thorne had to squish all his plans for the book into the last few issues and then the next to last issue was a crossover so he lost control over that as well. So many things in this make no sense or are unexplained, like the whole deal with "Tank". Shouldn't have even bothered to explain it, because I was just left with "Huh?" when they did. I'm sure the 2nd arc in all of these canceled X-books are going to be bad. Issue #10 was also legacy #300 so there's a crap bonus story that takes place around X-Force #25 of the original run.
