”I am bored most of the time. Bored of politics and adventure and feasting and quarreling. Of vengeance and loyalty. I have learned there is one thing a person never tires of, no matter how long they live. And that is being in love. All else is ash and ember.”

── .✦ The Plot ᨒ↟𖠰𖥧˚
➵ Emily Wilde, a renowned dryadologist, is embarking on her most dangerous adventure yet. She will be studying the inner workings of the realm of Faerie… as queen. Alongside, handsome and melodramatic Wendell Bamby who is now her finance and king of the Silva Lupi.
Wendell’s vengeful stepmother is ravaging his lands with a deadly curse and it is up to them to discover her hideout whilst also maneuvering through faerie court politics and digging up old history that may help them on their quest.

➵ The final book in the Emily Wilde series and what a bittersweet feeling ✨𓂃⊹
I should build a little faerie shrine for these books, by placing them in a circle of rocks and flowers with how much these have touched my heart ꨄ︎
ㅤ➵ Something I have always admired about these stories is how genuine it feels. Yes, you’re amidst a fairytale full of fickle and often dangerous creatures, magic, and murderous step-mothers, but everyone feels so real.
For one thing, there is a lot of doubt. Doubt in the self, doubt in the relationship, doubt in the future. Side characters are also approaching Emily with their doubts and opinions on her life.
I feel like that’s so representational of what life is. There will be doubts and other’s opinions, but ultimately you have to make those leaps on your own and figure it out along the way.
The characters feel like real tangible people with flaws, suspicions, fears, and expectations.
For instance:
”Oh, no!” Lilja said. “That is not what I meant - I don’t believe for a second that Wendell would harm you. But I worry there will come a day when you no longer recognize him. And what hurt is worse than that?”
There are pressures and concerns from other people in her life who remain forthcoming about their thoughts on the matters Emily faces. However, they ultimately know it is Emily’s decision and they support her, even going as far as to assist her in her endeavors. As much as it scares them.
Those are true friends!!! 🫂
Emily also faces the societal pressures within the land of Faerie. She is to be queen. A human queen at that. The faeries within the realm don’t necessarily accept her and often meet her with malice or disdain. They feel as if a human is unfit to lead their lives. And why wouldn’t they? She’s an entirely different species altogether.
ㅤ➵ However, what makes these characters so wonderful to me… one character in particular is Wendell.
The man,
the faerie king,
the melodramatic legend (。•̀ ,<)~✩‧₊
He doesn’t care about all of those trivial things. The only thing he is concerned about is Emily and ensuring she is safe and comfortable.
Here are some of the quotes that elicit what I am trying to convey:
⟢
”Em,” he said, taking my hand. “You will not have to ride Red Wind if you do not wish it. In fact, once I have retaken my throne, you will not have to do anything if you do not wish it. If you desire to sit in some corner of the castle hunched over your books and notepaper, bestirring yourself only to demand a tour of some brownie market or bogle den, then it will be done.”
I let out a trembling breath. “And what sort of queen would that make me?”
He looked perfectly earnest as he leaned in to kiss my cheek. “Mine.”
Moments like this make me realize how perfectly matched Emily and Wendell are and only further reinstates my Emidell ship ☺️✨💌
It’s also the fact that he states MULTIPLE times within the book that he would gladly give up his throne and go back to Cambridge to live out their days as Dryadologist professors if that would make her happy. He’d be willing to leave his home again for her.
Brb. Catapulting myself OVER A BRIDGE (and secretly hoping Wendell will catch me heehee) 𐔌՞ ܸ.ˬ.ܸ՞𐦯
⟢
”Em,” he said, “I am quite accustomed to the cadence of your silences by now. I know the difference between thinking and brooding. You may hoard your misgivings in your usual dragonish manner if you wish, but I will work them out eventually, you know. Spare me the trouble?”
Not only that, but the scenes where Wendell is so in tune to Emily’s emotions and moods… even her silences! When a man loves you, you know. In this case, he’s a faerie man…. So like… even better 🫣
⟢
”It’s a kindness that she shares her concerns with you,” he said. “Lilja is a good friend.”
In this quote, his love for her really stood out to me, because even after Emily expressed that her friend Lilja had doubts about their marriage, he still remains so supportive of her friends and her own desires and whims.
Furthermore, as I continue to rave about my ✨blond babygirl✨… He created a cozy cottage to fulfill her dragon hobby dreams, even allowing for her friends to stay there anytime they’d like.
He also understands that Emily is one to get overwhelmed, especially with courtly matters and busy servants and assassination attempts… and made that cottage as a means of escape for her where she can just be alone. As much as it pains him to part from her.
Don’t get me wrong, he will still bombard her with letters about his days and how much he yearns for her. However, he never impedes on her privacy and is always there whenever she is ready to come home 💒
That’s on a healthy relationship (´ ˘ `)✧
ㅤ➵ Moving along… Wendell is from another species entirely and often showcases this by his inhuman mannerisms. He doesn’t FEEL the same way that humans might. Some may say it’s almost psychopathic. But it’s just simply nature.
As Lilja mentioned in the story, the fae are like nature. You don’t question a winter storm just as you wouldn’t question a wolf eating you for survival.
