En una palabra, decepcionante. Tras la magnífica ‘El mapa del tiempo’ y la extraordinaria ‘El mapa del cielo’, Félix J. Palma cierra su Trilogía Victoriana con ‘El mapa del caos’, una, para mí, innecesaria novela. De nuevo nos encontramos a H.G. Wells, a su esposa Jane, y a Gilliam Murray, así como a otros personajes, como Arthur Conan Doyle y Lewis Carroll. Esta vez la historia va de universos paralelos y espiritismo, en una trama que tarda en arrancar y que avanza con excesiva lentitud. Doscientas páginas de preámbulo, a ratos tedioso. A continuación, otras doscientas páginas donde el tema principal es el espiritismo, que llega a agotar. Y una última parte más activa, a la que he llegado exhausto y poco interesado.
En resumen, una trilogía que debería haberse quedado en bilogía, ya que no aporta nada nuevo. He encontrado más calidad en uno solo de los relatos de Palma, que en toda esta novela.

Não gostei tanto deste volume como dos dois anteriores, pois achei a história demasiado confusa e demasiado "explicativa".
Também não ajudou nunca ter conseguido desligar-me do facto de estar a ler em espanhol, com todos os seus "falsos amigos" e alguns vocábulos e expressões cujo significado precisei de procurar. Não me lembro de isto ter acontecido dum modo tão evidente no volume anterior, que também li no original.
No entanto, o autor conseguiu manter-me sempre interessada nos acontecimentos, bem como nas motivações dos personagens principais, entre as quais se encontra Arthur Conan Doyle, para além do já nosso conhecido H.G. Wells.
Recomendo a toda a gente que tenha gostado do primeiro livro, O Mapa do Tempo (o único traduzido em Portugal), que leia toda a trilogia - e que o faça no espaço de alguns meses, de modo a não perder a continuidade.
Uma nota final: a sinopse que consta na contracapa refere-se a acontecimentos que apenas têm lugar a partir de mais de metade do livro, pelo que constituem obviamente um spoiler...

This trilogy is one of the top-5 books I have ever read in my entire life: it is one of the most unique, original, beautifully-written, lovely, and brilliant novels that has some of the most exciting multi-dimensional characters and original story-lines that I have ever journeyed through. "The Map of Time" uses the brilliance of H.G. Wells' "The Time Machine" as an important contribution to Palma's universe; "The Map of the Sky" uses Wells' "War of the Worlds" to influence the story-line; and "The Map of Chaos" utilizes "The Invisible Man" in magnificent and unexpected ways. And the author's ability to unify his own fictional world with the fictional universes created by H.G. Wells is an astounding and magnificent piece of literary artistry. You will never look at books, at authors, or at the universe in the same way ever again. These books will leave you breathless and contentedly saddened, almost as if these books had become an ocean of friendship, warmth, affection, and brilliance, but then the end of the trilogy forces the reader into a bitter-sweet "farewell" to one of the most exciting and lovely literary friends you will ever have in your life. An amazing, beautiful, wonderful journey.

Aquí ha pasado algo. Un autor que acostumbra a rozar la excelencia aquí coquetea con la mediocridad. Un prólogo excelente y prometedor, al nivel del resto de la trilogía. Un desarrollo demasiado taciturno, y sin esas introspecciones apasionantes que nos regalaba antes. Personajes aplanados, que no aportan cosas nuevas y de un romanticismo mucho más gratuito.
Y, de repente, parece que el autor quiere acabar el libro a toda costa. Explica todo el percal, dice quiénes son todos los personajes y sus claras motivaciones en una sucesión de capítulos con un ritmo violentamente rápido, deseando que llegue un clímax para el que el lector no está preparado en ningún caso. Félix J. Palma es un autor de novelas extensas, y una comercialización ágil de esta obra ha provocado su empeoramiento.
Lo mejor: la ambientación, la originalidad y la imaginación del autor, así como las subtramas y cómo encajan.
Lo peor: el bajón de calidad, el recorte de longitud, la precipitación y la repentina mediocridad de sus personajes.
Me quedo con el Mapa del Tiempo y el Mapa del Cielo, auténticas obras maestras. Se puede prescindir de esta conclusión.

