In the New Life Program booklet, you will find the road map to escape from the cycle of harmful substance addiction. Beyond the inspiring 13 Statements themselves, this booklet offers helpful examples and explanations to guide you to live your best life free from substances.
This life-changing tool to address the specific needs of women in recovery from substance use disorders (SUDs) comes from noted sociologist Dr. Jean Kirkpatrick, the founder of Women for Sobriety (WFS). It is the very first women’s self-help program for addiction.
Jean Kirkpatrick, Ph.D. (1923-2000) was dynamic, intelligent, energetic and the first woman to receive the Fels Fellowship Award from the University of Pennsylvania. She also suffered from a severe but undiagnosed drinking problem and had a history of suicide attempts.
During her doctoral work at the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Kirkpatrick came to grips with her alcohol problem, joined Alcoholic Anonymous (AA), and was sober for three years. But along with receiving the Fels Award came a return to use. Jean continued drinking for 13 more years.
Eventually Dr. Kirkpatrick returned to AA, but found she no longer identified with that model to address her alcoholism. It was then she realized there was a need for a program that would speak to the specific challenges women face in recovery, issues such as low self-esteem, shame, and guilt. After about a year sober, she set about establishing the first self-help recovery organization for women, Women for Sobriety, Inc. Following the ideas and philosophies she used for her own recovery, she created what is known as the New Life Program.
Kirkpatrick authored several books for women A Fresh Start, Goodbye Hangovers, Hello Self-Help for Women, On the Road to Sell Recovery, and New Help for Alcoholic Women. She also appeared on “The Today Show,” “Good Morning America,” and “The Phil Donahue Show.” Dr. Kirkpatrick became known as an expert on addiction in women, and twice testified before Senate subcommittees on the special needs of women in recovery.