The same applies to him, yet he proves his uniqueness by his understanding of humans and lesser fae. Most importantly, he comprehends Emily’s emotions and respects her above all else, despite the very clear disconnect that they are wont to have.
”Yes,” Wendell said, gazing at me steadily. “I must think of such things for your sake, for you are first in my thoughts.”
ㅤ➵ That goes into my thoughts why I so firmly believe that Emily is perfect for Wendell and always has been.
As stated in my review, Emily Wilde and the Encyclopedia of Faeries they are each other’s missing puzzle pieces 🧩. They are the yin to each other’s yang ☯︎
Despite being polar opposites in many ways.. Emily being the introverted, socially awkward, and intelligent scholar while Wendell is the flamboyant, charming, and unpredictable faerie king. They also have many similarities as well.
Emily is most likely on the spectrum, giving her an advantage of dealing with someone like Wendell who isn’t in fact human at all. However, they have an odd innate understanding of one another because they both observe the world and feel things differently than most.
I feel like that is one of the most pivotal aspect to these books and their relationship and what ensures these stories to be so memorable 🧚🌿
ㅤ➵ While we are on the topic of characters… again, I am astounded by the depth and diversity within them. Heather Fawcett writes everyone so eloquently as if they’re in the room with me.
In this final book of the series, we’re introduced to many more characters, most of them being apart of Faerie.
One of my new favorites is Lord Taran, Wendell’s step-uncle. I love how he is an ancient bored individual who is also inherently dangerous. So much so he sliced a tree vertically in half with a mere sword. (GYATT)
However, one of my most treasured tropes ever is when the big burly character is just a cinnamon roll teddy bear for their person. Lord Taran, harbors a soft spot for Callum, his human lover that he would quite literally do anything for. Even if it means… showing some compassion 🤣
”Yes,” Callum said after a little pause. As if seeking reassurance, he glanced at Lord Taran, who gave him a smile that I had never seen from him before, in that it was entirely devoid of malice.”
ㅤ➵ Okay, I swear I’m almost done, but this is like my goodbye to these books and I’m dragging it out on purpose okay?? I know they are always there for me to reread but it won’t be like reading it for the first time ever again. Please, cut this poor girl some slack 😔
➵ The reason it did not get five stars is because it was often too predictable. I pondered about the resolution quite a bit and it felt as if there wasn’t enough conflict as there was in the other books. While, the characters stole the show and my heart once again, I did notice towards the end that I knew how all the stones would inevitably fall into place.
Despite that, my adoration for the characters and the writing triumphed some of those details and I still savored every last word on each page 💗
── .✦ To Our Much Awaited Conclusion ᨒ↟𖠰𖥧˚
”Where would I be without you, Em?” He said. It was an old joke of ours, but it wasn’t a joke now, the way he said it.”
ㅤ➵ Where would I be without this series? These stories will live on in my soul forever. I have yet to read another series like it. These books are meant to be slowly consumed and stored away like little wildflowers in your overall pockets 💐
So if you haven’t already, embark on this once in a lifetime whimsical journey and be eternally changed. I know I am, forevermore 🌿🧚🍄✨💌
── .✦ The Whimsical and Hilarious Quotes ᨒ↟𖠰𖥧˚
”And have you ever needed anything else? Have you not shaken a kingdom to its foundations, found a door to a distant otherland, overthrown a queen? Hand you the right storybook, and you are capable of anything.”
”Poor dear,” Wendell said, bending to rub Shadow’s ears. “When I retake my throne, I shall dedicate a fleet of servants to his needs. They shall make for him a velvet bed in every room, with a fire burning beside each one, and the bones of my enemies will be preserved for his enjoyment.”
“That started off well, but I did not care for the ending,” I said.
”And anyway, I have always wanted to duel my uncle. He is said to be the best swordsman in the realm. It’s been a while since I had so much fun.”
“He nearly decapitated you!” I exclaimed.
“Yes, but besides that, Em,” he said patiently.
”Anyway, Em, I am sure you are happily ensconced in your native habitat, that dreary only meant to mortal rumination that is the library, no doubt thinking of me hardly at all. Well, why would you give a thought to romance or the faerie kingdom that now belongs to you as much as to me when you have a limitless supply of dusty old tomes to mutter and scowl at?”
”The bedchamber was similarly abandoned, apart from Orga, who was curled up among the tangled blankets - I guess that she had not permitted the servants to make the bed. To my surprise, she greeted me with a chirp and rolled over, purring, allowing me to pet her stomach. Shadow made a lumbering hop onto the bed to commence his customary midmorning nap; Orga ignored his existence entirely, which represented a marked improvement in their relations.”
”After a moment, he said, “Why must mortals always be solving mysteries? What is the point of life if everything is pinned and labelled in some display case? You scholars should aim to discover more mysteries, not untangle them.”
”He turned to kiss me. “My dearest Emily! I am home at last. And all because of you.”
“You had a bit to do with it,” I said drily, though it was difficult to stop myself from smiling. I have often found Wendell’s happiness infectious, particularly now; it seemed to radiate from him like morning sunlight.”
