THIRDS #2

Blood & Thunder

Rate this book
7 hrs 50 mins

When a series of bombs go off in a Therian youth center, injuring members of THIRDS Team Destructive Delta and causing a rift between agents Dexter J. Daley and Sloane Brodie, peace seems unattainable. Especially when a new and frightening group, the Order of Adrasteia, appears to always be a step ahead. With panic and intolerance spreading and streets becoming littered with the Order's propaganda, hostility between Humans and Therians grows daily. Dex and Sloane, along with the rest of the team, are determined to take down the Order and restore peace, not to mention settle a personal score. But the deeper the team investigates the bombings, the more they believe there's a more sinister motive than a desire to shed blood and spread chaos.

Discovering the frightful truth behind the Order's intent forces Sloane to confront secrets from a past he thought he'd left behind for good, a past that could not only destroy him and his career, but also the reputation of the organization that made him all he is today. Now more than ever, Dex and Sloane need each other, and, along with trust, the strength of their bond will mean the difference between justice and all-out war.

I didn't skim that much this time around. I took my time and enjoyed it. Sloane and Dex are so hot together, and I love how CC have written how Dex lights up Sloane's soul so good. You can feel Sloane healing piece by piece.
New Rating: 3.5/3 stars.

Second re-read: 04.03.2020
I'm only re-reading Sloane and Dex's scenes and skimming/skipping the rest of it (the information and such as I already know them). Why you ask? I'm struggling with focusing and I'm kinda taking it out on the book. Not fair, I know...
New Rating: 3 stars.

This series is actually good. It kinda had it all; friendships, family, action, sexy times, depth, funny scenes, great characters and good chemistry. It's strange how I don't love it more than I do. Probably because for one, it's long, two, it has a lot of information. Maybe that's why? Who knows. What I do know is that I adore Sloane and Dex together. It's awesome watching reading them get closer and their relationship growing in depth. Also, I don't know why, but that dream Sloane had at 17% into the book, made me shred a tear for some reason. It didn't the first time reading it though... On to the next re-read!
New Rating: 3.5/3 stars.

First read review:
The second book in the series still centers around the Defense Agent (used to be a homicide detective; the Human Police Force) Dexter ‘Dex’ ‘Rookie’ J. Daley (33) and his Team Leader Sloane Brodie (37), who's also his jaguar Therian partner. It picks up four months after the first one left off - 8 months since Dex joined Destructive Delta. The team is looking for the whereabouts of The Order of Adrasteia; a group who believes Therians are abominations and should be wiped from existence. The Order had declared war against the THIRDS by executing a THIRDS agent at the end of book one and it's causing chaos and tention between humans and Therians, and time is running out. I'm glad we got another book regarding Dex and Sloane as I felt the first one didn't gives anything close to a closure for the two.
The guy loved playing hard to get. Dex was fine with that. He loved a good challenge, especially when that challenge concerned his grumpy, sexy Team Leader, and as of four months ago, lover.

The thing is, these two books aren't bad. It's filled with action, friendship, betrayals, a hint of heartbreak and team work. However, something big is actually missing for me to really, really like it, and I believe it has to do with the fact that there has been two book centering around Sloane, and we didn't really get to know him - his past - until the end of this book. Not even Dex knew. And this was a problem because there was such a huge space between Dex/us and Sloane. Their connection wasn't - isn't still for me - complete. I had hoped that we'd get more closure for the two in this one, but I still feel like they have a long way to go and this troubles me as I think this was the last book centering around them?
From what he’d learned, Unit Alpha was the most popular unit at the THIRDS. It was also the most dangerous and the most difficult to get into.

Other Characters:
Isaac Pearce, a Homicide Detective. His brother, Gabe, who had been a THIRDS agent and died a year ago; had been killed by a Therian informant. Though that proved to be a lie; Isaac had killed his own brother. Gabe used to be Sloane human partner. Sloane and Gabe were sleeping together. A year before Gabe died, it had gotten pretty serious. They’d been together four years.
“I know Dr. Abraham Shultzon was a First Gen doctor. Yours, Ash’s, as well as dozens upon dozens of other First Gen Defense agents we employ. The Chief of Therian Defense is well aware of the danger Dr. Shultzon is in, and in turn, the danger the THIRDS is in. Isaac Pearce vowed he would destroy the THIRDS, and he’s discovered a way to do that. Well, I don’t know if it would destroy us, but it would certainly discredit us, and throw enough red tape to unleash chaos within our ranks. It seems that’s why he kidnapped Morelli.”

