Can Julien tame bad boy Shane?

Bend Over by Brina Brady

Runaway 18-year-old Shane O'Rourke is living under the Huntington Beach Pier. He carries many secrets from his past. Shane wasn’t allowed to explore his sexuality when he lived home with his father, The Reverend. His submissive nature and desires had to remain fantasies.

Shane meets a dark stranger on the beach. Julien Callier is a Dom from Martinique and is sixteen years older than Shane. Bad boy Shane wants to win the heart of Julien Callier and become his sub. But does he really understand what Julien expects from his boy?

Julien's heart goes out to this gorgeous boy and he takes him under his wing, grooming him to be his sub. Julien is determined to let Shane experience the good life, even financing his education, but he’s challenged at every turn by Shane’s rebellious nature.

When Shane’s defiant behavior threatens to come between them for good, Julien has to act fast to teach Shane the meaning of real submission.
Can Julien tame the bad boy? Can Shane give up his old ways of stealing, lying, and using drugs? The playroom is open.

We can say that Brina occupies a unique niche, different than those of all the other authors of BDSM gay romances. It is true that her doms are rich, but they are not billionaires. They are immigrants working in unconventional areas. As for his young subs, they are uncertain about how to deal with their homosexuality and the dominant whom they fall in love with.

However, there is something I don’t understand in the way Brina described his young MC. At the beginning of Bend Over’s blurb, she said that Shane is submissive. At the end of the same blurb, she said that he is rebellious. I’m not telling that subs are never going to rebel, but they are supposed to carry within themselves a deep need to surrender to a strong alpha. That’s the reason why they try hard to submit every time they are asked to do something by their dom. Therefore they can’t be called "rebellious". Submissiveness is not a role that you assume, this is the way you are inside your mind and your heart. Maybe this is my vision of submission that is too idealistic or absolute, but for me, a sub who is called “rebellious” is not a sub.

But Brina taught to troubled teenagers, I think. So she certainly knows a bit about rebellious teens. Maybe she depicted her youths based on these teens she met.

I found this story interesting. However, I have one reservation:

Those who read Rent Me and loved it will surely love Bend Over too. The theme is the same. The relationship between the dominant and his submissive are quite similar. And if you find that there wasn’t resolution of some points in their relationships at the end of these books, that’s because there will be sequels to the two novels. So if you wish, it will be possible for you to follow her characters in their next adventure.

But I warned members of the Klu Klux Klan not read this novel as the dominant is a Black guy. So you will surely hate it. :p

Brina definitely understood pretty well her creative writing lessons. She writes well. The cover is beautiful. However, I removed one star because of my reservation mentioned above.

I was quite looking forward to this novel and expected something a bit edgy, dark and not always politically correct - especially after reading a blog post from this author where she mentioned that she doesn't do one hundred percent perfect doms.

I discontinued 50% into the story, mainly because the dom, Julien, turned me off completely and fucking annoyed me to no end. I didn't mind the sixteen years gap between the heroes, heck, I love May-December romances, well, as long as one of the MCs isn't Hugh Hefner yet.

One of Julien's rules is no lying, and he punishes Shane several times quite strictly for doing so. (For a virgin boy who isn't even sure about his gayness and inclination towards submission, I didn't particularly appreciate his way of punishment with little preparation and no talk about boundaries). However, Mr. Proper himself is lying continuously as he uses subterfuge and tricks to bind Shane to him and to make him his boy.

What ultimately made me discontinue the story was their first anal sex together. I like reading sex scenes. Enjoy them dirty and dark, sexy and sweet and sometimes full of (good) pain. In this case it felt to me just as if Shane was being deliberately and clinically hurt. There was little preparation and comfort just a demand to endure. If he truly wants this boy so much, is it too much to ask to show some kindness? He knows he is only eighteen and comes from a rather strict and unloving home. DNF

I hardly know where to start with this one. What a effing mess! First, Shane's personality was all over the place. Scared innocent, sexy harlot, cynical thief, accomplished liar and hopeless liar. He had so many different personalities that at one stage I even wondered if he and sheena would turn out to be the same person. Julien was almost as bad, not to mention that he was a hypocrite (banning a Dom for ignoring a safe word and then putting Shane to the test without even a safe word) and a manipulative arsehole. Let's see: he stalked a vulnerable boy, set him up so he was even more vulnerable, lied to him an essentially tricked him into a D/s relationship. Was Julien so insecure that he couldn't tel that Shane was his for the asking or does he just like playing mind games? The whole set up was the sort of game perfect for predators that like unwilling victims. Nasty stuff. I could go on about all the loose ends, relative phrasing and nonsensical plot point but, quite frankly, I think I can't bear to waste another second on this crap!

