About the author

Umera Ahmed is one of the most widely-read and popular Urdu fiction novelist and screenplay writer of this era.
She completed her Masters in English Literature from Murray College, Sialkot. Later she became an English language lecturer for the students of O and A levels at Army Public College, Sialkot. However she left the job a few years back in order to devote her full attention to writing.
She began her writing career in 1998 at a quite young age. Her initial stories were published in monthly urdu digests and later came out in the form of books. She has written about 16 books , comprising of complete novels and compilations of short stories. However it was her novel "Peer-e-Kaamil (S.A.W.W)" which became her identity.

DNFed.

The only reason it's not one star is because I enjoyed the writing to some extent. Also, I did read a lot of pages which indicate that I didn't entirely hate it. But it was really annoying. I didn't like how the characters felt out-of-character and how the story went to another level. It was just so unrealistic and so forceful. I went into slumps due to this and then I put it aside. Maybe one day I'll read it again, but possibly not.

Let me know if it's worth another chance and I might try to dive into it again. It was just so opposite to the first one (which pulled me in and did't let my interest waver).

The expressions in her eyes, the changing hues on her face, the movement of her lips, the sparkle in her laughter as she spoke, the colors blooming on her face—he felt like a mesmerized spectator sitting in the front row of a cinema. Leaning on his elbow, half-reclined, he watched her closely. When she grew tired, she would rest her head on his shoulder and say, "Okay, let's sleep now."
She must have said that line at least twenty-five times.
Resting her head on his shoulder again, she'd suddenly remember something, lift her head, and look at his face, asking, "Did I tell you about…?"
Salar would shake his head, and the conversation would start again from the same point. The silent listener would resume watching "that same" film.

Starting off, there's much to be said about this book which will gradually unfold. I have my compliments and appreciation as well as my issues and concerns (which I AM going to give rant to) but my honest opinion is that Umera has outdone herself. The plot has gotten so much better, I have got to say. As she herself has said, that in its way, this book is idealistic but I say we do need ideals to build upon, badly.
It's hard but I am going to try to be very sincere with my review, and it is going to offend like I was offended by the book many a time. I liked the book but I cannot say I loved the book because I did not. I am going to write what I felt, my truth, the good and the bad.
Aab-e-Hayat was well-researched and the references were well placed, I thoroughly enjoyed them where expression was good except at points when bad grammar was used, it sounded like name-dropping or the use of English seemed pretentious.
I had mixed feelings reading this novel, the story did have its pull, some parts I felt the same as I felt while reading Peer-e-Kamil صَلَّى ٱللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ, like old times but others I felt really annoyed at the writing, maybe I was angry at it being less like Peer-e-Kamil صَلَّى ٱللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ than I had imagined but it had its problems and I had my reasons.
The best thing about this book was its conscious effort against the abolishment of usury, I am very proud of and heartily praise Umera's efforts on this behalf. This is a very positive step although it may seem idealistic but it's definitely not shallow or naïve.
Peer-e-Kamil صَلَّى ٱللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ was essentially a love story, I think this is an uncontested opinion and the reason why it has been the apple of everyone's eyes, myself included, albeit giving a subtle but a very strong message. But Aab-e-Hayat transcends that, it's a neatly and deftly woven tapestry of interconnected stories, people, and timelines. It gives answers to many questions left unanswered and ties the loose ends in Peer-e-Kamil صَلَّى ٱللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ which I wanted so much to hear.
Imama and Salar have had their love story told, they are finally together and now they have to decide what kind of a life they are going to lead together. They begin their journey together not without a few bumps along the road but love triumphs and religion conquers all, sounds very deus ex machina, doesn't it. It's all very nice and gooey and romantic but for someone like me, it seems a little pretentious and a little too easy. But, again, the question we all have to ask ourselves is that is it not what we all want in a novel. For a fact, the thing that bothered me with this novel the most was that why it was not more of a romance, why didn't it have the fairy-tale twists and turns of Peer-e-Kamil صَلَّى ٱللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ.
What bugged me was the painful detail in the first few chapters, maybe it's just that all the build up was killing me, maybe I had grown up a little since Peer-e-Kamil صَلَّى ٱللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ but it did bother me and struck me as strange. It felt a bit like milking it.

The start seemed at odds to where we left off in Peer-e-Kamil صَلَّى ٱللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ. I just cannot bring myself to understand how, even once, can Salar act indifferent like that, so soon after he finally has got the love of his life in his life. The courtship is sweet but the jealousy is just not cutting it, it was just a bit over the line. Maybe I'm an over-zealous fan of the Imama-Salar enterprise (who isn't), I understand that with the storyline it really was hard to accommodate, it was done with grace but I think the gap between the two books could've been better bridged, another incident of the success of a franchise going to people's heads maybe (on both sides).
Another grievance I have with Aab-e-Hayat or may be Umera is that why is she so, oh-so-typical at times. I cringed every time she said something like being a man/woman he/she couldn't say/do, seriously, is this not the 21st century!, why can't/shouldn't we say what we feel like. Like I love her and all, she is my idol as a writer, she can awaken keen sensations in me and drive me to tears but this bias, this stereotyping, it gets on my nerves. She is progressive, she is portraying women as strong but why do they have to be so typical like Imama can leave her home and family as a consequence of changing her religion but there's not even a mention of her giving up her job or talk/thinking about it like it's the obvious choice because now she has got an MRS!. She can seek refuge from her family with strangers for freedom of religion but she cannot help Salar in the biggest venture of his life more than giving him advice and looking after his family like she can have no role besides being a housewife. And, y'all please tell me, is there not another respectable profession besides business and medicine?. Because Umera's writing is making me think that if Imama were a doctor, not a chemist she would've been a more active contributor to society (I rolled my eyes so many times). Now, I know this is happening in our society, all the time, it's the plain truth but COULD YA NOT? Come on, yar!, no disrespect, but have you not heard the expression WOMEN HAVING IT ALL! And then, when we hear that Anaya has never had any male friends much less close male friends because SHE has been brought up like that when at the same time it's no big deal that her older brother Jibreel has been making female friends freely, ungrudgingly and can go see a woman alone at her apartment, and her younger brother can have girl-friends from an early age, Umera! that is misogynistic, sexist and discriminatory of you, okay, no matter what people say or do in our society, it is wrong.
Another point that really gutted me was how could Imama take palmistry so lightly, Salar be shaking hands with women, holding and giving his name to a girl who was not his child, and Jibreel be holding hands with Ayesha, given their background and after mention after mention of the proper application of religion.
Another thing really troubling me is that it should have been explained why it was questionable for a non-Muslim to be allowed to touch and read the Arabic text of Qur'an to prevent the possibility of misleading the unaware reader because:
The prophet صَلَّى ٱللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ said:
(لا يمس القرآن إلا طاهر)
No one touches the Quran except if you are clean.
We all also know of the Hadith where Omar's sister asked him to make Wudu before reading the reading the Quran when he was a non-Muslim and the opinion of certain scholars like Ibn Abideen Shami (RA) is that non-Muslims are obliged to perform a ritual bath for touching it. (Raddul Muhtar p.119 v.1 & Fatawa Hindiyyah p.323 v.5).
Another thing I have to say is that given that they live in America and all, Imama wears hijab, her husband and eldest son are Hafiz-e-Qur'an (have memorized the Qur'an) and their household is quite religious but the girls' appearance remained unaffected by the environment in their home. It really stung when Raeesa went to visit her father in JAIL in a tee and jeans but with an Allah PENDANT. And isn't Hameen financially backing Raeesa's intended's enemies so that she can have the marriage she wants wrong?
Having said all that, the novel is not without its merits. I just want to point out the demerits with the merits. It has its issues but the novel is well-rounded and resourceful.
I loved that the love of Salar and Imama was beyond everything, growing stronger every minute, though I would have liked to watch them getting there, talking more about the old days, reminiscing the circumstances that lead them together. I wanted to hear the lovers talk, their whispers but, apparently that's not the Pakistani Urdu novelist's style.
This is not Salar and Imama's story, this is the story of posterity.
The story of Saad's (Salar's friend from Yale's days) family was a cautionary tale for me. It presented a frightening side of our society, I was scared for myself. I loved how Umera was willing to talk about the horrors and the dark side of our society, it was a bold step using almost the exact harsh and curse words, to tell the truth. It was very cool that Saad finally had his redemption after and through another generation. But what baffles me, is that, all these people knowing more about religion than apparently anyone else, as the author herself has said, could be so misguided. Seems a little judgemental and needs more thinking and exploration into the heart of the matter. The answer cannot be that simple. And her disapproval of veiled women doesn't escape the notice either. She should've set her bias aside before sitting to write his book.
The redemption of characters was exemplary, the mention of old home, Alzheimer's and the family reunion was very apt, it really hit the mark. All the time I thought Salar was going to die but to my hidden relief he didn't. But, what I think would have been poetic justice and more realistic, even if I agree with Umera's vision for her character as well was for Salar to have succumbed to disease and for Imama specially and his children, the boys and the girls, to carry on his legacy.
The best part is Dr. Sibt-e-Ali and Salar's long talk on usury, it was definitely a phenomenal part of the book like its counterparts in Peer-e-Kamil صَلَّى ٱللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ. I loved it so much just like I loved Imama's perpetual counsel to Salar on the topic.
It irritated me that how could Imama could be so naïve and misguided so as to ask Salar for not a house but a whole state after having been married for such a short time. I asked myself, after going through all those hardships, how could she be so greedy, it was just so incomprehensible to me. But it was compensated very well by the end of the book.
And, someone tell me the sense of entitlement wealth brings like it was unbelievable how it was portrayed that no one can compare to the elite class in looks or even intelligence (or was I the only one who noticed/felt that). Even if Umera is essentially portraying the characters as enjoying the fruits of their hard work but it is an undeniable fact that they are coming from privileged backgrounds. I felt that the rich are entitled to even their IQ's. Maybe my looking lens is clouded with judgement but I just couldn't bring myself to reconcile with this image.
One a separate note, the other things I liked was that despite their differences and reservations eventually, it was finally okay marrying a divorcée, people from different nationalities and a relatively new convert. It was refreshingly unconventional.
Raeesa going back to find her roots, clearing Salar's name was definitely a very bold and a good choice. Her social work was a nice touch, the icing on the cake. I really enjoyed her storyline.
Umera portrayed the Western society quite accurately and I was really impressed with the CIA breaking the engaged couple apart, it really was amusing as much as it was clever and accurate. Umera's knowledge and research about secret agencies is impressive.
Overall it was an absorbing, engaging and somewhat eye-opening read. I am better for having read it.
Maybe I am biased, maybe it's hard for me to be objective but these are the things I felt and I have to be true to myself. I am sorry if I inadvertently hurt someone by my opinions. I would love to know your opinions and please tell me if you find any loopholes in my review.

