Dollycas’s Thoughts

Dr. Gwen Griffith went to college in Dillynaidd, Wales, and now, with her job eliminated at a Texas newspaper, she is ready to reunite with her best friend, Carolyn Sparks, to become the head of the journalism department at her alma mater. Carolyn happens to be the dean of the university and thinks Gwen is a perfect fit. Not all the tenured professors are happy about Gwen being their boss. Dr. Alice Rice thought she was more suitable for the position, but Gwen hopes to win her over.

After their interaction at a faculty party to introduce Gwen to the other members of the department, she was surprised when Dr. Rice showed up at her new home. She was shocked when the woman drops dead almost as soon as she opened the door. Barely knowing the woman didn’t stop police detective Gareth Jones from suspecting Gwen of murder. Now, she is going to use all of her reporter skills to investigate the murder herself. The killer appears to have Gwen in their sights, so she may need some help from her friends to survive long enough to see the curious case solved.

Ms. Connelly sets this new series off to an excellent start by introducing likable characters and giving them wonderful depth right off the bat while leaving plenty of room for growth. Gwen is super friendly and embraces her new situation with a positive attitude. Nervous, never having taught before, she has great ideas and is surrounded by very capable people. Her teaching assistant, Ellis, is experienced, knowledgeable, and willing to be her guide to the town and the college. Best friend Carolyn and her husband, Henry, are there to support and protect her when necessary.

The little town of Dillynaidd was an idyllic place in its winter glory, with the small shops, bakery, and restaurant. With a housing shortage, many of the single faculty live in a unique building downtown with some amazing benefits. It may get to be too much someday, living so closely with those you work with, but in this story, it was an advantage. The college and the dean’s home aren’t too far away. I was easily able to visualize everything thanks to the author’s descriptive details.

The victim, Dr. Alice Rice, made her share of enemies. The woman was stuck in the past and did not even attempt to use the technology available. She was a bitter woman whom everyone, including the students, tried to avoid. Ellis was familiar with her attitude and tactics, and quickly became Watson to Gwen’s Sherlock. He was so nice and willing to take Gwen anywhere she needed to follow clues and get answers. I liked it when Detective Gareth Jones finally realized that Gwen was a reliable source with keen instincts. The author tries to draw readers aside with some well-placed red herrings and twists. I fell for a couple, but came back to the right conclusion before all was revealed, although the motive was unexpected.

The Curious Case of the Poisoned Professor checks all the cozy mystery boxes, with a terrific protagonist surrounded by an interesting group of supporting characters, the requisite small town, lighthearted humor, a fun theme, and a puzzling mystery to solve. Gwen’s time in Wales got off to a very bumpy start, but things were looking up in the end. I am eager to see what Ms. Connelly has planned for her and her new Dillynaidd friends next. Bring on Book 2!

The story takes off from the beginning and keeps on going. Dr. Gwen Griffith having been forced into earlier retirement from her newspaper job, is embarking on a new career as chair of a new journalism curriculum at the behest of college friend who is now the head of the university where they'd met as undergrads decades ago. For most, moving to a new country and starting a new job would be enough but within the first 24 hours, things just pile on for Gwen. She meets her rival for her job and then said rival drops dead on her - literally.

Of course, this means that Gwen must investigate. She's accompanied by her assistant, Ellis. I chuckled at his description as a Black Daniel Radcliffe from the Harry Potter films, round glasses included. From the beginning, they were a great team. He is not only a great assistant but has the makings of a great reporter. The mentor/mentee, boss/assistant, and friendly manner in which Gwen and Ellis worked together was very well done.

In the midst of the murder and settling in, friendships are forged and the stage is set for future adventures in the university town of Dillynaidd. The character development was well done and appropriate for a person moving and meeting people for the first time. We have hints to the layers of Dr. Gwen Griffith and the layers of Ellis. I like how the character Gwen refers to having found "my people" referring to how her and Ellis have those who care about them given they do not have any family left.

This is a cozy mystery so there is some of the usual tropes with some twists which I think are appropriate given the setting and the main character's age. Said a bit differently, more thought into actions and the consequences from them both for herself and her assistant, Ellis.

