The thing I find interesting about the book is that it's based on a true story about three brothers that robbed banks in Sweden in the beginning of the 90s. And, I have no recollections of it. Of course, I was around 12 years old when they started to rob banks and to be honest new around that time wasn't something I cared that much about unless it was things like the fall of the Berlin wall, etc. So, I was interested, to read this book even though it was a "fictional story" and not a biographical. There are similarities with the real robberies and the ones that committed them.

I can honestly say that it was not an easy book to read, I had trouble really getting interested in the book and most of the time I felt that the story just wasn't engrossing enough. But, that has more to do with me than the book. The book is in no way badly written, and for the right person that likes stories like this one will this book be perfect. I prefer more mystery stories, this story well, one know how it all will end. What I found interesting were the similarities between the boy's story and the cop that was after them. They both had the same kind of childhood, with an abusing father. They just turned out a bit different, even though one can't say that the cop turned out that well either since he really had relationship trouble.

I think that this book suits people that like to read fictional books about real crimes. If you, like me prefer books that have twists, then perhaps this is not four you. I struggled quite a lot to finish the book, there weren't enough in the story to really seize my interest. The best part was probably reading about the boys childhood and seeing how it formed the men they become.

I want to thank the publisher for providing me with a free copy for an honest review.

I ratted out my bank robber brothers

Description: An epic crime novel with the excitement of Jo Nesbo's Headhunters and the depth of We Need to Talk About Kevin, The Father is inspired by the extraordinary true story of three brothers who held Sweden to ransom, committing ten audacious bank robberies over just two years.

None had committed a crime before. All were under 24 years old. All of them would be changed forever.

In this intoxicating, heartbreaking thriller, the fourth brother, who was not involved in the real robberies, tells of three boys who grew from innocent children to become public enemy number one - and of the man who made them that way.

Opening: He's sitting in a yellow volkswagen van that smells of sweat and paint and something else he can't quite put his finger on.

This is an eye-scorching read: fictional treatment of true crime and (co) written by a family member. In no way does this account glamourise the criminals.

Pedestrian writing yet it gets the job done. Dual timeline, tense relationships, social conditioning. 'The Father' would make a great film. 3.5*

This novel is based upon a true story and centres around three brothers, plus their childhood friend, who become bank robbers; plus the detective who is hunting them. The book switches viewpoint between, ‘then’ and ‘now,’ unveiling a tragic tale of domestic violence and of a father who overshadows the lives of Leo, Felix and Vincent. Like the brothers, detective John Broncks, comes from a similar background and, like them, domestic violence erupted in family tragedy.

It is clear, from the beginning, that this is no ordinary crime novel – yet, a crime novel is precisely what it is. Leo involves Felix, Vincent and childhood friend Jasper, in undertaking breathtaking robberies; planned with precision, undertaken with nerve and with a long term plan of becoming financially independent. However, eventually, the initial euphoria of success, gradually begins to unravel. Leo’s relationship with his girlfriend comes under strain, Jasper is all too aware that he does not share the bonds of the three brothers and Leo cannot resist getting back in contact with the father who has overshadowed his life…

I found this a very moving, immersive and interesting book – made more so when you discover who the co-author of this novel is. John Broncks adds an almost mirror image of eldest brother, Leo. A man who has struggled with many of the same demons and whose understanding gives the storyline an extra dimension. Meanwhile, the shadow of the father – Ivan – falls across every page. As the men plan more and more audacious robberies, tension builds and relationships are tested. This really is a unique novel. As well as being an interesting personal read, it would be a good choice for book groups, with much to discuss. Lastly, I received a copy of this book from the publisher, via NetGalley, for review.

“Perhaps a family was something strong, with built-in solidarity, and was therefore a place where violence became purer, more brutal - it turned inwards, against its own, against those it’s cohesion should have protected”.

The Father is an epic saga, steeped in truth, intoxicating in its retelling. Written by Anders Roslund and Stefan Thunberg (collectively named Anton Svensson), it tells the story of the band of three brothers and one friend, who committed ten bank heists in Sweden over two years, holding the police at bay before finally being captured in an exhilarating and heart wrenching climactic chase following robbery number ten.

Stefan Thunberg, co-author, is the fourth brother who didn’t participate in the heists. From his unique and almost inside perspective he breathes life and soul into what is essentially a story about family and the ties that bind. The influence of the father, permeates this drama and ultimately underpins the brothers’ trajectory. The father is always in the background, always on the shoulder, always present. For this family violence was the language and fear was the culture. Power and abuse were weapons that were wielded freely and each of the sons grappled with this in their own way.

