Look on the Heart: A Pride and Prejudice Variation

Rate this book
Elizabeth Bennet's father has raised her to value a person's character more than their appearance. He learned the hard way that physical beauty can conceal poor behavior—an error he made in marrying his wife. Determined not to repeat Mr. Bennet's mistake, Elizabeth resolves to judge people by more than outward appearances. When Mr. Darcy, a guest of the new resident of Netherfield Park, attends the local assembly, she is intrigued.

Mr. Darcy's face has been the subject of gossip and ridicule all his life. A port-wine birth mark covers a considerable portion of his face and invites suspicion and cruelty from those around him. A broken nose and scar only worsen his appearance. When his friend Bingley insists that they attend an assembly the night of his arrival, Darcy is reluctant. What lady would not find it a punishment to stand up with him? When he meets Elizabeth Bennet, he is captivated at once. She sees him.

As their acquaintance deepens, Mr. Darcy finds himself in love with the country miss. But one misunderstanding threatens everything. Letting the past dictate his actions, he breaks Elizabeth’s heart. Understanding comes, and he must now seek forgiveness from the only lady who has ever loved him.

This Darcy and Elizabeth Pride and Prejudice variation is a sweet, low-angst story where beauty is more than skin deep, and a happily ever after is assured.

Being myself born with a "strawberry mark" on my neck just under my left chin, the premise that Darcy and others in his family have a mark on their faces intrigued me. Elizabeth has been taught by her father to "look on the heart"...to judge a person by their behavior, by their character, rather than by their appearance.

Darcy shows even deeper reluctance to mix with society, knowing how he is being judged. He also is wary of any lady who pays attention to him as he has learned over and over again that it is his estate and his wealth that they want to "marry".

He and Elizabeth find friendship and things seem to be leading to a proposal. However...what is it that is said about eavesdropping?...things take a drastic turn and it is Darcy who disappears without a word to Elizabeth.

This story does have romance for two other of the Bennet sisters. I was glad to read about Mary's part in this. Her mother has directed Mr. Collins to Mary and that leads to Elizabeth paying more attention to this neglected sister.

I enjoyed this story. There is a short epilogue.

“When you take the measure of another, be sure to look on the heart.” (quote from the book)

What if the handsome Mr. Darcy had been born with a ‘wine mark’ that was displayed on his face? How would that impact his appeal to the women of the ‘ton’, let alone society in general? For we all know, even to this day, how the ‘appearance’ of someone tends to impact our perceptions.

“Promise me you will be a man untouched by pride and unruffled by the those who would judge you by your appearance?” (quote from the book)

This variation does just that. It is heartbreaking to have to grow up as a child and be tormented by others for just this reason. Mr. George Wickham in particular was cruel and demeaning. Lady Anne helped her son to look deeper and act honorably. It didn’t help though that his father saw it as a stain against him.

“Let us reflect upon the past only insofar as its memories grant us clarity and fortitude. To ignore discomfort or pain that we have endured is not remedy. Tis only in acknowledging our trials that we may lay them to rest.” (quote from the book)

As a grown man, Darcy has learned how to hide the pain these reactions and comments have on him. When he visits Mr. Bingley at Netherfield Park, he attends the local assembly knowing how others will react. He has yet to find a woman who looks beyond his appearance and cringe. Elizabeth Bennet’s reaction is one who does. Watching these two learn about each other was a delight. Watching the slightly altered dynamics of the Bennet family was as well.

I loved the growth of Mary in this story and the impact Charlotte Lucas has on Mr. Collins. And despite the heartache involved when Elizabeth and Darcy have their misunderstanding – or at least Mr. Darcy does – this is a gentle tale. One that I do recommend.

This is a story with a lesson for all of us. We must look deeper at those we meet instead of their outward appearance. We may be surprised at what we find.

