I practiced law for nearly fifteen years in various countries such as Belgium (where I lived for 10 years), my native south of France and Quebec, where I've been living for more than eight years.
With the objective of confirming the adage, "the law opens many doors, provided you use one to leave" I made my escape from the legal world in 2008 into that of multimedia, namely the production of video games and mobile applications.
I had the pleasure to participate in the creation of a dozen games and to immerse myself in a crazy and creative environment where I could trade-in my suit for a pair of jeans!

I've been exposed to a mixture of cultures, influences and a variety of experiences that have all served, in turn, to satisfy and stimulate my curiosity.

My sense of humour and innate refusal to take myself too seriously also play a big role in how I see life: an attitude I credit to my grandmother, who instilled in me the love of a good turn of phrase and a play on words.

It was ultimately the accumulation of my life's experience, both professionally and personally, that prompted me to get into novel writing....

However, although the desire was there, the inspiration was not - at least not at first.

Then, one special morning, the characters I'd had in mind for a while began to come to life and the Rossetti & MacLane novels were born!

Under the banner of technology, humour and suspense, we are privy to witness the birth of a new bond between two characters who could very well never have met and yet manage form a very dynamic duo.

----

- Jeux dangereux,
- Une enquête cannoise,
- Une affaire de famille,
- Trois balles dans le buffet
- Un froid de loup,
- Scoumoune niçoise.

I watched as my first reading session was bringing me to about 33%, thinking that there might be an 'act one' curtain, with a major plot spin. But no... and so I allowed myself to be pulled along very pleasurably to the 45% point. The storytelling is fast-paced, deft and for me entirely plausible, the protagonists Rossetti and MacLane believable and sympathique.

When I powered down my Kindle I gave some thought to the very central role played in the narrative by computer gaming. I reflected on the fact that a long time ago I decided that immersive gaming was something I could live without!

Admittedly back in the very late seventies I was briefly addicted to 'Donkey Kong', played on a stand-alone console swallowing franc coins and positioned next to the toilets Chez Castel, the legendary club in Rue Princesse in Paris. When the internet arrived I was briefly seduced by 'Prince of Persia', although the primitive graphics quickly left me unimpressed. At the turn of the century my young daughter and I found 'Shufflepuck' (still in black-and-white) great fun.

Some years later I decided that even the earliest iteration of 'SimCity' could be dangerously addictive. My decision was that my life should not have time for serious gaming. Not that I failed to stay informed as MMORPG became an increasingly familiar acronym. About ten years ago I found 'Second Life' of great interest and indeed it inspired my to imagine an upside-down virtual world, 'VitaVersa', for my novel "Sex & Drugs & Profiteroles".

All of this I mention as I struggle to understand why I have no problem with the long swathes of text the writer devotes to detailed insider description of the global software business, to ‘killer apps’ (I don’t even own a smartphone!) and to the perils concerning panoptic cyber-security.

A second reading session sufficed to finish the book. It became obvious that the author was not constrained by a ‘three act’ dramaturgy but had rather structured the telling of his tale like a lawyer’s plaidoyer, leading smoothly to a conclusion with the guilty… and indeed the innocent… clearly identified. (I mention the ‘innocent’… it was agreeable that Dumont confidently postponed a consummation of the Rossetti and MacLane romantic relationship for a sequel.)

The pace picked up well as soon as the MacGuffin… the contents of the ‘cigar box’… was identified. Then the various forms of villainy were fully revealed and the plotting subsequently well calibrated. My only reservation was that while secondary characters like Martinez and Angel were well fleshed out and engaging, the creep who was Amanda’s husband Frank came across as rather one-dimensional. I’m glad he will not be around in future. It was sometimes amusing to read about the menace of digital data mining… in the knowledge that for both Amazon and Goodreads we are as good as transparent, if not quite naked!

It seems that if I wish to read the further titles in Jérôme Dumont's series I shall have to buy the French original ebooks. I’ll be happy to do so, given that while reading the English edition I was always aware that it was a translation… not a bad translation, but one not lacking in occasional jarring word choices and with an inconsistent ‘voice’.

When a new client, Amanda Deschamps enters the law office of Gabriel Rossetti, he naturally thinks its another boring divorce case. However Amanda isn't sure she wants a divorce, but she is sure her husband is up to something and that’s what she wants Gabriel to find out.