I couldn’t help but be in awe of the ties that bound the brothers together and in some ways incredibly envious of their relationship until it inevitably broke down. As violence took hold, the brothers became increasingly alienated from each other as the father permeated each of them in his own way.

I was reminded afresh of the power of addiction and greed. Bank robbery after bank robbery, never enough, a hunger for more, always a reason to go back for one more. Inevitably this was the downfall.

This was an amazing read. One I’ve been keen to read for a long time and I’m pleased I finally did. Looking forward to the second in the series. 5 stars.

I'm trying to get my head around what I really thought of this one. On one level it is fascinating - the (based on a true story) story of brothers who committed violent robbery in part because their father was a violent man - written by one of the brothers! I certainly didn't find it hard to read and it kept me engaged. However there is a however! Reflecting on it it simply didn't do for me what the Harry Hole books by Jo Nesbo did for me for example. I guess the writing is quite as taught and - daft given it is based on the true story - the characters didn't really grab me that much, a couple of them were a little less believable. Good but...

Thanks to Quercus for the copy in exchange for my honest review.

I had originally requested THE SONS by Anton Svensson (releasing in early March) but then I was told that it is part two in a series and that I needed to read THE FATHER before diving in. I'm so happy that I did. This book sucked me in from the first page and held on until the end. With it being almost 600 pages I was surprised at how quickly I read this one.

This is based on the true story of the brothers and father that rocked Sweden with multiple violent bank robberies, a bomb threat, and the largest weapons theft in European history. The first chapter was crazy - the violence these boys faced as children definitely sets the tone for the duration of the story.

Leo, Felix, and Vincent are brothers and were always told that they are a clan, and a clan never turns on each other. These qualities were engraved into their minds by their violent and proud father, Ivan. The book bounces back forth between Now and Then (clearly marked as different parts). I thought this was great because after events in the present we are then brought back to their childhood and see the events that ended up molding these sons into the bank robbers they've become.

It's so hard to really describe all the events in this without ruining the reading experience. I highly recommend picking this one up. Not only is it based on true events and people, but brings the reader into the minds of these boys and their father. What breeds a criminal? We also get to see the investigation end of the story with Detective Broncks as he desperately tries to find out who these highly sophisticated bank robbers are.

After reading this book I realized that Anton Svensson is the pseudonym for Anders Roslund and Stefan Thunberg. Stefan is the 4th brother of the Military League - the name that the Swedish newspapers gave the criminal gang. That added an element to the novel for me that set it apart.

I give this one 5/5 stars!

MADE IN SWEDEN PART 1 THE FATHER
Boldly Violent Tale Based on Truth, 17 Aug. 2015

This is a violent but brilliantly-written novel based on true events, where the meaning of family is pushed to its limits—and then beyond.

For brothers Leo, Felix and Vincent Duvnjac, family life is one of violence. Their father Ivan solves problems with his fists and encourages his sons to do likewise. When the violence turns to marital abuse and deliberate arson, Leo leads his two brothers away to start a life on their own. Unfortunately, this life merely mirrors the violence that Leo has imbibed during his time at home.

So begins what, to me, is a very violent novel, where the sins of the father are replicated in the sons. They embark upon a series of armed bank robberies, following the theft of a huge arsenal of weapons. Thus the violence they witnessed in their home lives is reproduced in their robberies. Whilst no one is actually killed, the level of threat is very high and people are mentally if not physically injured.

Investigating what, for Sweden, is the most violent series of bank robberies ever, is John Broncks of the City Police. He also is the product of a violent home life, and whose own brother is in jail for having stabbed his abusive father to death. Thus we see violence as the centre piece of this novel, from both sides of the law.

The novel is almost mesmeric in its fascination with violence, but I must confess that I did enjoy the writing. The characters are big, bold and convincing and I ended up feeling in some ways sorry for the Duvnjac boys. The novel switches time-frames easily and this seems to enhance its overall tightness, with the switches from ‘THEN’ to ‘NOW’ reinforcing the boys’ violent childhood.

Anton Svensson is a pseudonym for Stefan Thunberg and Anders Roslund. The former is one of Scandinavia’s foremost screenwriters, whose works include Henning Mankell’s Wallender series, and the latter is an award-winning investigative journalist. This novel is based on true events that happened to Thunberg when his father and two brothers commenced their series of criminal activities. – Sméagol

Made in Sweden, v originály Bjorndansen (Medvedí tanec), je dokonalým príkladom toho, aká silná dokáže byť súrodenecká láska. Niektorí čitatelia po takej možno túžia, iní by ňou boli doslova zahltení. Hlavným hrdinom tohto príbehu však prerástla cez hlavu. Avšak aký vzorec vidí dieťa v detstve, taký má tendenciu opakovať v dospelosti, i keď podvedome.