Lovely

A rather sweet and poignant variation inspired by Jane Austen’s classic novel Pride and Prejudice by MJ Stratton. I enjoyed it

I liked the idea of the story, but the misunderstanding between Darcy and Elizabeth at the ball felt contrived. It was another story where one conversation would have resolved the issue, but Darcy was too much of a coward to talk to Elizabeth, so he ran away. Darcy and Elizabeth are separated in the story for months. This made the story frustrating for me.

3.5-stars rounded up.

Lovely!

An endearing story that portrays a different circumstance for Darcy, and presents a love born of looking beyond the surface. Masterfully written!

Such a sweet and unique Pride and Prejudice variation. I loved the premise and the way Elizabeth loved Darcy completely, even with a physical imperfection. The adoration Darcy had for Elizabeth was so tender. Lady Catherine was a complete shrew and got her just due in the end. There were many happy endings....Jane, Mary. Anne de Bourgh and of course Elizabeth. Highly recommend this P&P variation!

Another excellent variation from Stratton. This is an interesting in-depth exploration of the long-term impacts of the kind of careless disparagement of appearance Mrs. Bennet routinely indulges. This time it's Darcy, and it not only wounds but impairs his judgement. The happy ending is long coming but, never fear, it will arrive.

Elizabeth's father has taught her to look on the heart of a person rather than on the appearance. He himself learned this after marrying his wife who was a beauty but not his equal in character.
When Darcy therefore arrives with the Netherfield Party, Elizabeth not only sees his appearance - he has a portwine birthmark on his cheek and a broken nose and a long scar covering his face - but his character. For Darcy this is a new experience, normally he is the recipient of cruel remarks and especially ladies only befriend him because of his fortune. But Elizabeth is different. Darcy is drawn to her and the two for a friendship. Soon both are secretly sure that they want more than just friendship. But at the Netherfield Ball Darcy overhears a conversation between Elizabeth and her friend Charlotte that shatters his trust in Elizabeth and he hastily flees to London.
Has Elizabeth truly betrayed the trust he had in her? Will this overheard conversation end their love before it really begins? Or is it all a great misunderstanding?

This variation was very well written by the author MJ Stratton. I always like her variations very much and this one is no exception.

Darcy is in this variation more vulnerable than ever. Due to a portwine birthmark, a broken nose and a long scar he is not as handsome as usual. Due to his appearance many people look down on him or treat him with disgust. Those who befriend him often do it to gain flavours or are after his fortune. It's therefore not surprising that he needs time to trust others and that he often assumes the worst.
I'm glad that he finally finds Elizabeth. He feels secure with her, he can tell her everything. She sees behind his mask of indifference and can tell that the remarks about his appearance hurt him. I was so sorry for Darcy when he thinks that Elizabeth does not deserve his trust after all after he overhears a conversation between Elizabeth and Charlotte. I really can feel his heartbreak and his loneliness in this situation. I'm so glad that they found a way in the end to reconcile.

In Jane Austen's original Elizabeth is quick to judge everyone in a moment's notice and therefore her assessment is sometimes wrong. I really like that, in this variation, she takes her time to come to know Darcy. Due to this she is able to see the real man behind the mask, the man she falls in love with. I really like that she is not like the others judging Darcy by his appearance. She is curious, to be sure, but not unkind towards him.

I really like that Darcy's family and Bingley are supportive of Darcy and later of Darcy and Elizabeth. I also like that Mr Bennet, Jane and Mary as well as the Gardiners do not judge Darcy for his appearance but for his actions. And his actions leave nearly nothing to be desired (only his mistrusting Elizabeth without proof was not his best action).

I always like stories where Mary is more in the focus. This is the case here. Jane is occupied with her own love story, therefore Mary and Elizabeth become close and it's Mary who accompanies Elizabeth to town to stay with her aunt and uncle after her heartbreak and help her see things more clearly.

There are no villains in this variation who try to separate ODC, their separation is of their own making. But there are nevertheless people who tread Darcy very cruelly due to his appearance and who are not very nice.

