This book was very average. It doesn't contain anything particular, I found it very boring, not much was happening and I wasn't captivated by the characters development as much to keep me entertained. I really struggled to finish it so I dnf'd at like 40%, I fell asleep so much reading it, and it never happens to me.
I did find the humour to be good.
Unfortunately, it's a 2 stars for me.

I was super intrigued by this one because I love a little paranormal, magical spin. And John the ghost was exactly the chaotic meddler I was hoping for! Unfortunately everything else was a miss. Boo!

Still reeling from a breakup, Mia is devastated to discover Sam is joining her family for Christmas. The very man who broke her heart six years ago. Enter John, a lonely ghost who’s been drifting in limbo for decades and suddenly discovers that Mia is the first person who can see him. So naturally, he decides it’s his mission to interfere in her relationship with Sam.

This had potential, but the conflict between Mia and Sam was too ridiculous for me. I get that she was mortified by what happened all those years ago, but not enough to justify six full years of refusing to even hear him out. It made the whole miscommunication feel unnecessarily prolonged and silly.

On top of that, Mia came off really whiny and Sam was so meek that I struggled to root for either of them. And given how messy their communication was, the sudden “I love you” felt like it came completely out of nowhere.

So, I loved the concept of this book, John the meddling ghost and Mia, the heartbroken person who can see him, but sadly, the delivery left me rather flat.

Mia came across as a very single focused person who, towards the later end of the story, was coming across as self-centred and was purely using John to extract her own revenge.

John's departure at the end, too, seemed rushed! I hated how Mia got what she wanted and then forgot who helped her get it!

Bit of a festive letdown if I'm honest....

When I saw this was marketed as BBC’s Ghosts meets Emily Henry I was hooked - as I love both of those.

I really enjoyed this! It’s the perfect book to get into the festive ‘spirit’ (literally) as it perfectly encapsulated going back to your family home as an adult for Christmas. The cosy festivities but also the feeling awkward and the meddling parents - like wholesome but also kinda feeling disjointed from your ‘actual’ life. I also loved how British this was - it was just a perfect Christmas read.

We follow Mia as she returns home for Christmas and is met with multiple surprises. Firstly her brother has invited her ex (Sam) - whom she ghosted after an incident many years ago and who she hates. Secondly, she meets a ghost (John) who lives in the cottage. They (Mia and John) decide to mess with Sam and take revenge for what happened all those years ago - it’s ghostly pranks galore.

“We’re messing with the handsome lad, not trying to terrify him into an early grave.”

John ‘haunting’ Sam was actually hilarious - such good pranks. I loved how he kinda just took it in his stride and how they were low level pranks but also such inconveniences. So fun!

“That boy looks at you like you’re his Mona Lisa, you know. The masterpiece he’s been looking for his whole life.” Mia swallows hard, trying to rid herself of the sudden lump in her throat. “It’s a rare thing, for someone to see you and think you’re beyond special. I should know. Trust me, Mia. Running from it will only get you a lifetime of regrets.”

I really liked the relationship between Sam and Mia. We get the initial animosity, which then thaws as the tension heats and they get ‘cosier’. I love how John was team Mia & Sam and how this unfolded.

John was my favourite character and added so much to the story!

Overall this was a really cute and cosy Christmas romance - perfect for the holiday season and a must read (in my opinion)

Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for providing me with an arc to read. This is a cosy Christmas romance involving miscommunication, second chances and brothers best friend.

While the overall plot of this story was fine (if a bit dramatic/ dragged out), the writing style didn’t work for me. It was present tense, dual POV - but the second POV is a literal ghost who is not someone any of the characters knew in real life. I thought a lot of the content could have been edited out, and to be honest I also felt the main female character was quite annoying!

It was a quick read, pretty cosy and obviously very seasonal. Closed door, for those of you who do not want 🌶️.

Thank you NetGalley for providing this ARC!

When I requested this ARC, the first thing that captured my attention was the cover and the theme. I love Christmas and I want to read more and more holiday themed novels closer to the holiday, so I was quite surprised when I saw I was approved to receive the book. I went into this quite blind, and did not even know what to expect, but I am so pleasantly surprised.