The pace quickens and the story begins to take on a somewhat international intrigue as it delves into the online gaming world and the amount of information these types of games/companies acquire about the players and what a corrupt person could do with that information. Both Gabriel and Amanda must pool their resources and contacts to find out the extent of the breech and put a stop to it.

There are a lot of twists and turns in this novel, which propel the reader forward wanting to know what happens next. I enjoyed the book a great deal, but I do have to say I was overwhelmed with the technical language and I think the author could have portrayed the intricacies of the online gaming world with less technical speak as it did bog the story down a bit (however if you are interested in tech you will find this incredibly informative).

I should note that this book was originally written in French and then translated to English. The translation was done very well and if it hadn't been brought to my attention, I wouldn't have known.

This was a Goodreads win and I enjoyed it. Fascinating computer stuff - maybe even scary. A fun, easy read.

This book has been translated from the original French version by Robyn Jaquays and is the first in the Rossetti & MacLane crime thriller series.

Author Jérôme Dumont provided me with a review copy in return for my honest review.

Review:

Dangerous Games has been well translated from the original and flows well. It's an interesting plot that's a take on 'big brother' in a slightly different way.

I found the plot intriguing, which made for compulsive reading; it's a page-turner!

Some parts I found a bit confusing, I got muddled up somewhat in the middle of the book, particularly where it sways between the Croatians and Italians. That may well have been due, in part, to my reading in the middle of the night as I found it hard to put down.

Rossetti is a great character - I found him likeable and believable, charming and amusing and good at his job. Amanda complements Rossetti and the pair work well together.

The book certainly gathers pace as it tumbles towards its conclusion. There are some fantastic suspenseful moments but also a couple of predictable turns. I'd like to read more of the Rossetti & MacLane series as it is translated.

Discover something new! Jerome Dumont is a French author and this is the first book in his Rossetti & MacLane series. The version I read is a translation from the French and the first of the author’s books to be translated. Up front I just want to say that the translation is excellently done.

The story opens with Gabriel Rossetti, a young, single lawyer, in Nice, France. He’s in a pretty comfortable routine as summer approaches, processing his cases while being egged on by his assistant Nina, and trading barbs with best friend Martinez. Then Amanda Deschamps walks into his office. Amanda is the owner of a very successful online game design company. Her husband works for her in the business. They are on the verge of launching an industry changing game but Amanda is worried that her husband is having an affair. Gabriel is used to dealing with divorces and the suspicious spouses involved, so he sets his investigator Mr. Paul to the case. What the investigation reveals will take Gabriel from Nice to Montreal and back again, and his days will never again be ordinary.

Gabriel is a confident and charming character, he has laid out his life in a way that suits him, takes the clients he wants, and always does an excellent job. Amanda is a very capable business woman who is confident in her decisions but not arrogant about it. She has created a company that her employees love to work at, and with a growing customer base, has taken the gaming world by storm. Both of these characters have been well-crafted by the author and were a pleasure to get to know. I enjoyed the author’s descriptions of the locations where the story take place and the suspense that has been built in to this mystery. In addition, the author gives a lot of background information about the gaming world and either knows the business personally or did an immense amount of research while writing this book.

I’m highly recommending this book for mystery lovers and gamers alike. It seems that the author is planning to have more of this series translated and I will be looking forward to reading them. I’m giving “Dangerous Games” a rating of 4 out of 4 stars.

For once a highly technical (in parts) cyber thriller mixed in with more humdrum thriller verging on police procedural but a lawyer and the female boss of a computer games company. Translated from the French and part of a new series. There are some good moments especially for me on the technical side. The relationship between the two protagonists is less satisfying. Usual rich femme in trouble but no real threat, male clever lawyer who runs to her aid. No sex or bad language and their relationship is all a bit dull as are the other relationships depicted. Needs a bit more of an edge for me. Not sure if this is caused by the translation or built in but missed its mark. Nevertheless the story and plot were interesting even if the resolution was a little to easy.

Well, this was a quick read even if it didn't manage to draw me in. There was nor much suspense nor enough romance but a lot of technical explanations and just a little bit of French and Canadian atmosphere. There are some interesting personages (Martinez, Mr. Paul), but I couldn't feel Amanda, in my opinion she was too much cold business-woman. As for the story: the scary part is that all this could be possible - but it wasn't told in a scary way.
