Review for complete series

Ian claims to see fairies, yet it only earns him a reputation of being a liar. His friend Rin is the only one who believes in Ian's stories. But there seems to be another soul that resides inside his body who is now bent on ruining Ian's life. Soon he loses both his father, Rin and even his body - now he needs the help of the fairies he's seen for all his life.

The biggest problem with Fairy Cube has is either that it's far too short or that it tries to do too much with the little space given. As is typical for Kaori Yuki, this story puts a dark twist on fairies and delivers yet another macabre story. There are enough plot points to create a series trice as long than it actually is. As a result, it's a rather hard-to-follow-story that jumps from one focus to the next, leaving many things unclear or simply doesn't satisfy.

Ian is a nice enough main character, although nothing about him seemed overly memorable. Nonetheless, he is the one character where we learn the most of. Although I love how Kaori Yuki usually gives a backstory to most of her characters and makes sure they are all involved, it was simply too much in this particular work. She tries to have everyone's story and tragic fates included, yet because there is so much of it, it's not easy to connect to the characters and I feel as though there wasn't any closure for most of the cast. For some, I still don't understand what their motives were or what happened to them in the end.

It is certainly an interesting take on fairies and well worth to have a look at if one likes Kaori Yuki's works, but it is definitely not her most refined story which is a real shame.

It was super confusing at first to figure out what the hell was going on but after maybe like 100 pages I kinda got a better grip on the story. It's a really interesting concept but I don't really feel like the execution is there...I hope the next 2 volumes are good as I'm still gonna finish the series.

The story-telling is inexpert, very jumbled, with some confused perspective. There's little to no investment of the reader into the characters -- i have barely any sympathy for any of them. Will probably not read future volumes.

--

Ok, the second half was far superior to the first half. Despite the confusing and poorly handled character and theme introductions, the book does go through some interesting twists and conflicts. There's hardly any new ground here, but I'm interested enough that I'll be borrowing the next couple volumes and reading through them.

Normally I really like Kaori Yuki's work.
This is just a mess.
It's confusing as heck at the beginning, and you have no idea what is going on. (And it's not even a case of 'lets throw them in the middle of an action scene and then do backstory.')
The drawings (usually enough to make up for it) aren't that great - they're very 'busy' and mundane for Yuki's usual style.
I'm not impressed. I couldn't even make it halfway through this first volume.
Skip it.

I love Kaori Yuki's style. This has great backgrounds and plenty of cute characters. The story, as usual from her, is a dark gothic tale. This one has a good bit of love thrown in. I do like Rin and Ian's relationship, as you can see how they care about each other. I am rather interested to see where this all goes...

This manga is ridiculous. Basically every character with more than one scene gets a TRAGIC BACKSTORY - there are way too many for a series with only three volumes (maybe it would work with 5?). Full of the usual Kaori Yuki tropes - fucked up families, sanity issues, obsessive love, unusual gender presentation, wings, homoerotic way-more-than-subtext... The melodrama is palpable.

Obviously I adore it.

My only serious issue was that the ending was rather confusing. I actually had to reread to understand what even happened. (And, as Kaori Yuki works are prone to, the pacing is off, with way too much story crammed in to too short a story.)

(Note: this review applies to the complete series - all three volumes.)

Oh boy.

I wanted to like this and I was interested in what was going to happen next, but oh boy. It was hard to follow to begin with. I had a hard time figuring out who was who, which was weird, but once I got it, it worked out.

I just wanted something happy to happen and that did not happen at all. I have a feeling it's going to take a while for anything good to happen in this series. We'll see if I pick up the rest, I'm not sure how I'm feeling about this series.

This could have had better world building & pacing of story. Everything happens to fast but I understand it & I’m here for it. Besides I specifically picked this up because it’s such a short series (only three volumes long).

Setelah Hakushaku Cain series tamat, Yuki – sensei hanya mengeluarkan beberapa one – shot manga.
Begitu sadar, Ian kaget melihat Rin bersama pemuda lain yaitu dirinya sendiri.

