A multimedia tactile reading experience that explores a struggle between superheroes and supervillians as it’s never been done before.
A young girl named Gaby has joined a superpowered terrorist organization called Bad Mask...eternally struggling against the world’s savior, a super-intelligent robot named Metal Metro. But what if Metal Metro isn’t all he seems to be? And what if Bad Mask isn’t what Gaby expects either?
Readers will explore the world and the mystery of Bad Mask in a way rarely seen before. A boxed narrative consisting of newspapers, magazines, comic books, trading cards, digital files, and more, it will be up to the reader to follow Gaby on her mission of discovery, and get to the bottom of Bad Mask.
From the mind and hands of indie comics superstar Jon Chad comes a multi-media storytelling experience unlike anything you've ever read before.
Hugely ambitious and very well produced, but the stories not quite a match for me. Probably aimed at a younger audience, though. I could see some nerdy kids enjoying this.
This "book" is really a box containing a kids comic, a set of trading cards, a training manual for Black Mask agents, a newspaper, a magazine, a file folder with an incedent report, etc. Just look at all this stuff:
The point is that as you read all this different material you start to see that not all of it is trustworthy. So, it is sort of teaching young readers to read between the lines. Potentially a valuable lesson, though it can also lead people to trust nothing or to seek out and believe the wildest conspiracy theories.
There is no doubt that Jon Chad is talented. But this one isn't for me. Rounding-up my score, though, because of the scope and ambition.
This was easily the most unique reading experience I've ever experienced. To call this project a "book" doesn't do it justice! In its box are a series of artifacts (a comic book, a set of playing cards, a manual, a magazine, a newspaper, a file folder) and clues that eventually lead you to more artifacts that have been archived online. When you read them all a narrative emerges about a conflict between a terrorist organization known as Bad Mask and a sentient robot called Metal Metro.
I've known Jon for a long time, and have seen him implement his love for design in various minicomics and book projects. It now feels like I never saw his full powers of design on display until this project! I can only imagine the amount of work that went into meticulously recreating these artifacts within the world of Bad Mask. I've never felt anything like the immersive experience that came from digging through all these publications.
Beneath the unique format there is a solid story with some great plot twists, and tons of amazing illustrations and comics. If you are into giant robots, you will LOVE this project!
