I'm (Sort of) an Expert on Ghosts

Rate this book
Tsunoda Naoki is a ghost expert! Maybe. Okay, not really. He just pretends to be one, scraping a living by putting the easily-spooked at ease. But his luck seems to run out when he’s suddenly got a real ghost to deal with. He can’t even see this spirit, let alone exorcise her—and to complicate matters further she apparently seems to like Naoki… a lot.
Is this ghost hunt a romantic comedy or a tragic horror?

For people who see my reviews and books read on here, it probably comes as no surprise whatsoever that I'm interested in light novels, a subgenre of Japanese books associated with anime, and their publications in English. As such, I visit the site englishlightnovels.com quite a bit, and yesterday, when I found out that the webmaster there, if that's the correct word, had written their own light novel, I decided to read it.

I admittedly had a little trouble getting into I'm (Sort of) an Expert on Ghosts. The start of the story is incredibly slow-paced, and at first, it sounds so accurately like a translated light novel that it felt like I was reading a writing exercise instead of a normal novel. After the first few chapters, though, it really won me over. Spirit-san is an excellent character, even after the tone takes a turn, and the narrator is just indifferent enough to make it feel like the reader is experiencing the story for themselves, while being just involved enough to stay interesting.

I felt the oddest part of this novel is that it feels like it could have distinctly been split into two shorter books. There's one narrative arc connecting the two chunks, making it fair that the two parts are in the same novel, but at the same time, there's an odd feeling of disconnection.

Anyway, I am not saying more than usual about I'm (Sort of) an Expert on Ghosts in order to denigrate it. I enjoyed this book much more than I expected and, as it's a free ebook, am surprised that it's not more widely read. If this had been a professional release, I'd be whining in e-mails about why the next volume isn't out yet, despite my firm understanding of publication schedules.

I'm (Sort of) an Expert on Ghosts is not a perfect novel, but it's entertaining, strikes a good balance in terms of tone, and, after a strange-feeling start, has the light novel tone down really well. I would be thrilled to see this series continue, as I feel like it really hits its stride in the second half. However, even if it doesn't, this is a worthwhile stand-alone volume.