The summary for this manga does nothing for the story, and that goes for the one on the back cover, too. This is so much more than a boy visiting a fairy world to gain power and rid the world of an evil Tokage (who the summary doesn't even explain). Here's what's really going on, and it's a storyline I'm pretty sure can only be handled by Kaori Yuki.
Ian has been able to see fairies since he was little, and he's pretty sure it's because of his mother. She left him and his father when he was little, leaving his father quite bitter. Ian is also convinced that she was a fairy. What else would explain his ability to see them and the wing-shaped birthmarks on his back? Still at a young age, he befriends a girl named Rin, and he is able to show her a glimpse of this fairy world. She instantly loves it, the only person Ian feels he can trust with his secret. They vow to go to this world together in the future.
But Rin moves away and Ian's father's mood only gets worse as the years go by. Ian doesn't get off much better, because "his other self" is now using others to torment him. Tokage, who has green hair and red eyes like his mother, can possess other people. His mischief is bad timing with a string of murders in which people's backs are flayed open, with blood-spurts like wings. Dubbed the fairy murders, Ian's father is even more annoyed with his son's sight and worries he has something to do with it. He even burns the birthmarks on Ian's back to destory the image of the wings. When Rin returns and reconnects with Ian, things start to look a little brighter.. that's until Tokage takes his final step, possess Ian's father, and uses him to stab Ian in the back... literally.
Now Tokage has taken over Ian's body, and Ian's "soul" is trapped in limbo, accompanied by a fairy named Ainsel and her master Kaito, the only two who are able to see him. They offer a way for him to gain a human body again, to take revenge on Tokage and rescue Rin from the evil spirit's clutches (because nobody realizes Ian is no longer Ian). Thus the journey begins.
I loved this dark beginning. I wish it lasted longer, honestly. It was brilliant and creepy, something Yuki thrives on, and don't let Fairies get in your way. Sure, they're magical and pretty and all fairies are supposed to be. But they don't make the story froo-froo. Ainsel is a vessel of power, and her teaming up with Ian will only help his revenge reach its goal. But people who make deals with Fairies cannot always handle the power that comes with it. We'll have to wait and see who will rise and who will explode from the pressure, with wings of blood.

Overall Rating: A
Summary: A three volume fantasy shōjo created by Kaori Yuki, which follows high school boy Ian Hasumi. Ian was born with wing marks on his back and the ability to see fairies and the world they live in. Unfortunately for Ian, no one believes him, and have taken to calling him "Ian the Liar". Ian also has a spirit twin named Tokage who hates him and an abusive father who burned the fairy marks off his back when Ian's mother left to prevent Ian from "flying away". Not so great actually.

Recently, there have been a series of murders in the city. The victims have had their backs slit open and the blood spurting out has formed the shape of wings. As a result, the crimes have been dubbed "the fairy murders".

Ian's childhood friend Rin Ishinagi is the only one that ever seemed to beleive Ian's stories of fairies. In fact, he was once able to show her the fairy world. Now she has returned to the city, and Ian's feelings for her are returning as well. Unfortunately, they may cause him even more trouble!

Okay, I picked this one up on a whim in Borders the other day (I thought the title sounded funny), and was pleasantly surprised by how good it was. The characters and plot drew me in and has me wanting to read volume 2 as soon as possible (it's already out but I haven't had a chance to get back over to Borders. I definitely recommend this one to fantasy and shōjo lovers. Check it out the first 22 pages online here

This manga was confusing as hell. I’m glad to know other reviewers felt similarly and it wasn’t just me being dumb and missing the point. I loved the overall idea, but the way things played out seemed a bit messy. There was this one scene where all these random people were fighting Tokage and I still have no idea who that chick was or why they were attacking each other. I feel like this should have been an anime or movie. The action would have translated better and not seemed all over the place.

My biggest problem was that I didn’t get what Kaito was about. I didn’t understand his motivations at all. He was very inconsistent as a character. Like, is he helping Ian? Is he trying to kill him? I have no idea. For example, . I’m sorry, but that made that chapter of the manga seem so pointless. That said, I did like the plot once Ian’s evil self took over. I still didn’t quite get everything that was happening, but I got a clearer sense of where the storyline was going.