3.5 estrellas. En mi opinión no es tan bueno como los anteriores, pero aún así ha sido un buen cierre para esta magnífica trilogía. Muy interesante, ameno, divertido...

He estado un buen rato pensando en cuantas estrellitas ponerle, ¿cuatro? ¿cinco? por que me ha parecido el mas "flojo" de los tres, con una trama a veces un poco confusa y que le cuesta un poquillo arrancar. Por ejemplo en este la historia de Clayton no es que me haya disgustado pero si se la hubiese ahorrado tampoco hubiesese pasado nada...
Pero al final y mirando en conjunto toda la trilogía finalmente se lleva (igual que los dos anteriores) 5 estrellas.
Porque los tres me han hecho disfrutar, por la estupenda narración de Palma y por esos personajes que el autor hace tan entrañables, que al final acabas cogiéndoles cariño.
Ahora pienso, si Stoker, Lewis Carroll, Arthur Conan Doyle o sobre todo H.G. Wells leyesen la trilogía de Palma, ¿qué les parecería? ¿Les gustaría? ¿Se enfadarían? XDDD
También me acabo de dar cuenta que no he leido nada ni de Wells ni de Conan Doyle. Muy mal.... habrá que ir pensando en ponerle remedio :))

Chaos is inevitable- and absolutely brilliant. I cannot think of books I enjoyed more and Palma's Victorian trilogy will forever have a revered spot on my shelf. Naturally, as with most series, I worried that each new book would suffer in comparison to the one before but here this was simply not the case. Now that it has concluded in a spectacular fashion I can more ardently harass my friends who have not yet discovered it to begin reading.
While for me Map of Time started like a shot, this one is more like Map of the Sky in that it begins with a slow building of the world(s) but soon picks up pace and does not stop barreling ahead until it ends in what to me felt like the perfect combination of drama and sentiment that left me feeling uplifted by the sheer power of the human mind's capacity for creativity. I actually preferred it to Map of the Sky, though that may be because I am less interested in War of the Worlds than I am The Invisible Man, but that is a quibble and not a comment on the meticulously crafted, and often surprising, plot.
I will miss Wells, Jane, Dodgson, Murray, etc in all of their various incarnations and am sad to see this series conclude. I must confess that I may even have developed a bit of a crush on a certain narcoleptic Inspector with a prosthetic hand...

Hacía tiempo que no tenía una lectura con tantos altibajos. Al comenzar el prólogo pensé que la historia prometía. Los primeros capítulos me iban gustando pero conforme leía iba perdiendo el hilo de la historia. Una trama confusa que aunque sabía que al final se aclararía todo estaba haciendo que perdiera el interés por seguir leyendo. Después de un par de días sin leer, decidí que no podía dejar el final de la trilogía así, que con lo que me gustaron los dos libros anteriores este no iba a ser menos. De manera que le di otra oportunidad y aunque me he liado un poco con los mundos paralelos, los universos infinitos, las coordenadas maelstrom, y demás rarezas, en el último tercio del libro han empezado a encajar las piezas, ha aumentado la acción y por fin he podido disfrutar del libro! Tal y como yo esperaba.

Qué pena que no haya sido más parecido a lo que durante tanto tiempo había esperado. Quizás han sido mis expectativas (desorbitadas), pero me ha faltado el encanto, la magia y la imaginación de las anteriores entregas. La trama me ha parecido demasiado caótica, y no he entrado en la novela en ningún momento.
Siempre me quedará "El mapa del tiempo", que recordaré como uno de los libros más imaginativos que he leído y con una historia de amor a través del tiempo preciosa.