Anthony ‘Tony’ ‘Sarge’ ‘Sergeant’ ‘Sir’ Maddock, Dex's adoptive father and a sergeant at the Therian-Human Intelligence Recon Defense Squadron otherwise known as the THIRDS.
→ THIRDS Destructive Delta Agent Tech Expert, Cael Maddock (27?), Dex's adoptive little brother and a cheetah Therian. Rosa Santiago, his human partner and Destructive Delta's crisis negotiator and medic. Both Recon agents.
Ash Keeler, a lion Therian and Destructive Delta's entry tactics and CQC expert, and his human partner, Julietta ‘Letty’ Guerrera, their weapons expert. Ash was also Sloane's best friend.
Ethan Hobbs, a Therian Tiger and Destructive Delta's sniper and his human partner, Calvin ‘Cal’ Summers, their demolitions expert. ‘Rafe’ (the oldest) and ‘Seb’, Hobbs’s big brothers, both were Defense agents as well and Therians.
→ Dr. Nina Bishop, THIRDS Destructive Delta’s medical examiner and a human.
→ Dr. Hudson Colbourn, THIRDS chief medical examiner, and a Canis Lupus Therian.
→ Lieutenant Sonya Sparks, a THIRDS and a Cougar Therian. Partner to human Tony.
Louis ‘Lou’ Huerta, Dex's ex-boyfriend of four years.
→ THIRDS Agent Taylor, Team Leader of Beta Pride or Beta Ambush (?), and a Therian.
→ THIRDS Agent Stone, Team Leader of Beta Pride or Beta Ambush (?), and a Therian?

“You said it yourself. No matter what, I don’t lose faith in you. Well, maybe it’s time you have some faith in me. You know me. Whatever happens between us, you know I wouldn’t walk away from you, so please, don’t walk away from me.”

Quick basic facts:
Genre: - (Adult) Paranormal Romance (M/M).

*3.5 stars*

This book is the emo, brooding version of the bad-ass shifter world seen in Hell & High Water. Good thing I like angst and pouting, needy men! Rawr!

"Blood & Thunder" continues the story of Dex and Sloane as they try to battle the wacked-in-the-head Issac. *Cue evil-sounding "Bwa-ha-ha-haaaa"*

While there is a good amount of action in this book, the main focus of the plot is the relationship between Dex and Sloane. There is a ton of drama in this one. A ton. Most of the angst comes from Sloane and his issues with his past relationship with Gabe, his upbringing, and his conflicted feelings for Dex. Poor Dex is thrown along for the ride, and I swear that boy has the patience of a saint.

My favorite character is still Dex. He made this book for me with his hilariously snarky one liners, killer jokes, and adorable personality. I'm team Dex, all the way.

Is it weird that one of my favorite parts of this book was the sexual tension between Cael and Ash? I mean, I'm literally salivating for their story. That will be one EPIC gay-for-you bonanza! Please, Charlie Cochet, don't make me wait too long!

All in all, this book was enjoyable and fun but not really a stand-out for me. I think the story ended in an anticlimactic, bad-guy monologue-y kind of way and I wasn't a huge fan of the misunderstandings peppered throughout. However, this series is funny, smart, and has a lot of potential. I'll be reading the next one, for sure!

And I loved the way Dex and Sloane got closer. Although Sloane was a bit of a stubborn ass at times. But there were some tender moments that were totally worth it.

I couldn't leave the house this morning until I finished this 2nd book. I'm officially hooked on this series and so excited I have so many more books ahead of me to enjoy.

I just can't figure it out. Where was I when this awesome series first released? Why has it taken me so long to finally read it. I wish I had a "tbr hammer to the head" buddy who would hound me if I was putting off one of these gems. ---currently accepting applications--- ;-)

Reread May 2020

These two are still going to be the death of me. Love this series.

