Everyone asked why, but when I got my hands on my sister's diary, I understood exactly why.
I stared at the girl in the mirror as I removed my nose ring. Gone was the black hair, replaced by golden blonde locks that made my sapphire blue eyes shine and my California sun-kissed skin glow. The Goth chic clothes had been put away and I wore a pink tank top and a pair of khaki colored Capri’s. Stylish sandals completed the outfit. I wanted to barf.
The snotty little would-be witches would pay for what they'd done. By the end of the week, they’d all be praying to whatever god they worshipped to hide them from the hell coming for them.
May the Fates have mercy upon them, because they would pay the same price they’d demanded of her.
So who am I? Well, I'm the crazy girl with an imagination that never shuts up. I LOVE scary movies. My friends laugh at me when I scare myself watching them and tell me to stop watching them, but who doesn't love to get scared? I grew up in a small town nestled in the southern mountains of West Virginia where I spent days roaming around in the woods, climbing trees, and causing general mayhem. Nights I would stay up reading Nancy Drew by flashlight under the covers until my parents yelled at me to go to sleep.
Growing up in a small town, I learned a lot of values and morals, I also learned parents have spies everywhere and there's always someone to tell your mama on you. So when you get grounded, what is there left to do? Read! My Aunt Jo gave me my first real romance novel. It was a romance titled "Lord Margrave's Deception." I remember it fondly. But I also learned I had a deep and abiding love of mysteries and anything paranormal. As I grew up, I started to write just that and would entertain my friends with stories featuring them as main characters.
Now, I live Huntersville, NC where I entertain my family and watch the cats get teased by the birds and laugh myself silly when they swoop down and then dive back up just out of reach. The cats start yelling something fierce...lol.
I love books, I love writing books, and I love entertaining people with my silly stories.
exciting and intricate plot . this is the second book of a series but you can read it first. if you did read the promise first you will wonder how this is part of the series . never fear it will all come together seamlessly . witches , angels demons and action and adventure galore. Hidden in all the action is a great miral question. How do you right a wrong without turning yourself evil. the struggle of choices when no choice is perfect. a great discussion of right and wrong. Apryl added a chapter after I reviewed this book. we have glimpse into the darkness that Mel and C.J. must face. a fantastic read just got better.
Two words...... My goodness!!! This was such an awesome book. It was about a girl struggling with her sisters passing. ESP since she knew her sister didn't commit suicide like the report said. We got to follow along with Meli and her struggle of being a good with or turning dark to exact her revenge. So many great aspects to this story. Well worth the read!!!
This book is a brilliant follow on to The Promise. The excitement and intrigue is carried through and the tempo never falters. Interesting switch in heroines. Highly recommended when released and maybe room for further adventures in the Coven series . Def 5*
Not as good as the first book. There are other paranormal introduced and there's dealings with the good and dark and Angels have an indirect involvement in the events of this book. The ending was pretty quick with an obvious solution. While there is closure for Rose, the darkness CJ has been trying to find has been released and left the ending open to continue regarding that.
Another magical whirlwind, tying in characters from book one creating a masterpiece! Melinda is set on seeking revenge for her sister's death. She moves to VA, taking on a new persona in order to get close the wannabe witches who cast a spell making her sister kill herself. However, her plans are halted when a coming evil is revealed by her protector... Her revenge seems small with the balance of good and evil on her shoulders. Will she succumb to her darkness, forever damning her soul or will she make the right choice for humanity? This is a must-read series! I'm hoping book three is in progress because we're left with a bit of a cliffhanger at the end, yet it was still a great ending. 5 star series!
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Let me begin by saying that I love The Ghost Files and did like The Promise, however, The Oath, the second book in the Coven series, just didn't do it for me.
To start, I did not like the main character Melinda. She drove me bonkers and was just plain unlikable for my taste. Really what kept me reading was Xavier. He kept my interest through out the novel enough to keep me reading.
The Oath has some very strong and great intriguing ideas and characters. I love the legends and lore surrounding the witches. I loved the thought of the protector. Someone to keep a witch on the straight and narrow and make the right choices so they don't turn dark.
I loved that the guy I was certain was the bad guy actually wasn't. That was a lovely turn of events. The ending was a whip lash chain of events that I never saw coming and loved every minute of it. It happened the last 1/4th of the book and was I ever glad I kept on reading. It was well worth it!