The final volume of the Victorian Trilogy (Trilogía Victoriana) in the original Spanish is a fine conclusion. While it does tie in the events from the first two books, this is largely its own story. HG Wells returns as the main protagonist along with his wife Jane but we are also treated to some really cool new characters including Arthur Conan Doyle, Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (Lewis Carroll) and the Invisible Man (although it's not Griffin from HG Well's novel). A nice addition is a Scotland Yard detective who turns out to be extremely important to the plot.
This book, like the others, starts slow and methodical with a lot of time spent on the characters and their daily lives. That's fine with me because I enjoy the prose so much, a testament to the English translator, Nick Caistor, as well as the author. The pace quickens as the tale unfolds and soon we begin to understand the true scope of what is transpiring, including what is causing the entire multiverse to collapse. Can't get much bigger than that, when it comes to high stakes.
I really enjoyed this trilogy. It may not suit everybody's tastes due to some rather complex time-jumping, paradoxes, and multiple character viewpoints but I felt comfortable with the entire package. It's one of those that I kept wanting to read one more section before bedtime, and then doing just that.
I shall miss these characters, which is among the highest types of praise I can offer a novel or a series such as this one.

Fantástico. Félix J. Palma ya logró conquistarme con El mapa del cielo, pero con El mapa del caos demuestra que es sin duda alguna de lo mejorcito que se puede encontrar en la literatura contemporánea española. Quizás me gustó más el segundo libro de la trilogía (aunque admito que aún no he leído el primero, pues se pueden leer de forma independiente), pero he disfrutado de este igualmente. Algunas veces os he hablado sobre estos libros aquí en el blog o en el canal, sí, digo libros porque El mapa del caos forma parte de la llamada "Trilogía victoriana". Pero ojo, no os asustéis, antes de desmoralizaros al enfrentaros a otra saga o trilogía, leed lo que tengo que contaros a continuación. Ya lo sabréis algunos de vosotros porque, como os acabo de decir, lo he comentado a veces, pero esta vez es la oficial ya que esta es la reseña y no un simple comentario de pasada.
La trilogía está formada por los siguientes títulos: El mapa del tiempo, El mapa del cielo y El mapa del caos éste que os acabo de decir es el orden de publicación. Ahora bien, por recomendación expresa del autor, y de una humilde servidora que así lo corrobora, se recomienda leer los libros en este orden: El mapa del cielo, El mapa del tiempo y El mapa del caos, es decir: 2º, 1º y 3º.
¿Cómo sé esto y por qué lo digo? Pues lo sé porque acudí, hace tiempo, a una firma del autor y lo comentó allí. Y yo, después al leerlo en el orden recomendado por azares del destino, debo decir que es lo correcto y lo más adecuado porque te autoespoileas menos y el conjunto de la historia te sorprende muchísimo más.
De todos modos, fijaos si es grandiosa la obra de Félix que se pueden leer en cualquier orden, y según sea éste, viviréis la historia de una manera o de otra. Y también, para más inri, se pueden leer de forma independiente. ¿No es fabuloso??
Desde luego yo no tengo palabras para describir esta paradoja literaria y esta maravilla de las letras. El autor ha conseguido crear un "Todo" prodigioso y mágico.
Por supuesto, os recomiendo leer los tres sin lugar a dudas y en el orden recomendado; una vez leídos todo cobrará un sentido descomunal y sorprendente y podréis entender bien de qué hablo.
Por otro lado, comentaros que las tres obras están inspiradas en los grandes clásicos de H. G. Wells: La máquina del tiempo, La guerra de los mundos y El hombre invisible.
¿Qué podemos encontrar en tan singulares obras? Os preguntaréis... Pues de todo... sí, de todo: aventura, misterio, toques de terror, amor, ciencia ficción, fantasía, personajes arrebatadores y perfectísimamente perfilados, ambientaciones perfectamente trabajadas, pasando desde los escenarios más brutales hasta los más sublimes.
Unas vueltas de tuerca y giros inesperados, en las tramas, que rozan lo mágico.
En definitiva, una aventura que no tengo palabras para describir.
Como veis, me estoy dejando llevar y acabo de darme cuenta que más que reseñar El mapa del caos os estoy hablando de la trilogía al completo... ha sido sin darme cuenta pero es que yo que he leído los tres los concibo como un todo grandioso, así que permitidme que termine la reseña abarcando todos ya que así la he comenzado sin querer.
Os voy a comentar la puntuación que le daría a los libros en concreto: a "El mapa del tiempo" le daría un nueve, a "El mapa del cielo" un diez y al último un ocho. Si, es el que menos me ha gustado; une todo a la perfección y el universo creado cobra más sentido aun, si cabe, gracias a él, pero creo que hacia el final de la obra el autor quiso rizar demasiado el rizo y resultó alguna parte un tanto rockambolesca dentro de toda la fantasía que estábamos digiriendo. La parte de Lewis Carroll me gustó, pero creo que ya era abusar mucho y forzar la maquinaria, quizás hubiera sobrado o hubiera debido ser más breve.
No obstante, como podéis ver, son unos de mis libros favoritos de todos los tiempos y no de jo de recomendarlos, tenéis que darles una oportunidad, al menos a uno de ellos. ¡¡No os arrepentiréis!!!