One thing I would have liked to have more of is the Welsh language interspersed into the dialogue as well as Welsh culture. There is some in the first few chapters then it goes away. Also, a subplot seemed to disappear without resolution. Not a huge deal but something that stuck with me causing me to wonder if purposely done, hint for a future story.

Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable story that I can't wait to continue in another book or two or more.

Thank you #NetGalley and #CrookedLaneBooks for the opportunity the early read and chance to share my thoughts.

Happy Reading!

Received an ARC from a friend and was hooked by the first chapter. The storyline flowed smoothly with interesting characters and the perfect setting. A few plot twists and a possible romance will keep me anxiously waiting for the next installment.

I have enjoyed this author's series featuring the American doctor in Scotland but this new series fell short for me. The Welsh setting is interesting and well done, and as you would expect there is a supporting cast of co-workers and village neighbors.

Former investigative reporter Dr. Gwen Griffith has now moved into the academic world, after experiencing the latest crushing layoffs in journalism. She did some undergrad work in Wales and her best friend is a dean at a small college there and offered her a job as head of the journalism department. Gwen is more than willing to give up big city life in Dallas and make the move.

Her initial meeting with her college peers goes well except for one individual who is unpleasant and mean-spirited. No one has a good word to say -- so guess who ends up being the murder victim? And she dies on Gwen's doorstep.

Gwen, given the circumstances and her former career, feels obliged to investigate, with the assistance of her terrific college assistant and a hunky neighbor from her department. The investigating police officer is also around, quite handsome and quite insistent Gwen shouldn't interfere.

My issues: Gwen has very hazy ethical standards, in my opinion. She "borrows" something from the crime scene, breaks into the victim's apartment, and secretly photographs case documents while the detective is out of the room -- and she sometimes does these things with her staff and even a student present.

The other thing that bugged me was this author's style. She is reluctant to use "said" and so the characters often "laughed" instead -- like 16 times in the first chapter. Hopefully they will fix that before publication. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Lucy Connolly’s books are like a really good bar of chocolate - so yummy as you devour them. This series debut finds former journalist Dr. Gwen Griffiths returning to Wales, where she attended university, to become a professor at the place where she went to school. She’s suffered the layoffs and contractions suffered by newspapers everywhere, and she certainly seems to have found a cozy berth at her new place. Her old friend Carolyn is now the dean, and she’s recruited Gwen to run the journalism department with a real world edge.

Gwen’s job as described sounds pretty good, but the living and working conditions sound even better, almost fairy tale like (told you about the bar of chocolate). Not only will Gwen live rent free in a gorgeous apartment in a building filled with fellow professors, she has a student assistant to drive her around, as well as a building concierge. She doesn’t even have to take out her trash, she juts put it outside her door. When she gets to her office, it’s just as dreamy – its huge and beautiful, and the staff secretary makes sure there are delicious tea and biscuits to be had all day long. I was ready to go back to school myself.

However, all is not perfect in this Welsh Eden. The night Gwen arrives her old buddy gives her a welcome party with most of the faculty in attendance, and as she’s introduced around, she notices a definite hostility on the part of another professor, Dr. Alice Rice. She also hears various murmurs about Alice’s unpleasant personality, confirmed by her rude behavior at dinner. It seems Alice had wanted Gwen’s job. Gwen, a hard-nosed journalist, is able to roll with these punches and heads home to collapse after an exhausting day.

As she’s sharing a post party drink with one of her neighbors, another professor, someone rings her doorbell, and she opens the door to discover Alice, who collapses in her arms and dies, only managing to utter the word “poison” before she does so. This unsettles even Gwen, who does her best with CPR, though to no avail.

As the shock waves reverberate through the department Gwen finds her new colleagues welcoming, and her assistant, a young student named Ellis, is not only eager to show her around, but he’s writing about Alice’s death for the school paper. Gwen takes the budding journalist under her wing, helping him with interview questions, and accompanying him on a trip to a local newspaper office where they search the back issues for clues.

This is a classic set up – the most reviled person on the page is the one taken off of it, and the almost pleasant investigation that follows, which includes a bit of gentle danger for Gwen, is smart enough and so, so much fun to read. The resolution is golden age worthy, and just as yummy as the rest of the read. You might figure out whodunnit but you’ll enjoy getting to the solution anyway. Sign me up for a homemade biscuit, Welsh style.