Can we talk about how childish Umera Ahmed has shown Imama’s character to be. Like she expects salar to send her to Islamabad and live in Lahore himself happily, and for him to be chill with her mentioning her ex 🤡. How can Umera Ahmed bring such a drastic change in her personality? She literally left her dream career and her house behind for the right path (sirat-ul-mustaqeem), and lived a plain and normal lifestyle then how can she be so materialistic. It feels like Imama’s personality has a taken a full 360 degree turn. And to think that this girl wanted to be a doctor, she wouldn’t even be able to survive one day in the hospital with all her whining 💀

Also let’s not forget her always crying for the family that literally beat her within an inch of her life. From whom to protect herself she had to change her whole identity. I get that she missed them, and was sad about whatever happened, but being more worried about your father and brother that stabbed your husband and wanted to drag you back to home to do god knows what to you, than your husband who cares about you and loves you more than life and almost died. Are you okay? This girl is more worried about her baap bhai ki izzat than the family that welcomed her into their home with open arms and went through all kinds of problems just to keep her safe.

Imama from Aab e hayat is actually the worst character I have ever read, Imama from Peer-e-Kamil might have deserved Salar but Imama from Aab-e-Hayat does not AT ALL. Jalal Ansar hi is ke liye theek tha. She’s a selfish person who starts crying the minute things don’t go her way, and the way Umera Ahmed tries to justify her illogical actions and thoughts is ultimately the most irritating part. It’s as if Umera Ahmed saw how good Peer-e-kamil did and all the love it got, and decided to cash that out by writing aab e hayat.

Tried reading it again and failed yet again 🥴

Finally finished this one, legit took me a whole month to get through it 😭. And yes I finally do get why everyone is saying that Imama gets better later on, that the story gets better later on. But in all honesty I found it really difficult to read beyond Imama’s initial immaturity and a lack of a plot line and just turn a blind eye towards it. In the first quarter to half of the book the plot was just Imama getting mad at salar, crying, and then not even caring to clear the misunderstanding between them, their relationship felt more of like a one sided one that only salar carried on. Yes it gets a bit better, and Umera Ahmed did tackle multiple social issues of our Muslim society. However, still at the end I felt like it’s not justified to expect your readers to just power through a book because it gets better later on. The fact that you make it better after a poor start shouldn’t be an excuse for poor character and plot development.

All in all this was an ok read, but definitely not one I would read again or recommend, because personally for me it just ruined the whole feel of the story that was set in peer e kamil.

Unrealistic characters. Two extremes. Either too good or too bad. The entire novel revolves around "wo hil nahi saki thi" and crying episodes.
We didn't get some answers.
- What did Salar wish inside Ka'aba? They both appeared to know it but readers don't.
- What was the writer trying to convey in the last paragraph where a neurosurgeon was performing surgery?
- What does TAASH and AAB E HAYAT have to do with the whole story? I think it only created hype but couldn't unfold in that manner.
- For what "baray kaam" exactly "chunni" was chosen? I didn't really find any relevance in that. It was like digging a mountain to find a rat.
- Imama gives out a hint to Humain about Raeesa. She says "Raeesa" achi larki hai, Humain didn't apparently get it but the her intention was not addressed.

Overall, it was very typical stuff with Salar's brain tumor, Humain's narrow escape, Chunni's adoption and everything that could go right for one family!

The only thing I liked about this story is that it highlighted the other side of "practicing" Muslims. Not every practicing Muslim is a good human being. We fall for the stereotypes and they exploit our respect for them. People who try to judge who's going to hell and who's entitled to heaven, those who hurt others in the name of Islam and don't get the essence of Islam beyond the idea of being allowed to have 4 wives. This needed to be highlighted.

Won't recommend this book to anyone as the story doesn't have any plot just a few characters of previous book around which a long book has been made still wonder what was the point in making a part 2, Well I hope there is no any part 3 coming up (plz no) or sequel of anyother Umera Ahmed's masterpieces in the pipeline.

1 star just because it is sequel of Peer-e-Kamil as the writer said so while in reality the story is quite opposite though Not even remotely related to the charm Peer-e-Kamil had ^-^

Aab-e-Hayat (Elixir of Life) was probably the most awaited novel in Pakistan after its phenomenal and life-changing prequel Peer-e-Kamil ﷺ. Peer-e-Kamil ﷺ was and remains to this day one of the most influential saga for our generation, that inspired, intrigued and then transformed many lives.

When I first heard of it's publication I was overcome by a sense of ambivalence; a part of me was excited to know what she had in store for the readers as a sequel for almost everyone's favourite novel but at the same time a part of me was scared that it might not live up to the standards set by its prequel. Despite all this, I decided to give it a read and after twenty-five months of reading the sequel I'll say I'm still as ambivalent as I was before I started reading it.

The first episode served more as a teaser and was very promising bythe look of it. Knowing Umera Ahmed and her skills, and getting glimpse in terms of ‘taash kay pattay’ i.e playing cards, one remains assured it will be a novel par excellence. The cards comprised as follows and the characters' lives were divided in the sequence followed by the cards
Alif: Adam aur Havva (Adam and Eve)
Bay: Bait-ul-Ankaboot (House of spider)
Hay: Hasil-o-Mehsool (The acquired and the toll)
Yay: Ya Mujeeb-us-Sayileen (O You Who answers to prayers)
Alif: Abdan abada (The Eternal)
Tay: Tabarak-alladhi (The Blessed)

Coming to the story itself, the whole idea of the novel was based on the 'Aakhri Khutba' (The last sermon delivered by Prophet ﷺ). It gave an in-depth analysis in the life of Salar and Imama post marriage. It showed how their family grew, how their kids' lives unwound and the turn their own lives took, it showed the sacrifices both Imama and Salar made, their struggles, the obstacles they overcame and most all how both of them together recognized the hazards of interest based economic system and their struggles to eradicate it from the society. The sequel also answered all unanswered questions from the prequel such as the fate of Hashim family, Ahsan Saad's life and the course it takes and so on.

If you'd ask me I'd say this is not the sequel Peer-e-Kamil ﷺ deserved but it still wasn't the worst sequel ever. I particularly fell in love with each and everyone of their kids and how each character complimented the other so well. Humain was my favourite character among all the characters introduced in the sequel.

The reason why this book failed to live up to my expectations was primarily that after Peer-e-Kamil as a reader I had raised my bar of expectations too high. Apart from that, Umera Ahmed incorporated a bit too many supernatural details in the story which didn't seem very practical. However, the most disappointing part of the story was the climax, 'Turp ka Patta'(Life which is continued with new challenges). I'm still not sure about the end because it was very ambiguous and left a lot of questions unanswered.

All in all, even if Aab-e-Hayat wasn't the best book penned down by Umera Ahmed then it certainly wasn't the worst either. The characters in the story are just as much humans as we are and so is the author so a little margin should be given to everyone.

