Train Heartnet, also known as "Black Cat," was an infamous assassin for a secret organization called Chronos...until he abandoned that cold-blooded existence to live on his own terms as an easygoing bounty hunter. But is Train's past as far behind him as he thinks? Train and the Sweeper Alliance make it to Creed's island hideout. However, the Apostles of the Stars are ready and waiting for them. Separated from the others, Eve must finally do battle on her own when confronted by Leon, the wind master. She has the powers she needs to win, but does she have the heart?
Also known as 矢吹 健太朗. He is a Japanese manga artist. His mentor was Takeshi Obata, the illustrator of Death Note, Hikaru no Go and Bakuman. Yabuki is best known for his series Black Cat which ran from 2000 to 2004 in Weekly Shōnen Jump and later adapted into an anime. Since 2004, he has only been working as illustrator to works written by other authors. Most notably on the series To Love-Ru alongside his former assistant Saki Hasemi.
Eve stole this volume for me, obviously! She is so awesome and is definitely one of my favourite characters. I love how she has grown throughout this series and showed her morals when faced against her first separated duel. The only thing I wish was different was that she wasn't sexualized as she is on some of the cover art as there's no need for it. She is a child. This volume is one of my favourites. It felt refreshed with new elements such as a revamped character refresher layout at the start and a few fun panels in between chapters. I liked seeing more of River in this volume too, however, I have to ask... if his fist ability can do all that then why didn't he attempt it when faced against Train? I feel like it was just a convenient addition to facing a mutual foe. Leon turned out to be a more complex character too and it was interesting to hear is back story, however why is he so against girls? Is it just the simple "boys are better than girls" mentality that some kids have? But even so, he's fixated on it so much so that it just feels sexist. I may be thinking too much into it.
Eve versus Leon. This is probably one of my favorite battles simply because Eve is one of my favorite characters. Leon is a decent kid too, just a little misguided. I love the way Eve fights and passively defeats her enemies. She turns into a mermaid at one point which is so cool.
This is one of those quickie reviews since there isn’t much to say. It begins with Train having to fight his Apostle of the Stars opponent (with obvious results) and ends on a cliffhanger of Sven going to fight his opponent. In between that is River fighting his Apostle and Eve fighting hers. There are two types of fight manga, ones where they manage to still tell a story or ones where there’s no dialogue, no character growth and leaves you feeling cheated. This is the former.
Really, Train, River and Sven’s fights didn’t do much for me but Eve’s did. She’s fighting against the child Apostle, Leon who commands the air. In this fight, there is a lot of character development. Eve is more than a nano-enhanced girl. She’s smart and caring and willing to sacrifice herself if necessary to make her point.
All in all Black Cat is one of those stories you don’t really have to think much when reading but it’s fun anyhow.
Kentaro Yabuki really showing his love for Dragon Ball Z here. Preta Ghoul is a Picollo knock-off, and Leon is... well just look at that cover. He's Trunks! And Eve is like Teen Gohan. And everyone remembers that part in DBZ where Gohan and Trunks have big energy battles right? Okay so not all of it translates 1:1.
But the big battles between the Sweepers Alliance and the Apostles of the Stars is starting here. Train and River get in their own fights, which are neat enough, but the real draw is Eve vs. Leon. Eve's quick transformations make for a flashy and varied battle, while Leon's command of the air takes the battle to the skies and turns the environment into an obstacle. Yabuki can draw cool fights when he wants to!
This volume sets up, and begins to transition towards the endgame - unfortunately, it drops a lot of interesting nuance by simply having the villains tossed aside by our set of protagonists. The interesting dynamic set up in the earlier volumes by warring factions seems to be over, leaving us imwith fun, but predictable battles to begin the rounding out if the series. Shame.
It’s been so long since watching the show I’m not sure who was there and who wasn’t. I vaguely remember some dude fighting like Gambit. Anyways, fights everywhere! Eve kicks butt :D She’s protecting people :3
Probably my favorite volume in the series, including my personal favorite fight (Eve vs. Leon). Finally seeing Eve get an all-out fight is all I ever wanted.