This book was ok but that's its problem. It was just ok.It didn't go the way I was expecting.I am not even sure why I did not enjoy it more.I liked the writing but I did not like the things the author chose to focus on.I would prefer more scenes from the past because honestly they felt disconnected with the now scenes.Nothind made me understand or justify their actions especially Leo's.I was even annoyed at some point with him as I felt he was just deliberately trying to get caught.Still this gets a 3 star rating as the writing was that good.

Η αφήγηση μοιράζεται ανάμεσα σε δύο χρόνους, το παρελθόν και το παρόν. Το παρελθόν αφορά τα παιδικά χρόνια των δραστών, και την οικογενειακή τους ζωή που καλλιέργησε τους μελλοντικούς, ενήλικους εαυτούς τους. Το παρόν αφορά την περίοδο της δράσης τους, που θα μπορούσε να χαρακτηριστεί και ως θριαμβευτική. Και όσο διαβάζεις, δεν μπορείς να μην σκεφτείς πως πέρα από μια εγκληματική ιστορία, το συγκεκριμένο βιβλίο αποτελεί και μια κοινωνιολογική και ψυχογραφική ανάλυση. Μπορεί η "Στρατιωτική Ομάδα" ν' αποτελείται από μέλη θύτες, όμως στην πραγματικότητα έχουν υπάρξει και οι ίδιοι θύματα της δικής τους ζωής. Άραγε, μπορούμε απλά να τους κατακρίνουμε για τις πράξεις τους, ή μήπως, κάπου στο βάθος του ασυνείδητού μας, μπορούμε να τους αιτιολογήσουμε, αφού υπήρξε πρόσφορο έδαφος ώστε να μεταμορφωθούν σε κάτι που υπό άλλες συνθήκες δεν θα γινόντουσαν;

For some unknown reason I was slightly reluctant to start The Father. I think, as mentioned in some reviews before, the fact this novel was translated from Swedish and was set in Sweden made me a little anxious. My geography skills and knowledge of other cultures is somewhat lacking and I worried that I wouldn’t really be able to immerse myself in this novel due to the lack of info I know about Sweden. However I couldn’t have been more wrong and I wish I’d started reading this sooner. The Father is one of the best books I have ever read.
The Father is based upon the true story of Sweden’s most notorious bank robbers; a family of brothers and their father who commit some of the most audacious robberies the world has ever seen. Told through sections in the present and sections explaining the families past, The Father had me gripped from the very start. We follow the men as they start to plan the robberies and are with them right until the tense ending that had me strangely conflicted.
That was the best part about this book for me: I wanted the robbers to succeed. I was on their side the whole way through. I can’t believe that I was supporting their cause and thinking what they were doing was OK, but I was so sucked into their story and felt such intense feelings for the characters that I couldn’t help but cheer them on and punch the air when something went right. Strange, eh?! Never before have I wanted criminals to have such success!
As mentioned, the novel switches between past and present to great effect. Reading about the brothers and their younger years was really revealing and gave such a brilliant insight into why they turned into the people that they did. I have to admit though the scenes in the present were my favourite. I was in awe as I read about their intricate and incredible plans and wished I was a clever and daring as them!
I’m not sure if that was quite what the authors intended…that I would suddenly want to join the clan of robbers, but as I turned the final page of the novel I felt like I’d been on the most adrenalin-filled journey of my life. Not only do we follow the gang of brothers, we also follow a policeman, Broncks and his quest to find the infamous robbers and stop them in their tracks. He was a great secondary character and even though I felt as though I wanted him to fail (I can’t believe how strongly I supported the brothers!!) I was really intrigued reading about his past too and learning about him as a character.
I just wish I could read more and more and more! The Father is called Made In Sweden: Part One and so I am crossing my fingers and toes and everything else in the hope that there shall be a part two! I so desperately want to find out what happens to them all next and follow their journey even further.
I cannot express how much I loved this book. It’s haunting to think that what happened within those pages actually happened in real life and it makes it all the more shocking and thrilling. Anton Svennson is actually a name for two men; a scriptwriter and one of the brothers who didn’t get involved in the robberies…can you imagine? Your whole family becoming the country’s most notorious criminals and robbing banks at gun point…it just screams to be written about!
The writing is fabulous throughout and, for a book so long, there was never a moment that I felt a lull in the narrative or got bored reading. I was glued to page after page and didn’t want to put it down. I wish I could give this book to everyone to read. It really is an astounding book that I will read and reread for years to come.
The Father is a must-read novel for everyone.