Reread June 2019

I do love this series. #teamdex

Originally read August 2018

Oh man...I've said before dead exes are not my thing and in the beginning of this one I was ready to throw in the towel. Sloane pissed me off royally. Now, I'm not unsympathetic to his grief but when I love a character like Dex and someone like Sloane hurts him I want to get out my rusty knives. Hmmmm....reminds me of another hero *cough* Sam-fucking-Kage *cough* that I'm certainly ready to stab to death.

But I hung in there and kept going. I do believe Sloane feels differently about Dex. You can see it in his actions (at times when he's not being a dick) and in this thoughts (when he's not consumed by guilt). But I'm ready for him to move on and open up to Dex more. He deserves it. He has been nothing but a great partner and friend to Sloane and everyone else on the team. I want him to have some happiness now.

Ugh...the binge continues...

OMG, these books are the shit !! I loved every single page. I'm so glad I listened to my Goodreads friends and took a chance.

Dex and Sloane are awesome and all the side-characters are amazing as well. The storyline is interesting...there is tons of action and suspense..the sexual tension is palpable and I pissed myself laughing.

In other words, it had everything I love in a book. Of course, I started the next one right after I read this one. Seriously one of the best series I've ever read. 5 stars for me.

You know how some people hate the word "moist"?
The first biggest problem I had with this book was that the word "lover" was used on every other page. "Lover" is my "moist." I feel literal ick feelings inside when someone calls their S.O. that. It reminds me of that SNL skit where the creepy old hippy couple keep calling each other that.

*visible shuddering*

Yeah. That sucked all of the hotness from this book for me.

The other thing I didn't like was that our couple from the first book was in complete angst this whole book. Sloane was an ass and Dex was putting up with it.

Yes, that's exactly Dex.

But, aside from those things, I really liked the book. We have the psycho from the last book determined to kill out the shifter race. He keeps making moves and the team keeps trying to figure out why. The problem is that this psycho is pretty smart.... smarter than them. Maybe the human race IS better than the shifters. Maybe the psycho is right. Humans for the win!

*suspicious eyes*

This book is mainly a cop-book of them trying to catch a creep with occasional scenes of sex and angst. The angst is worth it in the end because the characters in this series are great. I am totally invested in all of them getting happy endings.

4.5--Singing--Stars!!

I think I loved this one even more than the last one.....but I still feel like it leans more heavily on the suspense side vs the romance side!

But I LOVE all of the supporting characters, they more than make up for it....and the storyline is exciting and different!

I was expecting a ton of.....

But surprisingly, it wasn't near as angsty as i thought it would be. Or maybe it was just the kind of angst I could handle....not juvenile and annoying!

I was hoping for a bit more...

There wasn't too much shifting going on this book!

There was still plenty of.....

The banter amongst the group is one of my favorite things about this series.

The steam factor was a bit higher in this one, which I hope just gets better and better as the series goes on!

I'm hooked!

I absolutely ADORED "Blood & Thunder"!!!!

I just want to squeeze this book in my arms and never let it go!

Everything was perfect!!

And Dex?

There's too much in my head to be able to write anything coherent!! (My mind is like: I loved that, and that, and that, and that and I'll just end up copy-paste-ing the whole book and that would be taking the spoiler thing too far.)

Can't wait for the next one! When is that exactly? Tomorrow?(asks with the heart in her eyes)

The story was as good as book 1 but still, I didn’t like Slone! Well, I don’t know exactly why! Maybe because I think he loves Gabe more than Dex!! I know he likes Dex it just I can’t feel it! And I’m really tired of him pushing Dex away! It’s not fair to Dex and Dex is too forgivable in this case! But still, I loved it! I liked the banter, the actions, their attractions! In book 1 I was intrigued to know more about Ash & Cael but in this one, I was intrigued to know about Calvin & Hobbs’ story! I know, I have to be patient but I just can’t! This team is awesome and it has so many lovable side characters! Told in dual POV, 3rd person. It’s the second installment in the "THIRDS" series and has to be read in order. Overall, it was an enjoyable read and hope you like it as well!

Another light hearted and easy listening entry featuring plenty of action, humour and romance.