La parte de Lewis Carroll me gustó, pero creo que ya era abusar mucho y forzar la maquinaria, quizás hubiera sobrado o hubiera debido ser más breve.
No obstante, como podéis ver, son unos de mis libros favoritos de todos los tiempos y no de jo de recomendarlos, tenéis que darles una oportunidad, al menos a uno de ellos. ¡¡No os arrepentiréis!!!

Mucha esperaba de ella, y me lo concedió hasta la mitad. Un exceso de personajes famosos, principalmente escritores, en los que dedica capítulos para contar su vida (medio real, medio fantástica para cuadrarlos en la historia, aunque realmente no influyen en ella).
Un relleno tan grande como el miedo de los editores en no meter tijera. Nos cuenta un batiburrillo de historias, en que la más relevante es contactar con los muertos. Para finalizar todo con una paranoia, fumada, locura, etcétera. Que resumen lo perdido que acabo el autor.
La historia es realmente buena (los 3 libros) tiene momentos de genialidad al relacionar cosas de otros libro de la trilogía y de los autores que protagonizan. Y otros que son insulsos que están fuera de lugar, los que me da a pensar que los tenía por ahí escritos, o por lo menos la idea. Y pensó: “¡Qué coño! Que es el último joder, ahí van”.

I really love this series, so it pains me to give the finale three stars. Unfortunately, while it still had its enjoyable elements, I found it had too much of everything in an attempt to tie together the first two books in an overarching plot that makes sense.
I guess technically all the plot threads are tied together, but in a wholly unsatisfying way. And there was so much in the second act that could have been cut out entirely. How many versions of H.G. Wells character building do we need?
One good thing: Jane Wells. What an awesome lady.

Maravilloso, excitante, decimonónico, emocionante, intrigante.. Qué decir del libro que significa el final de una trilogía tan apasionante!
Son casi 700 páginas de aventuras sin un momento para el relax, y aunque parezcan muchas, es tan maravilloso que se quedan en pocas: quiero más!!!
Me encanta el poder encontrarme con un libro, de un escritor español, de temática tan decimónica y steampunk y que sea una autentica maravilla.
Imprescindible en cualquier casa, ya estáis tardando en leerlo!!

I think this book will offer more enjoyment in memory than it did in the actual reading. Ironically, this third novel in the Map of Time series would have been better if created as a standalone. It’s just too overdone.
Of the trilogy as a whole, I have to say this book was the weakest, in my opinion. It feels very removed from the other two instalments, in style, content and language. Palma went to incredible lengths to include and give conclusion to every little element from both previous books, and completely new origin to the collective story, while also giving a whole new narrative in this instalment. In doing so, he drifted too far into a more modern mentality of science fiction and lost a lot of the simplicity and naivete of the nineteen century prose he employed so well in books one and two. This took me out of the story for too often, which was frustrating, to say the least.
In the previous books, the author included some delightful snippets from movies, things you’d only recognise if you’re a fan of the movies in question. These little delights injected a fantastic sense of humour, giving me cause to laugh out loud. Unfortunately, in this offering, the movie ‘tribute’ is irritatingly over used and about as subtle as a lead pipe.
I feel like I’ve been incredibly hard and nitpicky with this series and I can’t shake the feeling that if I were to read these books again, now knowing the weaknesses that troubled me ahead of time, I’d enjoy them a hell of a lot more.

Aunque el autor consigue cerrar todo muy ien, la verdad es que este libro se me ha hecho muy lioso y, a veces, incluso tedioso. Así que aunque me alegra haberme leído esta trilogía, a este último libro no puedo darle sinceramente más de tres estrellas.

