Dat het socialisme met een menselijk gezicht een poging was een nieuwe maatschappij te scheppen, die niet door sufferds werd beheerst. 211. De gebroken boom liet me passeren, omdat hij wist waarom mensen in deze dagen het land verlieten.

Angstaanjagend moet het zijn geweest.

One of the best of its kind. More incisive than Solzhenitsyn. As gruesome as Nien Cheng's "Life and death in Shanghai". A must-read for all those who still believe there is something beautiful to be found in the socialist ideal.