I wasn't not Novel addict but after reading Pir-E-Kamil & Aab-E-Hayat by Umera Ahmed I'm becoming Novel hunter.

Dnf @ 23% (Slightly spoilerish, but only up to 23% mark)

It is becoming increasingly difficult for me to finish this novel, since there is nothing gripping about this story. The only plot up till now is how much Umama is insecure about her new life and how much Salar is in love with his wife and how perfect his is. Problem is I've read and liked such novel where only plot revolve around the love life of two main leads but what's really off putting in this love story is a) its boring and b) the character of Umama.

You know in the beginning of PK, Umama's friend asked 'What she wants most in life?' and she replied 'To be a doctor'. And her friend said 'What would you do, if you don't become one?' and Umama replied; 'I'll die'. That's really what's happened in this novel, that Umama has died. Now in her place is a women who is weak, feels she is useless, is insecure and dependent, always in need of approval from Salar and cries A LOT. That strong, resourceful and independent girl is lost somewhere in between PK and AH. She sulk a lot and cry a lot and for most childish things ever!! She sulk because Salar didn't say good morning, or had breakfast with her or say she looks pretty in blue while she was wearing purple etc etc... the list goes on, it was seriously very frustrating to read those parts. But perhaps, the most crazy character trait of Umama (which apparently shaped her character as per author) is that she love to read Engilsh/American novels and not the good kind. She loves to read adult romance and has read up to 1500 to 2000 romance novels and as per Salar's monologue, 'not good ones but really cheap and dirty ones'. Now I've read some 300 books and romance is my favorite genre and I've my fair share of some cheap and dirty ones as well but after 1500 'cheap' romance novel, you got to have to read some from E. L. James, Silvia day or Belle Aurora etc. She not only read these but cherish all 1500 of her books as well, and while reading places herself as female lead and Jalal as male lead, no wonder she is messed-up in the upper department. For me this is all very unexpected from Umama who fell in love with Jalal after hearing his 'Naat'. After reading and re-reading these love stories for past nine year, she has very immature and unrealistic expectation from her marriage. She has a dream house, where all animals live together and gentle streams of water flow nearby her house. After admitting this dream and asking Salar to make her a dream home, Salar gives her are-you-crazy look and says her demands are impossible to meet, she immediately shuts off and thinks he is making fun of her dreams. But everything aside, this novel lost its magic because it looses the the ishq e Haqiqi aspect. Story and Characters lost their connection with Allah, Umama more so that other. This made characters very bland with burst of awesomeness here and there. The whole package of Ish-e-Haqiqi and Ishq-e-Majazi is what made me love PK so much.

I might pickup this novel some other time. So much charm is lost in the transition, but I want to know why writer wrote AH.

Background
I would be one of those rare people who read Aab-e-Hayat first, and then followed up with Peer-e-Kamil. This was getting published for more than two years. I didn't read any of the episodes becuase I got to read only when I visited home and the rhythm just was not building when I read any episode at random.
Review
Both books are beautiful and epic. It is undeniably the fiction that inspires and affects the soul so deeply that you can't resist a transformation within.
The story of Salaar and Imama continues. What a perfect love story it is. I love how Umera has decribed their relationship. Salaar is one of those characters that you want for yourself, in real life. But alas, that can't be,
Their kids, each one and Humain in particular, are cute and adorable and sensible. And there are loads of funny, homely moments.
Then there is mystery, and uncertainty, and pain when Salaar's dream project is concerned. The way 'Akhri Khutba' is weaved into the fictional world is simply amazing. As Umera claims, the idea she presented may seem outrageous, but it is her idea and I totally agree that one should never leave hope for a better place for us muslims.
Why not five stars then? Cuz I didn't like the ending. It seemed abrupt, rushed, vague and bizzare. It also leaves a tiny hope of a further sequel. And that would be welcome cuz there are a few loose ends.

Although it is rather brilliant, I was rather disappointed in Umera Ahmad. I don't enjoy her writing as much any more. Likewise for Haalim by Nemrah Ahmad, but more on that later.

Don't be swayed by what I said. Just read it or you will regret it.

What is this genre? Contemporary epic fantasy?
Weak story line, poor turn of events throughout and and not even close to it's first part. It is the first book of one of my favorite authors I regret picking. I can write a speech on it but what is the use of it instead I will sum up in two words <"Pure disappointment">.

এই প্যারাটুকু মনে হয় উপন্যাসের পাঠকদের জন্য চুম্বক লাইন ছিল। তো, আল্লাহ্ সালার সিকান্দারের দোয়া কবুল করেছে। কারণ সালার বলেছিল,