The plot continues to not break any barriers and there are plenty of kind of wobbly plot points that are very Hollywood and not really grounded in reality at all. I couldn't help but have a laugh, for example, when a whole plot point revolved around the villain doing something suspicious whilst in an elevator at a big corporate building but the THIRDS team had no idea what he got up to cause there was no camera in the lift....what lift in a corporate building doesn't have cameras now days? The answer is almost all of them and there is some security person out there who has seen you pick out a wedgie when you have thought you are in private. And like, the book addressed it but ..... you recruit a homicide detective with 10 years experience investigating crimes and no military experience and you *check notes* put him in the Tactical Response role and not the role that investigates crimes? Lol, I mean it makes for a more exciting read, but it's just so silly goose.

And look.... I get that Sloan has a lot of baggage and trauma, the dudes been through it and I want to be empathic to what he's been through, but the way he spent most of this taking Dex completely for granted and being super hot and cold was driving me kind of crazy. I'm glad that Dex called him out on his behaviour but I actually wish Dex wasn't quite so sweet and understanding and that he made Sloan work a bit harder for his forgiveness and the right to be in his life, cause currently Sloan is punching way above his weight class having Dex into him.

I'm enjoying learning more about the side characters backstories. I'm especially hoping they don't stuff up Ash and Caels story.

Also.....I could never escape that the villian was kind of super gay for Dex? Like he kept saying how he wanted his loyalty and dedication but just ended up coming off like a jealous spurned lover? I'm a little confused why the book flirted with the homosexual subtext that he was attracted to Dex but never really committed the whole way when it's literally a book filled with other MM relationships? Lol

Anyway, these audiobooks remain a smooth brain balm and I'm having a good time with them. (lol I hate this cover though, what's wrong with old mates face 😂😂)

Dex is more Dex.
Ash is more Ash.
Sloane is just fucked up.
Oh, and Cash!

Charlie Cochet is a trickster! She's lured me into this world with gifts of humor and charming characters, and then she's waylaid me with unexpected anguish. In other words, I love it!

THE CHARACTERS

Sloane could see Dex going into "detective mode" every time he opened a file. It made him once again question whether Dex would be happier in Recon.

Sloane Brodie - As Team Leader, Sloane has to keep everyone safe, but ghosts from his past test his strength and resolve. Sloane broken is crushing.

Wherever his team went, Dex seemed to pick up a fan following. Something about the guy fascinated Humans and Therians alike. Sloane was still trying to work out what it was. Especially since the guy was...well, kinda weird. Then again, crazy had a way of attracting crazy.

Dexter J. Daley (Dex) - No one can push Sloane's buttons like Dex. Even when he's done something right, he's causing friction. Dex in action is thrilling though.

For all the THIRDS' rules on fraternizing, the place was incestuous.

Special Mention -
Cael & Ash, Calvin & Hobbs. Or - Cash and Cobbs - respectively.

THE STORY

As the chase for bad-guy Issac continues, Dex makes a hero maneuver against orders that really pisses Sloane off. But why? It was the right thing to do. Sloane decides to be hard headed, Dex decides to keep his head down, and the rest of the world explodes around them.

"Karaoke night!"

The bro-hijinks in this story help to level out the heavier, harder hitting dark parts. I don't think Charlie Cochet can really ever write the "dark" stuff (she's just too kind), but she definitely paints an edgy, seedy picture showing how bad the ugly parts of society can be.

I'm impressed with the balance and contrast achieved here. If you look you'll see that Cochet has created a world parallel to ours in which bigots are Therian (shifter) haters and it brings into high-def just how ugly that sort of hatred really is.

THE WRITING

I knew going into this series that it was supposed to have humor, but I wasn't really sure that Charlie Cochet could pull it off to the level that was hyped. My apologies to Charlie; she has certainly surprised me. Why did I have any doubts? I've always found a certain delight in reading her works. She always brings wonder, excitement and brightness. But this time, she has slammed me with her humorous wit.

In my (rushed) review of book 1, here, I mentioned the monumental world building that was done to give this series a huge presence. In book 2 I think that detail was given over to the development of the characters, Sloane in particular. Yippee for me, 'cus I'm a Sloane girl. The focus has not really been on the shifting, but rather on personalities and struggles and intriguing characteristics.