This book was a lovely read in its own right. So much of it was delivered from Shane's point of view, and as an 18 yr old boy, he was still very young and naive. So for the majority of the book we are delivered the story through his maturity/mentality levels, which came across as pretty innocent despite his knack for always getting into trouble. It was endearing, and sad at times, his struggles, especially considering where they came from. Julien was a very patient figure, thankfully, as that's exactly what Shane needed. In my opinion, Shane was very fortunate to have been discovered by the man. The BDSM scenes were mild and not in your face and the development between characters wasn't rushed. Things were resolved nicely at the end and I do so hope Shane and Julien last for the long haul. ;)

Don't understand how this book can have a 4-star rating...it is such a disappointment. The author had a great story line that would have been a wonderful read except she couldn't figure out how to develop the characters. To say that Shane was schizophrenic would be a compliment. In his 'dialogue' he would make a statement and then 2 sentences later would completely contradict the first sentence. The author also tried to create a BDSM relationship between Shane and Juliene but that isn't possible when Juliene was nothing but a master manipulator and Shane was so obviously not submissive. She had no idea how to manage these characters. I think the author just wanted to jump on the M/M BDSM bandwagon and had no idea how to write in this genre. I've read many, many good books in this genre (see AJ Rose, SE Jakes). This is only the second 1 star rating I've given a book on GoodReads (out of over 800 books). It's also the second time I've stopped before finishing a book...had to quit at 42% just couldn't take anymore of the madness.

So many things in this book bothers me, it just got worse with every page turned !

I don't get why Julien doesn't tell Shane the truth, his explanation is just lame...
And then sets the "No Lies" rule. Also, selling drugs is bad but prostitution is okay ?!
What a hypocprite !

This is him talking to his f**king employee !! What the hell ?? O__O

"When rules are broken, I determine the consequences. And just so you know, I use corporal punishment"

No discussion to introduce Shane to the BDSM lifestyle or about limites and safewords... Except for this :

"I want you to write that you agree to accept any punishment I deem fit for the breaking of any rule and sign it."

Maybe Julien should read the BDSM books he gave Shane...

Should have stayed with my first opinion about this author.
Still didn't like the writing style, it accentuated the repetition in the thinking pattern of both MC's. They just kept keeping secrets and running around in circles, their push and pull seemed very toxic.
The side characters really seemed just like props, they didn't really add to the story except for Shane's dad. What an A*hole and the mother just a doormat. Her actions and words didn't align.
So no, can't say I liked or enjoyed the story.

Well done, Brina Brady! I will say this is much different than Rent Me and I was pleasantly surprised. She gives a different side to a Dom/Sub relationship, just proving that all relationships and agreements are different and singular in their experience. I've seen her post that her characters aren't your typical BSDM, and I say thank you. It was nice to read something different. I wanted to smack both of them a couple times, but that's because I was so into the story :) And the sex scenes in the book....WOAH hold on for a ride, there's a lot my friends, but she keeps them fresh...a sign of a great author.

Would I recommend Bend Over? Absolutely. I loved both of Brina's books so far and I can not wait until the sequel to Rent Me comes out. Her writing style is her own and I love that!

I speak from experience when I say that it takes so much to write a book and to get it out there. That in itself is a huge accomplishment and Brina should be proud....I'm proud of her!

Basically, this book is differently good and well written. Go click, you won't regret it. <3

I was so excited by the blurb for this story, and so disappointed by the actual reading of the story.
Since most of the story is told from Shane's point of view, we have to read it through the filter of an 18 year old who has been emotionally beaten by his past, and is very naive about the world and his sexuality.
Julien had moments of greatness, and moments of manipulative, hypocritical, douche-bag behaviours. I would have been okay with him manipulating certain events to get Shane to be with him, but it was a little too underhanded and confusing to really work for me.

The first 50% of the story felt very disjointed and frwctured, and each chapter was fine on it's own, but didn't flow at all into the next. Once Shane moves in with Julien, it started getting better, but I still had difficulty.

In general, the 'play' scenes were pretty good, but I didn't feel the emotional connection in any way, shape or form. I'm going to try the next book (because it's free through Kindle Unlimited) but I have to be honest that I'm not expecting much. Maybe I'll be surprised?

The blurb sounded rather promising. The book didn’t deliver, though.
“Julien's heart goes out to this gorgeous boy and he takes him under his wing”. Well, that’s one way to put it. Sounds harmless in the blurb. In reality, Julien manipulated Shane in the worst way. Apparently because he wasn’t sure Shane would want him and ‘had to make sure.’ Maybe he could have just asked? Shane spent most of the book behaving like a brat, unsure of what Julien wanted from him. Maybe he could have just asked?
The sex was rushed and so full of ‘girl-part-descriptions-being-used-for-boy-parts’ (is there a name for this?) I nearly gagged.
And then there was Shane’s family which all seemed capable of doing an emotional one-eighty within two sentences. No, really – his mother went from ‘Shane, how could you [be gay]’ to ‘I don’t care what you are. I love you’ in literally 3 lines of text!
Julien redeemed himself towards the end but that didn’t save it for me.