Den Dritten Teil und gleichzeitig Abschluss der "Landkarten-Trilogie" von Felix J. Palma habe ich sehnlichst erwartet. Wie schon bei seinen ersten beiden Landkarten Romanen, finden wir zwischen den Buchdeckeln einen lukullischen Festschmaus für Leser, die gerne zwischen Phantasie und Realität hin und her pendeln und sich dabei nie sicher sein können, ob das was nun gerade erzählt wird echt ist oder ob wir in phantastische (Parallel-) Welten abdriften. Der Autor zieht einem immer wieder den sicher geglaubten Boden unter den Füssen weg und man rätselt, ob wir ihm in diesem Moment auf den Leim gehen. Ein Schelm, ein Taschenspieler, ein Schlaumeier der saumässig gerne mit den Lesern spielt und ich meinerseits mag dieses literarische Vexierspiel mit dem er meinen Verstand auf die Probe stellt. Wie immer kommt noch das Kuriosum der Zeit hinzu von der Albert Einstein einmal sagte: Die Unterscheidung zwischen Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft ist ein Illusion, die sich allerdings hartnäckig hält. Illusion ist so ein Wort, dass wie die Faust aufs Auge zu diesem Roman passt.
Palmas detailverliebter Erzählstil ist unverwechselbar und ich fühle mich von der ersten Seite an pudelwohl in der verzwickten Geschichte. Leider liegen zwischen den drei Teilen ein paar Jahre und ich kann mich nicht an alle Einzelheiten erinnern aber das stört mich nicht im geringsten und ich lasse mich vom Autoren bereitwillig an die Leine nehmen und bin neugierig was für wundersame Dinge er mir zeigen will. Einmal mehr ist auch dieses Buch eine Hommage an grosse Literaten der Vergangenheit. Neben H.G. Wells sind diesmal als bekannteste Schriftsteller Arthur Conan Doyle und Lewis Carroll dabei. Es werden gleich mehrere rote Handlungsfäden gesponnen von denen einige für viele Seiten in einem Wollmausknäuel ruhend brach liegen bis sie wieder aufgenommen und entwirrt werden damit die lange Lesereise mit den einzigartigen Abenteuern ein würdiges Ende findet.
Das Manko dieses Buches liegt in seiner Länge. Auch wenn ich Palmas ausschweifende Erzählerei sehr mag, so sind 860 Seiten diesmal eindeutig zu viel des Guten. Für meinen Geschmack hätte eine Kürzung um rund 200 Seiten dem Roman gut getan. Dies ist auch der Grund, weshalb ich einen Stern in der Wertung abziehe.
Eines braucht man sich nicht vorzumachen: Wer mit dem ersten und zweiten Teil dieser Trilogie nicht recht warm wurde, wird auch beim Abschlussband nicht glücklich werden. Ich verstehe jede(n) Leser/-in der/die diese Bücher nicht mag. Sie sind speziell. Aber mir gefallen sie ungemein und besonders das zweite Buch fand ich das Beste der Dreien. Und nun wohlan geschätzte Leser! Stürzt auch mutig auf die Geschichte vom Chaos wo Verstandesungeheuer in einem Multiversum ihr Unwesen treiben und lasst euch führen und verführen, aber nicht auf einen Irrweg führen, und lest von Dingen, die einfach passieren, weil sie passieren können!

Tiene pinta de enlazar muy bien la historia si la sigues desde el principio, no como yoñ que he empezado por el final (si, es el tercero y último de una trilogía 🤡)

Aún así, me ha gustado. Aunque todo el tiempo he tenido la sensación de que faltaba algo (tal vez tener el enganche inicial a la historia 🙈)

