Michel Bussi is one of France's most celebrated crime authors. The winner of more than 15 major literary awards, he is a professor of geography at the University of Rouen and a political commentator. After the Crash, his first book to appear in English, will be translated into over twenty languages.
Translated for the first time from France, this book has won multiple awards in its home country. A plane crash, two three month old babies on board and one survives while every other being on the plane does not. Really? Well, stranger things have happened in life, so just go with it. In the time before DNA it is almost impossible to prove which baby this was and so two families, one wealthy with connections, one hard working with no connections both claim the baby as their grandchildren. A court battle ensues. Was reminded a bit of King Solomon here, would one family give up, their claim in the best interest of the child. Of course not, there would be no story if they did.
Alternately narrated by the private detective's journal, he who was hired by the wealthy family and would spend eighteen years looking definitive proof of the child's identity and Mark the young man thought to be the brother of the unidentified child. This is what I call a puzzle mystery, clues are revealed slowly, pieces are assembled but it is not until the final piece that all becomes apparent. Have to admit I enjoyed the journey, constant revelations, trying to guess what would happen and if at times a bit dramatic it still made for a very interesting read. The end, not so sure about but how else could this end? Did not guess either, so there is that. Still for me a very good read.
After the Crash by Michel Bussi is a 2016 Hachette publication.
Apparently, this book was a huge hit in France a little while back and so has been translated and released in America.
The premise is certainly interesting. A plane crashes, killing everyone on board, save one three month old child. The miracle child is claimed by two sets of grandparents- one wealthy, one poor. A battle over custody of the baby ensues which reaches epic proportions. After eighteen long years, the mystery is still unsolved.
Is the beautiful blue-eyed girl Emilie or Lyse-Rose? To what lengths will the families go to claim the girl as their own? Will the girl ever discover her true heritage?
Once more we have a novel compared to- or 'for fans of' another super powered author or book. This one garnered comparisons to Stieg Larsson and is for fans of…. You guessed it- ‘Gone Girl’ and ‘The Girl on the Train’.
This is one wild ride of a novel that’s for sure, and it held my rapt attention as I watched in shock and horror, the insane battle for control over this child.
The facts concerning DNA in the early 1980’s is also of great interest, and played a key role in the story. These days, it’s easy to determine a child’s paternity, but back then, the best they could do was eliminate someone.
I was impressed by the details in this book, and how the author very cleverly added in events or conversations that didn’t make sense at the time,or seemed rather benign, but would later become an aha moment. So, this author is NOT a panster. This book is outlined and plotted very carefully, and it shows.
However, the twists became a little too far-fetched, and the whole thing spiraled out of control, with way too much going on in the second half of the book. I love a good plot twist as much as the next person, and I especially love a good ‘gotcha’ at the end, but the twists must be well timed, and too many of them thrown in for shock value alone, soon becomes tiresome, and loses its power over me.
I still appreciate a good roller coaster ride now and again, but the cars must stay on the track, or there will be an accident of epic proportions, which nearly happened here. The book didn’t completely go off the rails, but came awfully close.
Without saying too much, the whole thing ended up being too over the top for my taste, although I do see why the book has such a mass appeal. The puzzle over the Emilie/Lyse-Rose’s true paternity was outstanding and I’m still mulling over all the clever details of the mystery. It was the other parts of the book involving the detective, the family sagas, and secret love that got out of hand, becoming almost soapy at times. That, along with some unstable characterizations, stripped away the stylishness of the novel.
Overall, this one didn’t quite live up to the hype for me, but it was still entertaining enough and worth checking out for yourself. The translation, by the way, is very well done, in my opinion.
“The true mystery of the world is the visible, not the invisible.”

Michel Bussi, a French award-winning author, pens his latest crime thriller, Un avion sans elle, that has been translated into English by Sam Taylor and the English title is called, After the Crash. The mystery revolves around the identity of the youngest survivor of a plane crash accident among 169 passengers aboard that happened eighteen years ago, and now in the present, the detective, who was assigned to find out the identity of the girl, is now laying down his pen and have finished jotting down each and every clues of this unraveling mystery from every possible angles, is ready to take his last breath by killing himself, when he stumbles upon the last piece of that mystery which stops him from killing himself.
Synopsis:
On the night of 22 December 1980, a plane crashes on the Franco-Swiss border and is engulfed in flames. 168 out of 169 passengers are killed instantly. The miraculous sole survivor is a three-month-old baby girl. Two families, one rich, the other poor, step forward to claim her, sparking an investigation that will last for almost two decades. Is she Lyse-Rose or Emilie?
Eighteen years later, having failed to discover the truth, private detective Credule Grand-Duc plans to take his own life, but not before placing an account of his investigation in the girl's hands. But, as he sits at his desk about to pull the trigger, he uncovers a secret that changes everything - then is killed before he can breathe a word of it to anyone...