Ghosted at Christmas is the perfect feel good romcom Christmas book. It is really fast paced, quite funny and there are a few heartfelt moments. As a big fan of Christmas I enjoyed all the little traditions and Christmas related details. It did put me in a very festive mood and generally uplifted me after a busy day at work. The story was constructed well and worked.

The only reason I am not giving the full 5 stars is because of the main female character Mia. She was quite annoying and rude at times. The story does suggest that her reaction is due to miscommunication but even with that in mind the lead male character Sam was always portrayed as sweet and genuine guy, therefore Mia was very often very out of line of how she was treating him, which I did not like.

On the more positive side I really enjoyed the small magical realism with the character John, he was funny and sweet and great edition of the whole plot.

Really pleasantly surprised with this book and really happy to be given the opportunity by NetGalley to have this ARC, I would definitely recommend this, I believe it will feel even better read in December. I would stay on the look and read from this author more.

Light hearted romantic-comedy with wholesome Christmas vibes to get you into the spirit of Christmas. The book was enjoyable, the miscommunication was slightly frustrating and the magic around the ghosts was interesting. However, I did enjoy John’s meddlesome tricks but it was strange for a dual POV.

Not my usual genre of book but an easy enough read!

Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC e-copy of this book.

Ghosted at Christmas is a festive rom-com with a paranormal twist and popular romance tropes, including second-chance romance, forced proximity, & a grumpy/sunshine dynamic!

The story follows Mia, who heads home for the holidays after being ghosted by a guy, only to find that her ex, Sam, is staying with her family for the week. John, a ghost who's been stuck on the family grounds for 30 years, finds Mia can see him & thinks helping her heal could be his ticket to the afterlife!

The strength of this book is its charming characters. Unfortunately, FMC Mia is frustratingly stubborn & insufferable at times. In her late 20s, she complains about Sam like an immature teen. Their relationship ended with an unfortunate event, & she regurgitates it over & over, reminding herself not to trust him. Ironically, Sam is very likeable—the kind of “golden retriever” love interest that readers will root for. But the heart of the story is John, the ghost. He’s witty & mischievous & helps shift Mia’s terrible outlook. Mia’s family members are all animated & quirky, creating a chaotic, festive family holiday vibe!

The pacing is brisk & easy—perfect for a weekend binge read. Although the main conflict drags on due to miscommunication, the ending offers closure & warmth, perfect for a Christmas romance!

NARRATION:

Imogen Church narrates the audiobook using her trademark character voices to make each character come alive! Her performance of Mia is dynamic—lively & sarcastic in dialogue, over-the-top dramatic in her inner thoughts, & softer/more vulnerable in quieter moments! She gives Sam a more restrained voice with a gentle hesitation that conveys his guarded nature. In contrast, John (ghost) is given an intelligent-sounding voice with playful timing that highlights his humour. Church’s dialogue delivery feels effortless & makes every exchange engaging & easy to follow!

Mia's Christmas holiday is off to a rough start - she has been ghosted by her most recent fling and is unexpectedly stuck spending the week with her ex Sam at her family house. Then, she starts a friendship with John - a ghost who has spent the last 30 years stuck in limbo with no one to interact with.

After getting over her shock to see a ghost, the two team up to make Sam's life more difficult during their week together. But after a while, John sees something between Mia and Sam and his interaction with the two shifts as he sees an opportunity to finally move on.

Once you get over the fact that Mia doesn't have a bigger issue with being able to see a ghost, this is such a cozy book to read. Mia and John are such a fun combination of characters with their interactions.

Also, I enjoy the show Ghosts, and this book gave me the same feel-good energy. It was a fun rom-com mix with limited spice and a dash of magical realism - a combination I didn't realize I was craving at the time! It is a fun holiday read, but also not one you feel like you NEED to read during the holiday season. This is a particularly good read if you enjoy stores with exes to lovers, forced proximity, and a supernatural twist.

Thank you, Penguin Random House U.K., NetGalley, and Holly Whitmore, for this eARC in exchange for my honest review.

Such a feel good, festive book. Similar to Sarah Morgan/ Jenny Colgan vibes.