Kaori Yuki is probably my #1 writer for non-shoujo manga. I have to admit, the artwork and story was a bit of a downgrade compared to Godchild. I can’t help but miss the darker imagery and gruesome plotlines I liked from her previous work. She excels the best when it comes to creepy and morbid. Overall, this kept me interested enough to at least read the next volume. I’ll probably check out her newer series ‘Alice in Murderland’ as well because it seems more in the vein of what I like about her work.

Now that I’ve finished reading Fairy Cube, here’s my full thoughts on it:
The idea is rich and grand, so grand that the art quality cannot contain it. If only the series were longer; if only the panels were not so crammed together… Some questions still hang in my mind, though, for example:

1) What kind of man is Ian and Isaiah’s father, actually? He is probably one of the, if not the, most poorly-developed characters in the series. Book after book, we’re like seeing a different man. I’m not talking about him being ‘influenced’ by Tokage; I’m talking about his own personality. He changes? But no sufficient explanation is there to account for his changes.

2) Why, oh why, it happens much too often in the series, when two people that have known each other for a long time meet, they need to spend time recalling their past aloud—sometimes so long, detailed, and loud that other people can’t help but overhearing the story?

All sharp corners, fast-paced confusion and kinetic fusion between Celtic folklore and prototypical Manga elements, Fairy Cube (Volume One) surpasses all expectations. Its strength resides in the uniqueness of the premise and leitmotif - faerie myth - and the detailed, delicate storytelling of Kaori Yuki.

The one caveat is the initial confusion of characters and background narrative. Otherwise, I delighted in this collision of two cultural storytelling genres, strung together with emotive overtones reminiscent of Gothic literature.

NB: Within this series, there is mention of abuse and implied sexual assault (attempted or executed - unclear). It is very brief and more insinuated than concrete, yet still worth mentioning should it be triggering to certain readers.

This manga is about Ian -- a boy who can see fairies. Labeled as a liar, Ian has tried to keep this phenomena to himself. However, when a string of suspicious deaths occur (known as the fairy murders) Ian becomes involved in something more complex and sinister than a few harmless fairy stories.

Fairy cube is a slightly dark shoujo series with elements of psychological suspense and fantasy. The artwork in this series is also a bit darker, relying on frequently heavy brush strokes.

It has an interesting premise, but I felt it became too complicated too quickly. And although the series is named Fairy Cube, I still do not have a clear picture of the 'cubes' importance. In addition to this, the anticipated romantic relationship is void of any sort of tension at this point. Needless to say, it's not one of my favourite series - and I'm hesitant to read more.

Finally got around to reading the Japanese volumes WITH a translation, which helps my understanding tremendously. [My Japanese is good, but it's not that good.] This is a somewhat shorter, less disturbing, slightly lighter play on themes from Angel Sanctuary - namely the soul/body switching and winged otherworldly beings exploding things, with the requisite crossdressing and taboo sexual tension. That said, it's certainly worth reading for itself - Rin is the first female character in a Kaori Yuki comic that I've actually rooted for, and I'm a sucker for mysterious men in eyepatches.

Ian can see fairies. But no one believes him...Except for Rin.

And when Ian loses her, and his body, to Tokage, his twin that no one can see but him. Tokage (meaning lizard) looks exactly like Ian, except he has green hair and red eyes. He hates Ian more than anything, and does everything to hurt him, and even takes over his body and steals Rin away from Ian.

Ian has a pair of wings on his back that his own father burns with a candle, claiming that Ian can't leave him like Kureha, Ian's mother.

Who is Ian, why can he see faeries, and will he ever get his life back?

This book surprised me. When I saw the word fairy I thought cute and sweet. Nope Dark and mysterious. I should of known since the author had done Godchild.

This is about some fairies that are murdering people that they are trying to use as hosts. There is a young boy who used to have wings but doesn't anymore. His name is Ian and for some reason a spirit kept telling him he hated him.

I liked Ian he was a sweet gental guy that everyone calls Liar since he said he could see fairies.