18 years ago, A planes crashes on Mont Terri that was flying from Istanbul to Paris with 169 passengers aboard. The only survivor is a three-month old baby girl who just before landing was thrown out of the cockpit and into the snow-laden plains of Mont Terri who must have even watched her parents along with other passengers consumed by the fire. Soon a fire-rescuer rescues her from the wreckage site and is taken to a hospital where after a day or two, her grandfather comes to take her home and claims her name to be Lyse-Rose de Carville and on the very same time, another grandfather calls the hospital to know about her health and claims her name to be Emilie Vitral. The confused doctor asks both of them to contact the local authorities before claiming her, thereby opening the doors to an eighteen year old unsolved mystery about a three-month old baby's real identity. Who is she, Lyse-Rose or Emilie?
18 years later, Credule Grand-Duc is the PI hired by Mathilde de Carville, grandmother of Lyse-Rose, to find out the baby's identity discreetly. But 18 years later, the man is giving up the unsolved mystery and just the moment when he was about to pull the trigger to shoot his brains off, he stumbles upon the very last piece of puzzle that uncovers the girl's identity. What did Grand-Duc stumbled upon that stopped him from taking his own life?
Lylie is now 18 lives and studies at University of Paris and on the day of her 18th birthday, she is left with a green notebook which is the journal of Credule Grand-Duc, on which the detective have meticulously and intricately laid out his thorough investigation regarding her real identity that the detective have promised right at the end of the journal. Reading which made Lylie distance herself from her caring and loving brother, Marc. How is he going to take the truth about Lylie's identity whom he loved like a girlfriend all throughout his life?
Before writing any further thing about this book, I would take a moment to applaud the writer for penning such a mind-blowing as well as hypnotic and thoroughly anticipative thriller that goes beyond any words to express my real feelings about this book, where the twists came like a slap out of nowhere on my face and left me with a burning feeling till another twist hit me right on my face.
Yes, this proves the author uses his intelligence and smartness to layer this heavily complex psychological as well as crime thriller and make it one hell of a gripping and edgy read for his readers. The writing is top class, very layered and the story building is quite structured like a LEGO puzzle, each piece dependent on one another. The prose is eloquent and crisp to comprehend with. The narrative style is kept engaging and free-flowing. And just right from the very beginning or right from the epilogue, the readers will feel captivated enough to stay glued to the story till the very last page.
The mystery is very enticing enough that will make the readers to keep turning the pages till the very end. And the way the author have wrapped and unraveled his mystery with a bit of emotional drama as well as based on the facts makes it a completely nail-biting read for crime fiction readers. The flaw that I faced while reading this book was that before even halfway through the story, I guessed the mind-blowing twist-filled climax, I mean, it became very obvious, and I can bet, like me, other readers too will find it easy to guess that last piece of the puzzle, but that doesn't make the book lose it's charm, since there is an almost heart-breaking love story that runs on the background of the mystery and each clue towards the truth makes it heavy upon that relationship, that the author have sensitively featured, careful not to irk up the anger among his readers with such an unusual sort of chemistry.
The characterization is done strongly, like each and every character is trying to outrun one another with their intriguing and constantly challenging demeanor towards this mystery, which have certainly ruined the minds and hearts of a lot of people. The protagonist, Marc, is very calm, calculative and kind as well as determined to finish reading the journal to know about Lylie's identity, while going through each and every piece of puzzle that the detective have pointed out in his journal. The other characters, where some are psychologically flawed or left destroyed by this war between two families to claim that little child, are strongly sketched as well as portrayed through the story, that is sure to leave an impressionistic mark after reading the book.
The backdrop of the thriller is set in Paris and the author have vividly brought out the Parisian charm and flair through his prose, thus giving the readers a first hand taste of the Parisian environment. No the cultural aspect or behavioral aspects of Paris have not been depicted into the storyline, but the location strongly smells of Paree air and with a detailed descriptions of each stations and streets in Paris, will easily transport the readers to this beautiful destination in the world, where beauty is not that significant but the roads and the houses are. The detailed descriptions about Mont Terri of Jura Mountains over the French-Swiss border plays a pivotal role in the key to this mystery, thus bringing out it's colors as well as the differences between two timelines is very distinct. There is also another location, Istanbul in Turkey, that the author have strikingly painted it in his backdrop while spinning the web of twisted mystery in his storyline.
In a nutshell, I'm really glad that I got to read this book even though the mystery couldn't challenge me give the book a 5 star rating, still, I think it's very interesting as well as enthralling thriller that is surely going to keep the readers glued like a moth to find the light in the middle of darkness.
Verdict: Must read for all the crime lovers, that evokes the sense and essence of a particular location quite strongly through it's prose.