Third person POV, we are invited into Mia's crazy family home for the week of Christmas and she comes face to face with her ex boyfriend Sam who has been invited to stay there and she is NOT happy about it.

After storming off the converted guest house she meets John, a ghost for 30 years who used to work there but is now stuck, unable to pass over.

Mia & John strike up a lovely friendship and they both find exactly what they are looking for.

I had been wanting to read this novel, mainly because of my Ghosts obsession, but it also sounded really cute. It was a sweet, romantic, and heartwarming read, perfect for ringing in the holiday season!

The story starts off on a stressful day for Mia as she is trying to get to her parents' house for their annual Christmas party, but everything goes wrong and she ends up arriving really late. When she gets there, she runs into Sam, a guy who humiliated her in college and whom she hasn't spoken to since. Worse yet, Sam is spending the holiday with her and her family! What's a girl to do but hide out in the cottage near the house? Except for the fact that the cottage is already being lived in...by a ghost. A friendly ghost who died in the nineties and is trying to move on but can't figure out how. Perhaps helping Mia find love might be the answer?

There were a lot of entertaining and funny moments in this novel. John has way more ghost powers than any of the ghosts on the TV series. Not only can he touch something, but he can also pick it up and move it around. He can also be heard when he's singing. He can even eat, although he unfortunately can't taste. John first uses his powers to mess with Sam, ensuing hilarity. Then he uses them to try to get Sam and Mia back together. Meanwhile, Mia can't decide if she should stay mad at Sam or not, especially when he's being so charming...

Overall, I really enjoyed this delightful and cozy holiday romance. Ghosted at christmas definitely warms up these cold winter days!

Movie casting suggestions:
Charlie: Ben Hardy
Aunt Gertie: Phyllida Law

This book gives a whole new meaning to ‘Christmas spirit’ ~ 3.75✨

✧ Genre: Romance - Christmas, Comedy, Closed door
✧ Tropes: Second chance, Exes to lovers, Forced proximity, A paranormal twist
✧ Release date: 23rd October 2025
✧ For fans of: BBC’s Ghosts, Emily Henry & Tessa Bailey

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

✧ PLOT ✧

When Mia arrives home for Christmas the last thing she expects is to be sharing her house with the person she likes least in the world. The person she’s avoided since college, the person she ghosted… SAM!?
But the thing she expected even less was to run into a very friendly ghost living in the family guest house!?
Craziest, Christmas, Ever.
However, thanks to John & his ghostly abilities, Mia’s nightmare before Christmas may actually turn out to be the best one yet 🎄👻

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

✧ SUMMARY ✧

Ghosted at Christmas is a cosy, festive, romantic comedy filled with relatable characters, hilarious family shenanigans & an added side of ‘friendly ghost’. It’s heartwarming, overflowing with Christmas magic & will leave you feeling all kinds of warm & fuzzy. It’s a story of family, friends, love & forgiveness & I would definitely recommend it.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

✧ OPINION ✧

This was an enjoyable, lighthearted, positive love story that was fast paced & easy to follow. I loved the sarcastic family banter & the relatable situations that arise in many households every Christmas season. The ghostly element added an extra layer of fun & entertainment & definitely sets the book aside from other books of the same genre.

Character wise, initially FMC Mia really wasn’t my cup of tea. Her negative, pessimistic personality was over the top & at times, unnecessary but thankfully, MMC John’s uplifting, optimistic nature led to a noticeable shift in her demeanour (& not a moment too soon!)
Hands down John the ghost was the best part of the story & for any BBC Ghosts fans, his character will not disappoint👻

If you enjoy heartwarming, comedic positive stories with close family vibes & a happy ending - this is for you!

~

Ghosted at Christmas is a fantastic debut from Holly Whitmore & I look forward to whatever comes next!

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for my honest and voluntary review.

I loved the cover, the title was intriguing (Christmas & paranormal activity? Count me in!) and I was excited to get started. But from the beginning something just felt off to me personally. Plenty of people seem to adore this book and I seem to be the odd one out, so obviously do not let my commentary stop you from giving this one a try if the general story speaks to you.

