Review from first read in 2018 below (second read in 2022 changing it from 5 stars to 4)

Still loving this manga! I actually choose this to read right now thinking it was the least likely to make me cry of graphic novels i wanted to get to this month...I still got teary. Happy tears though! This manga makes me happy <3 And a bit sad sometimes but mostly happy.

I'm loving getting to know the characters more over time, seeing more of Megumi's backstory and Isami Aldini! Two of my favorite characters! Soma of course is as well, and Yuki Yoshino. Nao....love her as a character....am kinda scared of her. Also Zenji, with the knowledge thing, I liked that. Even if I have favorite characters though I do love all of them in their own ways!

I also love how they are all so different and easy to tell apart! I'm not very observant or good with characters but even if I forget who is who (my issue not the manga's) there is characters with who is who in the beginning of each novel and they are so easy to tell apart! I love that! That isn't always easy to find in manga.

Still loving the competitions, the food, the art. And every volume leaves me wanting to read the next one right away, even if i'm trying to space them out (still haven't gotten them all yet).

❝I want you to go see how big the world is, at least once.❞
Unfortunately, Food Wars! Volume 7 is not as compelling as the previous volumes. The story was bogged down by focusing too much on the secondary characters. Souma barely makes an appearance in this volume, even though he is the title character. Hopefully, the next volume will be more promising.

Update: My full review! http://bookishrealmreviews.blogspot.c...

While this wasn't my favorite volume it really did show the ability of the writer to analyze the information needed to create a food manga and I really appreciated that. The dishes in this volume were described with such detail you can't deny that the writer hasn't done his research. Full review on blog coming soon!

The lower rating isn't because it's bad, necessarily. It's just very much a filler volume. I understand the point of it - it introduces a few new characters, and lets readers learn more about them and some of the other secondary characters. It just feels very much like a stepping stone between volumes.

I can't think of any reason I would be obsessively reading escapist junk like a cooking manga right now, nosiree.

And now for the continuation of Battle Curry! 🍛 (Which also continues into volume 8 ...)

This volume went a lot more in depth with all of the dishes each person made and also gave some much-needed backstory for characters we barely know. I'm still really enjoying all of the food trivia too.

As expected picked up steam as it goes deeper in to its first tournament arc. It also gave a lot of screen time to minor characters that have been introduced earlier. The food too, and the recipes provided, have become a little more exotic than your usual egg on rice fare.

Wow this arc was much was good but a bit too heavy and rich (pun intended).

World: The art is solid, it’s Shonen fare with nice illustrations of the food. There is a lot of foodgasm this time around and some were actually quite creative and made me giggle. The world building on the other hand is a bit overwhelming with the amount of characters and the amount of food and recipe that though there is a lot of depth here it gets a bit overwhelmed with just the sheer amount.

Story: The story is basic here, it’s the competition and this entire issue is all the competitors showing off their food and the judges eating and having foodgasms. There is a lot of characters so it’s food, foodgasm, score, food, foodgasm, score...repeat repeat repeat and so by the end it became too much and bit too filling if I am to use a cooking reference for this. It’s good, but yeah there was just way too much and it overwhelmed in the end. Although I will say that Megumi’s story did make me tear up a bit cause she’s awesome.

Characters: A lot of characters and a lot of their background is explained in their food, there is a deceptive amount of depth here or at least introduction on these characters that have been in the background for a while now. There is depth in Megumi, Aldini brothers and some of the Polaris students. Good stuff.

Really filling and at time too much of the same thing, it’s fun but I’m stuffed.

Onward to the next book!

The Autumn Election really showcased a lot of students and their different styles of cooking, which I really enjoyed.

**Review in Progress**

Oh, why is my mind stuck on food after reading this? It even now has me playing a silly cooking cake (Go-go Gourmet) right now for mixing ingredients.

This volume is all about the latest contest! Lots of competitions, surprises and upsets on both the cooking teams. I hope the readers like curry. That is the cooking theme. But the way in which it is used are vast and very unique. Lots of cooking styles, ingredients and recipes fill every page of this book. Honestly, it is a bit overwhelming in this volume with the details of each presentation. I think we are shown about a dozen in just this volume! But it also left me hungry and wanting to experiment in my own kitchen!

This volume will introduce each character's specialisation and how they acquired the strength which related to their past. The mangaka's knowledge in culinary is very impressive. As the story getting further, it reveals more of the mangaka's broad knowledge in culinary and his story-telling skill for such specific theme is outstanding. I'm looking forward to read the next volume and hopefully I will rate 5 out of 5 for one of the volumes in the future.