If you are a fan of Lucy Connelly’s character, Doc Emilia, from the Scottish Isle Mystery series then you are sure to enjoy “meeting” Professor Gwen Griffith. This is a great start to a new series that is situated in the small town of Dillynaidd, Wales in the United Kingdom. It is just the sort of cozy town for a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, who has been downsized from a Dallas newspaper, to get a fresh start. Not to mention that it is the very college she attended as an undergrad. Longtime friend and current dean, Carolyn Sharp, hires Gwen to be the chairman of the journalism department. Gwen is in town less than 12 hours, when death shows up on her doorstep, literally. The rather difficult and surly Dr. Rice breathes her last breath and collapses. You can take the investigative journalist out of the field, but you can't get her to quell her curiosity. Honestly, when has a sleuth, amateur or otherwise ever walked away from a victim who died in their arms?

The plot thickens as more suspects are revealed and threatening messages turn up. It is quite possible that Gwen is the only one who had no cause to dislike Dr. Rice in spite of the cold and bitter greeting she received upon their introduction. It was easy to get caught up in the story due to the quick pace and ample clues. There were some well-placed red herrings as well that made me question my armchair sleuthing abilities. The cast of support characters is fun and diverse with a 6-foot tall ‘Watson’ named Ellis who is Gwen’s partner in sleuthing as well as being her able-bodied assistant. There are also some gal pals, a mother hen bestie, an attractive and helpful coworker, and even a detective who gives credence to Gwen’s investigative abilities. This crowd looks to be a solid group of friends for Gwen who can assist in future stories. One of the best parts of this foreign based series is the small shire feeling and the fun way the locals interact with each other and Gwen. The fact that everyone knows everyone else and that the Dillynaidd grapevine is faster than the fiber cable is spot on. I was especially happy to see that while there are romantic possibilities, there doesn’t seem to be any geometric hindrances. I am not a fan of romantic triangles because someone always gets hurt and I like my cozies to give happy endings to as many people as possible.

The plot thickens as more suspects are revealed and threatening messages turn up. It is quite possible that Gwen is the only one who had no cause to dislike Dr. Rice in spite of the cold and bitter greeting she received upon their introduction. The story was both entertaining and engaging, not to mention that it had me craving Welsh cakes enough to go looking for a recipe.

I recently listened to “An Irish Bookshop Murder” by Lucy Connelly and enjoyed the cozy murder mystery with a bit of ridiculous thrown in. So when I was given the chance to read this arc, I was happy to be entertained by another quick murder mystery read.

“The Curious Case of the Poisoned Professor” was similar to Connelly’s other book I read in that both FMCs recently relocated across the world and are trying to find a new home and life for themselves. Very quickly, a murder happens and they get tangled up in finding out who did it. And maybe they are going a bit too far in how they solve the case, but it’s all for the truth.

I enjoyed the characters of this book and would definitely be interested to read the next installments as all the characters become more developed as their stories continue. It also wasn’t a super obvious or cliche murderer, so although I did figure out who did it, I wasn’t annoyed when I found out because it was still different enough and interesting to see how the clues were put together.

One thing that I didn’t really like in this book though was the fact that Gwen, the FMC, very quickly trusted a near stranger to help her do something illegal. I always find it a bit silly in books or movies like this story where a civilian becomes an amateur detective that is somehow better than the entire police force and yet thinks they can do the job of the police such as interview all the suspects or enter crime scenes, etc. But I will let it go because that is the style of book this is. However, it makes a lot more sense if the main character does something shady with their best friend or a family member who knows what they are like. For a near stranger to be like sure, let me do this illegal thing with you no problem was a bit too much of a stretch for me.

Overall though, I still enjoyed the main character Gwen and am interested to see where her story leads. I’ll also be picking up more of the Mercy McCarthy series from Connelly that I first read.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing a free ARC in exchange for a review.

A charming and promising start to a new cozy mystery series

This is the first installment in ‘A Welsh Village Mystery,’ a contemporary cozy mystery told in first person from the perspective of Dr. Gwen Griffith. The story is set in the small, charming university town of Dillynaidd, Wales, which provides a cozy backdrop for the mystery.