The basic premise for this book is intriguing. A plane crash. Implausibly, but not impossibly, a baby is flung from the aircraft and survives. There are no identifying marks and pre-DNA testing no way to prove the baby’s identity, which is unfortunate as two sets of grandparents lay claim to the little girl. Equally unfortunately, but conveniently for the plot, no one outside her now dead parents has actually seen the baby – oh, except for her possible 6-year-old sister, which isn’t all that helpful to the court that has to decide the child’s identity. So far, so interesting. However after the dramatic beginning the novel descends into melodrama, with lots of family rivalry (one family is rich, one poor, not surprisingly, so chance for a bit of class snobbery) and then the baby doesn’t resemble anyone in the family who gets to keep her but has a great musical talent which lends support to the other family’s claims and then there’s a lot of dashing around Paris with guns being pointed at unfortunate parts of the anatomy and a private detective who takes 18 years to come to any conclusion (kept on retainer all that time, a nice little earner) and then finally! Finally! A DNA test which both families keep hidden for 3 years for some reason that completely eludes me. What a load of rubbish this book was. I was invested enough to keep reading although my irritation levels rose dramatically – rather like the action in this over-hyped and not even very well-written Dan Brownish French romp. Such a waste of a good idea.

After The Crash is the trashiest of trashy airport thrillers. The plot is preposterous: in 1982 a baby is the sole survivor of a French plane crash. Problem is, there were two identical looking infants from vastly different families aboard, and nobody can tell who the little girl belongs to. The ensuing years see a hotly-contested investigation into uncovering the true identity of the unfortunate child.
The writing is poor - well-trodden cliches and laughable implausibilities abound. And yet I kept reading. Why? Well the central mystery may be daft but it is compelling. Bussi has a knack of dangling a shiny new clue every time you feel like abandoning ship. So I raced to the end to discover the solution and found it... unsatisfactory. This book is the literary equivalent of a post-pub fast-food meal - seems like a great idea at the time but ultimately leaves you underwhelmed, undernourished and regretting your life choices.
After the Crash was a piece of excellent storytelling. It had many threads, unusual characters and lots of twists and turns. Sure, it was completely improbable and a bit over the top, but it had no trouble keeping my attention. In 1980, everyone perishes in a plane crash on a flight from Istanbul to Paris -- except for a three month old baby. But there were two three month old babies on the flight, and both sets of grandparents lay claim to the one surviving baby. Eighteen years later, the search for the truth comes to a head. Over the course of one day, a number of characters move back and forth in time, reflecting back on the aftermath of the accident and attempting to finally figure out who the mystery baby belongs to, slowly moving toward the big revelation at the end. It's a very clever way to structure the story, and I found myself completely taken in. Not a profound book or a literary masterpiece, but definitely a clever page turner of a book. And a very decent translation from the French original. Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for an opportunity to read an advance copy.
I gave this book a low rate because I wasn't convinced by the "coincidence" that there were 3 female babies with blue eyes and about a few months old who were in the same place at the same time.

★★½ Let me put my rating in perspective for you up front: I'm not a fan of detective fiction. It is my least favorite of any genre. For some reason, these books consistently annoy the hell out of me so I usually leave them alone. However, readers from all over the world are raving about Michel Bussi's After the Crash, using descriptors like "extraordinary", "richly satisfying", "brilliant"... so I had to read it, right?
After the Crash is indeed a detective fiction mystery/thriller. The perspective was interesting as the story is told through the detective's journal entries which offer a generous timeline of approximately eighteen years. After reading the book's synopsis, I'm sure many will agree that the main storyline sounds pretty interesting, even wild, and it was overall. However, for me personally, the flow of the mystery component was a bit too much. I felt like I was offered a 5000 piece puzzle on a day I was fiercely PMS'ing. Yes, that may sound extreme but that's the only way I can adequately describe my reading experience. Also, the big mystery reveal was too similar to one I have read before in . Not the same, but similar enough to distract me from the intended jaw-drop.
To sum it up, After the Crash was more headache than engaging for me personally, but fans of slowly-released clues will likely gobble this one right up. A heavy fan base in France has promoted this novel to bestseller status thus warranting translations for mass consumption. I'm sure a film adaptation is just around the corner as well. Michel Bussi has obviously done something right! Check it out and see if it's for you :)
My favorite quote: "We all hang on desperately to life, even when there's no hope left."
Indulge in an interesting story about an unusual dragonfly, a tragic plane crash and its serious consequences.
This is certainly a story which constantly deceives you with its web of lies and secrets & which makes unexpected twists. This is a book that does not allow you to relax for a moment, because only one moment of carelessness is enough to miss what she's heating up for so long. Complex characters and action that is becoming more and more complicated make this book a great read. And then comes the end ... definitely something you will not expect, but what was before your eyes and in a hidden corner of your consciousness all the time. You should start this bookish adventure completely unprepared - so that the final surprise factor can shine in all its glory.