There were definitely some small details that annoyed me at the beginning (The timeline with the bus ride on the way to the party either does not line up or she thinks it is okay to be 4h late without letting anyone know. And does she have to call her father daddy?) that I would normally not take so seriously. About 50 pages in, I realized what the actual issue was: Third person narration in present tense, especially combined with at times multiple very short sentences in a row just is not a writing style I enjoy as it felt kind of abrupt more often than not. Don't get me wrong, the author definitely knows how to write, but, unfortunately, this just didn't work for me personally. Combine that with the miscommunication trope working overtime (before switching to "I love you's" in literally 45 min) and her family completely ignoring their own daughter's wishes and this one was just not my cup of tea.

I absolutely loved John as a character and his earlier antics and was genuinely happy when he got his deserved ending, but that was just not enough as a saving grace at that point.

Again, if you know you enjoy some paranormal holiday vibes, some Christmas food inspiration (the detailed food description truly sounded delicious!) and are not bothered by the miscommunication trope or writing style described above, you will most likely have a much better time than I did ;)

Rounded down to 3.75 ⭐
So I was drawn to this because of the blurb "BBC's Ghost meets Emily Henry". Love both of these!

Mia is heading home to spend the holidays with her family. She was recently "ghosted" and is looking forward to simply spending time with her family and enjoying the tradition of the big party her parents throw every year. However, upon arrival, she discovers that her brother Charlie has invited her ex, Sam, to the party. It has been years since they split (they were high school sweethearts). Mia is NOT happy about this.

Soon after, she meets John. John is a ghost who has been stuck on this earthly place for the last 30 years. Mia and John decide work together to make Sam miserable during this weekend.John begins to see that there are still feelings between the two, and he begins to think that getting them back together might be his way to move on.

Although I really did not see the Emily Henry connection, I actually enjoyed this! It was a fun, quick little getaway. The characters were well written, and I especially loved John and the humor and insight he brought to the story! Mia's family made me chuckle, and I loved the festive interaction. There is a low spice level (my preference), and a magical atmosphere. It was a great cozy little romance, and exactly what I needed at this time!

The only but- the miscommunication became a bit overdone, but all in all, a fun read.

Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Books for the ARC. This is my honest and voluntary review!

Ghosted at Christmas is a feel-good romantic comedy by Holly Whitmore. I have come to enjoy romance with an element of fantasy, so this book was right up my alley!

Mia has escaped to her family's home in the country for Christmas. She's happy to escape her normal day-to-day after being ghosted by her now ex-boyfriend. But things take an unexpected turn when she arrives to discover her brother's best friend Sam is also staying with her family for the holidays. Sam was the one who broke her heart all those years ago, and even now, despite her best intentions to exact revenge upon him, she finds herself drawn to him.

What kind of revenge you may ask? Well here is where we get to the fantasy element of the book, because it just so happens that her cottage is occupied by a ghost. This ghost, John, is very happy to have someone who can finally see him and talk to him after 30 years of being alone. And as it turns out he's also very happy to lend a hand with creating a bit of mischief for poor Sam!

Ghosted for Christmas made me laugh more than a few times, and would make a great holiday read. If you enjoy exes to lovers, forced proximity and a paranormal twist then be sure to give this book a read!

This one wasn’t for me…

Mia is unlucky in love. Her most recent boyfriend has ghosted her and now she is spending Christmas with the boy that started all her problems, Sam. But wait there is a meddlesome ghost called John here too. Sam is generally confused about Mia’s behaviour 90% of the time and John is just here to cause chaos because it’s been 30years of no one seeing or talking to him.
Mia is determined to hate Sam forever, is she right, is Sam everything that’s wrong in this world?!

Let me answer that, no she isn’t right. Sam is like a human puppy dog. Mia is holding a grudge for something that was clearly a miscommunication and mistake, for like 6 years! Mia is ridiculous. John is generally great but I guess he believes goes along with Mia’s insanity because he’s literally been driven mad because he was ignored for 6 years?

Was this book all bad? No. The writing is actually really easy to read and the author captures the joy of Christmas perfectly and that kept me reading. But the storyline and motivations are tenuous at best. It was a long story for not a lot of plot. Mia wasn’t really likable and I mostly just felt bad for Sam.

