Thank you NetGalley and Milari Press for this eCopy to review.

I didn’t expect a health guide to feel so personal, but YOU Are the New Prescription surprised me in the best way. Raja Ramaswamy blends clinical expertise with heartfelt storytelling, creating a wellness book that’s both empowering and deeply humane. It’s not about perfection, it’s about progress, and that message stayed with me long after I turned the final page.

💊 Plot Summary This isn’t a traditional narrative, but it does follow a clear emotional arc. Ramaswamy opens with two contrasting family events: a tragic suicide and a life-saving heart surgery. These moments frame the book’s central message that health is not just physical, but emotional, social, and deeply personal.

The guide is structured around small, intentional shifts that build toward lasting change. Each section begins with a personal anecdote, followed by clear explanations of health topics from mental wellbeing and heart health to the impact of screen time and gender-specific concerns. The advice is practical: choose one or two steps a week, reflect, and repeat. It’s a prescription for consistency, not intensity.

🧠 What I Loved
The Tone: Ramaswamy writes with compassion and clarity. His voice feels like that of a trusted mentor firm but kind, knowledgeable but never condescending.

The Structure: Each chapter builds on the last, with repetition used intentionally to reinforce key habits. Bullet-point summaries and actionable tips make the content easy to revisit.

The Holistic Approach: Mental health is treated as foundational, not secondary. I appreciated how emotional resilience, sleep, nutrition, and movement were all given equal weight.

The Call to Action: This isn’t a passive read. It nudges you gently but persistently toward reflection and change.

🧡 Final Thoughts
YOU Are the New Prescription is a thoughtful, accessible health guide that meets you where you are. It’s ideal for anyone feeling overwhelmed by wellness advice and looking for a grounded, sustainable way forward. Whether you’re starting fresh or seeking a reset, this book offers a roadmap built on empathy, science, and the belief that small steps matter.

As the author of YOU Are the New Prescription, I’m deeply grateful for the early feedback from readers on NetGalley. Here’s what a few of them had to say:

“This book blew me away! It was so informative and I will use so many of these tools in my everyday life. Honestly I feel like reading this book changed me a little.”
— Amanda Daugherty, NetGalley Reviewer

“I really wish everyone would read this book and others like it. Healthy is about good daily habits, not taking a pill or injection.”
— Cindy Coe, NetGalley Reviewer

“In a time more and more prescriptions are recommended, this book was a breath of fresh air. It shows that we can take a lot of matters into our own hands... Highly recommended for anyone with health issues, weight issues, or as a gift for those who do.”
— Sue Fernandez, NetGalley Reviewer

“The five-pillar approach (Nourish, Move, Recharge, Protect, Break Free) provides clear structure for sustainable health changes.”
— Natasha Birham, Bookseller via NetGalley

You Are The New Prescription gives good advice in a simple and concise format. It frames the context of common health conditions and provides a number of beneficial suggestions on how to optimise wellbeing. The book’s authors encourage introspection and facilitate action planning at key points throughout so this is a helpful book for someone looking for a consolidated resource. It’s a great tagline and I wholeheartedly agree with the concept.

However, I often found myself wanting more depth to the writing to satisfy my own curiosity. Some of the most interesting topics mentioned were described in a short paragraph as part of a summary or checklist. I felt these could have been explored with greater detail to enhance my understanding about applying the recommendations to my personal circumstances. I would have preferred a slightly different structure which reduced the repetition of advice in favour of supporting a more reader-centred critical reflection but perhaps that is the healthcare professional in me who is already familiar with much of this information!

I particularly appreciated the familial experiences shared by the authors but found some of the other named cases lacked this personal connection and didn’t necessarily add to the reading experience.

Great information

I felt like I related to this book on many levels. It gave me a confidence boost that I had already made some changes on my own but now I also have the next steps on how to continue making more positive changes for my own health. It felt like I was just chatting with a friend while reading this book and it's nice to know that I am not alone in my own struggles.

Quite a good read - very thorough and practical. Maybe too thorough though as some sections may not apply to you. I liked the checklists. Do bear in mind though that this book is American so some of the information does not translate in the UK.
