P.D. Workman’s books, nicely constructed and highly readable, never disappoint. Zachary Goldman is back with another challenging case. Who better to help a traumatized child than a private investigator who has survived his own trauma? Complex characters, a nice twisty plot, and fine storytelling make this one hard to put down. Highly recommended! I enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the next in the series. I received a complimentary copy of this book and chose to write a voluntary, unbiased review.
Zachary is an awesome person to feel the compassion necessary to reach Leo and earn his trust. It helps that he can understand what Leo is going through. This was a fantastic story. I love how P D Workman doesn’t shy away from tough topics. I highly recommend!
Another strong installment in Zachary’s journey, revealing deeper layers of his character. The gripping plot kept things engaging, and it’ll be exciting to see whether some of the new characters become part of future storylines.
If you have read anything by this award-winning author, you already know that sensitivity and compassion will feature prominently, especially when dealing with difficult or emotional issues. This story simply doesn’t let go of you; it has occupied my thoughts for days, and I suspect I shall reflect on it for some time to come. Zachary Goldman, a private investigator with more than his fair share of emotional baggage, takes on a case in which the father of a small boy has been brutally killed during a home invasion, and while the police think it is simply a random act of violence with a tragic outcome, there are questions. Questions that Zachary will answer no matter the personal cost once he has met the child now left fatherless. The boy's grief stirs up a great deal of Zachary’s past childhood traumas, and the investigation leads to some unexpected and dangerous findings. If the man was killed in a random act of violence, why was he tortured first? Was it simply sadism, or was this a targeted act perpetrated for some unknown purpose? I won’t spoil the story for you, but I will assure you that this, like all P. D. Workman’s stories, is a well-crafted and engaging mystery with characters that cannot help but become firmly fixed in the hearts and minds of the readers. The stories are always good, but it is, in my opinion, the multi-faceted characters with all their charm, their humanity, their faults, and their foibles that make these stories rise above the literary masses. I highly recommend this story and this series to all. ══════════════════ I was provided with an advance copy of this book, for which I thank the author, but my choice to share my honest and unbiased review is completely voluntary.
Zachary takes on a different challenge this time, when a young father is murdered and his wife is so upset she can’t handle taking care of their son. She gives him to a friend to watch until she’s able to take care of him again. At this point, Zachary joins the fray, ostensibly to help in solving the question of who brutally murdered Marco. Since Zachary had childhood trauma, it is thought that he might be able to somehow relate to the young son, Leo, who has been traumatized and is now staying with a family friend. Zachary decides to help the young boy and soon finds himself fully immersed in the mystery. Somehow, Zachary has to find the answers to who killed Marco and why, so that Leo’s mom will get better and be able to take care of Leo once again.
What a great story! This writer always finds the most intriguing plots to write about! And this book is no exception. Her attention to detail and ability to flesh out her characters so that they seem like they would walk off the page is so spot on! This is the 20th book in this series, but it’s a standalone, meaning you can read this book on its own if you like or you can read it in the series. I prefer to read the series because I really enjoy the author’s writing and I look forward to each new book in her series. She writes many different genres, mostly cozy mysteries, but some other genres as well. She is adept at researching before writing about a particular subject, and many of her books have been about current events or social situations. They give a voice to the voiceless and champion those who need someone to listen to them. Amazing writing!
Private Detective Zachary Goldman is asked to help find the murderers of the father of a young boy who has gone silent since the night of the murder. The police are treating it as a home invasion, but Zachary thinks it was targeted. While working on the case Zachary remembers his own traumatic history. He is able to connect with the Leo, who was home when the murder happened. Through patience and being able to relate to Leo, Zachary slowly figures out the puzzle pieces of the mystery. A surprising twist at the end leaves the reader thoroughly immersed in the solution. Another moving by P.D. Workman and a great addition to your library.
I received a complimentary ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Absolutely fantastic as always, full of surprises. Silence seems to be the case but will it help A small boy and plenty of unanswered questions. Loved this book from start to finish.
