glimpse at an empire where death always lurks and where keeping slaves/ slave trading is illegal.
Then there are also magi.
And ghosts. These ghosts, though, are trained killers.
Ghosts and magi, though, do not mix. At all!
Which is why the plot of Ghost Spells by author Jonathan Moeller is so surprising. Sometimes they can and do mix...to great consternation and with deathly results too.

Always a good story
I like the characters, not the "bad" guys although they are good. ;^} I like the balance the author sets for the challenges to the hero vs hope. I like the story. I think I have every one of Moeller's books.
