Using step-by-step tutorials, this book shows the amatuer photographer and hobbyist how to express his or her deepest secrets by using Photoshop Elements to digitally enhance and manipulate photographs.
This book isn't for everyone, but it does give you fair warning. The Totally Tasteless part of the title refers not only to the cheesy effects he shows you how to do, but also to the political commentary Wally Wang includes as part of the explanation. If you're someone who would still be willing to publicly thank President Bush for his courageous leadership, just skip this book, no point to raising your blood pressure.
Although there is political commentary, this book is mostly about two things: having fun with Photoshop Elements and subtle education.
Photoshop Elements (PE) is now coming out with version 7. Each new version provides new tools for making dazzling effects. Totally Tasteless Photoshop Elements is most likely based on version 1, but the techniques it shows still apply. Instead of showing detailed, step by step screen shots and menu items, this book discusses PE's features in general terms and provides before and after examples. For most cases, these examples still apply. This book does a good job of showing ways you can goof around with your pictures and have some fun.
None of other titles I have advised me that I could use photomerge as a quick way to create a photo collage. It's not the most high quality way to do this, but it's certainly the easiest, and lets me know if I want to chase the idea further.
Most of us have probably seen those tabloid pictures showing Bill Clinton talking with Aliens. In the course of discussing how we can doctor pictures for our amusement, Wally Wang points out cases where mainstream news sources like Time and Newsweek have utilized less obvious manipulations on the images they've provided. Seeing is believing, but it's good to check on this now and then. Amongst the sometimes heavy handed political commentary, Wally does a good job of subtly rolling this point in.
I just can't help myself, this book was just so much tacky fun. I love to play with photos. Oh, go ahead, add a few crowsfeet to that photo of your mother-in-law when she's fractious. Add a wart to the chin of an ex-spouse! My sis was on a diet, so I added her face to a head of lettuce, and made her a birthday card substituting her face for Mona Lisa's. As for myself, I chose to be a svelt Venus, rising from the sea. Along with the fun stuff is a lot of good info for tweaking and improving photos using Photoshop Elements. I'll grow up someday, just not today!