I seriously have been enjoying Kentaro Yabuki’s “Black Cat” series for years now and the fifteenth volume called “Black Cat Volume 15: Eve Attacks” has really turned this series around for me as it concentrates more on how tough Eve can really be!
After the Sweeper Alliance got attacked by Creed’s Apostles of the Stars in the last volume, they ended up on the island where Creed’s secret hideout is at and they meet up with even more of Creed’s Apostles of the Stars members! While Train fights Maro and River fights Preta, whose power is to cause objects to melt whenever he touches them, Eve ends up confronting Leon, the young boy who can whip up powerful wind storms.
Can Eve win against Leon and can Train and River defeat the other Apostles of the Stars?
Kentaro Yabuki has done a brilliant job with this volume as while part of the story focuses on Train and River defeating some of the members of the Apostles of the Stars, the real focus in this volume was on Eve fighting Leon. I loved the way that Eve manages to show the readers that she is capable of handling herself in this situation as it shows a great growth in her character as she learns how to handle problems by herself without the help of Train or Sven. I also loved the fact that we finally get to see Train, Sven and Eve confront the Apostles of the Stars since in the previous volumes, we have seen Train, Sven and Eve talk about the Apostles of the Stars, but we never seen them interact with them before and it was great seeing the tension being built up between the Apostles of the Stars and Train, Eve and Sven as they fight each other to decide the fate of Creed. Kentaro Yabuki’s artwork is, as always, gorgeous to look at and probably the best parts of the artwork were of the fighting scenes between the Sweeper Alliance and the Apostles of the Stars as the scenes were extremely well drawn and also intense to look at as we see Train and the others getting beaten up by the Apostles of the Stars even though they eventually beat the members of the Stars back.
For anyone who does not like reading much violence in manga, this volume does have a couple of violent scenes where the characters are constantly fighting each other and they would get hurt severely.
Overall, “Black Cat Volume 15: Eve Attacks” is a fantastic volume for fellow “Black Cat” fans and if you are a huge fan of Eve, then this is definitely the volume that you must pick up!
I'm gonna do it! I'm gonna finish this series!! ((aka I read the previous volume months ago and kinda forgot what happened but I'm gonna binge the rest of the series this week hopefully))
I'm not generally a big shonen fight fan but I like these characters so much and I wanna see how they beat Creed in the end. This volume was just a lot of fightin' but I liked the pairings, I feel like some thought was put into them: like Train is fighting the gravity-manipulating villain, so how can his bullets reach him before they hit the ground? and the sweeper who uses his fists is fighting a villain who rots whatever he touches, so how can he hit him without touching him? and the kids are fightin', cause they have that in common, that they're kids. lol
Leon is so cute, just a lil guy, with a lil tantrum. Guess he learned his lesson not to underestimate anyone based on their gender!
The mermaid tranformation felt more like an excuse to draw Eve as a mermaid than an actual sense-making decision. But it's cool that it's canon? Eve can truly do anything she sets her mind to, she's a beast.
I don't like Kevin, what's the point of this character. He has zero personality.
I need more Sven in my life, so I'mma read the next volume real quick now.
Train left underground organization Chronos to live his life on his own terms - two years later, he's working with his partner Sven as a sweeper. The action scenes are well-choreographed, the art is good, and the plot is easy to follow and (mostly) believable. When Eve takes on Leon, she's also taking on his very gendered view of her -- Woohoo!
Unfortunately, Sven brings those stereotypes back a bit when he rescues Silphy. Personally I think Sven's character would be stronger without all of those "I'm a gentleman" comments, but his relationship with Eve is great. Also not a huge fan of this cover art - it borders on sexualizing Eve, who's still 12. Eek.
But great action scenes! This series is worth reading based on the action/dialogue balance alone.
This volume totally caught me by surprise. There's a small fight for Train that's pretty cool, and a couple of extra guests arrive to join the party, but the real star of this volume is Eve who finally gets a chance to show the audience what she's made of! Her fight against Leon is one of the best I've ever read in any shonen-manga. On par with the showdown in volumes 15-16 of Flame of Recca.
Pretty neat book! I just don't understand stand why more people don't read it! I'm so lonely in my Black Cat Fan club world. My sister is that only one here...
I'm starting to miss Creed. I hope he's in the next book!