Gwen returns to Dillynaidd twenty plus years after earning her undergraduate degree there. Since then, she has built an impressive career in the U.S., culminating in her role as managing editor of a major Dallas newspaper. When downsizing forces her into early retirement, Gwen finds herself adrift and unsure of her next step. At the encouragement of her best friend Carolyn, now the university’s dean, she applies for and accepts the position of Chairman of Journalism at her alma mater which is an opportunity that brings another major life transition.

On Gwen’s very first night back in town, she has a tense encounter with the university’s most disliked professor, Dr. Rice. Mere hours later, Dr. Rice is dead, and Gwen quickly becomes a suspect. Determined to clear her name, she inserts herself into the investigation alongside her assistant Ellis, much to the irritation of standoffish Detective Gareth Jones.

This book delivers all the familiar and comforting cozy mystery tropes: an amateur sleuth, a small-town setting, an unlikable victim, a cast of quirky characters, and a reluctant detective. The found family element is especially well done and adds emotional warmth to the story. While the mystery itself is fairly easy to solve due to Lucy Connelly leaving plenty of small clues along the way, the journey is enjoyable and engaging.

Overall, this is a strong and satisfying debut for a new cozy mystery series, and I will definitely be continuing with future installments.

Thank you to NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for the free digital advance reader copy. All opinions are my own and based on the ARC, which may differ from the final published version.

I have been reading and loving Lucy Connelly's Scottish Isle cozy mystery series. While I was purusing NetGalley one day, I saw the first in a new series by Lucy Connelly and knew I needed to read it.

The Curious Case of the Poisoned Professor, is the first in the Welsh Village Mystery series. American journalist, Dr. Gwen Griffith is laid off from her job as managing editor at a Texas newspaper. She is offered a job as the head of the journalism department at Dillynaidd, Wales. A place where she went to school and where her best friend is currently dean, so she packs up her life and heads across the "pond".

She is given an incredibly warm welcome from most everyone, except one particularly prickly professor who felt the job should have been hers. When Dr. Alice Rice ends up dead on the floor of Gwen's apartment, Gwen's journalistic instincts kick in and she is determined to find out what happened to Dr. Rice.

The Curious Case of the Poisoned Professor, was an interesting cozy mystery. I loved the small town Wales setting. The story was set during the winter and constant storms gave it an ominous feel. Gwen is a great character, I appreciated that she was a more mature character. Cozy mysteries often have a lot of secondary characters, sometimes they add a lot of depth to a story, but sometimes there can be too many to.keep track of, which can become confusing. I found this story had the right amount of secondary characters. They added a lot to the story as Gwen tries to adapt to life in her new town and in her new role, and a couple of them were integral in moving the plot forward.

The one thing I will say, and this almost never happens, I did figure out who the perpetrator was early on. But, what surprised me was the why of the crime. I never had a clue until the reveal at the end.

I read a lot of cozy mysteries, but I don't always continue reading the series. I am looking forward to the next in the series.

Thanks to NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for the gifted copy of this e-arc.

"The Curious Case of the Poisoned Professor" is the first book in the "Welsh Village Mystery" series by Lucy Connelly.

I was quickly drawn into this story as Dr Gwen Griffith arrives in Dillynaidd, Wales to head up the journalism department at the university where she had gotten her degree over twenty years earlier. After being downsized from her newspaper editor job in the USA, she had accepted the offer from her college friend Carolyn Sparks - now the dean of the university. Gwen likes a challenge and this was a new chapter in her life, but she wasn't expecting it to start with the death of the rather prickly Dr Alice Rice whom she'd just met at a faculty dinner party!

Despite the January weather, the village setting for this book sounds idyllic. The core characters are a nice blend and make her feel welcome. Gwen is used to being on her own, but finds herself easily being drawn into gatherings and making new friends.

With the help of her very bright and helpful TA, Ellis, the pair work to solve the mystery of Dr Rice's death - despite the local detective trying to warn them off. Their journalism instincts are on high so they try to pursue carefully but still manage to get in a bit of trouble with the detective and draw the unwanted attention of the killer. It gets very dangerous for both before the case is solved!

Some well placed misdirection led to a few potential suspects but I had a hunch early on who was behind the murder and why. Even so, the story was well told with subplots of character development and hints of what may be to come in future books of this series.

