Product Description Final part of the Ragdolls & Riches Series. After learning of the death of the only woman he'd ever loved, at the hands of his own mother Finn is inconsolable. Convincing himself that the connection that he and Cassidy share is so deep that he can still hear her, still feel her, he genuinely believes she's still alive. Will he eventually learn to let go?
I enjoyed both of these books and could have easily read a 3rd and a 4th if there had been more books. I liked the way that the books kept you guessing with some things and then other things bam! you just didnt see them coming. Loveable characters and nicely written
Book one of this duo left me in absolute pandemonium. What a cliffhanger!!!
It pains me to write this review because I honestly love this author's writing and the other books I've read by her.
Book two starts off fairly strong.
Finn has to make a decision between risking people thinking he's completely went CooKoo for Cocoa Puffs in order to follow what his gut is telling him about Cassidy being alive -or- chalking these weird feelings up to denial and grief and try to move forward without Cassidy.
Then...
Fizzling Plot Problems
After a couple of chapters, the plot kinda fizzles for me & the characters barely remain recognizable from their book one selves.
Why?
1) There's not a lot of mystery, suspense, or anticipation to the plot
• Past whether Cass is actually dead or not, there's not much left to guess about or anticipate coming. A couple of players for the nice guy's team, end up on the opposing team, but it's not a shocker.
2) A lot of the character actions feel forced & not natural to the character personalities we were introduced to in book one.
• A guy with Finn's money, resources, and alpha attitude wouldn't a) sit idle to wait and see if things work out once he knows for certain what's what. b) send someone else he cares about (housekeeper) into harms way. His actions just weren't congruent with what/who his character has already been depicted as being. This isn't the same guy that was alpha enough to sling Cass across his shoulder or demanded she stay with him. This wasn't the guy proactive enough to put a baby monitor under her bed. Etc...
• Mama Dearest hasn't been afraid to get her hands dirty in the least so why would the reasoning behind the main plot here be because "she doesn't want another dead body on her hands?" It's difficult to buy from a lady brazen enough to attack her son in his home and beat his girlfriend to a pulp twice! I'd have bought a conspiracy to manipulate her captive to fall in love with someone else to hurt her son, brainwash the captive, turn the captive into an assassin for the revenge scheme... Anything, something? It's also not buyable that a conspiracy this big and with this much effort being exerted ( ie to basically take over some medical facility, buy the employees, and be present there herself pretending to be on staff) would have an endgame of letting the captive go if she doesn't remember or killing if she does. Too much effort and complexity for that kind of endgame.
• The captive makes no attempt to escape?
3) Things just kinda work out in the end without a lot of fuss.
• All the bad guys die without any of the good guys lifting a finger.
4) Paranormal inklings throughout the book, but nothing is explained, detailed, followed up on, or cemented into the plot. I basically felt like the author really wanted to try her hand at a paranormal subplot, but got cold feet and didn't commit to it or didn't really know what to do with it in the long run. Paranormal NEVER works without a full on commitment. Either leave it out, or bring it on full force.
• A mental sixth sense/ telepathy of sorts, but it's just kind if there without rhyme or reason.
• Ghostly intervention & advice?!? I'm baffled! Details are needed.
5) Characters inserted without a real purpose or role to play.
• The dirty cop? Eh, he just didn't serve a purpose for the plot!
• The janitor and his mom? Again, aside from being someone for the captive to dialogue with, what purpose did he serve in the plot? Was he instrumental in her discovering the truth? No. Was he instrumental in her escape? No. Was he a love triangle? No.
6) Too many bad guys with a guilty conscious and/or change of heart. One is believable... Five is not so believable.
7) It's extreme to keep your MCs apart for 95% of the book.
Bottom Line
The writing style is still good, with limited fluff.
BUT, the plot itself just lacks momentum and the ebbs and flow it should have to keep the story interesting and the reader engaged. Flat.. That's what I'd call this storyline.
Books don't always need shit exploding and characters going Rambo or Single White Female, but it also can't be all lull and nothing else till the HEA suddenly materializes on it's own.
The characters got lost in the lull and became unrecognizable from book one.
Book one very good. Book two not so much.
Maybe a revamp is in order to bring this book up to par with it's predecessor.
I say again, this is a talented author and she has a bright future in writing. These are her first and second books, and were clearly learning experiences for her because she absolutely rocked her most recent books, "That Callen Boy" and "Those Callen Boys."
I came to the end of this book and genuinely felt sad that id never be reading about these characters again. I really like this authors style of writing and i love how she cam make me laugh and also make me cry in her books. The characters are all loveable and the story keeps me on the edge of my seat. I think it was really well written and i cant wait to read any future titles by this auhor
I liked this but not as much as the first book. I was still very much hooked all the way through and still had some serious FINNIDY love going on I just favoured the first book that's all. Very impressed though.
I can't tell you how much i enjoyed these books. There was a little bit of everything in there, witt, suspense, tears, laughter. Brilliant. I look forward to future books