Jaha log magfirat mangte hai.❜
পূর্ণ হৃদয় দিয়ে কিছু চাইলে আল্লাহ্ সেটা কবুল করেন। নন-প্র্যাক্টিসিং একজন মুসলমান থেকে বিশ্বাসী হয়ে ওঠার অপূর্ব এক যাত্রা ছিল বইটি।
যাক গে, বিয়ে শেষ, সালারের ইমামাকে পাওয়াও শেষ। শুরু হলো নতুন এক যাত্রা। অ মৃতের ধারা.....
রোজার মাস চলছিল। ইমামার প্রথম রাত সালারের ঘরে। কিন্তু হায়! সেহরির প্রায় শেষের সময়ে অ্যালার্ম শুনে ঘুম ভেঙে ইমামা দেখে পাশে সালার নেই। গেল কোথা?
ভেবেছিল প্রথম রাতের সেহরি একত্রে করবে। কিন্তু বাসার শেষ অবস্থা দেখে বোঝা যাচ্ছে সিকান্দার সাহেব কারো সাথে সেহরি খেয়ে ভাগছে। আর তার প্রিয় ইমামার জন্য অ্যালার্ম সেট করে খাবার রেখে গেছে। সেহরি করে নামাজ পড়ার পরেও স্বামী বাবাজির আসার নাম নাই। অপেক্ষা করতে করতেই ঘুমিয়ে গেল সে।
সকালে ঘুম ভেঙেও দেখে বাসা খালি। স্বামী অফিস চলে গেছে। নতুন বউ তাও কেঁদেকেটে যাকে হাসিল করলো তার সাথে এ কেমন আচরণ! ইমামা হতাশ। মানে রাতভরে যেসব আবেগ ঢাললো ওগুলো বেহুদা?
বিয়ের পরের জীবনটা এমন অদ্ভুত ভাবেই শুরু হলো। সালার পরে খোঁজ নিতে মেসেজ দিলেও ইমামার উত্তর দেয়ার পর বান্দা আবার কাজে নিখোঁজ। ইমামার মনে দুঃখ জমতে থাকে। সে সাইদা আম্মাকে সালারের নামে বিচারও দেয়। আম্মা সে কথা জানায় ডাক্তার সিবত-ই-আলীকে। ডাক্তার সাহেবের বাসায় ঐদিনের ইফতারির পর ইমামা সাইদা আম্মার বাসায় থেকে যেতে চাইলেও সালার তাকে তেমন বাঁধা দেয় না। এই কাজ করে নিজের পায়ে কুড়াল তো দিলই সাথে নিজের জন্য ক বর খুঁড়াও হয়ে গেল।
সালার বাবাজি জানে না যখন সে অফিসের কাজে মশগুল তখন তার বিরুদ্ধে কত অভিমান জমে আছে!
অবশেষে ডাক্তার সাহেব যখন সালারকে ডেকে ইমামার দেয়া অভিযোগ জানায় সালার হতবাক হয়ে যায়!
যাকে বিয়ে করে সালার এখন সাত আসমানে চড়ে গেছে তাকে নাকি সে অবহেলা করছে! খারাপ আচরণ করছে!
ইমামার সকল অভিযোগ আর অভিমান সালার ঠিক করে দেয়। কারণ বউ যতই রাগ করুক তাকে মানানোর দায়িত্ব স্বামীর। আর এটা যেনতেন কেউ নয়। এটা ইমামা হাশিম!
বিয়ের পরের সময়গুলো খুব রঙিন কাটে। ইমামারও তাই কাটছিল। এতদিন যে অন্যের ছায়ায় ছিল, একটা ভয়ে ছিল সালারকে বিয়ের পর যেন সেসব হতাশা, ভয়ের মেঘ কেটে গেছে। সালারের অবিরাম ভালোবাসা সবকিছু যেন স্বপ্নের মতো ছিল।
আল্লাহ্ চাইলে যে কাউকে রহমত দেন। যে সালার শুধু ফ্যান্টাসি হিসেবে মৃ ত্যুর সময় কেমন লাগে উপভোগ করতে চাইতো, ইসলামের কোনো নিয়ম মানতো না মাত্র নয় বছরের ব্যবধানে সেই একই ব্যক্তির আমূল পরিবর্তন কি শুধু একজন নারীর ভালোবাসা?
না, এটা আল্লাহর রহমত। উসিলা হতে পারে ইমামা। যে আল্লাহর পথে আসার জন্য সব ত্যাগ করেছে।
জীবনে এত সুখ থাকলেও আমাদের মাঝেমাঝে কী জানি হয়। আমরা অতীত ভুলতে পারি না। ইমামাও তাই। যে জালালকে সে ভালোবেসেছিল তাকে সে ভুলতে পারেনি। এমনকি সালারের নিঃস্বার্থ ভালোবাসাও প্রথম দিকে ইমামার সেই ভালোবাসা ভুলতে সাহায্য করেনি।
তাইতো হুট করে একদিন জালালের সাথে দেখা হলে ইমামার বর্তমান এলোমেলো হয়ে গেল। দেখা হওয়াটা নিয়তি ছিল। কিন্তু তার বদলে ইমামার জীবনের ফেইরি টেইলে ফাটল ধরেছিল অল্প হলেও। জালালের সাথে আচমকা দেখা হওয়ার ব্যাপারটা চাইলেই সে সালারকে জানাতে পারতো। বিবাহিত জীবনের শুরুর কয়েক মাসের মধ্যেই এমন ঘটনা সালারকেও নিদারুণ কষ্ট দেয়।
তবে এটা সালার যে ইমামার সাত খু নও মাফ করে দিতে রাজি।
সালার কর্মজীবনে সফল, ব্রিলিয়ান্ট হওয়ায় সে সব জায়গায় সোনা ফলায়। তেমনি নিজের কর্মক্ষেত্রেও সে একজন নক্ষত্র।
কিন্তু ইমামা যখন জানতে পারে সালার ব্যাংকিং সেক্টরের এমন একটা পদে আছে যেখানে সুদের কারবার। পশ্চিমা বিশ্বের জন্য এবং পুরো দুনিয়ায় এই একই নীতি এমনভাবেই ছড়িয়ে আছে কেউ এটা ছাড়া কিছু কল্পনা করতে পারে না।
সালার নিজেও জানে ইসলামে সুদকে হা রা ম করা হয়েছে। নিজে প্র্যাক্টিসিং মুসলিম হওয়া সত্ত্বেও নিজের কর্মজীবনের এই দিকটা সে কম্প্রোমাইজ করে।
এখানেই শুরু হয় ইমামা এবং সালারের দ্বিমত। ইমামা কোনোভাবেই চায়না সালার এই পথে থাকুক। সালারের শত যুক্তিও সে মানে না।
ইসলামী বিধান অনুযায়ী চলতে পারলে জীবনে সব প্রতিকূলতা জয় করা যায়। কিন্তু বিশ্ব যেখানে পশ্চিমা সভ্যতার হাতের মুঠোয় সেখানে একার চেষ্টা সফল হয় কি?
সময় এগিয়ে যায়। সালার এবং ইমামার জীবন নানা মোড়ে ঘুরতে থাকে। সালারের পরিবারের কাছেও ইমামা গ্রহণযোগ্য হয়ে যায় শুরুতেই। অবশ্যই এর পিছে অবদান সালারের।
জীবন ফুলসজ্জা নয়। তেমনি তাদের জীবনেও ঝড় আসে। ইমামা কি সালারকে ভালোবাসে? এর উত্তর সে নিজেও জানে না। কিন্তু সালারের উপস্থিতি, তার সঙ্গ উপভোগ করে।
এসবের মাঝেও ইমামা এবং সালার ইসলামাবাদ যায়। যেখানে সে ফেলে এসেছে তার অতীত। সব ভালোই যাচ্ছিল। কিন্তু কতদিন পাশের বাড়ির লোকের অগোচরে থাকা যায়?
সব সতর্কতার পরেও হাশিম মুবিনের মুখোমুখি হয় ইমামা এবং সালার। বলাই বাহুল্য সেই সম্মুখ দেখা উষ্ণ ছিল না।
জীবনে আরেকটা ঝড় আসে। হাশিম মুবিনের সাথে বোঝাপোড়া। কিন্তু এত বছর পরেও তাদের এই অপরিবর্তিত মনোভাব এবং ইমামার প্রতি বিন্দুমাত্র অনুভূতি না থাকলেও ইমামা পারেনি কঠোর হতে। সালারকে আঘাত করার পরেও সে নিজের র ক্তকে বিপদ থেকে বাঁচানোর আকুতি করেছে।
এতকিছুর পরেও হাশিম পরিবার থেকে কোনো সহানুভূতি আসেনি। তারা ক্ষতি করতে চেয়েছে। সালারের ���্কুলে যে আ গুন লেগেছিল তার পিছে কে ছিল?
এভাবেই একটা ঘটনা পেরিয়ে যায়। আগত হয় নতুন ঘটনা। পরিবারের কেউ ইমামাকে ক্ষমা না করলেও ইমামার ভাই তাকে ভোলেনি। ওয়াসিম চেয়েছিল ইমামার সাথে সম্পর্ক গোপনে রাখতে। কিন্তু সেটাও একটু আনন্দ দিতে গিয়ে শেষ হয়ে গেল।
আমেরিকায় ইমামা তখন সালারের সাথে। তাদের প্রথম সন্তান আসন্ন। এমন সময় ইমামা জানতে পারে তার ভাই ওয়াসিমের মৃ ত্যু সংবাদ। একজনই ছিল তার র ক্তসম্পর্কের যে তাকে ভালোবাসতো। সেটাও শেষ!
ইমামা এতটাই আঘাত পায় যে ভারসাম্য প্রায় হারিয়ে ফেলে। এই কঠিন সময়েও ইমামার ছায়া ছিল সালার।
কঠিন সময় আসে, চলে যায়।
পেরিয়ে গেছে প্রায় ছয়টা বছর। সালার বিশ্ব ব্যাংকের বড় পদে চাকরি করে কঙ্গো থাকছে পরিবার নিয়ে। তাদের ঘর আলো করে এসেছে জিব্রিল, ইনায়া এবং পৃথিবীর আলো দেখার অপেক্ষার শেষ প্রহর গুণছে হুমাইন।
আবার তাদের জীবনে আসছে ঝড়। বিশ্ব ব্যাংকের প্রজেক্ট এবং আফ্রিকায় মানবাধিকারের নামে যে দাসত্বের এবং দারিদ্র্যের রোলার কোস্টার চলছে তারই এক অংশ ছিল সালার। বিশ্ব ব্যাংকে যোগ দিয়েছিল মানুষের ভালো করার আশাতেই। কিন্তু প্রদীপের নিচেই থাকে অন্ধকার। ১৫০ আইকিউ অধিকারী সালার হয়তো সেটা বুঝতে পারেনি। যতক্ষণ না সে পেট্রিস ইবাকার দেখা পেয়েছিল।
ইবাকা, যে আফ্রিকার মানুষের অধিকারের জন্য ল ড়াই করেছে। বিশ্ব ব্যাংকের নীতির প্রশ্ন করছে এবং আফ্রিকায় চলমান সং ঘাত, যু দ্ধ নিয়ে আওয়াজ তুলছে। তার সাথে সালারের সাক্ষাৎ বদলে দিয়েছিল সালারের জীবন।
পশ্চিমা বিশ্বে বুদ্ধির কদরের থেকেও বেশি কদর হয় আপনি যতক্ষণ তাদের পাপেট হিসেবে থাকবেন। ইবাকার সাথে পরিচয় এবং আফ্রিকার উন্নয়নের নামে চালানো প্রজেক্ট গুলোর ভয়াবহতা সালার টের পেয়েছিল। কিন্তু ততক্ষণে দেরি হয়ে গেছে।
বিশ্ব ব্যাংকের সাথে সি আই এ জুড়ে সালারের স্বাভাবিক জীবনের ছন্দ প্রায় শেষ করে দিয়েছিল। নিজেকে উপস্থাপন করতে, সম্ভাব্য বিপদ আঁচ করে আমেরিকায় যখন সে সকল প্রমাণ হারিয়ে অসহায়, পেট্রিস ইবাকার উপর হওয়া হা মলা যখন সে সন্দেহ করছে আর কঙ্গোতে পুরো পরিবারের সাথে যোগাযোগ বিচ্ছিন্ন হয়ে কাটানো রাত্রিতে সে আবারও অনুধাবন করেছিল,

