It has been a few months since I had last picked up some volumes in this story, but I managed to reserve and take out the last 3 all at once from the library!
Once again, entertaining, fast paced, action!
Felt a little too quick this time round, with some scenes not being fully explained...

Still good fun, nevertheless.

Pick it up, give it a go and enjoy! >(^_^)<

Alright everyone! We are getting closer to the finale of the “Black Cat” series and this volume, “Black Cat Volume 18: Guiding Light” will not disappoint you in the slightest!

In this volume, Train and Eve finally confront the Doctor and it turns out that the Doctor’s powers involves the Doctor creating an illusionary world that comes straight from his mind and he uses these powers to trick his enemies into certain doom. It turns out that the Doctor tricked Train into thinking that Saya and Kyoko, the two girls who cared about Train the most, would want to attack him for no reason at all in this illusionary world. Also, the Doctor seems to have plans for Eve, which involves cutting her open to see how her powers work. Meanwhile, Sephiria the most powerful member of Chronos, ends up fighting Creed by herself when she finally gets to him.

Can Train and Eve escape from the Doctor’s illusionary world and can Sephiria defeat Creed?

Read this volume to find out!

Kentaro Yabuki’s writing just continues to get better and more intense as the volumes goes on as we get closer to the finale of the “Black Cat” series! I loved the way that Kentaro Yabuki finally showed us what kind of character the Doctor really is and what his powers are since in previous volumes, while we had some glimpses into his personality, we still did not know what he is truly capable of when it comes to defeating his enemies and we finally get to see that in this volume. I was truly terrified at the idea that the Doctor can create parallel worlds to what the characters are used to and use it against them, especially the scenes where he traps Eve in a world where the dolls are attacking her (oh man, that scene just creeps me out since I do have issues in horror movies when it comes to dolls)! I also enjoyed the battle between Creed and Sephiria since I was hoping that we would get a battle between Creed and Sephiria, since it seemed like they would most likely fight each other as they would have a personal vendetta against each other. Kentaro Yabuki’s artwork is as usual gorgeous to look at, especially during the fight scenes between Creed and Sephiria as it looked intense and exciting at the same time!

For anyone who does not like scary scenes in a manga series, this volume does have some scary scenes that involves the Doctor warping the worlds around Train and Eve, especially during the scene where Eve, a young girl, is attacked by Dolls that look pretty creepy.

Overall, “Black Cat Volume 18: Guiding Light” is a fantastic volume for fans of the “Black Cat” series who want to see fantastic battles between the characters and see how high the stakes are for the characters at this point!

Eve and Train face off against the "Doctor", who uses his Tao to do TARDIS type stuff, instead of just having a magical scalpel like at the start of the series. Yes, I get it, evil Doctor Who, very nice reference, and what an ass-pull of a conclusion to. But the Chrono Numbers are here, ready to challenge Creed! We've burnt through almost all of the antagonists, and all we have left are a couple stragglers, the big bad himself, and a hint at some new out-of-left-field secret weapon of some sort. So, yeah, more rushed fights and ass-pulls to come!

It comes off as a volume that reduces a shadowy figure behind the science of the series to a maniac scientist archetype. The volume really only serves to reduce the villain count and remind of us of old characters that are doing little to fuel the overall story at this point. We trudge to the end.

These volumes are action-packed, yet boring. These mini-bosses should pack more of a punch! I like the idea of the doctor’s tao powers. Any and all moments with Eve are heartwarming. Saya’s presence, while absurd, is welcome. Then there’s the final chapter…

Creed vs. Sephira :O

It's really not fair to evaluate volume 18 of a series when you haven't read volumes 1 through 17. However, the tools needed to get a feel for the characters and the story were provided and I enjoyed the mix of adventure and humor. Too bad I didn't acquire the first 17 volumes.

I feel like The Doctor fight is more aligned with an offbeat JoJo fight and thus feels a bit out of place--let alone kind of a slog.

Ok I don't really like this Doctor fight. I mean if it was an adult on that table it wouldn't be so creepy, but seeing Eve's underage body there... nope. Not in my silly lil shonen manga thanks.
Also this deus ex machina in Train's section..... nah. Tha's jus' bad.

Shaolee is so cool oh my GOD.
Also always happy to see Jenos my beloved, even if it's just to show his face and add absolutely nothing to the narrative.
And Kyoko! Her, too.

One thing I really like about this volume is the lil bonus manga pages by the author's assistants! They're well-drawn and cute and fun! I like the way they portray Yabuki-sensei with a fan hahaha. They seem to really love their boss.

And!!! What a cliffhanger!!!

Train left underground organization Chronos to live his life on his own terms - two years later, he's working with his partner Sven as a sweeper. The action scenes are well-choreographed, the art is great, and the plot is easy to follow and (mostly) believable. As always the action scenes are great, but I love the Doctor's character because he's just the type of twisted person to follow someone as crazy as Creed; I love how he exploits Eve's weakness, and how he just doesn't get how what he's doing is wrong. He reminds me a lot of Richtofen from Call of Duty's Nazi Zombies...

I'm not sure I loved Saya's role, though. It felt a bit like a deus ex machina, and it didn't feel as strong as the rest of the series, though it was a cute touch. My feelings are torn!

Great action, though, and good development with a side character like the Doctor!

Laahck! I do not like that doctor. Eve is a precious child and you shall not lay a single hand on her. Thank you Train and Saya for coming to the rescue. Battles are just ehh again. Chronos has shown up to battle again. So guess what? Lin and Jenos!!! Sephiria has gone to challenge Creed. All the action is building up, and there seems to be so much more left to go.

Ewww that Doctor is horrible! Poor Eve!
And Train! So the Doctor's idea of fun is to see people killed by those that love them?!
