Amazing story I love everything about it. I love how these two friends like each other from growing up together but life got in the way of them being together. But when time get tough and he need help she is there to help him out this is best friend to lover romance and it everything and more. I love his daughter and the little comment that she makes and she just wants her dad to be happy for once. I’m glad they both his ex wife Ij her place like why would you do to your daughter but it was a cute little story. I can’t wait to see what couple is up next.
First and foremost, this is a fun story. The romance is romancey, the characters are lovable, and the author captures life with vindictive ex-partner with startling clarity. Absolutely a 4-star story with some work, but that fact is frustratingly overshadowed by its many problems.
This book loses a star for being in desperate need of an editor. There are some major pacing and structural issues and to be completely honest, it probably could have been 15-20% shorter. There is a lot of repetition and stalling over the characters' emotional decisions, duplicated passages where it appears the author chose to expand the story but didn't appropriately edit the chapter closings, and excessively repetitive descriptions and scenes. (For example: every time Jake's vet appointments are mentioned, it's the same three or four appointment types, and every encounter with the Councilman's wife follows the exact same structure, the shift in authenticity of the relationship is mentioned at least four times per chapter in nearly the same language, and snippets of conversation are repeated multiple times in different chapters. I promise that by Chapter 34, we understand that the relationship is real.). There’s an awful lot of “when I get back, we’re going to talk about this,” but that conversation never happens. There are also tense-jumping and formatting issues. There are passages which jump from present to past tense and back again, separate from the passages that appear to be flashbacks -- which showcase the formatting issues as there is no physical delineation between past and present. The transition between time periods is jarring, even in the present-day passages where we shift forward in the story, as are the sections where text messaging is implied. This may be a symptom of poor ebook formatting and fine in the print edition, but whoever formatted it needs to revisit separators, line breaks, and spacing. It was often and startling enough, especially at the beginning, to pull me out of the story.
It loses another star for timeline discrepancies and functional inaccuracy. Moving into the last third of the book, the timeline gets very stretchy. There are large passages of time, important conversations left dangling for days, and advancement of character relationships that move faster than the passage of time could allow. Given that the whole story is supposed to take place in thirty or so days, it feels like the story doesn't fit inside those constraints. Large chunks of the story also seem to be out of place. One chapter ends with the promise of a meeting, but turns to a charity auction in the very next chapter. An auction. Which doesn't actually happen. All in all, it doesn't exactly stick the landing.
It wants to be a good book, and I desperately want to like it. It could be a great book with a little polishing, but it feels like the book was finished and immediately uploaded without any sort of revisions. The writing itself is solid and the author absolutely has a talent for storytelling, but it needs a fresh set of eyes to clear up the issues. It's a fantastic first draft and a very good example of why EVERY book needs a real editor.
I received an Advance Reader Copy from the publisher, via BookSirens. This in no way impacted on my view.
All Jake Rivers wants is for his daughter, Emily, to be happy, and for his veterinarian practice to flourish. So when the town council decide to introduce a new initiative showing they are family focused, they've got their eyes set on him. A divorced, single dad doesn't fit in with the Mill Creek narrative, and the council are out for blood. Luckily, Jake's best friend since college, Lexie Brown, will not let anything or anyone hurt Jake or Emily, and she agrees to marry him to prove he is a family man, and help get him through the next month. However, the council are being controlled by his ex, and they don't seem to be convinced by the whole charade, so Jake and Lexie step up the PDA - to the point that they are even wondering if it's fake any longer.
As soon as I saw this book on BookSirens, stating it had fake dating, single dad, friends-to-lovers, small town romance tropes, I knew I needed it. The minute it landed on my kindle I dove in, and devoured the whole book in 2 sittings - I only put it down to sleep. Jake and Lexie were the best of friends, and the insight we saw into how they were when they met in college was really good for understanding them more. There was one moment in college when they nearly kissed, but then Jake's now-ex got in the way, and they've been in the friend zone ever since. Once Jake's divorce was finalised, Lexie was there to help him and Emily get through it, and she is probably the second most important person in Emily's life after Jake. I loved seeing the family dynamic between them, and the fact it didn't actually change all that much after the wedding. They were already a family, Lexie just had a ring on to prove it. Jake's ex, Marissa, was such an awful character, and the way she treated everyone she came across - including her daughter - was horrific. The only good part of those interactions was seeing Lexie go all mama-bear on her to protect Emily. The drama was really well thought out, and I enjoyed the extended cast of characters all having a part of play. I really hope we get to see the story between Jenna and Travis because there's a lot of chemistry between them! I'll definitely be on the lookout for more books in this series.
It is a rare and delightful surprise when a debut author pens a novel with the polish and charm of a seasoned storyteller, but Elodie Ashwood does exactly that in her incredible debut, "Auction to Altar." This novel is a masterclass in the grumpy/sunshine trope, delivering a story packed with laugh-out-loud moments, sizzling chemistry, and characters who will capture your heart from the very first page.