I think you'll find you'll be hooked by the humor, but will want to stay for the characters' charms. I know I will.

~ ~ ~

I would like to thank Charlie Cochet and Dreamspinner Press for providing me with an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.

It's been eight months since Dex joined the THIRDS and four months since he became Sloane's lover. It turned out he's exactly what the team needed. He showed them it was okay to keep on living without their fallen teammate and he slowly started to earn their trust.

Sloane is strugling with his past and moving on from Gabe. He won't talk to Dex about his feelings and it hurts his partner. Still, Dex is patient, he gives Sloane time and doesn't ask any more of him.

Besides relationship and character development, there's a good amount of action. In the previous book we got to know that Isaac is the villain, who wants to destroy the THIRDS. Now Destructive Delta tries to find him and stop him at all costs. There are also some funny scenes, like karaoke night, and hot sexy times. Plus, we learn a little bit more about Calvin and Hobbs as well as Cael and Ash.

Dex is still one of my favorite characters. I just adore his humorous personality. I loved to see how much progress Dex and Sloane made. They both were stubborn at times and had their bad moments, but they always tried to work things out.

I really enjoyed this installment and I can't wait for the stories of the other pairings.

4.5 - This is such an easy, fun series to read. It’s hitting the spot nicely. I’m generally on the fence when it comes to books labelled as comedy/action/romance but this is really working! (It’s everything I was hoping for with the Mike Bravo Ops series by another author which didn’t deliver for me). And it has the added bonus of the big cats cool shifting thing. Definitely recommend so far. Bonus points for the effort the author has put into her website with a whole section dedicated to this series and clearly well thought out world-building and characters - https://charliecochet.com/thirds/

Don’t read if you’re a diehard stickler for accuracy when it comes to the agents professions. Like when one of the guys partners gets hurt and they just hop off the job and go in the ambulance with them? Ha! Agents running into things without backup? The fraternisation rules that don’t really seem to exist? Don’t think too hard, just enjoy.

Second installment in the THRIDS series!
Check out my rather *cough* extensive review of #1 Hell & High Water here. ;)

Actually, I could copy-paste most of that review here, because just like the first book this book is entirely Dexter too. He is no less awesome than in the first.

"Damn, he was cute. Pale blue eyes shifted up and Dex cocked his head to one side, that brilliant smile stealing Sloane's breath away."
Sloane

I loved seeing further development between Sloane and Dex.
Sloane had his own demons to fight on top of Isaac in this book and he was an ass some of the time.

Dex was like...

Dex is still Dex and there were plenty of laugh out load moments.
Including a hysterical night out on the towm with the whole team!
A drunk Dex? Definitely memorable. :D

The plot is a bit better in this one in my opinion. Thankfully there was no massive info dump like in #1. That being said there are still lots of excessive descriptions, which continue to bug me. :( *skipped through*

I have one big issue with the plot towards the end though. The plot moved towards the crescendo. Really good suspense. But then, in my opinion, the major

The ending was kinda "meh" after that, since I got a bit "well, got yourself into this position, being stupid... so..."

I'm looking forward to the next installment! I want more Dex and Sloan! I want more of the other guys too!

And yes! This is just as good as the first time. Absolutely fantastic entertainment.
As for Dex and Sloane ... swoon galore! And more yeses to all that hilarious banter.

original review

Really enjoyed part 2 of this saga which takes place four months after the first book.
So what is this one all about?

Dex is Dex ....

He's like an excited puppy that never sits still.

On the outside he makes people laugh and smile, showing his mischievous side, but he is just as vulnerable as anyone on the inside. Particularly when it comes to Sloane, who seems unable to let Gabe go and embrace what he's got with Dex.

I adored how much patience Dex has and how much compassion he is showing Sloane, something the other man is stunned about again and again.

But Dex is only human and hurt is creeping in whenever Sloane pushes him away. He is on the verge of giving up on Sloane admitting that what they have is 'more'. And I can't blame him. Because Sloane is torn so much between guilt, grief and want, he is blowing A LOT of hot and cold.

Soooooo ..... a heapful of relationship development and tons of stuff to work through for Sloane. All of which I totally adored. And not to forget the wicked humour of the writing!

