I feel compelled to write something a bit substantial here, since Mr. Whipple's books have a grand total of zero reviews, but the fact is I was only interested in this book because it is quoted in the epigraph for Lonesome Dove. The excerpt is from the essay "The Myth of the Old West," and it reads as follows: 'Our forebears had civilization inside themselves, the wild outside. We live in the civilization they created, but within us the wilderness still lingers. What they dreamed, we live; and what they lived, we dream.'