Overall, this was a thoroughly enjoyable page turner of a cozy mystery and I can't wait to read what Ms. Connelly comes up with for the next book in this series!

Dr. Gwen Griffiths is very relatable. A journalist of twenty years who was unexpectedly downsized, Gwen finds herself starting over as a professor in the quaint village of Dillynaidd, Wales. Still carrying the instincts of an investigative reporter, she quickly discovers that quiet village life isn’t nearly as peaceful as it appears, especially when a professor is poisoned.

Gwen is a character you can’t help but like. After spending twenty years as a journalist, she’s unexpectedly downsized and finds herself starting over as a professor in the small Welsh town of Dillynaidd. It’s a big change from the newsroom to the classroom, but Gwen’s reporter instincts are still very much intact. They will come in handy when a professor is poisoned and things in town start to unravel.

One of the things that makes this story so enjoyable is the relationships. Gwen’s best friend is the dean, which adds both support and a little extra tension when university politics get messy. Her student assistant is sharp and eager, making a great partner in unofficial sleuthing. And then there’s the local police detective. heir interactions have you sensing that their working relationship might slowly turn into something more in future books.

The village of Dillynaidd feels cozy and welcoming, even with a murder in the mix. There’s academic drama, small-town gossip, and plenty of suspects to keep you guessing. The mystery unfolds at a steady pace, with enough twists to stay interesting.

Thanks to NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for the Chance to read this story and give my opinion.

Gwen Griffith, after an early retirement as a newspaper editor, has accepted a new job as a professor in the journalism department at the college where she took her undergraduate degree. Her best friend is the university's dean and put her on to the job. Gwen is eager to get to know the people working for her and gladly accepts her friend's invitation to a gathering to meet them. Dr. Alice Rice is the only one Gwen has trouble with. Alice resents the newcomer Gwen has been given the post she wanted so badly. She makes all sorts of rude remarks at the party.

Later that evening, when Gwen has returned to her new flat, Alice comes to her door, makes a cryptic remark, and falls dead into Gwen's arms. Gwen's curiosity is aroused. She wants to learn more about the woman no one from faculty to students liked. And when the verdict of murder by poison is given, she is even more curious.

Gwen teams up with her new assistant who is also headed for a career as an investigative journalist to learn more about Alice and about who might want her dead. Somehow, Gwen finds herself on the killer's radar. Anonymous notes, a stalker, and a near miss hit-and-run indicate that someone believes Gwen is getting too near to solving the case.

I enjoyed this first in a new series title. I liked the setting and characters. I liked Gwen's young assistant and can see the local detective as a possible love interest for Gwen in future stories.

The Curious Case of the Poisoned Professor is a charming and engaging start to a brand-new cozy mystery series.

Set in the quirky Welsh town of Dillynaidd, this story blends small-town charm, academic intrigue, and classic amateur sleuth energy in a really satisfying way. Gwen Griffith is a likeable and capable protagonist — a journalist turned university department head whose investigative instincts kick in naturally when trouble quite literally lands on her doorstep.

I loved the academic setting and faculty drama woven into the mystery, and Gwen’s journalism background makes her sleuthing feel believable rather than forced. Her friendship with the university dean adds warmth, humour, and a strong support system, which balances the tension of the mystery nicely.

The Welsh setting really elevates this cozy, giving it a fresh feel while still delivering everything you want from the genre — quirky locals, a close-knit community, and a mystery that’s engaging without ever becoming too dark. The pacing is steady, the clues are accessible, and the tone stays comfortably cozy throughout.

This is a strong series debut that sets up both the characters and the setting beautifully, and I’m definitely keen to continue.

This is the first of a new series. Gwen ( a journalist who lost her job) to up a job heading the journalist department
At the same University in a small Welsh town where she went all those years ago. Her friend is now the Dean.
At a dinner party meeting her colleagues one is not so nice ( she wanted her job) she is later that night murdered. At
Gwen’s door so she feels she needs to find out what happened. I like Gwen, she’s believable and a strong character.
Her friend the Dean ( and her husband) are also believable, as is Ellis ( Gwen’s assistant) and the handsome detective.
It was a fast paced book, and I enjoyed it, but a couple of things I found annoying. First, the characters kept saying
My wee home or our wee town, a phrase commonly used in Scotland and Ireland ( the Author has two other
Series set in those Countries) but it’s not a phrase commonly used in Wales. I spent some time there in 2023.
Beautiful Country. Detectives in Wales like the rest of the Uk are usually called DI or DCI depending on their
Rank. And of course- where was the cute cat that is sitting on the cover! No cat in the book. Disappointing. But
It is the first in the series, so hopefully the next one will fix these things up.