As for the plot ... archenemy Isaac inevitably appears on the scene and causes havoc. However I felt that the last part in the book was a bit underdeveloped. There was a lot more scope for baddies being evil.

Saying that - this is pure enjoyment.
And Dex and Sloane are swoon-worthy!
As are Ash and Cael ...

Book 3 - here I come.

You know the feeling you want to share your love for a book but you can't find the right words for it? That's how I feel about Blood & Thunder!

"Man, this team is incestuous."

While Hell & High Water did a great job to introduce us to the THIRDS and their world, Blood & Thunder is an awesome sequel which shows us more of the relationships within Destructive Delta and of cause the development between Sloane and Dex.

I adored Dex as much as in Hell & High Water with all his quirks and his smart mouth! But we also get a look behind his cheeky behavior. Which makes me love him even more.

(I imagine Dex much like his art-work-self on www.thirdshq.com ! Though I got the feeling, I won't find gifs with it...)

Sloane has a hard time struggleing with his past and figuring out about the depth of his feelings for Dex.
There were times I wanted to hug and cuddle him, times I wanted to throttle him and times my heart hurt for him.

(I can't find a sad gif of Joe Manganiello. So Jensen has to cover that!)

Who got lots of sympathy-points for me was Ash! Yes, he was his known douchebag-self most of the time.
"He's [Dex] like an excited puppy that never sits still, which makes me want to punch him."
Sloane peered at his friend. "You want to punch puppies?"
"I'd never punch a puppy. What's wrong with you? Dex I'd punch."

But he showed vulnerability and that he cares for Sloane as a friend.
I understand their friendship much more now!

And there was some of this.

And some more of this.

Now I'll have to wait for November to read Rack & Ruin...

I've been staring at the edit review page for a while, telling myself that starting with WOW would not be an option. But to hell with it. Holy shit, this book!!! WOW!!! I simply ADORED it!!!

The first book of the series was fantastic–my review is proof enough of how much I loved it–but Blood & Thunder was even better than Hell & High Water!

While Hell & High Water was all about world building, this installment focuses on character development. It shines some light on the relationships Destructive Delta has as a team, and also on the individual couples forming inside the team.

"Man, this team is incestuous." (Haha. True that! And I'm loving it! :D)

I am utterly smitten with Dex! I mean, it's hard not to be, since he's sweet and hilarious. I admired his patience in this book, and the fact that he wouldn't lose his faith in Sloane, no matter how many times he got pushed away or was kept in the dark. We also get a glimpse of the guy Dex is behind the cheerful exterior, and what he's been through.

Sloane has a lot on his plate, and the burden on his shoulders keeps getting heavier every day. Keeping his past secret from Dex is taking its toll on him, and he acts like a major asshole because of it. When he finally told his story, I really felt for him, and was glad he eventually saw that he wasn't alone anymore.

Something else I enjoyed was seeing the team members interact and grow closer, accepting Dex as their own. Oh, and I can't wait to see how the relationship between Calvin & Hobbs/Ash & Cael develops!!! I love all of them!

There were two scenes that particularly stood out to me. The first was the one where Dex and Sloane–in his Therian form–were at that rookie training, and Dex gave his oh-so-funny lessons on Felid behavior. And the second was, of course, the karaoke night at the bar! Dex singing 80s songs and getting drunk, Sloane being all jealous and possessive, Ash & Cael being adorable, the team's 'fuck, marry, kill' game, the sexy bartender... It was just FUN!

Frankly, Charlie Cochet gets all the stars. All. Of. Them.

[fyi: every human agent (Dex) at The THIRDS is partnered with a Therian agent (Sloane) - the ones that can shift into an animal form]

“Agent Daley, what can you tell us about what you’ve learned since being partnered with a jaguar Therian?” […]

“All right, listen up. This is serious stuff. Lesson number one: If your 240-pound Felid partner with a jaw strong enough to pierce your skull with his fangs in one bite wants to rub up against your leg, you take it and you like it.

Lesson number two: Don’t piss off your Felid partner and then think you’re safe by jumping in Sparta’s Olympic-sized swimming pool. Jaguar Therians love swimming, and they’re better at it than you. No good can come of it, and you’ll end up losing your swim trunks in the process and have to walk to the locker room naked, covering your boy bits, and nearly giving the janitorial staff a heart attack. Your fellow agents will take pictures of you, and by the time your shift is over, your ass will have gone viral and seen more action than you ever will.