Again these are just my thoughts and I’m sure others ate this book up! Read it and decide for yourself!

Romance meets paranormal in this new holiday release. Mia is unlucky in love and is ghosted by the guy she’s seeing, just weeks before Christmas. She heads home early for the holiday to spend time with her family but much to her dismay, discovers her family is also playing host to her brother’s best friend Sam, none other than the person who humiliated and broke her heart years earlier. And trust me - Mia can hold a grudge. When it comes to getting revenge and surviving this tricky season, she gets some unlikely help from the home’s resident ghost, John, who only she can see.
I wanted to like this so much more than I did, but unfortunately this fell flat for me in more ways than one. The potential is there with a paranormal mystery & Christmastime romance brewing. But the main character Mia was honestly a brat throughout and was thoroughly unlikable. I would’ve loved to hear more from John and what led him to his current predicament, as well as his ultimate fate. Others may enjoy this more though.

Mia is having a rough start to her holiday after being ghosted by the guy she had been dating for months. To make matters worse she arrives home to the news that Sam, her former crush and almost boyfriend, will be spending Christmas with her family.

Mia is determined to give Sam the cold shoulder, after all he is the man who not only broke her heart, but humiliated her in the process. It does not matter that it was years ago while at college or that it may have been a misunderstanding.

However, Mia did not count on a meddlesome ghost named John who sees the sparks between Sam and Mia and becomes determined to keep Mia from making the same mistake he made years ago. If it helps him reach the afterlife in the process, all the better.

I loved Sam and Mia’s interactions, because even though there were a lot of hurt feelings between them, they were very obviously still in love with each other. Ghosted at Christmas was the perfect second chance romance to kick off the holiday season.

The book follows Mia who starts off with pretty much the worst day ever, while she is on her way home to her family for Christmas. Only to discover her worst enemy Sam is at her parents house for Christmas.
She has another surprise when to get away from Sam she decides to stay in the little cottage at the bottom of her parents garden. Where she finds John who has been the resident ghost for the past few decades.
Mia & John form a really good friendship, & she enlists his help to wind up Sam.
I loved the characters in the book Mia was lovely but she could definitely hold a grudge. Sam was a golden retriever style character didn’t want to upset anyone. John was definitely a friendly ghost & a little mischievous.
I will say enemies to lovers isn’t my favourite troupe & you knew most of the way through the book that they had feelings for each other but because of something that happened 6 years in the past all they needed to do was talk it through but Mia just wouldn’t let it happen.
On the whole I enjoyed the book 3.5stars

This was a cosy second chance romance perfect to read before Christmas.
🎄
We follow Mia going home for Christmas with her festive spirits low & being Ghosted by her date.
it gave Bridget jones diary at the start with Mia and her mums annual Christmas party.. which I loved!
Hoping to escape and relax at her family home doesn’t go as expected when her Ex Sam is there at her mums party.. not just for the night.. the whole week.
Even more surprising Mia can see John .. and John is a ghost who’s been in limbo on her parents property for 30yrs without a soul to talk to. After all this time he wonders why this heartbroken girl can see him. As they become friends he’s set out to show Mia that love really isn’t that dead when he sees how Sam and Mia look at each other he knows what he can do.
Perfect if you like your romances with no spice, a lil bit cheesy and told in 3rd person 🤭

This is a really terrible read. I DNF’d about 35% because the main character Mia is absolutely horrible. She is entitled, privileged, self-centred, boring, rude, jealous, angry, selfish and bitter. She is “unlucky in love” which is quite telling given she is just a vindictive and nasty character. I’m pretty sure we are supposed to like her and feel sorry for her?? Her ex-relationship with Sam which went wrong because of HER is written as if Sam is in the wrong which is totally bizarre and confusing. Mia has also befriended a ghost that only she can see, yet doesn’t ask anything about him and instead he’s sucked into her (very boring and self centred) drama. Im not being funny, if most people met a ghost from many years ago would you not be intrigued? Not Mia - just obsessed with herself and the fact she’s the victim in everything. She comes across very narcissistic (probably why I’m so triggered ). I just couldn’t read anymore with such a self obsessed character. The storyline had such a good premise which was so disappointing.