Connelly's newest cozy mystery successfully expands her collection to the beautiful mountains of Wales, taking her one step closer to completing the Great British Murder Mystery Tour. In each of her series, set in Scotland, Ireland, and now Wales, the culture and geography become integral elements in the development of both the characters and the plots. Likewise, the FMC is always an amiable, curious, and intelligent American settling in a picturesque spot in the Old World. In Wales, we meet Gwen, a retired journalist hoping that her new university job will offer her new opportunities to build into the next generation of skilled and determined reporters. When a professor in her department dies on her front steps, Gwen can't resist investigating...and getting herself into trouble. If you've read the Scottish and Irish series from Connelly, you know how the plot goes. Thankfully, you'll also find a similar quirky, interesting, and lovable ensemble cast of characters surrounding Gwen. I enjoyed this addition to the author's catalog of work and look forward to seeing more of Gwen and her friends.

I really enjoyed The Curious Case of the Poisoned Professor. It’s the first in Lucy Connolly’s new Welsh Village Mystery series, and it feels like a very solid start.

Dr Gwen Griffith moves to a small Welsh university town for a fresh start, only to have a colleague collapse and die on her doorstep on her very first night. From that moment on, she’s pulled into a mystery she can’t ignore. I loved that Gwen is a former investigative journalist. It makes her curiosity and questioning feel natural rather than forced.

Ellis, her teaching assistant, is a real highlight. Their partnership has warmth and humour, and I can already see him becoming a firm series favourite. The village setting is cosy without losing a sense of tension.

I did guess the culprit slightly before the big reveal, but that didn’t take away from my overall enjoyment. It’s a character-driven cozy with a great foundation for future books. I’ll definitely be continuing the series.

I really enjoyed meeting Gwen and all her supporting characters in this book. I also really appreciate the author making it clear which guy ended up with Gwen too. For a while I kinda suspected a possible triangle but after a point in the book, I had a feeling she wasn’t gonna subject us to a triangle. And the ending proved that right.

I loved how Gwen and her teaching assistant Ellis were researching and ended up sleuthing when one of the professors from Gwen’s new department was killed. After some scary notes and creepy stalkers, Gwen faced off with a killer and got the upper hand just in time. The ending was so cool and now I can’t wait to read the next book. I have some of this author’s other books, but “so many books, so little time” always kicks in and this ARC is actually the first I’ve read from her, and I liked it a lot!

I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book provided by Crooked Lane via NetGalley, and my opinions are my own.

After being forced into early retirement by the newspaper she worked for as a managing editor, Dr. Gwen Griffith takes a position as the head of the journalism department at the Welsh university she attended as an undergraduate. After meeting Dr. Alice Rice at a faculty party, Dr. Rice comes knocking on her door stating she has something to tell Gwen. Unfortunately, before more is said, Dr. Rice collapses. As Gwen tries to help her along with the help of another colleague, it becomes evident that Dr. Rice is dead. When Gwen discovers that the victim was poisoned, she and her teaching assistant investigate Dr. Rice's background to discover who had reason to murder her. As the investigation continues, Gwen receives a threatening note, putting herself and her assistant at risk.
Great start to a new series.

After her previous career ended in an early retirement due to layoffs , Dr. Gwen Griffith has left Texas for Dillynaidd, Wales, and a new life as head of the local journalism department. While most people are welcoming, Dr Alice Rice, who had plans to be the new head, isn’t. Unfortunately after a meet and greet event, Rice is found dead on Gwen's doorstep. Being an investigative journalist for much of her previous career leads Gwen to do some investigating of her own to figure out who killed Alice and why.

This was perfect beach read. It wasn’t overly complicated and featured a cast of likeable characters. I think my biggest disappointment was that there wasn’t more of Wales - especially photos. I’m ready to book a trip.