The story centers on Jake Rivers, the town's grumpy veterinarian and a devoted single dad, whose life and career are being systematically railroaded by a meddling town council and his conniving ex-wife. Facing an ultimatum to prove he’s “family-focused” or lose his clinic, he finds an unexpected savior in Elodie, the town’s bubbly science teacher. Her wild solution—a fake marriage—sets the stage for a hilarious and heartwarming series of events. Ashwood excels at crafting Jake’s character, giving his broody exterior a sympathetic and realistic backstory that makes his eventual softening all the more rewarding.
What truly makes this story shine is the electric chemistry and sharp, witty banter between the leads. The initial "rules" of their arrangement crumble under the weight of undeniable attraction, leading to moments of explosive tension that will thrill any romance reader. Adding a layer of undeniable heart is Elodie's budding relationship with Jake’s young daughter, Emily, crafting a found-family dynamic that is both tender and believable. While the small town of Mill Creek often acts as an antagonistic force, it provides a unique backdrop for the central conflict.
"Auction to Altar" is an absolute triumph that checks all the boxes for a perfect small-town romance. With lovable characters, realistic conflict, and a romance that will leave you breathless, Elodie Ashwood has established herself as an author to watch. Romance readers, do not sleep on this one; it’s a stellar start to what is sure to be a fantastic series.

"Fake marriage? Real feelings? Small-town chaos? YES PLEASE." If you’ve ever watched a small-town bachelor auction in a Hallmark movie and thought, “What if this was messier, sexier, and way more fun?”—Auction to Altar delivers in full. I went in expecting fluff. I stayed for the spice, the sass, and the ridiculous amount of longing. There’s fake marriage. There’s one bed. There’s meddling neighbors, an ex-wife with revenge on her to-do list, and a town that never minds its business—and I devoured every second. Him: The grumpy, broody bachelor just trying to raise some money and NOT fall in love. Her: The sunshiney, sarcastic woman who accidentally bids on him and suddenly finds herself planning a fake wedding. Me: Screaming into a pillow because their chemistry?? ILLEGAL. “You were supposed to pretend,” she whispers. “Then stop looking at me like you want forever,” he growls. ✨Swoony banter ✨Enemies-to-lovers that slow burns and simmers ✨A fake marriage so convincing I almost signed a prenup ✨Small-town drama I’d sell my left sock to live in Final thoughts? I came for the auction, but I stayed for the slow kisses, emotional gut-punches, and HEA that made my cold little heart feel warm again. Mill Creek, you’ve got me hooked.
They had a moment, years ago while in college. They were best friends and one night it looked like they might cross the line, before they were interrupted. Then life happened and his college girlfriend got pregnant and they got married. So they remained friends, just friends. When his marriage fell apart she was there as a friend, helping him with his daughter. When his ex threatens his custody and the town threatens his practice, she is there. This time she agrees to marry him to help protect his family, what he didn't realize was that she was going to become an integral part of that family. This is a sweet story. They have a genuine affection for each other that has never waivered and you watch as their feelings grow and they realize the love that has always been there. They keep showing up for each other. This is a slow burn as they navigate the drama around them, but a sweet one as they build a relationship. I thought that it was a little bit longer than necessary and became a little tedious as it felt like they were both rehashing their feelings a little longer than needed for the story. They were two really sweet characters who find their happily ever after right in front of them.

Thank you to Elodie Ashwood and BookSirens for the opportunity to read an ARC of this incredible book.
Auction to Altar was absolutely delightful from start to finish. This grumpy-sunshine, friends-to-lovers, fake dating romance had me smiling the entire time.
Jake and Lexie were perfection. The way their relationship grew felt so authentic—especially watching Jake find love again after a painful divorce from his manipulative ex. Emily completely stole my heart and absolutely belongs in the “Book Kid Hall of Cuteness.” Her sweetness (and her candid comments about her “mean mummy”) melted me more than once.
The side characters were another highlight: Jenna and Travis (who I am begging to get their own enemies-to-lovers story) added so much humor, and The Hendersons—a married couple in their seventies who give hilariously unsolicited romance advice—were iconic.
I loved that there was no third-act breakup, just a beautifully paced slow burn as Jake and Lexie gradually gave in to their feelings. I also highlighted so many quotes—I know I’ll be revisiting them!
Highly recommended for romance readers who love heart, humor, and a perfect blend of tropes done right.
Okay, let me be honest, this book surprised me in the best way. It’s a super fun, warm romance with the perfect mix of fake marriage, small town drama, and some real emotional stuff. I liked how it didn’t feel too perfect, but still gave me all the feelings I wanted. Jake was one of those grumpy but soft dads who just wants to protect his daughter and his vet clinic, and Lexie was the sunshine with a little bit of sass. Their chemistry was off the charts since the very beggining. Like, seriously. Emily was adorable and her bond with Lexie gave me little heart flutters. Not gonna lie, the book could have been shorter, some parts dragged a bit, but honestly? I didn’t even care that much. I was just happy to stay in their world a bit longer. If you're into fake dating/marriage, slow burns, and towns where everyone is too involved in your business, this is your book. Thank you so much to the author for giving me the opportunity to read the book in advance, I received this for free and I'm leaving a honest review
First of all, Elodie Elwood is a debut author and that’s shocking because this book was so stinking incredible! One thing I love is good solid banter. I love a moody and broody MMC and there were just so many boxes that checked off for me while reading this.