If you like to know how the relationship between Darcy and Elizabeth develops when Darcy is not as handsome as in Jane Austen's original, you should read this excellent book.

I highly recommend it.

Very unique and poignant story.

Darcy is born with a prominent birthmark, a port wine stain that covers much of his face. His father favors Wickham’s good looks and Darcy is made to feel defensive and unloved. His mother attempts to help him understand that he is a wonderful person no matter his physical appearance. As he attains adulthood he is overlooked by society and only pursued for his wealth and status. His aunt, Lady Catherine, also wants to push Darcy and Anne together because both have a similar genetic mark and she considers them both to be unlovable and unmarriageable so they might as well marry each other.

Elizabeth has been taught by her father to look past external factors and base her opinions on a person’s heart and character. As a result when Darcy comes to Meryton with Bingley, Elizabeth is captivated by Darcy’s honor, good heart and gentlemanly behavior. He in turn is bewitched by her beauty and wit and the fact that she appears to see him, not his wealth and position. A promising relationship blooms. Elizabeth is unsure if she is enough for him given her lack of wealth and connections. Meanwhile, Darcy has been disappointed with false friendships and admiration and fears to believe Elizabeth’s feelings are true. He does decide to propose at Bingley’s ball. He is approaching her while she speaks with Charlotte and overhears a conversation seemingly about himself and Elizabeth’s true feelings which are exactly what he has heard from others his whole life. Her words awaken his fears that he will never be accepted and that her admiration was false. Brokenhearted, he leaves Netherfield without a word, leaving Elizabeth brokenhearted in his wake.

Thanks to Richard and Bingley, Darcy gets to reconsider his impressions of that conversation and resolves to find Elizabeth and apologize. But will she listen to him when he does? This tale also shows echoes of Mary’s treatment by her mother, due to her looks, and the repercussions to that young lady’s self perception as a result. Very much worth reading.

I loved it!

It was so enticing that I couldn’t put it down, this book grabbed my interest from the very first page. I couldn’t put it down, I had to know what happened next. The story is well written with a very good storyline. You will see the most beloved characters in a whole new way. This is a Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice variation. This is a part of the Darcy and Elizabeth Variations series. This Darcy and Elizabeth Pride and Prejudice variation is a sweet, low-angst story where beauty is more than skin deep, and a happily ever after is assured.

Elizabeth Bennet's father has raised her to value a person's character more than their appearance. He learned the hard way that physical beauty can conceal poor behaviour, an error he made in marrying his wife. Determined not to repeat Mr. Bennet's mistake, Elizabeth resolves to judge people by more than outward appearances. Understanding comes, and he must now seek forgiveness from the only lady who has ever loved him. So with all that and more this story pulls you in and holds you tight. It’s a must read. I highly recommend to everyone.

This variation follows the timeline of canon, but with many little tweaks. After a bit of background of Darcy's youth, it starts with the Meryton assembly. Darcy is not the handsome man we know from countless other variations. He bears a birthmark, a scar, and a broken nose, the latter two thanks to Wickham. Society views him with disgust and avoidance. He has coped since childhood with people feeling uncomfortable in his presence. Having been taught by her father to look beyond the external to see the real character beneath, Elizabeth charms him with her attention.

They grow closer with conversations on Oakham Mount and almost come to an understanding. At the Netherfield ball, Darcy overhears and misinterprets a conversation between Elizabeth and Charlotte. He is shattered, causing a crisis that will take months to sort out. I'm not fond of misunderstanding tropes. Darcy was wrong to flee without facing up to the situation. His deep-seated insecurity about his appearance caused him to doubt Elizabeth's sincerity. His own father had rejected him because of it. This gave the situation a bit more credibility than it would have had with a handsome Darcy.