Lesson number three: Jaguar Therians are patient, crafty, and you will never see them coming. They’re masters of skulking and pouncing. Just because you think you’ve gotten away with something doesn’t mean you have. Your partner will wait months if he has to for the perfect moment to strike. He will get his revenge. So you thought attaching a cheesy 1980s Dionne Warwick song to one of his case files and disabling the audio function on his desk so he couldn’t stop the hellish harmonica would be funny? Think again. Because five months later, while you’re in the middle of field training, surrounded by scores of Felid Therian agents in their Therian form, you’ll nearly faint from the fear of having all of them charge you at once. You’ll try to run, but you won’t escape. They’ll knock you over, and you’ll suddenly realize that your partner has stuffed catnip into every pocket, every piece of equipment, even your socks, and then you’ll be rolled up in a fetal position while you’re being pawed and rubbed up against by over a dozen Felids, before you get passed around like a giant Felid doobie. It’s not fun.”

Everyone broke into laughter, and Dex shook his head, putting a hand up. “Laugh all you want, but I’m telling you, if you have a Felid partner, you are screwed. You thought your neighbor’s cat was the devil incarnate? Guess what? He ain’t got nothin’ on your partner. And remember, just because your partner can’t maim or kill you, doesn’t mean he won’t make you suffer. Oh and your Felid partner will not be scared off by the rustling of a plastic bag. All it will do is piss him off. Shiny things, laser pointers, and a giant box may occasionally distract him. They love boxes.”

Dr. Eldridge picked his jaw up off the floor. “Um, thank you, Agent Daley, for that… informative briefing. You may resume your seat.”

***I know this is a serious junk of quote I used here, but I promise that it doesn’t spoil the story in any way.

I’m still laughing my ass off about this *lmaoooo
No shit, there were so many ultra funny laugh-out-loud scenes in here it was hard to keep it together. This book gets five stars for the fun factor alone. But also for the story. And for this amazing team.

I’m off to the next one now to swoon over Dex & Sloane a little more. ♡

4 STARS!
Now, more than ever, he wanted this.
Loved it! And yes, if you were wondering, my illicit affair with Agent Dexter J Daley is now in full-swing! He's still hanging out at the top of my all-time best book boyfriends list.

This installment was so funny! I laughed my butt off. :D

But it also had its fair share of serious and poignant moments as Dex tries to move his relationship with Sloane forward and Sloane resists.
Nothing short of the Jaws of Life could get the guy to open up, leaving Dex to work things out through a series of elimination and guessing games.
Despite their problems, these two are pretty fabulous together.

Book 3 here I come!

I still adore Dex even though he’s a doormat when it comes to Sloane. I get that Sloane had a tough past but he treats Dex like shit for pretty much the entirety of this book. My stars are for Dex and his sense of humor along with a good storyline and the action scenes.

I was in two minds about continuing on with this series. But I’m glad I did.
These boys have won me over and it’s straight onto the next book for me.

SINFULLY SEXY MONIQUE & MACKY JOINT REVIEW

Monique: After the end of Hell & High Water the status quo between the humans and the Therians is sent into chaos… with THIRDS right smack, bang in the middle of the mayhem. This second book in the series takes us to another level where the secrets of the past threaten the future, not only for the Human and Therian citizens, but also for our two main characters Sloane and Dex, and the Destructive Alpha team as a whole.

We previously met Isaac Pearce, former HPF detective and now the leader of the newly formed Order of Adrasteia, in book #1, who in my opinion is quite frankly bat shit crazy, with a God complex to rid the earth of Therians, who he deems an abomination. His hatred against them fuelled by vengeance towards Sloane, the man he blames for the death of his brother and Sloane’s former lover, Gabe.

Isaac is taunting them, in a game of cat and mouse, manipulating their every move, frustrating the THIRDS who are trying to track down the fucker and establish his game plan...