All that being said, it didn't feel like the second in a series at all. There were some reoccurring characters that popped in but felt as though they had very little to do with the book. There was a mention of Melinda being scared of motorcycles because her best friend had died in a crash a few months before. Didn't feel like that was needed nor relevant.
I feel like this book sadly fell victim to "second in a series" merely a bridge to get from point A to point B. It took me 3/4ths of the book to decide that I actually liked it. Over all not one of my favorites. Yes I would say it needs to be read as it is paramount to the entire plot of the series. Just remember, you will thank me simply because of Xavier.
Melinda understands, after reading her half-sister’s diary, that magic had been used to force her to commit suicide and Mel, a powerful witch, is dead set on revenge. Changing from her Goth-look into a blond-haired Barbie doll, Mel goes to live with her grandmother in Falls Church, VA so she can go to the same school that Jenny went to and her plans could very easily turn her soul black as she gets accepted by the very kids that are responsible for Jenny’s death. Ah, but Xavier, a guy in her school, is just as determined to save her.
The Promise ended with the knowledge that something really dark was going to happen and that storyline continues with this book. To bridge the books, Cassie Jayne, Ethan and Jeff from the first book are on hand.
I enjoyed the romance angle as well as finding out the answers Mel sought. We did get more world building. Whereas The Promise centered on the descendants of the Salem Witch Trials, this world building is on a grander scale and I found this book more interesting because of it. But I wasn’t as thrilled with Mel, a smart girl in all other aspects, incapable of coming up with more than one solution to a challenge.
Let me just say, I'm a very big fan of Apryl's. I really liked her Ghost Files series, The Awakening, and even really enjoyed The Promise(the first book to this series.) Unfortunately, I feel like this book fell flat. For one, I'm not fond of stories that branch off into other characters. This is just my personal preference. This book doesn't have much to do with the first, although the characters from The Promise do show up in the story line. I felt The Promise had lots of suspense and was action packed, and brought out a lot of emotion. The Oath didn't really get good until the end, and even then I was disappointed. It felt a bit rushed. There is one aspect that Apryl branched into that I really liked. Overall, it took me forever to finish the book, when it normally takes me 3 days or less. I still plan to continue on with the series because I know Apryl writes great stuff, and it'll all come together into something awesome!
This one is about Melinda also known as Rose. Rose has a protector which in witch world means they come to protect you from doing something bad. If it comes down to it they will kill you before you can do it. Xavier is Melinda's protector, but there is a little twist. When they kiss the elements surround them and bind them into one. This isn't good for them because if Rose dies then Xavier dies. Melinda is trying to find out who killed her sister, and she wants blood for blood. Can Xavier stop her from killing or will he be forced to take both of their lives? CJ, Ethan, & Jeff are included in this story too, not as much as the first one but we do get to see them.
This followup to The Promise is just as thrilling and just as engaging. CJ and some of the characters from the first book make an appearance, but the main story is Melinda's. Unlike CJ in the previous book, Melinda knows she's a witch and doesn't try to hide it. She has three gorgeous guys to sort out, and all of them are worth rooting for. Melinda must decide whether to avenge her sister's murder or believe a new guy with a fantastical story. It's not an easy choice, but it's one that will keep you riveted to the last page.
Apryl Baker is the best!! At the very least, she is extremely imaginative. When I started "The Oath (The Coven #2)" my first thought was that it had a new character and therefore a new direction. But I soon found myself completely submerged in the story and was rewarded with the connection to the first book, "The Promise" and once again, had me spellbound.
Ms. Baker has a real talent for weaving the "real" world with the world of the supernatural and making it all seem so logical and normal. What a story.
April you did it again this was great...I suggest that reader's read The Promise & The Oath back to back I had to go back and read The Promise because I forgot a lot.....The way this book ended I can see another coming..the characters in both series are great and just a fun read..recommend to all who just wants to get lost in another world and have fun..Gina
I fell so hard for this book! I love witches and enjoy a clean read now and then, and this had both and of course some sweet men Xavier and Sebastian are both so wonderful I really enjoyed everything about this book can't wait to see what comes next for Apryl Baker this was a solid 5 star book!
Kind of threw me at first, I was hungry for more about CJ & Ethan! Instead I got another taste in what im now seeing as a buffet rather than a single serving!