The issue of living with a birthmark is handled realistically and sensitively. It's a life-long struggle, which few people can understand. There is some understandable misinformation, however, about port wine stain birthmarks. In the book, several members of the Fitzwilliam lineage have them. They are presented as hereditary, but they are not. While some more serious vascular anomalies have a genetic component, a PWS appears sporadically.

I enjoyed this unique premise and recommend it. Lovely cover.

This story was an interesting take where Mr. Darcy is not the beautiful and attractive man we all have believed him to be. Born with a wine stain mark, he struggles to find a woman who will love him for who he is. Plagued by his father's expectations, George Wickham's brutality, and society's attraction to only his wealth, we meet a jaded man. Enter Elizabeth, whose father has admonished her to look for a husband with a good heart and to not make the same mistakes he did.

I enjoyed the sweet friendship that Darcy and Elizabeth created over the course of the story. Due to Mr. Bennet's good advice, Elizabeth was immediately able to look past the physical features of Darcy to see into his heart. It was hard to see Darcy struggle with the belief in Elizabeth attraction to his person. With all of that baggage, Darcy made a terrible mistake, and I wanted to wring his neck! The missed communication lasted for quite some time in the story. Be prepared to be frustrated!

I like how the wine stain mark was passed on through the Fitzwilliam line. It made the story cohesive, that Darcy was not the only one suffering from people's harsh commentary. It might even be the thing that softened Elizabeth's heart towards him after his big fumble.

I like any story where Elizabeth and Darcy find their way through obstacles and into each other's arms. This was an interesting and unique variation, with a few continuity issues, but overall, a solid and enjoyable storyline.

Overall beautiful!

This is a sweet & beautiful story on how we all need to look past the outer shell to see the person on the inside. It also explores how those around us can damage or lift each other up.

I loved that in this story Darcy had a prominent birthmark that others in his family line had as well. The attitudes and expectations on both sides of his family were touched upon, You could feel the emotional hurt that a child feels trying to live up to parental expectations. Darcy has dealt with society and their judgments for so long that it is second nature to question people‘s motives. This doubt snd questioning does pose an issue between him and Elizabeth. Thankfully, he’s got somebody to smack him up the side of his head to look at the truth.

Mr. Bennet was great in this story as he had taught or tried to teach his family to look beyond the outer shell. I also enjoyed that Mary had a more significant role.

Overall, this is a beautiful story that I will read again .

Remember, to look on the heart!

It is soothing to read stories of this genre, which also includes ‘No Less Than Any Other’ by the same author. Like a cuppa, works wonders on a slightly gloomy day. There is clearly something Ms Stratton wishes to convey through her works and IMHO she has done a brilliant job.

Spoilers
The self-doubting Darcy is new to us hence the self-denial and fleeing from the scene. Yet under the background and premise of this story, it does not seem awkward to me.
The plot of eavesdropping and misunderstanding may have been with us fans of JAFF for some time; however, the logic that the colonel persuaded Darcy that he had gotten it all wrong is a new take which I like very much.
The concept of logic has revolved through the passage of time for sure.
To think that in canon, Charlotte had welcomed Elizabeth’s visit with open arms, knowing her best friend was her husband’s first choice. The pragmatism, the real life and the limited power of women back then was huge. And here I enjoyed the remedy very much.

A different take on Pride and Prejudice.
Mr Darcy has a big birthmark on his face and neck and recently he also has a big scar. The scar was inflicted by Wickham after the failed elopement with his much younger sister.
So he has some insecurities and Wickham loves to taunt him. The birth marks runs in the family both the Earl of Matlock and Anne de Bourgh have them. Which is one more reason why Lady Catherine wants Darcy and Anne to marry.

He is still pursued by the ladies, but only due to his wealth.
Luckily Elizabeth has been taught to value a persons character rather than there appearance by her father. Who fell for Mrs Bennets beauty only to be disapointed by her character. They are drawn to each other from the start.

The story is fairly low angst, though I found the misunderstanding, that leads to angst in the end, was quite stupide.