Recommended. I received a copy of this from NetGalley.com that I voluntarily chose to review.

I have enjoyed every cozy mystery by Lucy Connelly and I have read each and every one of them! I love that with The Curious Case of the Poisoned Professor, we have the beginning of a new series, and it's set in a new place too! Wales is a place I've always wanted to visit so this was a fun little trip there!

When Gwen Griffiths moves from Texas to Wales, she doesn't expect to be embroiled in a murder ...and one that takes place at her very own door! But she's quick to set off on a little adventure to clear her name and find out who did it! Along with Gwen we meet a new cast of characters who live in this charming university town. It looks like we'll have a nice little romance brewing here too!

I read/listened to the audio and Kimberly M. Wetherell did an amazing job (as usual) with this Lucy Connelly book!

Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review. All opinions are my own.

After reading Connelly’s Scottish Shire series I was looking forward to her new book set in Wales. I listened to the audiobook and was unfortunately disappointed in the narrator who was far too chirpy and did an awful rendition of a Welsh accent.

However, the book itself was interesting. A decent plot, good characters and dialogue, lots of red herrings, but ultimately the killer was somewhat easily guessed.

I honestly would’ve given this an additional star if it weren’t for the fact that the author has picked up on one of the worst phrases used in many cozy mysteries (Jenn McKinlay, looking at you): “He/she/I blew out a breath.” Ugh. They are so many more different phrases you could use: I sighed. I shrugged my shoulders. I was concerned/upset/disgusted/whatever. To keep using this trite phrase over and over makes me literally cringe and frankly shows laziness. Please do better.

2.5. I have read a few other books by this author and I enjoyed them. But this one just didn't hit the same. The first issue I had was I just didn't really like the MC. She just felt a little snooty to me and it made it hard to connect with her and like her. The other issue I had was that it felt repetitive. I know she is working at the University's Journalism Department but that word was used a lot in reference to that and her career background. And the uses were repetitive, two different people ask her why she is so into investigating the crime and she references her journalism background for both. Its valid but the same question did not have to be asked twice for us to understand this.

Dr. Gwen Griffith moves from Texas to Dillynaid, Wales, a small university town, to become the new journalism department head. All seems to be fine until a very disliked professor dies at Gwen's door. Gwen and her new assistant delve into the mystery, causing a mysterious stranger t0 follow her and the handsome local constable to worry about her. The author provides beautiful descriptions of the Welsh village and its wonderful people, creating a strong start to a promising new series. Thanks to NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for providing an ARC.

A Welsh Village mystery

First in a new series. American woman takes a job as a professor at a University in Wales. During the course of the book there is a murder of another professor. Several suspects emerge during the investigation by the professor and her teaching assistant. With several attempts to stop her from investigating fails. Until the end I had no idea who the murderer was.

The Curious Case of the Poisoned Professor is a great start to this new series by Lucy Connelly. I enjoyed the cozy Welsh village setting and the character introductions. The mystery was good and kept me interested, though I admit I guessed whodunnit a few chapters early. Really liked the interactions with Gareth and Gwen and can’t wait to see things develop with them in future books.

Thanks to the publisher, via Netgalley, for an advance e-galley for honest review.

This clever series starter is atmospheric and has great elements of journalism and academia. I would really enjoy getting see some of these characters more. The mystery in this one was quite compelling, and I appreciated that within a short book the author kept the pace and tension up quite well.

This cosy mystery grabbed my attention right from the start. It's quick-paced, set in an escapist atmosphere, with a cast of well-developed characters and a pleasant writing style. I found the ending a bit rushed, but overall it was a solid first installment in the series.
Looking forward to the next book!

Gwen moves from Texas to Wales after losing her job to become head of the journalism department at the local college. Everyone greets her the first meeting except the professor who falls dead into Gwen’s rooms. Not very many like this professor but who disliked her enough to commit murder.

I found Lucy Connelly’s mysteries a few years ago and have been hooked ever since! This is the first in a new series, which takes place in Wales and the main character is a professor of journalism at a university. I loved the characters and mysteries, but did find it a little rough in some places as it finds its footing in setting up the series. I’m curious to see how the relationships with the other character’s evolve and look forward to the next in the series!