Book 1 for #7in7readathon

I haven't been out of the world long but it felt good coming back to it. I think this might be one of my favorite volumes so far. We get to see more about the side characters and what they are capable of. I loved that we got to see the skills and not just hear how good certain people are. As always I'm really looking forward to continuing on, and I'm trying to fight the temptation to forget the rest of my TBR.

This one had a lot of information, but also felt jumbled. A lot harder to follow, but appreciate the attempt of giving each character their limelight.

In the seventh volume of Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma, we are in the preliminary round of the 43rd Annual Totsuki Autumn Election. It is a special annual event held for the first years of Totsuki Academy in which they compete in a tournament in which the winner earns a seat on the Elite Ten Council.

This entire volume contains chapters that concentrate on the preliminary round of the event. The students are split up into two groups, Block A and Block B. They will then create their own dishes in hopes of earning a score high enough to make it into the top four for each block who will then qualify for the quarterfinals of the competition.

Characters worth noting in each block are Soma Yukihira, Akira Hayama, Ikumi Mito, Ryo Kurokiba, Ryoko Sakaki, Shun Ibusaki, Subaru Mimasaki, and Zenji Marui in Block A and Alice Nakiri, Hisako Arato, Isami Aldini, Megumi Tadokoro, Miyoko Hojo, Nao Sadatsuka, Takumi Aldini, and Yuki Yoshino in Block B.

I will not spoil who advances and who doesn't, but I do love the fact that during their respective presentation of dishes, each character highlighted in their chapter has their back story or motivation told on why they want to become world-renown chefs from Totsuki Culinary Academy. They all have a particular reason for their cause and it makes each of them more relating on an empathetic level.

It should be noted that the preliminary round does not finish in this volume. There are two more chapters in the preliminary round and they are featured in the following volume. Still, this volume is worth reading on the basis that more dishes are shown here than in any other volume I have read thus far. Thankfully, the volume provides the recipes for said dishes too so readers can try to recreate the culinary masterpiece at home.

Volume 7: 49-57
Episode 21 : Vol. 6, Ch. 48, Vol. 7, Ch. 50-52
Episode 22 : Vol. 7, Ch. 55[end]-57
Episode 23 : Vol. 7, Ch. 53-55, 58[beg]

I totally did this by episode and not by the chapters because I was watching the anime at the same time. I figured that it was faster this way.

Episode 21. AWWW. The boys are totally behind their members. I love the gangster boys though I completely forget that they were going to the school since they aren't competing in the Election. Mannn... I totally want to eat these. HAHA. In the manga, they use "goosefish" but in the anime, they call it "monkfish". Oh, I just looked it up and they are the same thing. Tadakoro is so cute but she's one of those characters that I'll probably always look over for especially since she seemed to rely, so heavily, on Souma for a long time. The person that taught her how to butcher. I wonder if that was her father. SHE DID IT SO WELL. SO PROUD OF THE PRECIOUS BABY.

AHHH. I've always thought that Isami was a cutie and now that he's lost his weight, temporarily, he's even cuter.

HAHA. Nao uses stuff that normal people wouldn't use. Wait, no. Everybody does that. I mean that she makes "death stuff". I know that the descriptions read that it smelled like a sewer or a toilet bowl that hasn't been cleaned but I really want to know what it smells like. I mean, in general, I think that fish dishes don't smell particularly great.
Ohhh. I see why Nao really dislikes Hisoka now. They used to have a Shokugeki and Nao lost. The bet was that if Nao lost then she was to stay away from Erina with a 50m radius. Dang. She must really be that insane. HAHA.

I really like how each person has a type of cooking, their specialty. Now we've learned that Hisako specializes in medicinal cooking. HAHAHHAA. Oh, man. I figured that Hisako had to be some sort of great cook because she is the God's Tongue's assistant. Now that we know how powerful she is, Nao even comes to light. NAO IS SO CUTE. Seems that Hisako has a new follower. HAHA. WHELP. We've reached the 90's now. We're going to get very close.

Episode 22. Ohhh. I totally forgot that Hojou was in Block B with Nao and Megumi. She only got a score 87 so she beat Nao but was beat by Hisako. That would've been nice to know. HAHA. I didn't see the name that they bumped down in the last episode but I suppose that it was hers. MANNN. So many of the main characters are in each Block and only four of them are going to get to continue on. Does this mean that the ones who aren't chosen leave the school? I mean, I don't think so because the ones that weren't selected are still attending to watch this election.