This is the story of a scared young man Shane who runs away from a troubled homelife and ends up living on a California beach. The reader learns about all his raw emotions through his thoughts and deeds.
It's also the story of the seemingly tough-guy Julien who falls in love with the runaway. It's interesting to gain insight into the emotions of this Dom who is both rough and tender with Shane who wants badly to gain Julien's love and respect.

I enjoyed this book which is written in the perspective of men at two different levels of a BDSM lifestyle. Sometimes harsh and scary and often funny and loving.

Another great book by Brina! Julien see's this beautiful blonde boy and has this strong desire to protect him, to help him and to make him his. Shane has had a hard life growing up with a very strict father who has made him feel ashamed about the desires he is having for other men. Shane has a lot of growing up to do and needs to start making better choices in his life and Julien is just the man to help him. Great story and I am very anxious for the sequel! It will be great to see their love grow. Great job Brina!

Shane this sweet screwed up kid living with a vile family. Julian, older, knowing he wanted Shane the moment he saw him, may have handled it the wrong way, but all he wanted was to love, protect, and dominant him. Shane needed his heavy hand, structure, love, acceptance and to feel safe at being who he is. Love this story, this was heartbreaking, loving, freeing and sexy as sin

Awesome Read! Suggest this book to anyone who loves BDSM and budding romances. The author does an amazing job at showing how new relationship can be hindered by inner demands, family issues, and lack of communication, but that they don't have to ruin it.

very dramatic, intense book. I hardly could put it down. The only part I didn't care for was the repetitiveness about the Reverend. well written to show characters feelings. The story continues in the second book.

Shane genuinely acted like an 18 year old. He got tiresome - petulant, whiny, self-centered. Julien was too good to be true - patient, understanding. Stalkerish?

Something about the way the two main characters met rubbed me the wrong way. I could not get into this one when I question how truly consensual the relationship is.

Shane used to work for Gus, a drug dealer, before he decided to leave. But not before stealing some drugs and a motorcycle. The Reverend, who is Shane’s father, is a bigoted jerk and one nasty piece of work who were constantly telling him he’d go to hell for his wrongdoings and for being gay. I found this book confusing at times, because the author would jump from one thing to the next without an explanation.

The bathroom scene between Shane and the stranger seemed highly unbelievable in the fact that no one is going to let someone they don’t even know their name tell them what to do in a sexual situation. Especially when the so-called stranger completely ignores Shane and gives snide comments when Shane tries to talk to them. While asleep on the beach, he is attacked and beaten by thugs for no reason in my opinion. There is a lot of talking about sex in this story and Julien is into BDSM.

The sex scenes in this book seem more like forced or coerced sex than anything consensual. Unfortunately, when I read a book that starts off confusing or jumps from topic to topic with no warning then I lose interest immediately and usually have to force myself to finish it if it’s a review book. This book has some violent scenes in it in my opinion. I normally wouldn’t have chosen this author’s book to review, as I’ve never read her books before. After this one I probably won’t read another one, but was asked for a second opinion on it. This story just didn’t appeal to me at all, nor could I finish it.

OK, this book was a bit of a mess. My eyes were sore after reading, since I've been rolling them so much. I filed this book under erotica, because it feels more like an erotic fantasy then a well thought-out romance.

Shane is 18 years old, and a very naive 18 at that. He is self-destructive, full of self-pity, calls himself a fuck-up and then act like one, and can't seem to learn his lesson. Julien is way older, and an experienced dom. In fact, he is the "Master of Doms", but he also act like a BDSM newbie with regards to limits and safewords. It also seems to me like he didn't want Shane to have any friends, and that is a dangerous sign.

Their relationship is riddled with misunderstandings, miscommunication, and Julien absolutely ignoring Shane's wishes. Then there is Shane's weird relationship with his sister, and his family, and that plotline did not make a lick of sense.

So to conclude, I know this book has its fans, but I am not one of them.

WTF?!?
Almost dnf. I was so upset with the lack of respect from the dom. Playing games to make the sub want him, but at the same time demanding no lies from him right from the the moment they meet!? Asking the sub to always talk to him about everything but never telling anything about his own life!? Making life changing decisions over the subs head, against his will without even communicating why!? This is NOT BDSM!

DNF. This was…not good. The stalking of a minor was a huge red flag. The “coincidences” were hard to believe. I felt like I climbed out of one plot hole just to fall into another. I only got two chapters in but that was enough for me.
