An easy to use, step-by-step guide to creating professional, mobile-friendly websites with the free Joomla CMS. The Joomla! 3 Beginner's Guide Second Edition is the ultimate guide for web developers who wish to build upon their skills and knowledge on creating websites. Even if you re new to this subject, you won t have any difficulty understanding the clear and friendly instructions and explanations. No prior knowledge of HTML and CSS is required."
This is an excellent book to read for anyone new to Joomla and considering using Joomla in future projects. Although Joomla is not massively difficult to start building with, the way it works is quite a bit different to many other publishing platforms. Therefore novice users can quickly end up isolated and unsure of how to get the most out of this software. Sometimes you want to just jump straight in and know how to create new pages and write content for those pages.
Joomla 3 for beginners by Eric Tiggeler covers just about everything. It starts off with a gradual introduction to what Joomla is and what sort of projects it is most suitable for. The book runs through the details of installation and setup of a dummy project. It then moves on towards the setup of articles, categories, navigation links and templates. Topics like SEO and security are also covered. Within just a few chapters, the book is already teaching you how to build quality websites and discussing lots of advanced features in Joomla.
Like many other Packt books, the book is well structured and laid out throughout. The 'have a go hero' and 'pop quiz' sections provide opportunities to practice what you've read and revise things again if you're unsure about something.
I don't have anything negative to say about this book. Speaking as someone who has only touched the surface of Joomla a few times in the past, I thought the book was excellent and covered everything someone new to Joomla would need to know. I suspect that despite this being branded as a 'beginners guide', there is also a lot of information contained within that could be useful for existing users or users seeking a quick recap.
Eerste hoofdstuk lezen en je hebt al een basis website. Is aangenaam. Je moet wel aandachtig lezen want eigenlijk komt heel veel aan bod aan de hand van een voorbeeld.
The Joomla 3 Beginner's Guide is another guide to the free Joomla! CMS. The book is the successor of Joomla 2.5 Beginner's Guide written by the same author. If you are a complete beginner to website design, by the end you will be able to built a complete good-looking custom content managed website and ready to build next in the future. It doesn't matter what kind of website you want to create - personal or company website. Exactly like the previous books from Eric Tiggeler, this one is well structured , well organized. It starts off with an introduction about Joomla (about current version, what is Joomla, why to choose it). Then it runs through the full details of installation, updating, setup and first steps of getting to know the CMS ( frontend, backend, control panel). Especially interesting is Chapter 4 which concerns web building basics. It learns how to customize Joomla's default sample site to fit to own needs. Later come informations about organizing content , adding new menus, new features, engaging web visitors to turn them into active users, easy navigation using menus, submenus, and text hyperlinks.
Eric Tiggeler doesn't forget about templates (Whole chapter 11 is about creating an attractive design) and Joomla extensions. SEO and security (securing website from potential treats) - are also discussed. Through 12 expanded chapters it helps you to learn the skills and get necessary knowledge. It is difficult to find any flaws or say anything bad about this book. If you’re a beginner, you won’t have any difficulty understanding the clear and friendly instructions and explanations. Even more - You don't need to be an expert in computer coding languages. This also does not mean that you will not find advanced tips for everyone.
For beginning web developers this is the book to start with.
This book teaches everything you need to start building sites using Joomla. It takes you step-by-step from start to finish and does not limit itself to teaching just the Joomla functionality. The author begins with the basics of having a webserver, setting up a database, downloading Joomla, installing it on your server, using a photo editor, etc. In other words, no previous experience needed!
After building a site using the core components, the author takes you to the Joomla Extensions Directory to download, install and implement third-party extensions as well as templates.
Who this book may not be suitable for: (1) If you are an experienced web developer looking to try Joomla, there are several chapters that you will not need, as described above. (2) If you have experience with earlier versions of Joomla and just want to learn the new features in Joomla 3, this is not the book for you.
I have been using Joomla since 1.0, so while I did not find this book suitable for me at this point in my career, for someone starting out in web development and wanting to learn on their own, this is the book to have. In fact, if I had had a book like this 10 years ago before quitting my job to go to school to study web development, I would have been able to learn on my own instead of spending $15k on tuition!
This is an excellent beginner's book. If you don't know anything about Joomla, and want to get a good grasp of its basic features, look no further: this is THE book you need. The author repeats with self-assurance the successful tone and path he used in the previous Joomla 1.5 and 2.5 beginner's book, and deliver a safe-bet product. Of course, I got terribly bored, but that's only because I already know everything he wrote :-) In other words: you're not meant to read this if you already know Joomla! and only want to know new stuff in version 3. This is only for beginners who never used Joomla! before. You can find the book here: http://www.packtpub.com/joomla-3-begi...
