'I cannot think of the deep sea without shuddering at the nameless things that may at this very moment be crawling and floundering on its slimy bed, worshipping their ancient stone idols and carving their own detestable likenesses on submarine obelisks of water-soaked granite.'Germans captured his ship. He manages to escape in a small boat, but gets lost in the Pacific. All he knows is that is somewhere south. After days of floating, he finds land, but it's nothing he had seen before. He has to wait for three days to be able to walk to the mountain he sees.
People he sees depicted on the monolith have what would later be called the Innsmouth look.
