NYX (2024)

NYX, Vol. 2: Mojo City

Rate this book
Life isn’t easy for the young mutants of the Big Apple, as Kamala Khan and Laura Kinney - aka Ms. Marvel & Wolverine - continue to fight the good fight!

Congratulations, Kamala Khan — you got tickets to Dazzler! We hope you survive the experience! Because Mojo also has his sights set on the hottest show in town, and the ensuing battle might just bring the house down. Then Synch revives a Krakoan tradition when he challenges Prodigy to battle to the death in the Circle Perilous! And Wolverine is about to come face-to-face with her old friend Hellion — now calling himself the Krakoan, the proud new face of mutant terrorism. As they confront each other, their intense past and what they’ve become, one thing is for sure: They’re not kids anymore. Plus: when Charles Xavier goes on the run, his first stop is New York — but what will that mean for this generation of Children of the Atom? And when Mojo returns as a bigger threat than ever (in all ways!), everything the NYX community has built is at risk of crumbling to pieces!

I wanted to rate this book 2.5 stars. There are two ways to look at this book. On its own, it is a mess jumping around from one rushed storyline to the next. For this, I would have rated it 2 stars. However, if I look at it as an enhancement book that is used to forward a few characters' own stories or introduce a bigger storyline. I would give it 3 stars.

The NYX crew are on a night off and out. Attending a concert by Dazzler but trouble follows them. An intro to the Dazzler series and a return. Another return and a challenge. Then an intro to X-Manhunt. Miss Marvel's family problems. Finishing with the battle for NYC the NYX crew steps up.

As I said the book is all over the place. It is pretty hard to follow. It is a real shame that the artwork is very good and every issue/chapter starts well, but is rushed in the middle and end.

NYX comes to a close, but not before bringing in new blood, old grudges, and a battle with Mojo.

Just when NYX really seems to be hitting its stride, it's over. There's some familiar faces, unexpected returns that I never expected to see ever again, and an attempt made to tell stories for every character (except poor Anole), but with only really four issues here since one of them is taken out as part of X-Manhunt, it's difficult for everything to hit as hard as it should.

The continuation of the Krakoan story is well done, and there's groundwork put into place for further Kamala Khan stories that Kelly and Lanzing have planned for Giant-Size X-Men, but there's definitely a feeling that there was a lot more story for everyone involved here. Even Mojo's final plot, which ends on a high note, makes the big man himself feel like no real threat himself, just a faceless blob (and he's already a blob with a face).

The artwork's not bad - Michael Shelfer heads over from DC Comics for an issue while Enid Balam takes an issue, and then series artist Francesco Mortarino finishes off the final three. Good stuff all around, even when things get very busy in the last few issues.

Doesn't really have the page space to finish in a satisfying manner, but it tries its hardest.

It is SUCH a bummer how much wasted potential this book had. Every issue felt like the outline of a plot, not a story itself. I really like the deeply weird, super edgy original NYX series (it’s bad but in an interesting way) and this was the exact opposite: conventional and afraid of taking chances.

It’s a bummer to see Laura Kinney and Kamala Khan in such a rough series. I hope Laura’s liberated from Erica Schultz soon and Kamala gets a new creative team after these Giant Size one-shots. Blegh.

Well, of the flawed, interesting, but doomed team books, this manages its rushed finish better than X-Factor. Yes, every issue is cramming in at least twice as much story as it can really let breathe, so that nothing quite lands, whether the soap opera plotlines (two former lovers meet again on opposite trajectories), the big themes (with Xavier's dream dead and Magneto broken too, Prodigy and Synch clash along new lines over what becomes of mutantkind now), or even the superhero smackdowns. And there's a limit to how far meta commentary from Mojo about cancellation &c can cover, especially if, like me, Mojo gets your back up. But it still had heart, and something to say, and in the post-Krakoa X-books, those are perilously rare commodities.

Another rushed conclusion to an X-spinoff series, but at least Mojo City still offers a few worthwhile character moments amidst the headlong rush to a battle with Mojo. Hellion in particular gets a nice turnaround arc after he was the big bad in the first volume. Synch... less so, since he randomly shows up in town, eager for a fight with Prodigy (which fizzles into friendship?).

Kamala continues to be the star here, which makes sense since she'll get her own X-spinoff series by these authors next. Mojo is a decent villain and takes over the city in an interesting way, but it's also the millionth "New York City is invaded for two hours" storyline in Marvel comics. Still, there's a lot of heart in NYX, which you can't say of so many other Marvel comics. Once again: I'm sorry to see it go.

Issues 6-8 were great. Unfortunately issues 9-10 were terrible.