I loved the character build up for Jake, the MMC. He is just out here doing his best in life taking care of animals after having his life and heart railroaded by his ex wife but then comes along this small assbackwards town to make his life even more complicated. You know me, I’m a small town romance self declared queen but this town needed to chill 😂 I loved Lexie and her love for Emily, Jake’s daughter. I love when a book has a family with a realistic conflict and background. I feel like this book has incredibly lovable characters and I’m really excited to see where this series goes. Romance readers, don’t sleep on this one!
Auction to Altar is a small town romance read, our favorite here at CMWK! We are small town people and live in a small town. This story resonates with me, as my own relationship with my hubby, we started as friends and now we have been married for almost 20 years! The best marriages start with friendships in my own opinion and the author wrote a great story that showcases that point. I love the fake marriage and one bed troupes and they are definetly in this book. There is also an ex-wife who just can not get it into her head that her ex-husband should be happy. The MC is also a grumpy sourpuss and the FMC is a sunny happy woman with lots of happiness to spread. Well Lexie happens to bid on Jake, who is a single dad, at a charity auction and then they both find themselves in a fake marriage situation with a young daughter hoping for the real thing. This book has all the small town details and feels in it, so go and read the book RIGHT NOW!
This story tells of two people who have torn in love since thy were in school and did not do anything about it for he married someone else, she told him to be careful not to let himself to get lost in himself for it would be a bad thing to lose his way for unhappiness with the wrong person.but now thy are married after his ex wife went all out to destroy his vet practice and to get her hands on there daughter not because she wanted her but to use her in getting her inheants from her pearnance.I would like to say thank you for all your hard work and may fortune smile 😃on you always 😁from a bookworm that loves to read
It was a good book, just a little long. It seemed to sort of drag out some parts. The idea behind it is sweet, they had a thing for each other in school, didn't act on it, he married someone else, had a child while married, divorced someone else now they have a second chance. I love how much Lexie loves Emily, Jake's daughter. This is a sweet story and a good read if you can get past the length and the slower build.

Jake and Lexie’s were college friends that almost crossed that line but got interrupted and then life threw another curve ball when his girlfriend got pregnant and he married her. Now years later Lexie is still his friend but his now ex-wife wants to take his daughter and humiliate him and have the town council involved, but Lexie won't let that happen. With a fake marriage to save his clinic and his daughter, she will do it to help. But now it feels right and good and they don’t want it to end. A forever kind of love. This is a story of two close friends entering into a fake relationship and realising as time goes by that, just maybe, what they are feeling could be real. With a conniving ex wife trying to derail everything that they are building, will she ruin all that Jake and Lexie are building. A great storyline, some funny moments, loveable characters and a gorgeous 5 year old little girl made this an enjoyable read. I’m looking forward to reading the next book in this series. Owen is the single dad, small town grumpy veterinarian. That’s until Lexie walks into the rooms he’s in. Then he lights up like Christmas. Auction to Alter is one of the best small town romances I’ve read in awhile. The banter between Owen and Lexie, their chemistry, and the way that they both truly care about one another is just on a whole different level. What was supposed to be a marriage of convivence quickly turned into very real feelings on both sides. Especially when Lexie jumps in to help Owen with his daughter. The way that she fiercely stands by his side, even when there’s so much unknown is incredible. Romance with a great story, and the bits of spice make this book one for the summer.
This was a great story. I loved watching the best friends to fake lovers to real love. The fact that the two main characters have known each other for so long as well as how they were together was just perfect. The relationship everyone else was waiting for them to see. I loved watching Lexy go from Dad's friend/ aunt figure to mommy. Reading that transition and how Emily felt through it all was just really sweet. Overall a great romance with a great ending.
OMG the man on the cover is breathtaking hot and I fell instantly in love. I found myself reading this book the entire day and I was totally addicted to Lexie and Jake, and their romance is freaking awesome to read. I would be lying if I said this book was anything less than a 10-star romance book.
Auction to Alter by Elodie Ashwood is the first book in the Men of Mill Creek Series. Lexie and Jake's story was a fun read from the beginning to the end. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Lexie and Jake have known each other since school, but like a lot of childhood romance they good their own way. Now he needs help and who better than Lexie. This story made me think of Hallmark Movies a little cheesy but something just makes you keep reading. I loved Lexie's chemistry with Jakes daughter Emily. This is a lovely easy to read enemies to more story
What a beautiful story about friends who never knew how the other truly felt about the other. When it all happens and all the obstacles they have to get through, shows them exactly what was always there. Ok, you must read to find out what happens, trust me it's worth reading.
I enjoyed auction to alter which was Jake and Lexie’s story. The characters had great chemistry. I received an early copy of the book. And voluntarily leaving this review.