Macky: The end of Hell & High Water was not so much a cliffhanger ending, but definitely a very strong 'Watch this space!' vibe, that opens book #2 up to a spectrum of thrilling scenarios that push the story forward in many ways and there's no doubt Charlie Cochet pulls all the stops out again as the storyline she chooses to lead us and the team into this time, is one hell of an exciting ride!

Monique: And WHAT a ride it was… Holy cheesy snacks and gummy bears Macky! I was totally flying on adrenaline from the abundance of testosterone and high octane action brought to us through the vivid imagery Charlie Cochet manages to convey through words alone. Not only is she a credible author but she also happens to be an excellent writer. I don’t know about you, but I’m buzzing with excitement!

Macky: "ROGER THAT" ...Monique, "OVER!" Ooh look! I'm getting all THIRD'y and in the mode! Haha...no, seriously I have to agree, that was another most excellent piece of writing from Charlie and yes, I'm buzzing too.

Monique: "ROGER THAT!?!” …Oh lord, we’ve unleashed your inner Dex, you’re going to start spouting eighties power ballads next, I just know it! *head desk*

Macky: Monique, in the wise and wonderful words of eighties band 'Starship'... "and we can build this dream together standing strong forever, nothing's going to stop us now". **sings loudly out of tune**

Monique: *put’s ear plugs in* la la la… can’t hear you! ...and THIRD’y what’s that about?

Macky: "DUCK AND COVER!!!" (does forward roll, onto knees and holds out imaginary gun)...sorry Monique, just got dive bombed by a fly...and it was actually a banana...anyhoo, back to the review!

Monique: I think I’m beginning to understand how Sloane feels *trying not to laugh* I’ll crack on shall I! ….Hell and High Water was an excellent start to what promises to be a thrilling series, where the world building and foundations were laid perfectly for this compelling, funny, all action adventure with animated characters, all with distinct personalities and traits who have already stolen a piece of my heart. Aww… I just got a real sense of family from them. The camaraderie and banter… their loyalty to each other. Combine that with action, romance and kick ass alpha hero’s where the unit as a whole is inclusive and you have something very addictive that Charlie Cochet has very cleverly brought to life… and I love it!

Did you notice I didn’t mention the sex Macky???

Macky: Oh I feel a song coming on.."Let's get physical, physical, I wanna get get animal lets get into animal, let me hear your body talk..."

Monique: Olivia Newton John! Really!?! *THUD!*

Macky: Haha...yes really! Awww Monique...it's your fault, making me have to tell all the perps...oops sorry, I mean peeps...shoot! I'm still in THIRDS mode...that as well as some amazingly awesome action scenes and yeah, the fabulous witty banter that just snaps between them on page… we get some mouth watering smexing between Dex and Sloane, that I don't know about you M, but it had me getting all hot and bothered one minute, then all gooey and sighing the next. Awwwwww those two boys have definitely got my attention...in fact the whole gang of them are just so moreish. It's basically a matter of "What's not to like" about the whole package. I'm loving this too!

Monique: “WILCO” ...Oh God, you’ve got me at it now, and I am NOT singing eighties songs!!! Neither will I be doing anything untoward with a hoover!

Our chats have got a lot to answer for! Back to the boys, because I’m already chomping at the bit for more page time with the Destructive Alpha team! As much as I love Dex, I think I’m a Sloane gal, there’s something about strong, cool, calm and detached men with an air of power and confidence that screams ALL alpha male and just makes my tummy flutter… he calls to my inner floozy.

Macky: Well we all know your about YOUR inner floozy don't we!! And don't tell me you've never done anything untoward with a Hoover...I know all about you and the spin cycle on your washing machine!!! Hahaha...

It's a hard call for me, I think if I have to choose I'm a Dex girl, I love a man who makes me laugh and Mr Cheesy Doodle, power ballad lovin', king of the one liners, Dex makes me laugh in spades! My inner minx is telling me she wouldn't mind a roll in the hay AND a little giggle, slap and tickle with that man....well if he wasn't gay of course...there is that to consider...damn I wish I was a man!!! However I have to admit I wouldn't kick tall dark and mysterious, alpha man —I mean Jaguar— Sloane out the bed if he ever decided to come cuddle (or other stuff) one night! Dammit it Monique, you've got me talking about sex again...how do you do that!?!