আল্লাহ্ কি তবে তার উপর নারাজ? একজন হাফিজ-এ-কুরআন হওয়া সত্ত্বেও যে জানে যে উপার্জন সে করছে সেটা আল্লাহর দেখানো পথের বিরুদ্ধ তবুও সে পথ থেকে ফিরছে না। এই অন্যায়ে কি আল্লাহ তাকে শাস্তি দিচ্ছে?
এই টালমাটাল সময়েই পৃথিবীতে আসে হুমাইন সিকান্দার। এরমধ্যেই বিপদ উতরে যায় সালার। উল্টো ফাঁদে পড়ে যায় বিশ্ব ব্যাংকের প্রজেক্ট। যেখানে সালারকেই তখন তাদের সবথেকে বেশি প্রয়োজন। বিশ্ব ব্যাংকের ভাইস প্রেসিডেন্ট পদে আসীন হয় সে। এই সিদ্ধান্তেও ইমামা নাখোশ থাকে।
সে চায়না সালার এই পথে থাকুক। কিন্তু এটা সালার। সে নিজের সিদ্ধান্তে চলে।
সময় বহমান। সালারের তৈরি স্কুলে এক বিচ্ছিন্ন ঘটনা ঘটে। যার ফলস্বরূপ একটি ছোট্ট মেয়ে আসে তাদের জীবনে। যাকে সালারের নাম দেয়া হয়। রাইসা সালার, তাদের দত্তক সন্তান।
দুই মেয়ে, দুই ছেলে এবং ইমামাকে নিয়ে সালারের জীবন এগিয়ে যায়। সালারের মনে সেই দুঃখ তখনো থেকে যায়। তার সব আছে তবুও সে আল্লাহর নিষিদ্ধ পথ থেকে ফিরতে পারছে না। কেন? আল্লাহ্ কি চান না?
রাইসা সালারের আসল পিতামাতা সুদের কারবারের সেই ভিকটিম যারা দারিদ্র্যের কবলে পড়ে নিজের সব বির্সজন দেয়। এমনকি নিজের সততাও। শুধুমাত্র সুদ এবং লোভ একটা বিশাল পরিবারকে কীভাবে বিলীন করে দেয় সেটা রাইসা সালার নিজেও জানতে পারেনি সে সময়।
কোনো কিছু একদম নতুন করে শুরু করা কঠিন। আর সেটা যদি হয় কোনো নির্দিষ্ট নীতি মেনে এবং যেখানে সীমাবদ্ধতার শেষ নেই তবে কাজটা প্রায় অসম্ভব হয়ে দাঁড়ায়। সালার ভাইস প্রেসিডেন্ট পদ গ্রহণ করলেও ভেতরে ভেতরে সে ইসলামী অর্থনৈতিক একটা সিস্টেম শুরুর কাজ করে যাচ্ছে আরও কয়েকজনকে নিয়ে।
অবশেষে সেই সময় হাজির হয় যখন সালার সুদের পথ ছেড়ে ইসলামী সুদবিহীন একটি প্রতিষ্ঠান দিতে প্রথম পদক্ষেপ নেয়ার দোরগোড়ায় থাকে।
কিন্তু? জীবন আসলে অম্ল মধুর ট্র্যাজেডি। জীবনের চল্লিশ বছরের বেশি সে বিভিন্ন নামী সংস্থায় দিয়েছে, যেখানে সুদের কারবার। স্ত্রীর মানা সত্ত্বেও যে একটা সময়ের অপেক্ষা করেছে এসব ছাড়ার। ঠিক এমন মুহূর্তেই তাদের জীবনে আবার এলো ঝড়।
সালার আক্রান্ত হলো ব্রেইন টিউমারে। এই সংবাদ তাকে যেমন নাড়িয়ে দিয়েছিল তেমনি দুর্বল করে দেয় তার পরিবারকেও। ইমামা নির্বাক হয়ে যায়। কেন তার সাথেই এমন হতে হবে? তবে এটাই কি সত্যি -
❛আমি যাকেই ভালোবাসি আল্লাহ্ তাকে ছিনিয়ে নেয়❜
এত বছরে সালার এবং ইমামা একে অপরের ছায়া হিসেবে কাটিয়েছে। সালার যেখানে দিনরাত ব্যস্ত থেকেছে কাজে, সেখানে ইমামা ঘর সামলেছে, চার সন্তান সামলেছে। ইমামা একা কী করে পারবে সালারের এই অসুস্থতা মোকাবিলা করতে? সালার ছাড়া ইমামার জীবন সে কখনো ভেবেছিল?
কঠিন সময় দিয়ে আল্লাহ পরীক্ষা নেয়। তাদের জীবনে কেন এত পরীক্ষা?
জিব্রিল, ইমামার প্রথম সন্তান। একজন বড়ো ভাই যেমন হওয়া দরকার সে ঠিক তেমন। ছোট্ট থেকেই সে নিজের দায়িত্ব পালন সম্পর্কে সচেতন। মায়ের প্রতি নিবিড় ভালোবাসা, ছোটো ভাইবোনদের দেখাশোনা একজন দায়িত্ববান ব্যক্তির মতো করেছে। যেখানে ছোটো ভাই হুমাইন উল্টো। দুষ্টু, অবিরত প্রশ্ন করতে থাকে আর যাকে দিয়ে অসম্ভব কাজ কিছুই না। তার সাগরেদ ছোট্ট রাইসা। এদিকে ইনায়া বড় ভাইয়ের মতোই সভ্য।
তবে তাদের প্রত্যেকের ধর্ম জ্ঞান দারুণ। সালার এবং ইমামার মতোই তারা বিচক্ষণ, মেধাবী। সন্তানদের পারিবারিক শিক্ষার আদর্শ নির্দশন তাদের পরিবার।
এরমধ্যেই সালার ইসলামী ইন্টারেস্ট ফ্রি একটি প্রতিষ্ঠান দিয়ে দেয়। অনেক ঝড় ঝাপটা পেরিয়ে সে প্রতিষ্ঠান মাথা তুলে দাঁড়ানোর পথে এগোয়।
নিজের অসুস্থতাকে মানিয়ে নিয়েই সালার চলে। এবং ইমামা তার সফরসঙ্গী হিসেবে থাকে।
জীবনের প্রয়োজনে, পরিবারের প্রয়োজনে ইমামা সন্তান সহ পাকিস্তান এসে পড়ে। সালার এবং বড়ো ছেলে রয়ে যায় বিদেশ বিভুঁইয়ে। কেটে যায় ষোলোটা বছর!
আইশা আবদিন, তিন বোনের ছোটো বোন। যার জন্মের কিছু পরেই তার পিতা ইহলোক ত্যাগ করে। মা আর দুই কন্যা সহ ডাক্তারি পেশায় নিজেকে মানিয়ে নিতে হিমশিম খায়। তাই আইশার ছোটোবেলা কাটে নানা-নানুর সাথে আপন দেশে। যে তাদের শিক্ষায় অসাধারণ এক ব্যক্তিত্বের অধিকারী হিসেবে বড়ো হয়। যে ইসলামের ছায়াতলে নিজেকে নিরাপদ ভাবে। কৈশোরের দিনগুলোয় তার জীবনে জিব্রিল এক বসন্তের মতো আসলেও তাকে আপন করার কোনো উপায় ছিল না। নিজের জীবনকে ইসলামের ছায়াতলে রাখতে এবং সুখী রাখতে তার মতো একজনকেই দরকার ছিল। কিন্তু বিধাতার লিখন অন্য ছিল। না হয় কেন আহসান সাদের মতো জীবনসঙ্গী হবে? কেনই বা একজন প্র্যাক্টিসিং মুসলিমের এমন অবিশ্বাসী হয়ে যেতে হবে?
ঘাত প্রতিঘাতের জীবনে এরিক সেই ছোটোকালে ইমামাকে কথা দিয়েছিল ইনায়ার জন্য সে অপেক্ষা করবে। একজন ভালো মানুষ হিসেবে নিজেকে তৈরি করবে। এবং সে শুধু যে নামের মুসলিম হয়ে থাকবে তেমন না। একজন ভালো মানুষ হিসেবেই নিজেকে গড়ে তুলবে।
এরিক আবদুল্লাহ তার কথা রেখেছিল। কিন্তু ইমামা কেমন করে ইনায়ার সাথে একজন বিদেশীর কথা পাকা করতে পারে?
হিশাম একজন বা হ রা ইনের নাগরিক। কর্মসূত্রে রাইসার সাথে তার আলাপ। রাইসা নিজের বাউন্ডারি জানে। তাই সে চায় না ইমামার মতের বিরুদ্ধে গিয়ে হিশামের সাথে সে ভবিষ্যত চিন্তা করে। কিন্তু আমাদের কোনো কিছুই আসলে আমাদের হাতে নেই।
হুমাইন যে বলা যায় সালারের কার্বন কপি। বুদ্ধিতে, ব্যক্তিত্বে এবং কাজের ক্ষেত্রেও সে ছাড়িয়ে গেছে পিতাকে।
একজন পিতার জন্য এর থেকে গর্বের আর কী হতে পারে?
নিজের কর্মময় জীবন, ইমামার মতো সঙ্গী, চারজন প্রতিষ্ঠিত সন্তান, দ্বীনের পথে জীবন এই তো একটা মানুষের জীবনের চাওয়া। এরই নাম কি আব-এ-হায়াত?
তবে জীবনের আরো একটা ঝড় এখনো হয়তো রয়েই গেছে। অতীত কখনো এমনভাবে মাটি ফুঁড়ে বেরিয়ে আসে যেখানে বর্তমান ধাক্কা খায়।
একটা সফল জীবনের বাঁকে বাঁকে উত্থান পতন থাকে। অমৃ তের ধারা পান করতে গেলে গরলকে একটু বরণ করে নিতে হয়।
সালার-ইমামার গল্প এগিয়ে গেছে জিব্রিল-আইশা কিংবা ইনায়া-আবদুল্লাহতে, অথবা রাইসা-হিশামে। এগিয়েছে একটা পূর্ণাঙ্গ জীবনে যেখানে আদম-হাওয়া কালে কালে এসেছে, যেখানে মাকড়সার জালের মতো সমস্যা ঘিরে ধরেছে, প্রাপ্তি-অপ্রাপ্তির হিসেব গোলমাল হয়েছে কিংবা অনেক চ��ওয়ার পর দোয়া কবুল হয়েছে। কিন্তু সবশেষে অর্জন হয়েছে সেই কাঙ্ক্ষিত ধারা। যেখানে জীবনের আসল অর্থ আছে। কারণ আল্লাহ্ রহীম রহমান। তিনি বরকতময়।