AWWWW. One of our Polar Star girls made it!! I keep on forgetting her name but she's so cute. The one who doesn't have boobs. HAHA. Also, the brothers. YESSS. Their little rivalry, mang. I want to try this challenge so much. HAHA. Isami really wants to beat his brother, mang. So he was the one that booted Nao out of the competition but she's completely fine with it since she now has a new person that she can stalk. Man. I wonder how does the author create so many dishes for the challenge. They must've done so much research because all of their characters are so vast. That's exciting. We learned what the Mezzaluna was to the brothers. It's a nice metaphor. So Takumi is the one that bumped down Hojo. HAHA. Alice just goes right in. I still wonder if the MC knows how to cook, too. Alice deals with the scientific types of cooking. She looks like an alien so it's fitting. HAHA. Alice, of course, is now in first place. Wait. No. She's the one that bumped down Hojo. OHHH. I didn't realize that Hojo and Isami tied. Man. MEGUMI'S TURN. HAHA. Awww. Her homeland old guys came out to support her. I didn't know that this event was open to the public. HAHA. STILL. That's so sweet. Megumi is so sweet. I want to say that she's like me but she's so much better than what she really says. AWWW. MEGUMI IS IN FOURTH PLACE, bumping Hojo and Isami down. My heart. Hurts so much for the others. HAHA but awww. Megumi``

Episode 23. Whelp. Block A is totally the harsher one. Of course the older sister, who is more scarier, comes to this Block. She hasn't given anybody points if they didn't deserve it though I'm sure that even her younger twin sister would've given them a 1 or a 2. HAHAHA. Orie--no, wait. the other sister. Yeah. She totally was just bossed around by Ryou after he put on his bandana. I found that funny for some reason. The host for Block A is so cuteee. So much different than the MC that we're used to in Block B. HAHA. HAHAHA. Block B. Kpop. Yeah.

So Kurokiba is the first one to gather up some points. Whelp. These guys in Block A have got a lot of competing to do. 93 is way high to pass. Nikumi goes next and makes it to second place. Ryoko goes afterwards and ties in with Nikumi. I wonder if we're going to see some sort of tie in this Block. MARUISHI IS NEXTTT. Marui lands in second places above Nikumi and Ryoko. WHOOP, WHOOP. After Marui goes Ibusaki. Our "save-the-best-for-last" characters are hitting them right and left with no time to take a break! Ibusaki then goes and moves in second, moving Marui down to third.

NIKUMI IS SO CUTE. HAHA. And the guy who is the "leader" of Don RS is like a father. HAHA. He's totally me doting on my hosts at work. Now the older twin sister is just being pounded by great dishes. HAHA. OMGGGG. HAYAMA IS SO HOT. HAHAHA.

Gahhh. I've been trying to figure out which chapters, from the manga, were used in the episode of 22. I haven't gotten it to it yet since the next chapters seem to be used for episode 23. I'm just watching and reading these chapters until I reach it so that I can finish my "review" of the episode. OH. FINALLY. THE END OF 55. HAHA. In the manga, they also did a popularity and character poll. Awww. It's so cute that they are eating the dishes that tied them for the spot. HAHAHA. HAYAMA GOT SOUMA'S NASTY MEAL. HAHA.

Another cooking contest underway and the judges are tougher than ever. Each student is showcased with their specialties, many of them the "background characters" so you get a bit more of them here. This series is all about food, the love of it, the making of it, and the way it can be enjoyed with ALL of the senses. I can still "smell" that squid in curry. Ugh! It really gets in your brain. The overreactions of people are genuinely hilarious. Why wouldn't a tasty dish make your clothes fall off? The art is creative, the recipes are detailed. Such a great story!

I enjoyed the portion of the series. Volume 7 starts with the judging portion of the preliminary round in the autumn classic. The volume starts off with block a. the judging and reactions the famous panel complement the chef's view of curry really well. However, it does get a little repetitive because of the number of supporting characters' dishes. Though there are some notable selection, particularly: Megumi Tadokoro, Zenji Mauri, Ikumi Mito, Aldini twins, and Ryo Kurokiba.

This volume puts the spotlight on many of the characters we've never really seen in action, along with a couple of our old friends. It's a lot of fun, and as an added bonus, the illustrations for the popularity poll are very funny. While we still don't get the real meat of the competition, this is a much more interesting competition than we've seen thus far.

Soma's and Megumi's rounds bookend this volume, giving the story a great kick off and a bang-up ending. The middle section, with the introduction of all the other crazy cooking contestants, isn't as strong but moves along quickly and has several good moments.
