This is the second book in the Gatekeepers series. In the first book, Matthew has an interesting couple of weeks. In the end, he finds out that he is one of the 5 children that are essentially guardians of the gates. Evil people are trying to let the "old ones" out of their gates, and Matt managed to stop them from opening Raven's Gate in the first book. The old ones are basically the great monsters and demons that people managed to lock up thousands of years ago, but now they are getting closer and closer to being released again.
In this book, Matt is ready to setting into the semblance of a normal life, when the Nexus, the group fighting against the old ones, tells him that isn't an option. They need his help because somebody has found an ancient diary that contains crucial information for both sides, and they need to get it first. The person that found it is not involved with either side, but after reading the diary, wants to meet one of the five before giving it to them. Matt goes to meet Morton, but while he is there, Morton gets killed and the diary gets stolen. Presumably by the other side. They have a lead, that the person is located somewhere in South America, and they need to follow it to get the diary back.
They are almost positive that the person that took it is Diego Salamanda, the most powerful man in all of South America. He has control over virtually everything, from the businesses to police. Matt and his guardian, Richard, go on a quest to impossibly steal back the diary from Salamanda. They get fake passports, and travel in disguise. When they get there, Richard is kidnapped, and Matt just barely escaped being kidnapped also.
Alone and illegally in the country, he sleeps on the streets. He has no idea where to go, and no leads as to where he is. While there, he meets a homeless boy, Pedro. He takes him to his "home" and tries to help him.
As Pedro and Matt work together more and more, Matt realizes that he has found another of the five. With two of them together, their powers are even stronger, and they realize that they might just have a chance to gain back the diary, and stop the gates from opening.
I really liked this book, it had lots of twists and turns, and a really developed plot, though it might not seem like it from this review. Since it is a series, lots happened in the first book, and I'm sure much more will happen in the next books. I didn't really like how the book ended in a weird place, even though it is a series, they could have ended it better.
I recommend this book for teens and preteens who enjoy fantasy.