❛পীর-এ-কামিল❜ এ যেমন একটা আত্মিক যাত্রা ছিল সেই যাত্রার পরের অংশ বর্ণিত হয়েছে এই বইতে। ইংলিশে যাকে বলা হয়েছে ❛Aab-E-Hayat, Fountain of Life❜।
প্রথম বই পড়ার প্রায় দেড় বছর পর দ্বিতীয় বইটা আমি পড়েছি। প্রথম বইয়ের যে মুগ্ধতা ছিল সেটা কাটিয়ে উঠতে হয়তো আমি এখনো পারিনি। প্রথম বইগুলো সবসময়ই আকাঙ্ক্ষা এতটা বাড়িয়ে দেয় যে পরের বই অনেকসময় সেই প্রত্যাশা পূরণে ব্যর্থ হয়। আর ঠিক এই কারণেই আমি পরের বই পড়ার জন্য অনেক সময় নিয়েছি। এর আরো একটা কারণ বইটির ইংলিশ হাতের কাছে না থাকায়। অডিওবুক শোনার মতো সময় হচ্ছিল না। প্রায় এক সপ্তাহের যাত্রা আমার অমৃ তের এই ধারাকে নিয়ে।
তো প্রথমেই এই প্রশ্ন আসে, বইটা কেমন? প্রত্যাশা পূরণ করেছে কি?
আমার মতে এক কথায় এর উত্তর দেয়া সম্ভব না। প্রথম বইতে লেখিকার আলোচনার বিষয়বস্তু, গল্প ছিল এক রকমের। আত্মিক যাত্রা, কাদি য়ানি চিন্তাধারা এবং এর থেকে বেরিয়ে আল্লাহর প্রেরিত নবী ﷺ কে বিশ্বাসের এক অপূর্ব কাহিনি। যেখানে ছিল এক অদ্ভুত বিশ্বাসী নারীর প্রতি অনুভূতির নানা মিশ্রণ থেকে তৈরি হওয়া অগাধ ভালোবাসা এবং সেই উসিলায় নিজেকে আমূল পরিবর্তন করে আল্লাহর রহমতের ছায়ায় আসা এক ব্যক্তির গল্প। যার শেষটা অব্যক্ত সুন্দর।
এই উপন্যাসের শুরুটা হয়েছে ঠিক যেখানে প্রথম বই শেষ হয়েছে সেখান থেকে। তবে লেখিকা প্রায় দশ বছরের বিশাল একটা গ্যাপ দিয়ে বইটি প্রকাশ করেছেন। যেটি আরো বিস্তারিত, মূলভাব নতুন, আগের বইয়ের থেকেও বড়। প্রায় ৭২০ পেইজের বিশাল বইতে অনেক কিছু এসেছে। যার কিছু ভালো লেগেছে, কিছু অবাক করেছে, মুগ্ধ করেছে, কিছু আবার নিতান্তই মেজাজ খারাপ করেছে, কোনো ব্যাপার আবার লেগেছে অকারণেই ঘটলো। মূলকথা ভালো মন্দ লাগার একটা সম্মিলিত অনুভূতি নিয়ে বইটা শেষ করেছি।
লেখিকা তার লেখায় সমাজ, ধর্ম, বাস্তবতা নিয়ে দারুণ কিছু চিত্র ফুটিয়ে তোলেন। এই বইতেও তার প্রতিফলন ঘটেছে। কিছু জায়গায় নিজের ব্যক্তিগত মতামতকে জোরালো আকারে প্রতিষ্ঠিত করতে চেয়েছেন। কোথাও সমাজের অন্ধকার দিকগুলোকে ফুটিয়ে তুলেছেন নির্মমভাবে।
বইয়ের শুরুটাও রূপকথার মতোই সুন্দর। ইমামা-সালারের বিয়ের পরের শুরুর জীবন খুবই দারুণ চিত্রিত হয়েছে। একজন প্রেমে পা গল স্বামী আর অনুভূতি আসলে কেমন বুঝতে না পারা স্ত্রী তাদের জীবনের শুরুটা আমার অত্যধিক ভালো লেগেছে। কিছু বিষয় হাসির উদ্রেক করেছে। কোথাও ইমামার উপর যারপরনাই বির ক্ত হয়েছি। সালারের নিঃস্বার্থ ভালোবাসা অবাক করেছে। তেমনি তাদের কঠিন সময়, মনোমালিন্যতে সালারের দৃষ্টিভঙ্গি এবং তার দৃষ্টিকোণে এত ম্যাচিউর ভাবে হ্যান্ডেল করেছে যে এই চরিত্রের উপর মুগ্ধ না হয়ে থাকা যায়নি।
একজন দায়িত্ববান এবং নেক জীবনসঙ্গী দুনিয়াতেই বেহেশ্তের অনুভূতি দিতে পারে। তাদের দাম্পত্য থেকে এই বিষয়টা একদম ক্রিস্টাল ক্লিয়ার ভাবে উঠে এসেছে।
সালার-ইমামার দাম্পত্য জীবনের মধ্যেই লেখিকা এই বইয়ের সবথেকে গুরুত্বপুর্ণ একটা বিষয়কে তুলে এনেছেন। সেটা হলো ❛ইসলামে সুদ হারাম❜। সুদকে নিষিদ্ধ ঘোষণা করা হয়েছে। মুহাম্মদ ﷺ তার বিদায় হজের ভাষণে সুদ সহ আরো যেসব বিষয় সম্পর্কে কথা বলেছেন এই বইতে লেখিকা সেটা অসাধারণ ভাবে ফুটিয়ে তুলেছেন।
আ রব বিশ্ব বা মুসলিম বিশ্ব একত্রে হলে আদতেই সুদবিহীন জীবন ব্যবস্থা চালু করা সম্ভব। শুধু প্রয়োজন পজিটিভ মাইন্ডসেট। সালার সহ আরো কয়েকজন মুসলিম নিয়ে তৈরি SIF এবং এর কার্যক্রম সত্যিই লেখিকার চিন্তার দূরদর্শিতা প্রমাণ করে। একইসাথে পশ্চিমা বিশ্ব সহ গোয়েন্দা সংস্থার সংযোজন করে উপন্যাসের নানা গতি তিনি বজায় রেখেছেন।
তবে আমি আশা করেছিলাম SIF এর যাত্রা লেখিকা বিস্তারিত আলোচনা করবেন। খুবই স্বাভাবিক, এমন একটা সংস্থা তৈরি, পরিচালনা খুবই চ্যালেঞ্জিং কাজ। সালার এবং তারা সবাই সেই সমস্যা গুলোর পার করেছে। সেগুলো শুধু অল্প বর্ণনা না দিয়ে সেখানে বিস্তারিত আলোচনা করা যেত।
ইসলাম এবং প্র্যাক্টিসিং মুসলিম মানেই যেমন পশ্চিমা বিশ্বের কাছে একটা ভ য়ের কিংবা নেগেটিভ বিষয় এই ব্যাপারটা তিনি এরিকের পরিবর্তন, রিভার্ট হওয়া এবং এবং একজন রিভার্ট হিসেবে নিজের জীবনকে পরিচালনা করার বিষয়গুলো বেশ লেগেছে। হয়তো অতি কল্পনা হয়েছে কিছু ক্ষেত্রে। তবে অসম্ভব নয়।
পাকিস্তানের মুসলিম এবং ইসলামের চর্চার ভালো দিক যেমন দেখিয়েছেন, তেমনি সেখানে পশ্চিমা রীতির প্রয়োগ, আপন শিকড় থেকে উঠে যাওয়া দেখিয়েছেন। এবং তাদের সবথেকে বড়ো দিক ইসলাম নিয়ে হিপো ক্রেসি, পুরুষের বিশেষ করে টিপিক্যাল স্বামীদের মনোভাব ফুটিয়ে তুলেছেন। একজন প্র্যাক্টিসিং মুসলিম এবং কুরআনের হাফিজ হলেই যে সে একজন ভালো মানুষ হবে এমন নয়। নিজের সুবিধার্থে ইসলাম ব্যবহার সাব কন্টিনেন্টের খুব প্রচলিত এক ফোঁড়া। এর ভয়াবহতা আইশা এবং সাদের পরিবারের মাধ্যমে প্রকাশ পেয়েছে। মানুষের ব্যবহার, দ্বিচারিতা এবং আল্লাহর নিয়মের ইচ্ছামতো (নিজের সুবিধার্থে) ব্যাখ্যা একজন দ্বীনি মানুষের মনকেও টলিয়ে দিতে পারে।
পারিবারিক শিক্ষা একটা শিশুর মননে ঠিক কেমন প্রভাব ফেলে তার এপিঠ-ওপিঠ উঠে এসেছে সালার এবং সাদের পরিবারের মাধ্যমে। দুই পরিবারই ইসলাম অনুসারী, মেনে চলে। কিন্তু মানার ধরন, একে ধারন করার ধরন তাদের দুই পরিবারের মধ্যে বিশাল একটা পার্থক্য তৈরি করে।
ইসলাম শান্তির ধর্ম। কিন্তু আমরা নিজের স্বার্থে এর ভুল ব্যাখ্যা করি এবং সেভাবে অন্যকে চলতেও বাধ্য করি। কিন্তু অন্যকে জ্ঞান দিতে দিতে কখনো নিজের দিকে দেখি না আসলেই ইসলাম কী বলে?
বাবা মায়ের চারিত্রিক বৈশিষ্ট্য সন্তানে ধাবিত হয়। তাই সালারের পরিবার তার মতোই মেধাবী, সফল এবং অনেক ক্ষেত্রে তার থেকেও বেশি সফল। লেখিকা এখানে ঢালাওভাবে সালারকে হিরো বানিয়ে দিয়েছেন। ঠিক এখানেই আমার ইমামার জন্য খারাপ লেগেছে। ইমামার প্রতি সালারের ভালোবাসায় কোনো খেদ নেই। কিন্তু কোথাও গিয়ে সালার নিজেও খানিকটা টিপিক্যাল ছিল না? স্ত্রীর দায়িত্ব সে নিয়েছে তাই বলে যেখানে স্বামী-স্ত্রী একে অপরের ছায়া, বিপদের সঙ্গী সেখানে সে ইমামাকে কেন নিজের বিপদে সাহায্য করতে দেয়নি?
ইমামাকে ছাড়া সালার থাকতেই পারে না। ডিপ্রেশনের সময় ইমামা যখন সালারকে ছেড়ে পাকিস্তান চলে আসে তখন সালার কষ্ট পায়। এটাকে আমি ধরে নিলাম নিজের স্বার্থেই। কারণ যখন সিকান্দার উসমান অসুস্থ হলো সালারের সব ভালোবাসা তখন উড়ে গেল। উনাকে সেবা করা কিংবা দেখভালের জন্য ইমামাকে বলা দোষের ছিল না। কিন্তু সেখানে ইমামার বাবা মায়ের ইস্যুও টেনে আনাকে আমার কাছে হিপো ক্রেসি লেগেছে। ইমামা সালারের প্রতি ভালোবাসা সেভাবে না দেখালেও তার অনুভূতিগুলো কখনো কখনো সালারের থেকেও বেশি গভীর ছিল। এখানেও লেখিকা পাকিস্তানি টিপিক্যাল সমাজকেই দেখিয়েছেন। ইমামার সিদ্ধান্ত সালার শুনেনি, এতে করে সে যে বিপদেও পড়েছে তাও দেখিয়েছে।
সংসার বড়ো হলে ভালোবাসা ভাগ হয়ে যায়। এই করুণ কিন্তু নির্মম সত্যটা আমার কাছে খুব বেশি অনুভব হয়েছে। লেখিকা তাদের পুরো একটা জীবন এখানে দেখিয়েছেন।
তাগড়া জুয়ান সালার থেকে ষাটের ঘরের এক প্রবীণ, ইমামার চুলে পাক, সংসার এবং সন্তানের চিন্তা, কাজের পিছে ছুটে একটা জীবন কেটে গেছে। এত আনন্দ দুঃখের মাঝে আমরা বার্ধক্যের দিকে ধাবিত হচ্ছি। আমাদের উচ্ছলতা প্রতিস্থাপন হচ্ছে নতুন প্রজন্ম দিয়ে। সময় সবথেকে নির্মম। সালার এবং ইমামার যাত্রায় তাদের একত্রে প্রবীণ হওয়াটাও কখনো কখনো সত্যকে মেনে নিতে বেদনা দিচ্ছিল।
তবে অবাক লাগলো দুনিয়ায় ডাক্তার আর ব্যবসায়ী ছাড়া কোনো প্রফেশন নেই লেখিকার কাছে? সবাই ডাক্তার নাইলে সফল ব্যবসায়ী। কেন?
অবাক লেগেছে এই শতাব্দীতে এসেও লেখিকা ছেলে মেয়ের স্বাধীনতার ব্যাপারগুলো পক্ষপাতিত্ব ��রেছেন। হুমাইন কিংবা জিব্রিল ছেলে মেয়ে বন্ধু থাকলেও ইনায়ার ক্ষেত্রে বাউন্ডারি ছিল। সে নিজেই যথেষ্ট রিজার্ভ তবুও এরিক ছাড়া কোনো ছেলে বন্ধু নেই ব্যাপারটা ইনায়ার সময়ের জন্য বেমানান।
আবার বলছে ইমামা সালার তাদের যথেষ্ট ধর্মীয় শিক্ষা দিয়েছে। রাইসা নিজেও যথেষ্ট প্র্যাক্টিসিং। তবে একটা দৃশ্যে তার পোশাক আমার নিজের কাছেই অবাক লেগেছে। অবশ্যই সেটা খারাপ নয়। কিন্তু লেখিকার ব্যাখ্যার সাথে বিরোধী।
উপন্যাসের শুরুতে রোজার সময় ইমামা রোজা রেখে কেন চা খাচ্ছিল আর গৃহকর্মীকে চা সাধছিল আমি বুঝিনাই।
উপন্যাসের শেষটা দারুণ। খারাপ লাগবে, আবার অসম্ভব ভালো লাগবে। সালার আর ইমামা কি আজীবনের সাথী হবে নাকি ব্রেইন টিউমারের কাছে হেরে যাবে তাদের যাত্রা? ইমামা স্বপ্ন দেখেছিল