I enjoyed this Volume, but it did come off a little bit "monster of the week" at times. (Not sure if anything feels that way from not reading X-Manhunt yet... very very soon)
Highlights:
- Hellion (now going as The Krakoan) is under the influence of Mojo and decides to pick a fight at the Dazzler concert (nice crossover with the brief title!)
- Synch has a problem with how public NYX is as an organization and challenges Prodigy to a battle about it. Their differences are worked out, unlike Kamala having to fight her cousin, who hates mutants all of a sudden.
- Hellion is heading off to prison, and Laura and the gang head off to rescue him, thinking he was under influence to murder. Turns out he made the decision on his own, but actually hid them away instead of murdering them.
- NYC comes fully under the influence of Mojo! NYX is eventually able to shut it down, but turns out Kamala's cousin is a large part of it. When she reveals her identity to him, he shames her, tells her to not ever tell her parents... and she quits heroing (Her next chapter is Giant Size)

Overall, an alright Volume. I'll be interested to see how everything links together with Manhunt.
Recommend.

NYX is all about living lives and not following dreams...

With this series ending, they do their best to finish the few threads they started. Prodigy lost his teaching job, but is now lecturing and gathering up like minded New Yorkers. Kamala is STILL struggling with keeping a secret identity. (how many mind wipes has she doled out to family and friends?) Mister Friend aka Mojo makes a play for control of NYC

Oh, and Charles Xavier is still an ass. The X-Manhunt storyline cameos and BOY is Xavier still a lying sack of s*#@.

This could have been something similar to a New Mutants or whatever. Another title for a new team of just mutants trying to make it in this world. No crazy space hopping or whatever. Oh well.

Bonus: Kiden is from the original NYX series. Deep cut, guys.
Bonus Bonus: Did I read it right? Local is now ACTUALLY a part of the city?!

Feel like it’s been a minute since I was able to get through one of these Marvel TPBs. And what a welcome back this was (sarcasm). Pretty sure I’ve been fairly lukewarm on the NYX series — the characters are fine but it seems to keep setting up threads that it either rushes suddenly to payoff or never seems to be around to delivering on. This stuff with Mojo building up to Mojo City felt really silly, and the stuff with Kamala and her cousin Bilal felt incredibly rushed. I did enjoy that there was some sense of crossover with the current Dazzler series, but the plot points around Charles Xavier felt convoluted at best. I just want a better sense of where this is all heading. Currently feels like a lot of water treading.

This comic just tried too hard to be the Gillen + McKelvie Young Avengers, but it didn't reach those heights. Instead it had a floundering plot and not enough attention to the characters, which is a shame because when we got in tight on a character, it was great. I loved the Hellion focused issue particularly.

And, oh, if that's what the X-Manhunt crossovers are going to be, it's going to be a terrible crossover, as it was just Prof. X shows up, does something malevolent and runs on. Like the Fugitive, but screwing up the flow of the individual comics with a laughable plot. Not great.

While Volume 2 isn't as strong as Volume 1 I wanted this series to go on much longer than it did. I really loved the art, especially the coloring of issue 10, and I wanted to spend more time with these characters in this New York City.

Not terrible, but feels really rushed and fragmented (especially the big battle with Mojo). The art, though once again widely variable, is still fairly decent throughout. Another victim of the rush to re-start the X-books, apparently.

Dusted. I do find this group of heroes a bit...limp but at least the Mojo was at least a decently written villain.

Summary:

The era of Krakoa may be over, but many heroes are finding their way forward. Prodigy has taken a teaching job. Wolverine is working from the shadows, keeping her people safe. Ms. Marvel is learning what it means to be both Inhuman and mutant.

Unfortunately, many threats lurk in the city, some human, some not so much. These heroes will have to work together if they want to keep the city safe for everyone, mutants, humans, and Inhumans.

Review:

There’s a lot going on in NYX Vol. 2, and I do mean a lot. We have personal dilemmas (Kamala’s family, Laura’s friends/romances, Anole’s hopes, Sophie’s Cuckoo history, etc), new villains, and many twists.

I’ll admit that I wanted to like this volume more than I did. To start with, there was a lot of potential in Hellion as a villain. I didn’t hate how he was handled here, as it was good for Laura to learn non-violent means of handling threats.

However, that was only part of the stories crammed into this final volume. Part of that, I’m sure, is because the series got cut short. But it’s also because they had to tie in at least one larger universe event, courtesy of Xavier and his escape. If you’re not following the other series, you’ll wind up feeling lost there. Even keeping up with everything, his sudden appearance in this series feels jarring.

I can see why it was forced into NYX, as showing Xavier using such hopeful characters is meant to drive home a point. We get it. This isn’t the Xavier we thought we knew and loved. I just wish it hadn’t stolen from NYX’s finale, you know?

The final battle, which Xavier kind of kicked off, was okay. It did feel rushed, partially because of how it all started. There are a few heavy-hitting moments, both physically and emotionally. I’m happy that at least Ms. Marvel’s story is going to keep popping up in Giant-Sized X-Men. I guess we’ll have to see how that goes.

From the Ashes
Ms. Marvel/Wolverine/Sophie Cuckoo
Lower East Side Drama
Mutants/Inhumans

Single issues. Uneven and I feel like the cancellation and crossover books combined to make this much more miss than hit for me, even though I love Wolverine and Kamala, and Kamala had a really good story in this one.