Normally I don’t read books like ‘The Father’. I read crime books, mysteries and detectives but a based-on-a-true-event crime novel, written through the eyes of the ‘criminals’ is definitely a first for me. But this book just sounded so good, and the cover looked amazing, I decided it was time to try out a book like this.

Although this book is very different than my normal reads, I was hooked to the pages from the moment I started reading. The authors definitely have a special way of writing and I was completely intrigued by it. This book alters between the past and the present, and it alters between the point of view of all the main characters. That sounds like a confusing part, but for this book it really worked perfectly.
On the front of my review copy of ‘The Father’, it says: “How does a child become a criminal? How does a father lose a son?”. And throughout this book, we get the answers to these questions.

We get to read parts of the bank robbers, Leo, Felix and Vincent’s youth, which really made me feel for them. And yes I know they are supposed to be the ‘bad’ guys, but they were also really human to me. Greedy and out of control.. Yes, but they didn’t sound like these truly terribly and angry people. Throughout everything they were brothers at first. Brothers who had a terrible example as a father and who taught them violence.

Reading about the robberies and about the detective wo was trying to catch them, it was really thrilling an nerve wrecking. On the one hand I was rooting for the detective to catch those robbers, but on the other hand I was rooting for Leo, Felix and Vincent. These authors definitely did a great job with making you think all kinds of things. In the end I almost didn’t know who I wanted to win.

From the moment I started reading this book, I just didn’t want to stop. I really wanted to know how this story would end. And I wasn’t satisfied until I reached the very end of the book and knew what happened.
‘The Father’ was definitely a great read. It was different, thrilling, confusing and definitely just very good.

The Father: Made in Sweden, Part I by Anton Svensson, translated by Elizabeth Clark Wessel.

The Father, part one of a two-novel series is a work of fiction inspired by a true story of three brothers and a best friend who committed a string of daredevil bank robberies across Sweden in the 1990s.
None of them have ever committed a crime before and are all under the age of 24.
This fabulous crime thriller is actually written by the fourth brother (real life), who never committed any crimes and grew up to become a screenwriter.
I should add that Anton Svensson is a pseudonym for Anders Roslund, an award winning investigative journalist and Stefan Thunberg is the real life brother and one of Scandinavia's most celebrated screenwriters.
After saying all of the above...it is a fantastic read...not only a crime story but also how family dysfunction can play a major part in some of our personalities which cause people to just continue the abuse and react to live in the same way as the abuser.
The man in those pictures solved his problems like a child in an adult world, and that was why he was successful---thinking in ways the cops didn't and getting around their roadblocks using the kind of magic tricks you'd find wrapped in a box under the Christmas tree. The police knew how to deal with adult criminals, but not this, an inventiveness as fascinating as it was unpleasant.
I'll say it again....IF you love crime and thrillers...you will LOVE The Father

Inspired by a true story!

A story based on three brothers that became known as notorious Swedish bank robbers of all time. International media thought them to be brilliant masterminds although they were all under the age of 24. The story was written by a journalist with the help of the fourth brother.

An incredible journey throughout for these young boys. A violent abusive father and a forgiving mother were just the beginning. The relationships that they shaped, torn apart and remade will have you shaking your head many times. It’s amazing that even though they ended up doing the unthinkable for most people, it seemed as a solution to their problems were right at their fingertips. They would not fail.

Deeper within the story you will understand the lengths these boys had to go to for survival. What is the final straw before you kill a parent? Who really survives? Can out come to terms, and live with the decisions you are forced to make? These are questions I asked myself, and I am sure you will also experience as you walk along with the most amazing tale I’ve read in a long time.

Read for the 666 for 2016 - An Around the World Reading Challenge
Not for the faint hearted, this book packs a punch combining marital abuse, arson, robbery, alcohol abuse....but its the intricacy of the crimes committed that leaves you somewhat in awe of 3 brothers with no previous criminal activities on their wrap sheet, and therefore no footprint for the detective to hunt.
This was a compelling read that had me completely hooked from the start.
Co-written by a brother of 3 men who committed ten bank robberies in Sweden, the book switches viewpoint between, ‘then’ and ‘now,’ which creates a violent but brilliantly written novel.
