About the author

Juli Min is a writer and editor based in Shanghai. She studied Russian and comparative literature at Phillips Academy and Harvard University, and she holds an MFA in fiction from Warren Wilson. She was the founding editor of The Shanghai Literary Review and served as its fiction editor from 2016 to 2023. Her first novel, Shanghailanders, was published in May 2024 by Spiegel & Grau (US) and Dialogue Books (UK), with translations acquired in Japanese, Spanish, Norwegian, German, and Arabic.

Nearly 4 ⭐️ but not quite. Good story and interesting concept—story moved backward in time. Interesting character studies but you had to stretch belief sometimes—wealthy family doing survival vacations? Weird. There were several scenes that seemed just too much, contrived—the secret door to a stash of treasure, the kid aiming the gun at the father (would Leo, as uptight and exacting as he is, really not secure a loaded gun?). I will, however, be looking forward to Min’s future novels.