After the Crash is a really superb mystery thriller - one that hooks you in immediately and leaves you hanging on every world while you wait to find out the outcome.
So the premise is very clever - a baby is the sole survivor of a plane crash. Two families claim she is theirs - in the days before DNA and with such a young child, how on earth do you work out who she is? Especially when there are no real clues. The court eventually decides but then begins years of investigation by the losing relatives determined to get at the truth.
The backstory is mostly told through the journal of the detective who has been on the case from the start. Hired by the rich family, he spends years of his time trying to get to the truth - in the end he leaves his journal to the child concerned. We also follow along with her "brother" and various other people as the tale unfolds..
It is beautifully imagined, the mystery of who the baby (now a grown woman) actually is - some absolutely fabulous characters that evoke real emotion within the reader - and some lovely little twists and turns on the way to the truth finally revealed. A real page turner, one that has you changing your mind at every step, feeling a kinship with this girl who does not know her name and keeps you hanging on to every word as more and more facts come to light.
It is a character driven tale with a terrific mystery element, some real thrills along the way, gorgeously translated and ultimately a really really terrific read. So who is the survivor? Lyse-Rose? Emilie? The journey to discovery is an enigmatic and highly intriguing one.
boring, predictable. incest storyline was very uncomfortable and false. characters were stereotypical; the doting brother/lover running all over town, the rich/poor families, the 'black widow' malvina the evil sister. the writing style is very wooden. the constant and unnecessary sexual descriptions are very jarring- we get it - Nicole has big boobs! the author displays an odd sense of self awareness, even saying that one scene was like a bad horror film and also admitting that we were likely bored with credule's 'diary'. the diary is one if the worst things about the book. you can tell from the very beginning that there is no way the child can be related to either family and so must have been a third baby! the messing around with the DNA tests was very tiresome.

I have been thinking about this review for 3 days now. I am still conflicted about this book. A plane crashes into a mountain in the middle of the night. Everyone is killed instantly, except a female infant who was thrown from the plane right before impact. The baby is claimed right away by the surviving Grandparents and living sibling. The problem is that there were 2 babies on the plane, both girls about the same age. The baby has no identifying marks, and this is pre-dna testing, so it’s anyone’s guess who the child actually belongs to. A custody battle ensues and it all comes down to one little piece of evidence. The story starts off with the child, now 18 interacting with her sibling. She is given a book written by a private detective who has been trying to find definitive proof of who’s the child actually is for 18 years. The detective was hired by the family that lost the custody battle.
There were so many facets to this story it is almost crazy that it all fit into less than 400 pages. First there is the mystery of the child’s parentage; it is hard to take sides but eventually I did. Then there is the detective, whose story is detailed enough to seem plausible. The detective gets to know both families and he definitely crosses a line here and there throughout the investigation. There are two possible surviving siblings; one female and one male. They both go through hell trying to come to terms with which child survived and what it actually means for them. Then there is the child herself. She goes on some sort of mission after reading the detective’s memoir, but did she reach the right conclusion?
As you can imagine, we get many POVs in this story. The author is careful to keep everyone in the dark long enough to make them all a little crazy. I cannot even imagine what each person must have felt being in each situation. The mystery was killing me slowly throughout the book. Each time I thought I had it figured out the author slowly tore apart my theory. I doubt anyone reading this book will be able to guess the truth. Even half way through the story I had no idea. Then even after the DNA results were revealed, I was still guessing. This was a very complex mystery that other authors should take notes from.
There was a bit of extra drama that I didn’t think was really necessary. It almost got to a point where I forgot we were searching for an identity, so to me it was a bit excessive. There were layers and layers to this story. Each character had so much baggage and the author laid it all. This left me disliking everyone for one reason or another. I kept on reading because I had to find out who the child belong to.
I found the ending a bit unsatisfying. I got the answer I was looking for, but the ending felt like it was so extreme. Kinda like the rest of the story, it was unbelievable. I think this is the sort of story you have to read for yourself.
I didn’t bother to finish this one, it is chatty, there are nonstop shifts in pow so that you have to be very alert not to miss who is now the narrator, and so much superfluous information, that I just cannot read anymore of this. I wonder why I can’t find a French crime writer that I really like?
This was a very entertaining tale about a girl, one of two babies on a flight but the only survivor following the crash, who went on to be the subject of a custody battle between grandparents. After a short legal battle trying to prove the child's identity without the benefit of DNA (it was 1980), the judge makes his decision. One of the grandmothers hires a private detective on an 18 year retainer (really?), and if nothing else this guy provides most of the book's laughs and mysteries while the journal he kept for 18 very busy years is recounted.
Odd characters, slightly removed or remote, but great story telling anyway.