Another ARC read requested through NetGalley.

A lovely little story which definitely gives you 'Ghosts' vibes.

Loved the friendship that occurs between Mia and John and how they were able to help each other and to find things out about each other and to eventually push them into discussing things from their past.

And then of course there is Mia and Sam's relationship, and you could feel the tension between them, as soon as they meet, even though Mia was struggling with what is going on between them, and how she eventually lets Sam talk to her about what actually happened six years ago, and how she realises how wrong she was about the whole situation.

This story was an easy read, enjoyable and most definitely gives you Christmas vibes.

My only disappointment was that Mia and John do not get the opportunity to say their goodbyes.

Mia returns home for a quiet family Christmas, but soon discovers her brother has invited his friend Sam to stay. The problem is, Mia hasn't spoken to Sam for six years after an incident at University.

John has been a ghost for 30 years, and when he realises Mia can see him, he wonders if helping her is his way out of limbo. What follows are many amusing practical jokes - until John realises that Mia and Sam are perfect for each other. Can he help them see this?

The story made me chuckle at times, some of the things John does to Sam were brilliant - hiding one sock of each pair and replacing his pens with dried out ones were fabulous ideas! I really liked Sam, and found John's story to be very emotional. Mia was hot and cold for me, but I did like how she tried to help John. A lovely cosy Christmas read.

Ghosted at Christmas is a festive rom com with a paranormal twist. Mia heads home for Christmas only to discover that her ex, Sam, is staying with her family, along with a friendly ghost named John, who’s determined to stir things up and help Mia get a little revenge.

I enjoyed the supernatural edge to this novel, although I felt it was almost forgotten as Mia and Sam grew closer. I found it a little frustrating that Mia held onto her grudge for so long, which made it harder to fully warm to her at times. The resolution also felt a bit too easy. However, if you’re in the mood for a cosy, slightly paranormal romantic comedy to enjoy this Christmas, this one definitely fits the bill.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.

This was a lovely story, and the pranks played by the ghost so much fun. The only thing I didn't like was the setting - Worcester. It seems obvious (from the use of words like "Homey") that the author's American and Worcester has just been picked at random. Why? The story's mainly set in the family home; they don't go into any city, but riding in a taxi for 40 minutes? Why didn't she just get off the rail replacement bus somewhere closer to home? And there isn't just Worcester Station. For years there have been 2 stations - Worcester Foregate Street and Worcester Shrub Hill, and more recently Worcestershire Parkway. If you're going to set a book in a real place, at least research it.

This was a cheesy Christmas romance. And it would've been better if the entirety of the plot didn't boil down to miscommunication.

I really liked the ghost and his story was bittersweet, although it was very secondary.

Our main character is so very mean and incredibly hot and cold to this ex for no reason? He is literally so nice to her at every turn. And continues to give her undeserved grace. I couldn't ship them. He deserves better!

The book opens with a Black character with dreadlocks reeking of weed. The main character is happy when she realises he is getting a different bus, implying he is disgusting. It has nothing to do with the story or plot. Entirely unnecessary. This is the ONLY Black character in the whole book. I subtracted one star from my rating just for that.

I’m so glad I came across this book and I’m really thankful that the author, publishers and NetGalley gave me an early copy of it.

This is such a sweet and slightly chaotic love story. As much as I was mad at Adam for what Mia when through back in college, I am happy they had John meddling with them which eventually led them to falling in love all over again. I loved the ending and somewhere towards the end I felt a tug at my heart and that just shows how powerful writing is. I laughed and got emotional with the characters through the story. Perfect start to begin reading Christmas themed books!

This was the most wonderful Christmassy romance!
I was skeptical of a second chance romance as it’s not really my thing but the set up was done in a great way that meant I was quite happy for Sam and Mia to work through things.

I absolutely adore John (the ghost) and I loved the queer representation he provided. His ghostly behaviour had me howling with laughter and I can completely see why this is perfect for fans of BBCc’s Ghosts (one of my all time favourite shows!)

I’ve knocked off half a star for Mia’s hot and cold attitude towards Sam because, even though I can hold a grudge, I do think she took it a bit far.