Mr Bennet married a beauty who revealed an unpleasant personality.
Thus, he taught his daughters to see beyond surface attractions and recognise the heart within.

Fitzwilliam Darcy is rich, intelligent and connected to nobility.
The presence of a large birthmark on his face, has made him the object of cruelty, suspicion and rejection.
Even worse, the ladies of the Ton are simultaneously desirous of his wealth and position, while being repelled by his countenance.

When Fitzwilliam Darcy meets Elizabeth Bennet, he is stunned to find that she genuinely sees past his appearance to the man inside.

This is a beautiful romance, with a period of angst and reconciliation.

Thoroughly delightful.

In Look on the Heart, Darcy has a birth mark on his face which affects his self esteem and as a result, he is not proud as in canon. This leads to a growing friendship between OCD. I found the story sweet and romantic. I loved Darcy and Elizabeth's scenes together. They were very moving. Darcy and Elizabeth's characterization in the story is wonderfully done. Elizabeth is wonderful. As Darcy notices quite quickly, she is compassionate, kind, witty and loyal. Darcy, following his experience, is kind and not judgmental. He also has a great sense of justice. He immediately sees Elizabeth's worth. I enjoyed this variation very much. I found it touching and very engaging. It is a lovely read.

I would give 5 stars but after Darcy finally done his apology the story began to proceed quickly. After so much of Darcy's regret and Elizabeth's hurt, you may thought the scene would be more eloquent and detailed, or more emotional. But it ended rather flat.
Then their renewed courtship was short and sweeping. We were told Darcy regained Elizabeth's trust and they got to know each other better. But there was no description.
When I read the last three chapters, I could clearly sense a difference in the choice of words and sentence structures compared to the earlier parts. It gave me a bad reading experience.
However, this is a very good read with only minor flaws.

A very unusual and interesting variation

This author has firmly established herself within this genre and is becoming well appreciated for her willingness to write variations which push the boundaries just a little whilst remaining authentic.

I very much enjoyed this variation and felt that the characters were generally true to form as well as true to their changed circumstances. The writing is smooth and the story flows well.

There were a couple of minor continuity errors but these did not diminish from the reading experience.

P&P isn't P&P if there isn't some sort of miscommunication of some sort between ODC and we get one here through some eavesdropping. I must say that I liked this Elizabeth more than in most variations, Mary was great with a bigger role. And then we have Darcy, who while still privileged still didn't have it easy. He was more humble and quite understandably more wary.
I quite liked this and this has made it onto my to-be-reread pile.

A Sweet Heartfelt Story

I loved this story of a less confident Darcy who was nervous about putting himself forward in a crowd because of a birthmark. Elizabeth I kind and caring and less interested in a perfect face because she had been taught by her father to pay attention to inner person. This book proves to be a valuable lesson for all; what matters is our inner person more so than our outer appearance.

MJ is one of my favorite authors and I read everything she publishes as soon as I can. This book will be added to my favorites list.

Nicely done!

A fascinating plot offers a Darcy with a disfiguring port wine stain on his face which results in a far less arrogant and conceited man with many attendant problems. The villain here is a lack of self-esteem, tangled up with some misunderstandings caused by eavesdropping. Our dear couple have many sweet and romantic moments, Bingley is strong and charming, Jane is perfect, Wickham is foiled, and a nasty Lady Catherine is frustrated. Very entertaining.

A wonderful story, as usual from this author. I enjoyed it very much. I was not happy with Darcy's abandoning Elizabeth after misunderstanding an overheard conversation - it felt a bit too contrived just to give the author an excuse to separate them, which was annoying - I almost took off a star for that, but overall I loved the book as it emphasizes how important it is to understand a person's actual character, not just how they appear.

Another great story from MJ Stratton about love that he extends beyond superficial. There was a misunderstanding between ODC, but they overcame it.
I loved that Mary had a chance to blossom and have HEA, together with Jane and Elizabeth.
Highly recommended.
