They say the night is always darkest before the dawn. But sometimes it seems that darkness is simply all around you.

The Dark is the twenty-first entry in the Salem Massachusetts Mini Mystery series. The start of this series is The Lucky Cat. These short stories are being written and loaded one a day from October 1 through October 31, 2014. All author's proceeds from this series benefit battered women's shelters.

Lisa has lived in scenic Massachusetts since 1986, with only two brief forays out of state. One of Lisa’s ancestors was Ann Foster, who died during the Salem Witch Trials. Ann Foster was a grandmother by that time and sacrificed herself to protect her daughter and granddaughter. Ann had been born in England, came over in 1635, and was 75 by the time of the trials. Salem reached its dark depths during those trials from 1692-1693 - but since then has healed, blossomed, and shines. It now features the amazing Peabody Essex Museum, a plethora of gorgeous historic architecture, and a beautiful coastline. It's well worth a visit. If you can't go in person, take a virtual trip through Lisa's first-hand descriptions!

Too obvious

Another one that failed to live up to the rest. It really was a bit too obvious.
She is utterly despondent. Lenny had drugs (pot) in his apartment and his ex-girlfriend was his supplier. She would have spent the whole day with the covers pulled over her if Zoe hadn't turned up. Now she has been dragged to a photo exhibition and now faced a burger. Thinking it would choke her she took a small bite - but it was delicious. Their meal was interrupted by the arrival of the daughter given up at birth. She has just come from the hospital where her mother is being treated for cancer. Will the news she brings clear everything up? Will it be too late to make things right?

After the shocking discovery, Kathy has completely isolated herself.

Holed up in her apartment with only Josephine for company, she is avoiding the outside world.

But Zoe shows up. The ladies had made plans, days ago, to visit a Jo Ratcliffe exhibit at the Peabody Essex Museum; it’s based on the conflict in Angola.

Despite Kathy’s steadfast objections, Zoe is able to drag her out to the museum.

And it helps. Going to see the Angola photos really aids in putting Kathy’s heartbreak in perspective. She even feels well enough to eat—delicious burgers and sweet potato fries.

Elizabeth stops by their table, with an information bomb that rocks Kathy to the core.

And what is thought to be lost, is found.

Aw

Kathy is a wreck after finding Lenny doing something she was so against, rolling up a joint. How could he lie to her like this? He knew how she felt about it. But is Lenny doing something wrong or is there a good answer for what he has done?