Probably the best sequel of the best book. However, the book is very different to Peere kamil. Its something unique. The idea , main theme of this book is about how a life can be laid down in view of Islam. Its a story about the man, who falls, but rise up again, encountering every hardship in his career and with family; but never give up. He is the one who has to go with everything, because he has become Kamil.

On the other hand, there is a woman with that man, torn and devastated for nine years, but eventually finds peace with him. How beautifully they are together. Salar and Imama. The best couple. And their children are also the best one.
Both of them face challenges in their own way, but are always with eachother:
سالار اور امامہ.... جو کہ اگر پتھر کہ بھی زمانے میں ہوتے تو مل جاتے....
Definite this story is about, Salar's family: Jibrael, Anaya, Humain & ofcourse,Raeesa.

As much as i respect Umera Ahmed as an author, this book was a complete and utter disappointment. It’s about 728 pages of how amazing and gifted the protagonist and his children are which gets a little too repetitive after the first couple hundred pages. The whole novel is pure fantasy with how amazing Salaar is and Umamas character devolves into a whiny materialistic wife who cries and fusses every single time things don’t go her way. Let’s not forget this is the same girl who left her own family to follow the righteous path.
PS : The ever so holy character, Umamas favourite hobby is reading cheap romance novels and imagining it’s her and her bf at the time whom she also meets after her marriage and casually does not bother to inform her husband.Ugh i can go on and on but let’s just stop here..

I read first part two times, and maybe I'll read it again someday but this book... Idk where to start. Let's just say, I had more expectations from this book, but it's nowhere near to Peer e Kamil. I wonder if I'd feel same about Peer e Kamil now if I reread it.