Me embarqué en esta aventura sabiendo que cualquier cosa era posible. Pero no esperaba un viaje tan lleno de sobresaltos.
“El mapa del caos”, de Félix J. Palma, es el último libro de la trilogía victoriana. En esta ocasión, el hombre invisible creado por H.G. Wells será uno de los protagonistas de esta historia que nos hace viajar desde sesiones espíritas a universos paralelos. En este viaje nos encontraremos no solo con viejos conocidos, sino con nuevos aliados como Lewis Carroll o Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
Las dos novelas anteriores me gustaron muchísimo, pero he de reconocer que esta es mi favorita. Desvela el origen de los misteriosos desmayos del agente Clayton, nos cuenta qué pasó tras aquel espectáculo sin parangón en los campos de Horsell y nos muestra que cada decisión que tomamos cambia la vida de nuestros alter egos en los diferentes universos que componen el multiverso.
H.G. Wells es una vez más el protagonista de la novela, pero en esta ocasión tiene grandes compañeros de aventura que por momentos llegan a eclipsarle. El primero de ellos es Murray, con el que ha llegado a trabar una gran amistad después de muchos enfrentamientos y que no dejará de volver loco a Wells con sus disparatadas ideas.
El segundo es Sir Arthur Conan Doyle; hombre de carácter, curtido en varias guerras y empeñado en demostrar que es posible comunicarse con los espíritus si se encuentra el médium adecuado. Sus debates con Murray acerca de la posible resurrección de Sherlock Holmes son una delicia.
La novela se desarrolla en tantos escenarios y con tantos actores que llegas a preguntarte si al final todas las piezas encajarán. Y sí, el autor, cual Houdini, consigue que todo cuadre a la perfección y para colmo, escribe uno de los mejores finales literarios que he leído en mi vida.
Un libro para soñar, para escapar de la triste realidad que vivimos hoy en día y para volver a dejar que sea la imaginación y no la rutina la que guie nuestras vidas.

El más decepcionante de una trilogía que empezó de manera magistral para terminar de manera repetitiva y caótica.
Esperaba muchísimo más, demasiado largo, demasiado auto complaciente.
Tiene todos los ingredientes para ser una gran historia, pero el primer tercio es tedioso y el el final caótico y apresurado.
Uno de los libros que más espera de los últimos años y ha sido una decepción.

waaaaay too much going on, and hard to make the connections... i tire of authors using historical authors to act in their novels... i expected a better finish to this trilogy and was disappointed, the first two books were fantastic and fun... this book was pnderous and meandering and seemed to simply 'finish the trilogy' for the publishers...

The same criticism applies to this volume as much as it does the previous two books of the series: Palma's plot work is amazing, but his pacing is erratic, his character building, especially with women, is incredibly weak, and overall his writing just doesn't stand up to the story.
It's difficult to say with translated works whether Palma's writing has increased in quality or if Nick Caistor has just gotten better at translating. Regardless, The Map of Chaos read much better than its predecessors, but it was still over written and full of unnecessary tangents. For example, Conan Doyle is introduced and I skimmed about four pages on his background as I already came in knowing a fair amount about him.
But this was by far the most inventive and tied in to elements of the two previous novels in clever ways I never expected! I did have on criticism of the multiverse though -

Третья часть приключений Герберта Уэллса, по идее, должна поставить все на свои места, расставить фигуры на доске и объяснить, ху из ху. Не то, чтобы без этой информации предыдущие части трилогии были неполными, но всегда есть место для трактовки уже известных событий с другой, еще неизвестной стороны.
Так вот, для того, чтобы уложить всю схему приключений Уэллса, нужно включить все наличествующие пространственное мышление и вспомнить некоторые детали из предыдущих частей, тогда казавшиеся неважными. И при том, успевать следить за головокружительными поворотами сюжета, держать в памяти многочисленных героев и их вариации, а еще считывать тонкую игру автора с читателем. И нельзя сказать, что все усилия чего-то стоят.
Слов слишком много, действий слишком много, а в цельную картинку все никак не хотелось собираться. Это действительно книга Хаоса - но со знаком минус. Она сделана по тем же самым лекалам, что и предыдущие части, в ней есть все составляющие хорошего романа, но она не цепляет.
В бесчисленных мирах Гиллиаму Мюррею удалось заставить рассмеяться Эмму Харлоу, что, в общем-то, не является достижением. Но всеми своими поступками он доказал, что стоит ее, что он достоин ее смеха. У Феликса Пальмы получилось заинтересовать читателя, но вот удержать читательский интерес оказалось гораздо сложнее.
