The first volume was wonderful, but necessarily expository. It laid the groundwork for this new series' setting and characters. Volume 2 is where GHOST AND WITCH hits its stride. We're into the episodic, character-driven storytelling now, and it's magnificent.

What sets Yamazaki apart is her refusal to flatten her characters into archetypes. These are three-dimensional beings with complicated motivations, capable of selfish acts that may harm even the ones they care about. Growth isn't guaranteed here. Characters' setbacks, irreversible mistakes, and poignant revelations are so much more impactful because they aren't assured. The relationships and friendships carry real baggage and history, which makes every moment of connection feel earned rather than inevitable.

And the mythology! Selkies, mermaids, púcai, brownies, witches; all the coolest Irish myths we know and love, woven into longer plot threads that are just beginning to unspool. I can only hope this gets adapted into anime. An animated version would be absolutely mind-blowing. Crunchyroll, I'll be waiting.

If you loved THE ANCIENT MAGUS' BRIDE for its emotional complexity and lush folklore, GHOST AND WITCH is delivering that same sort of magic in a new locale. Highly recommended.