As this book is about the life of Imama and Salar Sikander after their marriage✨
1- the first thing I learned is that when there is a communication gap between you and your partner especially when you marry someone you hardly know it takes some time to communicate effectively. Because of this gap, even small things can feel bothersome. And when they do, you can't even tell each other about it, which brings us back to the issue of the communication gap
2- second thing Dr. Sahab(imama’s father) taught me that if a woman frequently threatens to leave home over small issues and fight her respect in her husband’s eyes starts to lessen🫶🏻
3- The third lesson I learned from this book is that what is haram remains haram, no matter how pure your intentions are. Justifications cannot make the haram permissible. When Allah declares something haram, it is to be avoided. Engaging in haram acts, no matter how small, will lead to unrest (besukooni) in your life💗
4- The fourth lesson I learned is that marriage requires patience and compromise. Allah will test you by giving or taking away wealth and blessings, or by altering distances in relationships. Remembering Allah during these tests will help ease your troubles.
5 -The book describes two types of people: both are Hafiz-e-Quran and Muslims. The difference is one understood the Quran’s true meaning, while the other followed incorrect teachings from his elders. This misunderstanding led him to harm his future generations and his wife. Some believe that controlling women and focusing only on their modesty is true Islam, thinking it pleases Allah. However, Allah has clearly stated to fear Him in matters concerning women.
6- The sixth lesson I learned is that elevating yourself by belittling others, revealing their secrets, or bringing up their past when they have changed is a bad thing / sin 👎🏻🙏🏻
7- last but not least, I learned that
وَتُعِزُّ مَنۡ تَشَآءُ وَتُذِلُّ مَنۡ تَشَآءُ
Allah alone has the power to give and take away respect. No matter how much someone tries to ruin another’s respect, they cannot succeed. In the book, many tried to tarnish Salar’s respect, but since he was devoted to Allah, Allah protected him❤️

I never wanted to read this book. I thought it could only spoil the characters of Salaar and Imama in my mind. I still don't know what made me buy it and then read it compulsively in 2 days.

The first half was all that I could hope for, especially as the book starts from exactly where the first one left off. It made the struggles of two seemingly mismatched people married to each other appear real and believable.

Then Umera Ahmed started on her favourite trope of religion, and things got a bit messy like always. While Peer e Kamil was all about finding religion, this book delves into the world of financial lending and interest.

I must admit that I like Umera Ahmed's writing but I don't agree with a lot of her ideology. Her version of "enlightened moderation" is not something I endorse, and probably never will. A lot of her writing comes off as preachy and sermonising.

That said, this book is a work of fiction, and should be taken as that. There is nothing wrong with imagining a world without interest where Muslims lead the best financial institutions. If we can read western fiction, which is ten times more unlikely, then what is wrong with reading Urdu fiction?

I'm just glad that I got a chance to read more about two characters who I loved while growing up. And I realize that the writer has left herself room to write another sequel.

First of all I think this book shouldn't even exíst, because this story wasn't about romance, their love story already overshadowed the actual topic of the book and I hate that because pek might be very slow but it's still a masterpiece because of the topic it's based on (for me)

Now I won't say romance is bad, it's great but it gets cringy sometimes, especially him calling her sweatheart please what is that? it sounds so cringy.

"Lekin mujhe takleef horahi hai sweatheart" is the cringiest thing sorry not sorry, I can't tolerate eng words in urdu books۔

4 years ago when I first read it i couldn't read the whole thing because it's boring (too much romance and no plot) but then I decided to read it again a few months ago just for Jibrael and Ayesha and that's what I LIKE about this book, Ayesha's story, I feel like that was something writer should have done after writing Salar in Aab e Hayat because Ayesha married her husband because she felt like he is like jibrael (religious and all) but the truth is majorty of religious people in Pakistan are extremist like her husbnad. The Kaaba scenes are also very beautiful. 🤌💖

I just have to say a writer shouldn't write too much romance when they want to convey a message like jkp doesn't have much romance so it's main message didn't get overshadowed.

When we came to know it was an extension of "Peer e Kamil", the way writer carried the novel is questionable. The novel is full of flaws, Inconsistent, Ir relative.
In First quarter of Novel: there is unnecessary addition of romanticism between the characters.
In second quarter of Novel: Writer seem to be inspired from Hollywood Movie "Blood Diamond" those who have watched it can relate.
In the next half of Novel there kids, you don't only envy to them but starting to hate them.
In short the novel is full waste of time unlike the other novels of Umera Ahmed.

I really like Umera Ahmed's novels I have read Peer e kamil and I loved it.but Aab e hayat don't have peer e kamil's charm.I'm going to give my honest opinion here.I must admit that I had really high hopes for Aab e hayat. I thought it will be as good as peer e kamil but was very disappointed.

first chapter was so boring, I couldn't read and was about to give up and felt like I was wasting my time but then as it was second part of peer e kamil so i hoped that it might get better but i was wrong but anyways I kept reading have completed it .First of all two protagonists i,e Salaar and Umama were not as same as portrayed in peer e kamil. Umama was acting like a child and was being extra sensitive.At first author said that she spent her life in extreme conditions,but suddenly she demanded a mansion with a river and all facilities of the world. and in peer e kamil she made some really difficult decisions of her life and faced difficulties but now at smallest inconvenience she started crying and was like...crying the whole time. and I think Umama was very lucky that Dr.subt Ali took her responsibility and she was spending a very respectable life but after marrying with salaar,author described her life as if she was living a very poor life and hasn't bought anything for herself in ages and salaar was the first person who ever bought something for her.first chapter was basically about salaar's and umama's daily activities...sitting, watching TV, talking about useless things... same thing were repeated over and over again.

And thier "zaheen tareen " children ugh... she portrayed them as they were perfect....So intelligent... so..handsome/beautiful. like they are like angels or something.specially Humain
(SPOILER ALERT ) ...being only 23 years old he was as successful as a 60 years old experienced business man. he was portrayed as highly successful...although he was not interested in his studies and he himself said "maine aj tak bus ek hi book parhi h ...mere baba ki autobiography"..I mean who becomes THAT successful by reading just one book which was not even related to his profession.what'smore spelling bee contest was an international competition and there were children from all over the world and they also had higher I.Q and they actually prepared for contest but for Humain they were no challenge at all .... it was a peice of cake for him, without actually preparing for it ....he just won!?.....so what?does that means he is the world's most "zaheen tareen dimag"?? well then he did very little for the world by being a business man,he should have solved the mystery of black hole or something which has puzzled scientists and most intelligent peple till now.It was shown as if he had some kind of super powers and unlike any human he predicted every situtaion very accurately as if he has already seen it... like he did in Hasham's case by saying that he would leave his crown.and then he REALLY DID!!...he just left everything even his crown for just for Raeesa who wasn't even giving him much attention. there was no reality it was like a fairy tale or story of disney princesses.It was very difficult to digest the story of these "zaheen tareen dimag".it was not zihanat....no.. it was looking some kind of magic. To be honest i really started to hate them all.

novel was so lengthy and some very unnecessary detail were given which were very irritating.and what about that dream which was in the begining of the novel?? What does that meant?and why did Salaar named his autobiography "Tash""?and why did Umama then named it Aab e hayat?what does Aab e hayat has to do with it?

Though i didn't enjoyed it as much i thought i would... but It's not like i regret reading it,or it was a waste of time.there are many good points about it too.
Like In this novel It was clearly pointed out that why interest system is forbidden in islam and how much difficult it can be to get rid of it ..... once you've totally committed yourself to it.and how much careless muslims have been in that case.
It also sheds light on a very important aspect, that was,non muslims ,specially westren people can never be sincere to us they will only use us and will help us untill we are of some use to them and they will never let our true religion spread or develope.

And what I really liked about Aab e hayat was how it portrayed ahsan said's family that althought they were leading a very pious life but there good deeds made them arrogant. which I think is very common in muslims these days. they think themselves above of everyone else and they become victims of the one of the major sins "arrogance".

some of the quotes of Aab e hayat were so beautiful which I just wanted to read over and over again . they contained bitter reality but were very beautiful and meaningfull.
"jab tak sub kuch heek rehta h hume lagta h k hamare pass bht waqt h.har kaam ker lenge ..sub kuch ho jaye ga...hum wo saare kam pehly ker lena chahte hen jo hamare nafs ko passand hen or wo saare kam zindagi k akhri hise k liye rakh chorte hen jo ALLAH pak ko passand hen."

And when salaar said that when ever he ges to any gathring he does not go there to judge people and to decide who will go to heaven and who will go to hell. I think it is something which each one of us should apply in our life.because we are so focused on other people and care about their sins that we totally neglect ours.

Overall it was a good novel.But honestly I only liked the last 2 or 3 chapters of the novel in which there was something serious going on other than Umama and salaar's repeatative story.I don't thing I'm going to read it again anytime soon.....or ever. though story wasn't great but it was good islamic lesson given and realities shown in this novel made it worth reading.

Peer-e-kamil is still my favorite .I read it during my exams I was that desperate lol .Did skip story of their adopted daughter (a few pages ) Going to reread the book after Ramadan (Happy Ramadan).

AND I'm going to name my son after Hameen InshaALLAH (no i'm not married ;)) .Looking forward to read Hameen's story <3 !

While reading Aab e hayat I was like that there is no need to write second part of peer e kamil. Because peer e kamil has it's own charm and worth. Although she picked a very good point and by giving us mind blowing examples she explain why bank job is not allowed in our religion.and I must say that she ended it a little bit earlier because there were many loose holes in this story and there were many points which she left untouched.
